- This is my most brutally honest video on A.I. Art, and why the userbase won't last more than a couple years. There are loads of people using A.I. Art for the wrong reasons, thinking they'll get rich fast or take advantage of a trend, but really, they're on a downward spiral to creative oblivion. Learn why this tech and trend won't hold it's userbase for long, and real artists won't ever go away. All of these insights draw upon my decade of freelancing in art and being a professional artist and art mentor.

How has ai been affecting you, and how did this video help you?
AI has influenced me to steer my illustrations towards character design. I originally wanted to do more fine art like illustrations, but I want to play to a strength AI does not have. Also, AI is a factor as to why I am leaving DeviantArt and Twitter. I know that is probably against what you would advise, but I am confident that I don't need any particular platform. I agree the AI hype will end, just like NFTs, when there aren't any buyers.
@LillenArt2 honestly, I’d advise you to make art regardless of the platform you use or if you want to be a hermit for a while 😂 art making was never able social media, was it?
AI Art has caused me to get back into drawing. I’m still trying to decide if that’s a good thing or bad thing because drawing is kind of an addictive hobby 😅
@sodakhan I think that’s a great thing, in fact! Did you see my previous video on how ai could actually serve to benefit artists at the end of it? I recognize that it could, in another setting, serve to show your own potential, so long as it’s a reference for you to authentically chase
My specialty is soft-erotic art and AI reduced my Patreon income by 30% between December last year and last month, but this month it's back up a bit, and hopefully this is a trend.
Also, people say AI could save time doing boring stuff, but if your art process is boring you have either lost touch with your art or are approaching it the wrong way.
So true! It’s not very sustainable or enjoyable to only look forward to the end product, is it?

Art for me, to do my best, is a grueling, tedious process that takes 100% effort and intense concentration. It's hard work. But it pays off in the end when you're amazed with what you created. And people are impressed. If it isn't hard work, you could try harder and do better. 😊maybe some folks paint or draw casually for fun. I draw to put my imagination on paper. I love amazingly realistic fantasy or dark art. To captivate and move people. There's deep emotion in it. And you appreciate something more when you gave it your all. It's tough to do your absolute best. And if I don't try as hard my results are good but not great
i'll never understand how it is saving time when ai needs even more references (and much more accurate ones) than an artist
i tried to draw and simultaneously tried to make reference for that same art, and the result is...i drew faster and there wasn't any normal result from ai at all
art process is the best thing when nothing is going wrong
As someone recently looking to commission a professional artist, I was blown away by people wanting to be paid $40/hr when it was obvious they were just using AI. One artist sent me examples from his portfolio and several of them had missing fingers. In one, a tree branch in the foreground had a finger growing out of it. I even specified that I wanted to pay for non-Ai assisted art so there wouldn't be any questions when it came to copyright.
Edit: I'm more so shocked that they didn't notice or didn't have the skills to photoshop those mistakes and at least pretend they made it themselves.
Glad you caught the mistakes. People like that don't deserve to be paid what they ask.

Next time ask an artist to draw the same hand with different expressions. You can even show the expression you want using simple lines in a sketch and turn these lines into a hand. Try to make lines not to be properly connected so AI cannot see closed shapes, or a shape at all. AI "artist" will ahev a hard time turning a sketch full of lose lines into a realistic hand, if he asks AI to generate a hand with this. Also ask the artist to draw hands that interact with different objects. You can also ask to rotate a drawing so the hand is seen in 2 drawings from different angles. Ask the artist to draw tree roots that look like the hand of a skinny elder.
In summary, find ways to make the task of drawing hands with AI a nightmare. A talented artist would be able to draw hands without problems, and if the artist is not so good, hands just will lack dramatic expression and wil look rigid, but will have the proper shape of a hand.
Hands have lots of rules to be followed, and they have zero margin of error in these rules.

I used to be an AI "artist". I quit about 2 weeks after stable diffusion came out because it became too boring. That's when I realized that AI art is made to replace artists and my contribution is, essentially, not needed to the AI anymore. It was like a small, cute child that grew into a monster.
So what’s it been like since moving on past ai? Are you back to making your own authentic artwork?

Yes! AI Art was so fun before Stable Diffusion/MJ/DallE came to corrupt it and brought in all sort of bullying, greedy incels 😞 But it also made me appreciate my drawings and paintings more!

I feel AI images have already began to fall off and being abandoned in social media and among the general public. Many communities more or less discourages the sharing of AI "art", which I predicted as more people become aware of the scummy nature behind AI. Let's just hope businesses and corporations will soon follow suit.
Have you noticed how even general audiences, as in non-artists, have shown distain for ai images and videos? That will certainly become a stigma for businesses, won’t it? Bad PR
@@TheArtMentor Yeah I'm glad people are proving to have more taste for human made and non-exploitive works. I'm just concerned businesses might prioritize profits over morals, and no doubt those are the kind of people still advocating for AI "art". But at least we will know which companies to avoid.
We were promised autonomous AI cars years ago that will replace humans. I am still waiting.
AI already produce everything it could produce :) same is you gave human artist a superpower to finish image in few seconds he will run out of ideas of what to make eventually

im an artist who was depressed by AI. Then adopted it to enhance my art. Then, after a month I stopped caring about AI and realized I loved the full creative process and went back to just doing everything myself. My AI journey lasted about 1.5 months and never went back. Even with all the advancements, AI art is so obvious and lifeless.. I feel at this point it has boosted the value of real art

