WOW!! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!! This is the best guitar solo I have heard so far on the #RockJourney. What are some of the best performances have y’all seen?? 🤯
here are my two favourite, non-R-rated performances i've seen... Marilyn Manson "The Reflecting God" ua-cam.com/video/c_jRyj9I9DA/v-deo.html Marilyn Manson philosophy at its finest, imho... I went to God just to see But i was looking at me I saw Heaven & Hell are lies When I'm God, everyone dies my interpretation: i looked for God, but found myself as the one controlling my life. BUT, if i am God and therefore there is no Heaven or Hell, does that mean everyone dies when i do...? also, he is not anti-spiritual nor blasphemous to say we need no forgiveness, imho. he is (in all his music) merely pointing out if humans are here to learn, mistakes are inevitable and do not need "forgiveness". just understanding and growth. Nine Inch Nails "Copy Of A [live Fuji Rock Festival 2013]" ua-cam.com/video/FnobCwo0tyQ/v-deo.html this one is one of the coolest ways for a band to come out onstage i believe!
Brian May (Queen ) Last Horizon live. All 🎸 also do the video revelation) Brian & Eddie, we're good friends. They did a project together about space. You do know Dr. Brian May holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. ✨🌟
When the video goes blue and he makes the guitar sound like a violin and a cello is insane! I have mad respect for Jimmy and Stevie but you just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player ever. Period! RIP Eddie.
I stay away from genius. Inventor seems more fitting. Tesla like. Always tinkering and learning. A kid in dad’s garage playing with his tools. Desired out come welcome but lessons along the way open more doors then ever and expanding with new ideas
You said the best, and I’ve heard some describe it the same. He and that creation of a guitar “The Frankenstrat” was one. And what we heard was his unique way of expressing himself through a higher power. He’s not the fastest,he’s not the king of rock n roll, but he’s the closest we’ll ever see or hear that can express hisself so clear it’s hard to see and hear. It takes a pure heart of music to understand this, and you don’t have to be musical talent to understand. 200 years from now musical professors will be teaching his theory next to Mozart and Beethoven. We were so fortunate to witness this in our lifetime. Great reaction and thank you for showing this to the world and to a another audience. Eddie’s greatness should be shown to the world to promote love and peace and unity for all of humanity.
Great reaction! More *Van Halen!* Anything from their *first* album and/or *Fair Warning!!!* I had 3rd row, center seats at Madison Square Garden in NYC!!! I screamed, "I LOVE YOU EDDIE" during a quick break in "Eruption" - He looked right at me... smiled and winked!!! 😉 Such an incredible night!!! 💜💫✌🏼🎵
You said it perfectly, better than any review I've seen...total, complete mastery, thus other-worldy expression of his soul. Period. Nice work! RIP EVH
When Van Halen was unleashed, every rock guitarist was blown away and tried to mimic him. Not many could, but those that got close were instant guitar heros.
I remember going to that concert in like 1987. Same outfit he had on. I joked about the parachute pants. And having to have his cigarette the whole concert. He paid for it!!!
They started playing running with the devil and I said… ohhh that’s who this is… they were one of 5 bands warming up for Bob Seger at Summer Celebration ‘78 Hours at Bay City Central High School. All day concert, fantastic show!
15:26 In fact, Eddie not only mastered all the modern guitar techniques you've ever seen, he CREATED them (when he was 20'ish only; Revolutionized not only the rock/metal music, but influencing "almost" the entire pop music lineage as well)
He was a musical genius. What a lot of people don't know I'd Eddie could not read music. He actually started out as a pianist and won several competitions. He started playing drums and his brother Alex played guitar. Then Alex said hey why don't you play this guitar, let me do drums. The rest is history. His son Wolfgang is as talented as his father and plays all instruments himself.
In rock guitar it gets no better than that. One of the very few guitarists that have made the guitar an extension of their own selves. Finger tapping has been around since the 50's and till the late 70's was almost always taped with one finger of the picking hand and fingered by one or two fingers at the extreme three. Eddie took this little trick and turned it into a pure art form. He may not have invented the technique but he sure as hell perfected it. The tour was the OU812 tour, this show was in Hartford Connecticut which is the stop before or after (depending on direction the tour is headed) after Providence, RI where I had the privilege of witnessing this spectacle. You think you got goosebumps watching the video? I don't even have words what it was like witnessing it live, seeing god might come close. Peace
I saw this tour. Still have the shirt still have the concert stub still in amazement to this day when I saw that very solo! The eighties were the best time to be in my twenties!
Got to see Van Halen in the late 70's, three times in the 80's, and once in the 90's. Would have to say BY FAR best guitar solos I have seen. I have seen over 100 Rock/Metal concerts (mostly in the 80's) and Eddie WAS Special (R.I.P. Eddie, you are VERY missed).
I'm 66 and grew up in Hollywood. I was fortunate enough to watch them grow as a band. I saw them as a backyard band in 1973 when they were Mammoth. I saw the first show they played at a major club (Gazzari's in 74), the first show they played at an auditorium (Pasadena Civic Center in 75), and every tour after that. Including the largest audience they played to (400,000 at US 83). The only person whose solos were even close at that time were Randy's. Everyone that followed was an Eddie or Randy clone (and somewhat boring in my book).
