00:00 Regrets all artists have
I’m a 33 year old artist, and I just received a cancer diagnosis. I actually wish I had spent more time with the people I love the past few years and less time focusing on my art
This was an amazing process to watch. My regret is not just going for it. Like, I know what I need to do and to an extent how to do it, but just starting has been my biggest problem, and like you mentioned, listening to other people. I've been in an environment where there's no peace.
I've let myself be put in a position where I have nothing at this point and just want to live and create art.
For me that looks like painting and illustration and creating my own characters and showing them to the world. I have this whole ideal in my head of how things can be, but the starting and getting out of this space has been the hardest part. I've been at it online off and on since 2001 and I'm still too scared to price my work effectively. But I can't work, so I have to. And at this point, I have more art supplies than food or clothing. If I really charged what I was worth, I could probably buy a lot of what I need to keep going. But I am seriously battling fear and imposter syndrome. I can't' remember if it was this video or your too tired for art video, but you were right about thinking being a cause of not accomplishing anything.
My regret is wasting my creative life, skills, and potential and letting that continue on to be my future.
Wow I'm so sorry for your circumstances, but can I tell you that I sincerely believe you can work yourself into a brighter future like you desire? You have a lot working against you, which also means you have a ton of reasons to succeed and make yourself proud. I believe in you!
When you made the line art of this character, I didn't see the steam punk flawor coming. It's great!
Thanks for picking up on that! It was originally more dark fantasy, but then I switched it to steampunk bc I don't do that much and it was a fun challenge
"Looking back, my life has been nothing but failure"
Is that how you feel?
@@TheArtMentor I'm half joking. Some people will get this. And as for the other half, let's just say Im working on it, starting from re-learning self compassion
I totally get you, and I hope you appreciate your efforts, because just making it this far as an artist is an amazing feat for you, my friend
I approach my art like I don’t have many years left. As for the art itself, yes. I want people to experience it. But even more, I need my art to exist. It can’t stay in my head, even if no one sees it. My regret would be my art never seeing the light of day.
That's actually a fantastic mindset! Otherwise, we can waste away without ever pursuing our passions, right?
Well, I guess I'm getting older, so I can see the finish line a bit sooner than others haha XD
My biggest regret is spending so much time chasing payments to cover family expenses. I wish I'd been bolder and taken more risks to develop a strong IP of my own. Man, have you seen the struggles that guys like Kirkman and McFarlane went through to create their own projects at the beginning? I know I'm in a tougher situation than them, but I also know I haven't been as bold with taking risks. Having sick family members makes it scary to risk things because it's not just me I'm putting on the line.
wow it sounds like you're a pretty tough person though to handle all of that responsibility. Are you giving yourself enough credit for that too? Also, have you considered how much better you could take care of your family if you took a chance on yourself and achieved that level of success?
Im stalling myself in trying to make a living with my art even though i had recently psyched myself up to do so. Keep being afraid of not being good enough to satisfy clients and also being scared to deal with taxes. Haha.
Can I offer you some advice though? I feel you a lot here. However, how about getting to the point where you actually make enough from your freelance work that you really need to pay taxes? it takes time before that happens 🙃 How does that sound? One less barrier for entry!
Thank you for giving me the motivation I need to keep up my art journey. Last time I said that I started art out of frustration regarding the limits of AI art. Well Ive been following Uncomfortable (drawabox owner) and he said something that really touched me
"The need to become a celebrity makes us forget the dreams we had of telling a story". Thank you for reminding me this. I have to focus on making art as a form of self expression, not to make people like me.
I'm so happy to hear this positively impacted you, and I concur with those thoughts. It's more important than be yourself and give that to the world than being what the world wants you to be, isn't it?
being famous is being a patreon artist lol!
oh really? Is that my ticket to success? haha
Love the piece you’re working on, and 100% feel this. I’m a learner artist and more of a natural writer, but for both it applies the same. I never felt more productive and satisfied than when I write my short stories. At one point I felt guilty for not spending time watching shows instead, or playing games. But at the end of the day I was watching someone else’s work.
Creating art of your own I believe is a joy few people truly appreciate, it is about spiritual fulfilment and giving something back to the world. As you say idolatries, just consuming, it is why I think many people who have a creative talent whether it be for drawing, writing, music or something else, feel unfulfilled. It’s true you need to experience other works, take joy in hobbies, that’s where creativity and inspiration can come from. But in our consumer culture it’s so easy to just get addicted to passive hobbies and ending up wasting time
Well said! That mindset of being a consumer versus a creator is so attractive and prevalent, but toxic, isn't it?
@@TheArtMentorabsolutely!
My specialisation is having no specialisation 😂 love the piece in the video btw, looks amazing
Thanks for your kind words!
Well said my friend
Thank you my friend! Have you considered any of these before as well?
Hey thanks for watching! Did you enjoy?

I'm the first like! 🎉
You win! 🏆 what did you think of this?
@@TheArtMentor Great video, I really do feel like a panda some days. lol Hopefully unlike the panda, one day more artists will chose to socialize more with our own kind.
Haha I think many reading this will relate! So what steps are you taking to conquer your panda problem?

I am a man. I threw away my art tools and bought an axe and a chainsaw. I am walking towards the Amazon rainforest. Time to become a lumberjack.