I'm trying out generating AI art with mixed feelings. It's nice to see some ideas and use it as a template. But it does not give me any skills, besides some Procreate practice. And it does not feel the same as creating something myself.
The fun in creating is the flow and zen of being focused single mindedly.
I am an artist, have my own yt channel and I was depressed for months especially when I was accused of using AI, despite showing the accuser my procreate process video and they would not apologize. I went to AI played with it hated most of what generated, but was inspired by some. So I sometimes use it as a brainstorming tool, never the final result. It's evolving more and more. It's shortsighted to think it will go away. It's wormed it's way into coloring ooks and is totally pretty but horribly boring. To me, AI art is a stock image. It's not good until you add your heart into it.
Same but my AI journey lasted for 1 prompt. I wanted to see what “dinosaurs in space” would come up with because that was my partner’s birthday party theme. I was just too lazy to try and draw it myself (though I know I could have with enough time) but I was just curious mostly because everyone was saying how great AI was, so I just wanted that quick hit of dopamine to see what it might look like without actually having to do it myself. It is basically glorified Google. Overall I concluded the entire process was not very fulfilling, so I never had the desire to do it again. That was the only time I ever used AI art and I don’t miss it. If there is anything actually worth creating, I want full creative control over that project. Call me a control freak but I want to be able to take pride in the work I do. Knowing I created something completely from scratch starting with a blank canvas is partly why I love making art. I love the feeling of being proud of myself for completing a piece. I just don’t get that kind of satisfaction with AI art.
Today i had a couple of police officers at my studio / boarding house (evicting a bad tenant). They were transfixed by a huge, centre-piece painting of mine. As one photographed it, saying "My wife wont believe that talent like this still exists, unless i show her"; the other one revealed that they are very much aware of the A.I. assault on all of the creative spheres. Real people are on our side, and i believe that now is the time to try and make your own gallery space (even if its just a room). People want human made great art to be safeguarded in a physical space-- now, more than ever.
That’s because people enjoy that human connection. How important is that from the perspective as a viewer and creator?
The fact that traditional handmade crafts is still in production and is in high demand proves that people appreciate skill and hardwork rather than soulless factory made products.
@@Paopao621 This is so true. I've bought a lot of artisan created items over the years and prefer them over the factory made ones. There's more creative design and "soul" to them.
Now, more than ever? Is that why my art sales have dropped to zero? Everyone says "ooooh I want that" but nobody pays.
What have you been doing differently though? If you aren’t getting clients, what can you do to better attract them? I’ve made quite a few videos on that topic if you’d like some actionable suggestions 👍
Hollywood execs are talking about having AI write scripts, and then just bringing in screenwriters to “polish” them cheaply. They don’t seem to be asking themselves why any talented writer would bother going into a field that’s neither financially nor creatively rewarding. Same with artists. The people with the ability to communicate using images have better things to do than fix bad AI imagery for a pittance.
Absolutely! It’s a cheap substitution for creativity, isn’t it?
This could be a catalyst for indie groups to gain actual footholds in terms of having talent that flees from those companies come to them, helps them rise if that makes any sense. Maybe I am optimistic, but I'd rather be than not.

Well, having seen a lot of Hollywood stories on streaming services, originality isn't exactly what most of these stories are known for.
It is true that a lot of the people that are using AI art were never going to commission artists in the first place. I don't consider these cases as 'lost jobs'. One thing that helped me was actually interacting with AI images and things like ChatGPT. These things may look impressive from afar but once you take a good look the cracks show like giant red flags. There are people who have tried to use AI to replace human writers, and it comes out sounding disturbingly inhuman.
And art isn’t any different, is it? How can you possibly forge a human connection with an artificial image that doesn’t understand how we feel or think?
I actually tried to get it to make a workable illustration bed on a client brief I had worked on. I had already finished and got paid for it and used the brief as a test that would tell me if it is actually even good. It didn't produce anything i wouldnt have to do heavy editing on. In fact it was mostly not usable at all. Not even as a reference. I am better off chopping and editing actual reference image and making some shitty art out of that at thst point. It was frustrating even when my payment didnt depend on it.
I realised AI art looks good if you are very vague but cant actually be used much commercially because the more specific i got about what my clients had asked for the worse the illustration was since it didnt meet the needs of actual projects.
Well AI writing is actually pretty good. the only problems is that it can only make very short stories
and considering taking good look nobody cares to give that good look to your work anyway average internet used will spend no more than few seconds on your masterpiece until they click next.
@@TheArtMentor Funny enough you can forge that connection with AI because lots of guys fall in love with AI girlfriends.
5:40 I can personally attest to this. Not with AI exactly, but a similar experience. I learned Photoshop and image manipulation before I learned to draw, so I used to Frankenstein together pieces of pictures I liked to make new things. This had limits, and keeping track of the usage rights for every image component was a pain. So, I switched to learning to draw.
But I still used Photoshop heavily as a crutch. It's fine if the drawing is proportioned badly, I thought; I can just warp or shrink certain parts. Never mind that this totally ruined the lines - I'll just trace it again! Who cares if I can't draw backgrounds? I'll just use Photoshop filters to render weirdly realistic trees that don't match the art style at all!
Unsurprisingly, I hit a wall pretty quickly and realised I needed to just learn to do it properly. I was limiting myself by relying on digital tools so hard, to the detriment of actually learning to draw. That's not to say digital art is bad, that's my medium of choice. But no program in the world is going to give you the flexibility just learning to draw would

I want to personally thank you for making this video. This whole issue of "A.I." has brought me nothing but existential dread and crippling anxiety. I have friends and family who are artists themselves, and it pains me to see so many people falling for this obvious scam. I can't, for the life of me, comprehend why there's this vitriolic hate for artists who have legitimate concerns with this technology. It's at least reassuring the know that more and more people are seeing through the manipulative tactics these tech companies are spewing. And I think this'll only increase as time goes on.
Even if A.I. "art" becomes "the new thing", I will always support actual artists' work because passion and skill matter more than "simple pretty images". Because having standards is more important than just the end result.

