Reload - A Metallica Retrospective

- Reload was released 1 year after Metallica's Load. How does it stack up? Is it good? Is it bad? Is it Load II: Locked and Reloaded? I have no idea.
Metallica's 6th studio album, Load, is a far cry from what they've done previously. Was it good? Was it bad? I don't know. All I know is that someone is going to be mad at me no matter what I say

no matter what i say, people will be upset
dont do retrospective if you know only 3 or 4 metallica albums. not upset, just surprised.
i think reload is better then load. where the wild things are is underated by band and fans. its a great song
Who cares who you upset your killing it and being totally honest do Megadeth please in fact do all metal bands
yesss 💯%
@@4md17 right bro I like this kid but usually the people to do every metallica album know and appreciate them more besides just the main 80s stuff
You're very wrong on Unforgiven II, but the fact is that you'll be dealing with people like me where Reload was their first Metallica album. Unfortunately even if it was absolute trash, I only have up to go from here which just meant I fell more in love with the band. If Reload got me, I wasn't going to fall of of the band. BTW I loved Bad Seed. Probably my favorite non radio hit. I was 13 when this came out so we're probably the same age. I think you missed the point on Where the Wild Things are, they've had many years of anti war music and I think this is much more of it. Listen to Disposable Heroes and go back to Where the Wild Things are. Sure they don't compare well, but that's the same basic approach. I think you missed the point on Prince Charming too. Self harm to planting explosives is taking it too literally. It's a reference to self destruction. It's not a face value statement.
Love ReLoad. Metallica "filler" songs are better than any band's hits. Load and ReLoad are so different, unique, and original.
But didn’t you hear him say there were literally like 7 different “tough guy” anthems. Having a lot of the same songs, whether it’s lyrical content, or sound, like in st anger, it gets dry.
That was a hilarious joke... I'm laughing 🤣
No
Unforgiven 2 is a masterpiece. No further questions at this time.
I have a question: When was 'Unforgiven II' ever a masterpiece? 😂
The sequel often wrecks a classic... this was one of those.
Why does Prince Charming always get hate, it’s so good!
i am amused how you use the concert from Plovdiv, Bulgaria '99 through the whole video. Greetings from Bulgaria :)
Thank you for giving Fixxxer some love, one of my favorite songs and super underrated
when I was fourteen I thought the cover art for Reload was a closeup of the sun ngl
i thought that sometimes too
First 3 tracks are certified
I Love Load and Reload albums, the Memory Remains is one of my favorite Metallica songs. I love the video where they are moving around, even though they are staying and the room is going around lol. Have a great day. ❤🙂
11:04-11:06 my favourite song from Reload
I love your reviews , keep the great work!🤟
I'm glad they experimented with different genres of music. It's possible that if they stuck to their thrash metal roots all this time, maybe they would've gotten stale by now. Sometimes, variety can be a good thing. But I understand why the load/reload sound is very divisive. It does seem very out of place, when comparing to the rest of their career. I enjoy all their music, but I totally get why load/reload isn't for everyone.
Agree with most of your points, even tho I think The Unforgiven II is a solid 9/10.
Slither has slightly grown on me, the pre-chorus ("see you crawling") is actually pretty cool, but most tracks from 5 to 11 really are just fillers.
Can you ever be positive?
Inamorata off their new album gives off Load/Reload era vibes but I love it! ❤️
I don‘t understand why you wouldn’t like King Nothing
Loving the series and your thoughts on each album. Would maybe after you've covered thier main albums, consider looking at covers and live albums tbh i'd love to hear your thoughts on s&m as i've been listening to it non stop recently
s&m goes hard af. that actually not a bad idea! i might end up doing that in the future
10/10 album for me. Dark, melodic and kick ass. Does sounds bluesy and heavy from how metálica explained it. I’m glad I don’t hear music like you, I’m pretty sure I enjoy nothing ever lol.
Load is my favorite I only like two songs from re load
What if Load was a triple disc album?
unforgiven II in my opinion is one of the best metallica songs
A man of taste 🤌
Oh hell no 👎 A sequel that ruined a classic...
These retrospectives are clearly done by a Metallica nostalgia merchant (not saying its a bad thing, just it clearly shows in his opinions of the songs). Load & Reload are some of the band's most underrated work in my opinion. There are definitely songs that sound awful on them, and they clearly are created past the band's prime, but I dont hate the direction they went with these two albums. I feel like the author is too quick to dismiss these songs, some of which are my favourites the band has ever written, merely because of their different style compared to the first five albums. These are just my thoughts, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion obviously, but I still really enjoy this series. Keep it up.
I think what makes Low Man’s Lyric work better as a country song than Mama Said is that the country influences are more understated on it. James doesn’t sing in a stereotypically “country” voice, the steel guitar is kept more in the background, etc. The song sounds like it’s using the country influence as a more subtle backdrop rather than the front and center.
It worked cos the song was similar to the eerie vibe on 'No quarter' by Led Zeppelin... a band that also used folk instruments.
Love your videos and I was your 200 sub I’ve watched almost all the videos you have posted
i’m glad you’re enjoying!! thanks for the sun i appreciate it
You’re welcome
will you do garage inc?