Style and customer relations are so important. I have repeat customers because they like my art, my style and my quirkiness. I've had people ask if my art was glow-in-the-dark because my use of color and lighting is able to trick the eye that well.
A problem I noticed with the text-to-image generators is the "better" they get, the more mass produced the images look. It reminds me of the difference between a plastic broom bought at the store versus a broom made by a craftsman. They both function as brooms, but there is an obvious difference in quality. (I'm still angry at myself for not buying that beautiful handmade broom. >_< )
I am also an artist that gets commissions from time to time. The quirks that people enjoy from my stuff tends to be related to my art style. It's an oddball marriage of art styles from both western cartoons and anime. Some also enjoy how soft and easy to the eyes the coloring is.
My gripe with text-to-image generators tends to be the weird hands and the feet and its tendency to merge body parts. My inner Biologist is screaming in rage whenever I see those AI stuff. xD

That’s all related to ai algorithms being based on popularity rather than accuracy, isn’t it? It’s guessing based on what the most people like
You can mess with neural nets and/or tags to make images a lot less mass produced looking.
Plus you could technically even train a LoRA or Hypernet on your style
Well, I was wrong. I knew that enthusiasm for "AI" would have faded but not so abruptly and deeply. I'm still scared for big corporations trying to make it the norm, but creators from every field are responding to aggressively that there won't be any enlighted billionaire with enough charisma to make us believe that he's single-handedly moving us in a new era of creativity. "AI" is not making any more step forward, maybe some backwards since it's starting to eat its own shit, the results are repetitious and you can't edit them since it's a black box process. Most of all, the server cost is driving OpenAI and Co. in bankrupticity, and I can't wait for AI bros suddenly having to pay hundred of dollar of subscription or buy superexpensive hardware to make the shit run locally.

How hilarious will it be when those ai companies shut down from a lack of investors and funds? Also, we’ve always seen businesses try to hop in trends before, so wasn’t it inevitable that they’d try it with ai before seeing no results and moving on?
AI bros suddenly creating their own version of Adobe while paying Adobe prices would be the most ironic thing to happen in this situation.

As far as im concerned AI isnt the issue but just a symptom of a deeper issue anyway. Its scary and potentially dangerous sure, but in the end its just a natural conclusion of the industrialization of art that has been happening for years now. In the industry artists already are underpaid, overworked and treated as expendable (not always ofc but these issues are real and relevant). Artists are already treated as just the middleman and its not surprising that if those corpos get the chance to cut that middleman out, they will. AI only amplified this view on artists. If anything this whole affair shouldve been a wakeup call not against ai but for better treatment and work conditions in general
In mexico we have a lot of youtubers who make society phenomena critics, and this one is a topic a lot of them spoke about. One of them with a video title “Are AI going to replace us?” And even tho he said in some repercussions this tech will affect, he said then “AI is not replacing no one in reality, is people who replace themselves by not feeling they have the capability to produce something with more quality than AI”
That’s an interesting insight I agree with. It’ll eventually cannibalize and destroy itself over time, rather than surpass human abilities, won’t it?

@@TheArtMentorIt may depend if some people would like to use an AI but as a part of their work, and not as a way to make a quick way to have results, and that’s where I think your first points make total sense :) Art would never disappear and just evolve and adapt to not let itself get down, not by this people who weren’t brave enough to grow their creativity.
I think it is also something we should consider doing, that is growing as a brand that solves desires and necessities and not just someone who draws by instructions.
I almost forgot about it, but before AI was actively promoted, all major media and courses for "creative" promoted VR as a new direction of the future and that everyone should run there. And now when they ask about the industry of the future in the art community, everyone shouts about AI. It's funny, like a popular toy on the eve of Christmas on every corner, but after it becomes not interesting

I just recently quit ai art initially use it for curiosity I realized the dark reality it's hurts my self esteem so badly to the point it makes me to grateful for my own art so thank you making me realize to be grateful with my art. 5:48

Today, drawing on paper is a certification of authenticity of arts.
I quitted ai “art” and looking at it because it made me think that it looks extremely awful. Every time, I try to look at it, it mades me cringe. It also looks boring and souless pretty much. I would rather look at human art rather than ai “art” since looks so disgusting to me.

So lets say that AI art did take over, maybe even in the new future. I still wouldn't quit being an artist, and I still wouldn't use AI to make art. I love this craft, I've put years of my life into improving my craft, I don't really give a shit if some samey big wig company uses some algorithm to make their samey logo for their company that we never really needed in the first place. Go ahead. I never wanted to work for you to begin with. I'm just gonna draw the cool stuff that comes to my mind and enjoy my life.

@@TheArtMentor ive been a bit disappointed in seeing how some of the trolls keep telling everyone to give up, i fear maybe some people took their advice and stopped creating. But I didnt start making art for a logical reason, and i doubt every other artist did either, its just something i enjoy. So why would i quit for a logical reason, when i didnt start for a logical reason? That pretty much invalidates all the trolls messages of giving up, since they look at it from a very computational standpoint

yeaaaa, isee a lot of people ask us to give up, i dont think thyere artist, and understand how fun and joy to work on real arts, only asumtions that create by random people 😂
EDIT: I feel like I should state that my points listed below are more from hearsay than actual indepth research with the topics. Some of them already resolved themself, like Riot taking down the video apparently and WotC denouncing AI art in their books. Wich is a W for artists!
I do want to agree with this Video 100% but at the moment I feel like theres still some waiting to be done. Corporations that were well known for hiring artists are gonna take the cheapest AI way. The new fallout poster for the series was made by AI already. Yeah it looks bad but at first glance noone will notice. No non artist atleast. And this worries me the most, that no one other than us artists will actually care about quality artworks.
I do agree that most casual users are gonna stop using it soon. Its a trend that will fade and it wont make me stop doing art.
Just a few more examples how AI is already being snuck in newer products.
-Riots new Videos transforms the audience into "artworks" using AI
- Music Videos of bands are being made with AI
-The new DnD book Glory of the Giants features AI Artworks
- You need to opt out if you dont want Meta to use your content for AI training on their plattforms
It might be all over soon and im sure human art will have its place in the future but I cant help to feel disrespected in my passion.
Don’t worry too much about corporate ai use. The lack of copyright means only the companies that are already at death’s door are trying it out and no amount of replacing competent people will solve the problems of incompetent leadership within these companies. Disney is already tanking hard because they are having brain dead executives chop up multiple scripts from multiple writers and piecemeal them all back together like a Frankenstein’s script. Functionality it’s the same as ai already and people notice the quality and uncanny valley effect so when they find something off even if they can’t identify it they will research it because consumers don’t want to pay for something they could make themselves for free. This will only bankrupt these companies and any country which legalizes ai in any capacity will experience economic collapse within months of regulation being passed. The ai future is going to a restaurant, waiting 4 hours, and paying $45 for a slice of burnt toast instead of using a toaster at home. Let ai babies chuck spears at tanks and call it the future. It will be funny when their aversion to work is why they can’t win a war of effort.
man.. when corporations start using a tool that every consumer can have for free... they won't be able to build an authenthic brand...
if they want to shine between all the competence, they need to feel different...
so using AI is a deadend for every art corporation...
maybe not now.. but when AI looses it's magic
Just as a caveat to your examples:
1) dnd doesn’t use ai in anything, and they publicly denounced it and admonished the artist who did use ai
2) the Riot video wasn’t actually made by riot
It’s already happening, which is why it was inevitable to see corps attempt ai. Why wouldn’t they attempt to use the trend to try to save a buck? But what about the blowback and lackluster results? They’ll be begging for artists back shortly for those who attempted the shortcuts, see that?
Youre right. The results are not good. I feel like my biggest "fear" in all of this is that just not enough people will care about the quality. I know that us artists will and that there will always be a place for us. I just hope that the mainstream will notice and call out these blatant errors aswell.
Someone said that there is a saying that roughly translates "if its good enough for the peasants" wich describes low effort aslong as it gets the job done. Wich is what companies try using Ai.

Im part of an etsy sellers group and there are a lot AI images sellers and when they are asked if ai produced this, they arent eager to disclose because they know its frowned upon. And you can only take a business so far if you feel shame about it
That’s so true! I hope more people read this and understand that. You can’t go far with so much social disdain for your product and pretending to be something you aren’t, can you?
my mom is trying to do stuff like this 😭 she keeps trying to sell ai art prints and gets annoyed how she's getting no orders. i keep saying that no one likes ai art and it's taking away from other artists and she's saying she's only in it for quick money. it's annoying because i've been drawing for 8 years and i would love to just draw her prints for her but she still keeps doing ai instead

There just isn't any value in something that's so easy to churn out. Even AI can't change the basic laws of supply and demand. Too much supply, and no one gives a crap about AI art sludge anymore.
Furthermore, even if AI art gets really big, people with art skills are infinitely more likely to be the ones behind the wheel. There's no reason to have some guy who doesn't have a good eye and has no art skills typing in prompts when an artist could also do it and even make hand revisions.
Exactly! That’s just like the scenarios I outlined in this video, isn’t it? How could anyone without hard skills possibly survive with or without ai?

We need more people like you to understand that art isn't a piece of picture. It is the very being of an individual person putting time and effort into constructing something.
8:40 This might be my favorite section of the video. As an longterm artist I'm not much concerned about "AI artist" posers going through their 15 minutes, but definitely a lot more about important clients and companies pretending to skimp on investing in real artists to save a buck. Serious established clients may think twice about it but not all of us work for Fortune 500 companies, but rather to mom and pop shop types. So the end question is if they will care enough - maybe only after their own numbers start tanking, sadly. 🤔

The problem is not the ai artist that posts 10 pics per day and get bored, but those who will want commissions and they will rather get it for free; corporations will surely use ai because it’s way cheaper, provided that no backlash will backfire

Anyone thinking about quitting art because of ai please remember this, the only way ai can win is if we give up. As long as artists fight the war continues and becomes effort from both sides to determine the fate of the world. Ai proponents are in favor of this tech because they can’t be bothered to put effort into anything while artists are no strangers to hard work.

Thank you for your insight, I agree with all. I want to be as optimistic in the "taking the bad clients" field, but the thing is that it floods every other market where artists are drowned in AI generated crap (etsy, amazon, kickstarter for example). Yes, probably a fad, but a terrible one.

@@TheArtMentor I am very hesitant to say marketplaces will take a stand, until there's a legal case where they are liable. They'll just keep getting the money and blame the Ai user for any transgression to the costumer, not even taking on account the market impact as long as the revenue keeps coming in. Common Folk that buy things on these sites really don't care much aither, they get fooled easily, which is the real downer in this situation
I agree there needs to be more protections and guidelines in place to protect consumers and clients alike. How long until ai users start ripping each other’s images and selling them without normal protections tho? That should be entertaining
Messing around with SD was fun, for about a month or two, and lost all it's novelty. My main interest with SD was finding clever ways to mash multiple styles and seeing the result. Few of my favourite artists include H.R Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński - It was fun to see a mix of others, or seeing how multiple styles would output different genres. All of this was for myself, nobody else. After a while it all just became samey, not all that exciting. I may spend an hour, or so, though it's mainly just encouraged me to take up to practice the art for myself. Again, it can be fun, at times, but it won't replace an actual artist with 10+ years of experience. Besides, when the user takes up to correct the myriad of imperfections of generated art? You may as well just do the whole process yourself.
You felt that creative void, huh? Good for you for recognizing that. Even corrections to ai works are pretty extensive and you’ll come to better works yourself if you do it from the beginning, huh?
I find that AI art looks too glossy. Too shiny. Too polished. No heart. No soul. The lines are too clean. It just feels lifeless. Some of it admittedly LOOKS pretty fantastic...but it still FEELS lifeless. Like plain yogurt. Consumable but nothing special or memorable.
All the more reason for human artists to persist, create, and innovate, right? 💪

I am happy to have found your channel today! I read the other week that the images produced by AI image generators are getting worse because they're being trained on their own content now since it's absolutely everywhere. I think that's kind of hilarious and it's a matter of not very much time before AI image generators start producing infinite mirror fractals of AI images on AI images and it starts to look a bit like Google's deep dream. Which were at least interesting to look at.
Also can we talk about how ai imagery hasn’t improved in quality at all in months? I guess the glutton machine is too full huh?
I think the Venn diagram between Ai bros and Crypto bros is a complete circle. They’re exhausting with their smugness. The sad thing is they don’t realise they’re just helping line the pockets of the tech companies who are the ones who will actually profit off of AI.