Ironically, it was their heaviest sound live.
'And justice for all' was their heaviest sound live.
This Series i literally wait for the next video to release very good quality! Keep it up man
thank you so much for watching! i really appreciate it. glad you’re enjoying :)
I love James bluesy dark voice on this album. Prince charming, devil’s dance, the unforgiven 2, Fuel, fixxxer, Bad seeds, thé memory remains. So much great songs.
So I don’t agree with you at all.
This review feels like how you feel about James voice on the album.
I look at it like if they don’t have the ability to make at least one or two songs that could be placed on any of their first 4 albums then why fuck up there own legacy
I mean, they don’t need a new album to go tour people are going to come out to see them because they want to hear them play the music they known for
I wish slither was longer it’s my favorite off this album. And carpie diem was a a solid song
Man, 8 songs in a Load / Reload edit? I feel like 12-14 songs mixed from both albums would be perfect. Everyone definitely has their different opinions on what's "filler" and what isn't but i mean damn man, Reload has maybe 3 filler songs for me, being Better Than You, Slither, Attitude, and Loads filler songs being "Poor Twisted Me, Thorn Within, and Cure
I agree with a lot of what you said with load and reload and I like your redoing of the album. All I'm saying is I would add King Nothing and Unforgiven II. But aside from that I love how honest you've been.
did not expect this one to come sooner, you are doing a great job with all the albums.
also do megadeth once you're done with metallica
That would be cool to hear @Ahmedic do one on Megadeth....
Your retrospectives on Load and Reload come across as milquetoast first impressions especially with how quick you are to dismiss these songs. Not surprising, considering you yourself said you dreaded listening to them. I too thought they were boring albums at first, but there's this thing called "relistening" and I started to appreciate them a lot more overtime. These videos are just sad reminders of how most people don't want to give these two incredibly overhated albums the time of day.
I'll cap this off with your own words: "It wasn't as bad as the first time hearing it. Kinda got used to it."
P.S. Where the Wild Things Are is an excellent song from the band. Give 13 year old you more credit.
I was a diehard Metallica fan... and these 2 albums crushed my desire for this band. I just wasn't blown away like I had been... listening to their first 5 albums... As a teen, getting the 'black' album after listening to 'And justice for all' was so thrilling for me... and every song was killer!
When I got 'Load'... I felt like my front tire had deflated. I really wasn't excited about 'Reload' coming out, but I bought it anyway... despite just not liking 'The memory remains'... I saw Metallica live in 2000 and they played all new songs w/ a few classics.
It was so disappointing... I even went to see them in 2003 for 'St. Anger"... and never bothered to see Metallica live again.
Low man's lyric sounds like a Springsteen Nebraska outtake
I love load
This is my metallica, love Load and Reload front to back and if its fanboy i don't even care, but there is nothing bad to be said about these albums, and the only people thinking there is are still trying to push a Round Metallica cube through a Square Thrash hole.
Yep, agreed!
I feel like where the Wild Things are could have been worked a lot more sense the title is of a children's book about inner demons and regret so if you confuse the child inner demon problem with the feelings of war and the pain it causes to those who fight in it and who are suffering at home I think you can get something
I'd suggest checking out later videos I've done on Metallica rather than earlier ones since my tastes in Metal changed a bit after a while.
Load and Reload are both so well-rounded, dark, moody. It's hard-edge enough to be heavy, but the emotional journey they take you on is indescribable. The production is impeccable. The mix in my opinion is some of the best they've ever done, beats all the earlier albums by miles. That late 90s early 2000s era of their guitar tone is by far my favourite. Can't beat a Roland JC-120. Not a bad video overall, however not commenting on production and sonic elements really is strange for a overlook. Maybe that wasn't the intention but it's always nice to include them in my opinion. However not recognising meanings behind 'Carpe Diem Baby' is strange to me. I mean seizing the day and living the moment is a filler idea to you? Each to their own but it's a grooving ass track with some killer riffs. The bridge is extremely heavy. Also where's "Where The Wild Things Are"? I mean easily James's best vocal performance for me. The album covers aren't loved by James he's stated this many times in the past, calling it 'deranged' is far fetched. Load and it's predecessor are excellent albums, people are not necessarily directly comparing them to their older albums but I can't shy away for the fact that most of the reviews are coming from a perspective of oh "it's Metallica" so it must sound like "this." They're Metallica and they make Metallica music. This is all my opinion as always.
I completely agree. These Load and Reload retrospectives come across as lousy, half-hearted first impressions. I personally think these records are hidden gems and I find it sad how easily they're dismissed because of the sound change. I love that the band tried new sounds.
@@ImPhynsa Thank you, exactly this.
Poptallica
I'm sorry you don't enjoy this masterpiece! I love Load & ReLoad!
I’m really confused how this guy hears music. I think my music collection Would be empty if I heard bands like him.
I love Alice In Chains and Oasis... but Load/ Reload sounds like a fusion of those 2 bands w/ some Skynyrd blended in.