I think I'll still be using AI the way it is meant to be used in the future, because my favorite artistic tool has and always will be the: Content Aware Fill Tool. This is mostly exclusive to Photoshop but it's been there for so long and has been a God send for touch ups, scales, expansion, and even background design. With AI if you know how to photo bash, you now have an unlimited library of assets.
Why is this important to me? Well I am making webcomics - backgrounds are time consuming and tedious. Most of mine are in 3D and those models don't fit in easily with my (or any of the hundreds of webcomics out there), we only make and use them because we need that consistency in our settings. With AI I can now whip up backgrounds so much faster just by using them as overlays and texture maps on my 3D models, or for quick backdrops during dialogue.
So, AI atleast for me has been quite helpful.
And you’re doing that with an image generator model or just content aware fill?
@@TheArtMentor For most illustrations and artistic projects I'm using the Generative Fill Tool (Adobe Firefly Beta) with no prompt; as an improved version of the old Content Aware tool.
For Webcomic & Asset creation I am using mostly image generator models - Stable Diffusion (since it's free) as well as scalping MidJourney generations for free. (Cut out and turn into photobashable assets) These are mostly for dialogue backgrounds that are blurred or any place I'm in a rush.
For 3D textures & even some lights I am also using image generators, primarily MidJourney due to higher image fidelity. Mostly tiled generations for stylized gradients, dirts, grasses, etc. mix those with the Generative Fill tool and you can make some texture maps that appear hand painted. To give some extra flare you can also hand paint the normals (this has to be done manually), and add a Triplanar noise texture effect to give it an even more unique and stylized feel. In general it's just a time saver.
Most of this is in the experimental stages as none of it has been implemented into a finished public project or on my portfolio. It's ways of me attempting to make 3D feel less janky in webcomics.
Can I caution you that any use of image generator models relies upon the use of stolen work, and that you might want to find other ways to more ethically create your ideas? It can be a slippery slope, you know? 😅 I wonder how you could do what you do without needing those. Without know the specifics I can’t tell, but I’m positive there is a way 👍 I wish you luck on your project
I remember when there was a trend on Instagram to generate realistic faces with a programme for your OC. It was circa 2020/2021 so AI wasn't really big back then. I tried making my own OC's in it ans it was so disappointing. All faces somehow turned put with more or less the same expressions. There was only a handful of facial features and hairstyles that it was capable of creating and it essentially didn't do characters that weren't a "handsome" or "beautiful" young guy or girl. It stopped being a fun experiment to see my OC in a realistic style, and ended up being a struggle to get it to look original. Quite an awful experience.
Yeah just the sameness is boring and gets tiresome, doesn't it? That's what's happening with tastes towards ai generated and tweaked images

Well I will give "AI" one thing: It actually alleviated my impostor syndrome by letting me know that I know who I am and built up from that. While a year ago these tech bros were calling me to commit suicide because I made fun of their own laziness.

AI art reminds me of fast-fashion: a lot of theft, no morals, giving nothing to the world but soulless trash. AI will cheapen art, the way mass production because of automatization increases supply of everything, and therefore, reduces the price. AI bros will leave it eventually bcs a lot of them are just in it to make a lot of money fast by selling "commissions" and courses. art was never something you do to "get rich fast", doesn't matter if you do it by hand or AI.

I've spent about 3-4 workdays in stable diffusion... thinking: "well this is kinda cool" at first... But it didn't take long before I felt like I was just doom scrolling on some social media page... It just left me feeling empty and bored, so I went back to drawing, because I can actually feel my soul being fulfilled. So the one thing I've learned from AI "art" is how much I love the creative process :) Thanks for your videos man, they helped me a bunch back when I was scared of AI
Sometimes an absence makes you realize what’s important and why you make art, doesn’t it? What do you think that’s like when ai tries to imitate a reason for art that was never authentic?
The main things lacking in all AI models is control over the outcome. Its biased towards a set of popular looks, and their avarages, hence all images you make on a model will look very similar. Any attempt at changing/nudging it your way is met with resistance. Remember its configured to output stuff on model and it has to guess for every generation what goes where.
Another interesting note that few people talk about: image generators took out artists’ names, yet they kept the data and that effort didn’t fix anything, since the algorithm already knew which artists to use when generating results. Ever considered that as well? It was a fake platitude
@@TheArtMentor its more like you don't see the names, but everything is categorized in great detail so its picking things from similarly described images and their denoised variations. So if I write a bunch of styles, games, artist names and features it will specifically look for stuff that are described like that no matter if its a cosplay a screenshot from a game, a set of artworks from an artist etc. Refined or unrefined it will always depend on the keywords in the prompt.

I really liked when the kind of results ai generators would get you were more abstract, and kind of looked like what you expected to see, while also not really 'being' anything. I saw lots of artists reinterpret the ai interpretations. It's crazy seeing how fast the switch was flipped from being a creative prompt/redesign kind of tool into an exploitative one.
The goal was always for it to be able to generate realistic images. Most AI art bros were obsessed with trying to make images look more "cleaner" and "realistic" and less abstract back then. The tech was just not good enough nor where their photo editing skills. So there was no switch being flipped. This was always the goal. The tech simply got better extremely quickly.
That’s so true, and the ai bros are to thank for that. Ironic though: eventually the tech will be taken away from them and it’ll be behind massive paywalls. Think Adobe is expensive? 😂
Even now though, there are always hallmarks of ai photos. Ai art is easier to spot thiugh
ok, i want all the artists to understand my perspective point by seizing the occasion. I always wanted the world to be a better place and I tried to fight for that, that everyone had the same opportunities, including artists, I want to motivate children to exploit their imagination and that artists are finally recognized because to begin with, they they have given the most beautiful spark to human history since they have enriched us with their contribution to culture and in general, a feeling and a thought of a human towards another human being for me is the best gift but...
I am terrified so huge because of A.I. why so much effort and in general, my life will be replaced by a machine and everyone will prefer them before human value (what I value most in this world) and it is not a joke when I say that thanks to all this boom, I have been in depression for 1 month and have thoughts of ending my life, every day I want to do it more and I am not even prepared for this, I am only 16 years old and this has been too strong a mental burden for me why not I am prepared and that deep down, I want to continue living but if technology can replace us in everything I prefer to be dead and in fact for the same reason I have no future plans. I tell you as artists to fight until the end and to continue creating art until our end and for what I want the most, please hope and that if the Gods exist, I want you to be the only person with this because I don't want more I went through the pain that I am to vent, nor do I wish it on my worst enemy.

Currently, I think relying on AI art generators to do the work has less to do with efficiency and more to do with a user's inability or insecurity in learning how to draw/color and having the independence to make something yourself with your own two hands. Yeah it takes a lot of time and practice and might seem like a ton of hard, repetitive, unpleasant work to become a pro, but most of that depends on your mindset. With enough practice, things that are tough in the beginning will eventually become less of a barrier you have to contend with because you're also training your brain in how to deal with those obstacles more efficiently. And I know from experience that even as little as a few minutes of practice a day can get you results if you make it a daily habit. It's inevitable that you will improve, but you need a realistic, measurable, and achievable goal in mind and usually some guidance from an experienced teacher.
People often say "just practice," but that's vague and not really helpful. You have to practice with a goal in mind like, "I will gather 30 references and practice breaking them down into basic shapes at least once a day for 5 minutes". You start small and work your way up like you're playing an RPG. If you have the ability to pick up a pencil and draw, letting an AI generator do things for you is cheating yourself in a way. You're depriving yourself of the experience and knowledge you would gain in favor of fleeting instant gratification.
That fear of this barrier to entry makes ai appealing doesn’t it? Yet it’s all a smoke screen when it only further highlights those insecurities and inabilities, doesn’t it?
@@TheArtMentor Yeah and it's also why I reject the notion that AI is "democratizing art". Art has always been accessible to people who are willing to put in the effort, even if they have disabilities. The people who can paint with their mouths and feet are one such example.

I've tried to use AI art for fun, just trying to make some cool looking dwarves (high fantasy, think tolkien) but no matter what i write the dwarves are always brunet with slicked back kinda wild hair, and a metal capped club, even if i wrote "A dwarven warrior with a fiery mohawk wielding a massive warhammer", even on generators that basically write the prompts themselves
That's because of the inherent bias limitations of it, isn't it? You can see that issue with tons of examples, can't you?
This Christmas I will try learn oil painting with my Mother, usually go with acrylic colors and sometimes water colors. I am fascinated by the mixed media art as well, but have not come to that yet.
I do use AI also but most for fun, like playing mobile games sort of. But one thing that has made me not paint so much for real anymore, is that I can not let go of my art (if I do not paint for gifting and have been decided before starting) and I dont have enough walls to hang them on, so most of my paintings are just laying arround getting dusty. And I am not a professional painter, I do this just for fun or relief also, but the value of the real paintings are mostly higher for me than something the AI for fun thing has came up with. At the moment I am in a period of learning to sew as well, to get something of my creativity used for actual useful things that won't be having the problem with not having a proper place to exist in. Like hats and bags. These things are being used by me every day. Any suggestions about how to fix the issues with real canvas paintings? If one wants to create more but don't have space and don't want to give away or sell?

And also the part where really these AI systems and generators are highly digitally based and machine dependent, without course internet accessibility or devices (which are not affordable for alot of people still), they have alot of limitation within agencies. Plus not every art should be digital eventhough we've advanced this far in modern digital age.

I suppose I fall under the "cheap client" side of this. If I had the money to afford buying art from artists I would. But so long as I am having trouble with money, the only way I will see any art created that I might want to have is through AI art. (And if you are wondering, no, I have no intention of trying to sell anything.) An artist would be able to handle everything that I would like to have created much better. But, like so many other things in life, when you don't have money for the real deal, you make due with crappy lesser versions.

i lately noticed, that if i just google images for reference, they look oftentimes closer to my imagination then the images i generate with midjourney. it just cant do very creative ideas oftentimes. if you think about a thing that was never or almost never painted before, you cant get a good image from an image generator. it works better if you just look up som pictures on google and do a rough stitch in ps for a better result. and its also way faster and less frustraiting. but for texture gererating, inpainting, and stylization its very good of course

I still like making AI Art, but I have been a real artist since the age of 5. By junior high, I stopped pursuing it because I wanted to hang on the streets and smoke and drink, but soon I straightened up and got back on track but never officially got back into art. It was 20 years I picked up art again, I took some classes to get the feel of art flowing again, and I did well, but a year later I stopped again, then 3 years later AI became super popular, so started making AI art instead of totally hating it inspired me to get back into being an original artist painting, drawing, and digital art...

i was trying out ai art and after about a week i ended up hating everything I was seeing because 1. it was impossible to get exactly what I wanted, 2. it just didn't look as good as it did in my head, 3. it all looked the same, regurgitated trash
but I still don't know how to enjoy creating, every time I try to create things I just feel horrible, like nothing I make will ever look as good as I imagine, so maybe I'm just not cut out for it

i tried ai art for a bit, and as someone who makes 3d and 2d art from scratch it feels like it never meets my vision and making multiple pieces never matches up. so to me it becomes useless as its so inconsistent and unspecific, or u need to develop a lot of skills making it not more efficient. i do have faith some day we will see personal art assistants trained on our own work, and we can give it sketches and it maybe iterates and does some of the work for us. but the current model is unethical and boring to use

The most I've ever used AI for is generating a quick-and-dirty character headshot for a D&D game. My DM has used it to generate pictures of NPCs that are seen maybe once or twice. Beyond that, I've never really messed with it or found use for it. I find it much more rewarding to commission an artist anyway, if I want something made.