Haircut Album Part Deux
can’t hear the memory remains without hearing the metallica is gay meme
To me, all the song titles and lyrics from these albums sound like they were written by the bully at school who was picking on Kurt Cobain.
Skip st anger and do death magnetic next
Sorry dude. But "unforgiven 2" is a masterpiece👌👌 no doubt about that
This is why Lars isn't allowed to pick the cover anymore.
I used to listen to Better than you before I played football. { Rugby league in Australia } Set the tone for what was about to happen.
I saw the Load and Re Load tour concerts ,in Las Vegas.. I hated Load when it came out back in 1996.. I was 13 years old. I tried to give it a chance .
I think the issue is that a lot of us were 13 years old and couldn't quite fathom what the guys were doing given the dramatic change of style. Nowadays, listening to these albums as an adult, they seem to be amazing accomplishments that only adds to their legacy. Load in particular is one of my favourite albums
honestly you should get more views your video are great ! (sorry for my bad english)
thank you!!
(your english is fantastic)
You're doing a decent job with these videos and have been right most of the time. I was 12 when Kill Em All came out and it definitely deserves a B- and Lightning a B. I don't know if you have listened to Slayer, if not, you must. Start with Reign in Blood
St anger when?
aiming for early next week
Thanks for at least showing love to low man lyric. Always have loved that song but I think you should spend some more time with the album that’s what I did and ended up liking the whole thing more than I thought I wouldn
Contrary to the Load video, this time your opinions only 97% stink.
Hated Re-Load….3 songs are quality & the rest are filler…..ugh. At the time, I wasn’t used to listening to Metallica albums that weren’t quality….this was sad for me…but yeah, I like your idea of a trimmed down quality Load album…mine would be:
Memory Remains
Fuel
Unforgiven 2
2x4
Ain’t My Bitch(I know u hate that one tho)
The House Jack Built
King Nothing
Until it Sleeps
You’re right. Most of these 2 albums are ULTRA-STOCK 😖
Carpe Diem Baby, Fuel and Fixxxer are the three best songs on the album and then the guy rates the song "Carpe Diem Baby" as bad and and then praises the song Fixxxer. Something is wrong here. It's like someone praises the song "Battery" and then gives a bad rating to "Master of puppets". And that's why it's so important when reviewing an album not to be "What I like or don't like" but to make an objective review of the album. Nobody cares what an anonymous person from you tube likes/dislikes, he is not a well-known and proven music reviewer from a famous magazine or something like that. And me personally find the name of the song is wacky and good but that is not important thing about the song.
Out of the two albums reload was always my preferred album. Ironically the two songs you liked low man's lyric and fixxxer are the most boring for me haha as a 21 year old I wanted metal and the rest of the album gave me that after the complete disappointment of load. The other two songs were just never what I wanted to hear from Metallica. We all have our opinions and that's what makes these discussions cool. Great video dude 🤘🤘
foist
Fixxxer was arguably the best song to come out of the Load sessions. If Fixxxer wasnt on Reload I would have no reason except for The Memory Remains and Low Mans Lyric to even listen to it. In my opinion Load was the better album.
Load and Reload are not bad albums, I get why people don't like them, and yes there are weird and weak moments on both, but looking back both albums have some really good songwriting. Overall, I think both suffer from being way too long - they can easily be better if they were more concise (~50 minutes).
Hatred against Load and Reload isn't that big these days and the albums have a more positive reception nowadays.
to me its just the vocals and the basic riffs and solos
I dont like this album but tbh i dont like much after justice i don't like their hard rock side just because im huge on thrash and extreme metal so hard rock isnt appealing for me
why dont you just DONT LISTEN to it and problem solved. music is art, some is good to individuals, some is not. but i want to listen something you wrote, played or produced.
Megadeth was fucking way better during this time its hurting me to listen to this
For sure, but dude I remember buying risk and getting so pissed off I gave it away
they did a little bit less worse, the only great album is youthanasia
Youthanasia is a masterpiece.
But that general era was good as well from Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, and I'll even throw in Risk.
Like Load/Reload, Risk gets a bad rap because of the change in style. But I love all those albums.
We all love both bands classic albums. That's a given. But only some of us remained when both bands changed styles.
Megadeth DID release quite a few thrash albums after though.
Only album I don't like from either band is Lulu.
Maybe I'm in the minority but I do love both bands.
Disagree on the unforgiven 2. But good review overall.
couple of filler tracks like Unforgiven 2 , Fuel and Slither, but also masterpieces like Where the Wilds Things are, Fixxxer, Carpe Diem Baby or Devils Dance
8/10
Why is bloody urine "art?" I do that every time I drink too much. Nobody pays me for photos of my toilet..... 🤷♂️
Devils dance is crap
If only metallica could handle their egos and make one great record out of two. Many such cases with double albums even White Album by the Beatles has some stuff I would remove
there`s just enough good material from these two album to fill an EP ...lazy , uninspired and overall weak songwriting
hetfield was trying to be like corrosion of conformity on load and reload
Unforgiven 2 is miles ahead better than unforgiven. and unforgiven 3 if it wasn't for its bad mixing it would be the best unforgiven song...
It’s my favorite of the three.