I’ve practiced drawing for a long time. While I taught myself to improve in the art of drawing, the creative process - art itself - taught me something else. When I was a kid, I would look at others’ drawings/paintings and couldn’t understand why I admired it. Even if it wasn’t a theme a or style I didn’t like, there was still something there.
What I realized after spending a good amount of time - day after day for years - trying to improve, was that the drawings/paintings I admired were more than that. Those works represented every moment of the artists’ lives, every moment - traumatic, joyous, melancholic - coalesced into a piece that is essentially a moment frozen in time. It’s not the composition, the line work, or the style; it’s the years worth of determination behind it that made it possible for them to create it. This is something that AI art will have a difficult time emulating.
Even more so, the term “starving artist” exists for a reason. Artists have the ability to create masterpieces with next to nothing because they’ve often been the ones that were living with next to nothing.
You can take away all weapons from man, but they will still have their fists. Should the world collapse entirely, an artist will still use the ashes.
great sentiments! It's great to see your perspectives, and ai users can never think past a superficial line of conceptual understanding. Ideas aren't that valuable
AI is a good entry method for beginner artists to get a feel for the "creation" aspect. Like a coloring book. But in the end if they want to make their own vision into artwork they will see it either requires heavy AI art post-editing or learning some kind of personal skill like drawing, sculpting and so on.
However, using ai as a beginner shortcuts essential understandings and sets up new artists for imposter syndrome. Can you see that though?

I've been drawing digitally since 2007 and for a long period it was my Nr1 medium, but I really lost interest in posting online or even using stuff like instagram. I felt like it didn't end up in genuine interactions with others.
geeking out with other artists about art in general and the stuff I liked was the main reason for posting and once I noticed how bland everything was I didn't feel like participating anymore.
traditional art gives me a result I can touch and that feels real and genuine. right now, that's feels much better than using photoshop without being able to trust them that they don't use the stuff in the cloud for AI.
I don't say my stuff is 100% unique, since we're all epigones to the artists that came before us, but I still think I have my own perspective on things.
the thing with AI art is that it takes away creative decisions from you.
Sometimes Ido like using paint that gives random textures, so in that cases I do rely on something out of my control to influences the end result of the piece...but even then I chose that specific paint to get this effect.
AI makes those decisions for you. You can specify a lot with prompts, but it's never gonna be to the amount of minute details that an artist makes decisions while panting.
since art is largely relying on the subjectivity and personally expression/perception of the artist (yes, even if it's a commission and not personal work), a tool that takes that part out of the control of the artist, is counterproductive.
Even if we're taking the ethical issues with it out of the equation, it's just not useful for artists.

I would say i’m a mix of the first two and agree most of us are stepping away from AI Art/Syntography due to exploitation issues. But what about when a more ethical system comes out? Something like Adobe Firefly but opt in rather than opt out? I’m wondering how many of us will go back to it or if by then we will move onto something else? Im
noticing for myself i’m slowly moving onto new disability friendly hobbies and find it more fulfilling than AI Art. (Also you forgot to mention creepy incel dudes. There are unfortunately a lot of them in the AI Art community 😂)
In all honestly, an exclusively opt-in system would bare two results: more acceptance and lower quality productions, wouldn’t it? Yet that would be fine. However though even Adobe is scummy with their AI. Anyone else here have to manually opt out of Adobe ai training a few months ago? ✋

@@TheArtMentor Oh, well once SD came out the AI Art community dramatically changed and it started to attract more and more incel dudes who just wanted to make waifus and creepy deep fakes. As a site moderator for a large AI Art platform i was constantly having to ban them from our community. We had really strict rules so they kinda went elsewhere but i would say about 50% of the overall AI Art community has been taken over my pervy incels 😬

As an artist I’ve seen both the “adapt or die” sentiment or some handwavey dismissal or even some pointless debates on what is “true art”. This video actually tackled this topic from a more practical standpoint that I particularly liked. The part about bad clients especially stood out to me.

That level of control is what invalidates it as an art form, have you heard that before?
When you try to insert a key into a lock, brain neurons randomize reaction so you will spend some instances trying to correct the random position of the key. This means that the chemistry of neurons never deliver the same output.
AI does the opposite, it does not randomize, but it calculates averages. It means that for a given input parameter in the neuron network, AI will always deliver the same output. Randomization of AI art is not in the output, but the input. It means that AI will deliver an average style.

The problem is not the ai artist that posts 10 pics per day and get bored, but those who will want commissions and they will rather get it for free; corporations will surely use ai because it’s way cheaper, provided that no backlash will backfire

Another great video. In some ways, artists are lucky, because you can identify AI art pretty easily by sight or by using hive. For writers it won’t be so easy.
You would be surprised. Microsoft has been caught *allegedly* publishing AI articles. It started recommending a food bank as a tourist attraction. When people called them out on it, they claimed it was a human error. People do not seem to believe them.

@@TheArtMentor it’s a chrome extension. Hive ai detector. It gives a probability percent and tells which ai was used. It seems pretty reliable. It does detect text as well but I’m not sure how accurate that is.
AI writes like shit. Have some faith. Spiritually, there's a distinct lack of real energy behind AI "works" and people subconsciously pick up on it and hate it.
@@reginaldforthright805I still advise you tread it with caution. It’s not always accurate. I’ve had non AI image labeled as AI, and AI labeled as non AI. If you can’t 100% tell by just looking at the image, always do background research into their profile, such as checking their previous works, how long they been drawing, how often they upload, ask for Timelapse, etc.
Use some ai art generators for inspiration my issue is that often time the art generated is not what I wanted I it would take a lot more time to get a somewhat accurate drawing from it.
Thus making it rather useless, right? Might as well just start from scratch 😅
I'm just a hobbyist digital artist. But I enjoy the process of learning (even if it's frustrating as all hell) and seeing my work improve. Someone once said (about AI books) "Why would I bother reading something no one bothered to write?" The same goes for art. Why would I bother to watch/look at/appreciate something no one bothered to make? Writing a prompt isn't making art. It's visualized word vomit.

Before AI art was publicly available it must have been used by some of the wealthier studios or artists willing to pay for it as an exclusive service. I wonder if anyone out there was using it and selling us AI computer generated art that way.

I've been big on tech my whole life so I'm often very excited by emerging new tech and uses for it, I've been heavily invested into LLM's and the whole AI craze in general. I see alot of amazing uses for it, however for as much as I love the progression of tech as a response to AI art I've begun learning to draw with ink using resources like drawabox to grasp the fundamentals. Let me be very clear; for you to create an image you have in your head with AI art it would take you a ridiculous amount more time than it would take someone who could draw even at an basic level. Using AI to make art is like trying to tell a disobedient kid what you want done and correcting them over and over every time they make a mistake.
It's always so refreshing to hear perspectives from people like you, you know that? There seems to be a large amount of people in your field that share your perspective versus the ones that expect AI to do more it'll ever really be able to. Do you think that's because you're moreso disenchanted with it because you understand AI's inner workings?
@@TheArtMentor I think that's a big part of it, I'm no expert and there are people who understand it far better than I. However from what I have learned I've realized "AI" is less intelligent than it is algorithmic, it gives the impression of intelligence but its not actually thinking or computing which is why it can't really create something original. It has to assimilate a response based on the dataset it's been trained on.
It’s the law of supply and demand. The supply of AI art infinitely outweighs the demand for it. In fact I would argue there is no demand for it because anyone can type a prompt and get their image in seconds. Things often generate value because of usefulness or scarcity. AI art has neither.

As an artist, take a second to appreciate my profile picture. He's my main character. The point? He got features an AI can't tell out, or even the vast majority of real people. Through image to image, the AI can't generate pictures that can be recognized as him, but rather a generic copycat. Yes, it may be "evolving fast", but good luck training the AI to interpret unconventional ways of doing a face, or even repeating that same character it generated before.
And ai users assume that the tech understands images, but really, it doesn't, does it? Your knowledge can't be replicated that easily
@@TheArtMentor This. AIs may have their own dataset, but they can't really create their own new knowledge without human imput to temporally incentivize it to lean to other parts of it's dataset. Meanwhile, all you have to do with a human artist is give them the references for what you want and they'll try to represent these their way.
Basically, when artists meant that AI was doing it wrong with all the image creation tech instead of being to create tools to aid creation, they were right.

It's been on the decline for a while not and continues. Imagine how trying to surpass real skills with a hack doesn't fan out long-term. Crazy, isn't it? lol

I used AI for about a month as an artist to see if i can better my process. Turns out it was fasfer to jusr draw how i normally do. So ai didnt soeed uo my process cos the time it takes to generate and sit and wait until you get the right pose idea.
I’ve found the same thing! Fixing and readjusting is cumbersome isn’t it? Having total control from the start is more satisfying
@@TheArtMentor OMG yes! one time I was stuck just refining prompts and getting the right models and posing to only have to paint over it (I do paintovers), that would take over 10 hours. OR I can take 5-6 hours for a regular piece from 0-100% manual art lol
in essence AI doesnt have that spiritual fulfilment that drawing from my own AI (aka my BRAIN) :-D
There are going to be two types of art created by AI, art that people value and art that they dont. Value art will be more rare and handmade in the physical sense and not done on a computer which is already the case but will accelerate with AI so start creating real physical art
people don't value anything ai makes though, which there's a lot of proof in judging by the landscape of it. Just look on any website and it's below cheap
AI is a marketing term for "smart google search result". It's training.. depends on the internet database. It steals everything, scrambles everything and gives a Frankenstein result without giving credit to it's sources. And that's it. Not intelligent.. not artificial.

I’ve been a subscriber for some time, but never got to commenting until today. We recently had someone donate a book to a library that had AI generated art, and it made me so angry. But at the same time, I know that true artists will never go away, so I will keep strong to work on publishing my own book with my own illustrations someday. I think what helps me personally is seeing how supportive and close knit everyone in the art community has been in terms of working through this chapter, whether it’s from here on UA-cam or on Instagram. And on top of that, it’s people outside of the art community - whether or not they have used an AI generator in the past - recognizing that it’s not just the final product of art we cherish - it’s the process put into making it that really stands out.

The problem with AI *_imagery_* is that it's doomed to lack in the "intelligence" part, and it's only as good as the effort (your hard work on tweaking the prompts + someone else's stolen hard work of making the art) you put into it. Occasionally there are some leaps and advancements that seem promising at first (like NAI V3), but this fundamental fact won't change until they come up with Skynet.

Not gonna lie.. I'm very glad ai art is dying. As an artist I was already against the exploitative nature of it, but I was at least impressed by the technological advancement and scared of being replaced. But It's become so boring and overused that the spark/newness of it is fading away. Now more than ever, seeing the human touch in a piece of art, and understanding the process the artist went through to reach that result, is part of what makes art worth looking at. Even if the artist isn't super experienced, knowing that a human made it means so much to me.

AI can't access memories or emotions. All it can do is average pairs of data patterns it has seen and mix up style and content into new combinations. I think it's a fun tool for exploration but for production it's pretty much useless.