I've seen 60 concerts but I regret not ever seeing Van Halen. I did see Sammy Hagar (The lead singer that introduced Eddie) when he warmed up for Boston's 2nd tour...
Someone asked Eddie where he got his music from. He said "it doesn't come from me, it comes from the Man Upstairs. I'm just his vessel." Also, he and his brother Alex (the band's drummer) were trained as classical pianists before they picked up the guitar and drums at the age of around 12 or 13. Their father was a professional jazz musician. So music was in their blood. I recommend "I'm the One", "Mean Street", "Push Comes to shove", "Me Wise Magic", and "Pleasure Dome". The studio versions are typically the best.
Don't forget cathedral .....one of his best. He played beginning of it here in about the middle part. As good as a pianist........i wish he would've stuck to guitar to create even more legacy.
Eddie was a guitar God they will never be another like him in my lifetime or probably yours they come for few in between but if you listen to the music and then listen to Van Halen everything he's playing has come from every song they ever made rip Eddie

Many may argue, but Eddie was the GOAT in the heavy metal genre. This is the greatest intro ever! One of my great memories is that I got to see Eddie at his best live.
The part of the solo where the screen goes blue, he is using his volume knob to create that haunting echoing sound, known as manual tremolo. One of the hardest techniques to perform on a guitar without using anything but your own timing and knowledge of your instrument! He was a guitar god!
He's also using a Eventide H3000 Harmonizer effect... And it's volume swells not manual tremolo...Been playing guitar for 30 years and never heard of manual tremolo...
In my estimation, there were primarily two rock guitarists who "liberated" the electric guitar from straightforward chords, scales, melody. Those two were the great Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen.
At the beginning of the video you asked..."How does he get the guitar to like that." I cant do it yet. But it's simple.....LITERALLY decades of practice. I'm learning guitar and if i can become even one quarter that good I'll be happy.
Actually, Eddie and his brother Alex (drums) began being taught classical piano as young boys, before their family even moved from Holland to Pasadena, Ca.........and they then began playing the opposite instruments when they were young teens...Eddie got some drums and Alex got a guitar, but there came a point when Eddie picked up Alex's guitar and so Alex started messing with Eddie's drums.....and Eddie immediately took to the guitar like Alex never could. Hey, Tone, I hope you will play a number of these songs by The Carpenters: Top of The World; Ticket to Ride; Help; And When He Smiles; Superstar; We've Only Just Begun; Masquerade; A Song For You; Rainy Days and Mondays; We've Only Just Begun; Close to You; A Rainbow Connection; Breaking Up is Hard to do; I can't Smile Without You; I just Keep Falling In Love Again; Make Believe It's Your First Time; For All We Know; Only Yesterday; I'll Never Fall In Love Again; A Place to Hideaway; Mr. Postman; All You Get from Love is a Love Song; I Need Some Time; Sing a Song; All of My Life; Bless the Beasts and Children; Calling Your Name Again; Goodbye to Love; Hurting Each Other; I Believe You; I Have You; I Need to Be in Love; I Won't Last a Day Without You; Jambalaya (On the Bayou); Sweet, Sweet Smile; There's a Kind of Hush; Those Good Old Dreams; Where Do I Go from Here; You. These are all good songs; plus, there are more :)
"How?" That's what everyone says. It's exactly what I say (to this day) the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix's "House Burning Down." And it was recorded in 1967! t's on UA-cam and if you haven't heard it yet I'd like to see a reaction video for that one. 🎸
Saw Van Halen in the 70s,80s,90s,20s. Best guitarist ever in my opinion. Musical genius. He took over where Hendrix left off. There will never be another. RIP Eddie. When you left us you took a piece of our hearts. You are truly missed.
@@steveh9789 You have got to remember the time. Hendrix started it back in the 60s. At that time he was the shit. Never been done before with the sounds that he made. It was fresh in that time. He started it. When Eddie came along he just took it to another level. I didn't say anything about Hendrix touching it. I just stated a fact, that he started it. You got to give credit where credit is due.
Hey there brother, all I have to say is you must watch Neil Peart (Rush) on his drum solo in (in Germany). Neil was to drums in his drum solo, as Eddie VH was to his guitar in his solo. You've got to watch and react. PS. that was Eddies older brother on drums.
As someone who's very familiar with Eddie Van Halen's technique, the hardest part (for me) to play in this solo is the "Cathedral" segment where he's manipulating the volume knob with his right hand and "hammering" on the notes with his left hand, making the guitar sound like orchestra instruments (cello, violin, etc) starting at 7:50. Basically, you fret a note with the volume knob at 0 and then you turn the volume knob all the way up to 10. Eddie's doing it so fast and smooth. He was a master at coordinating both of his hands together and is very hard to match. This is part of the live video that came out when singer Sammy Hagar joined the band. Former singer David Lee Roth left the band (or was fired, depending on whose story you follow) and hired Steve Vai to be his guitar player. Steve Vai plays Jack Butler in a movie with Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid, Cobra Kai) as the main character, and the two square off against each other on guitar. *Guitar Battle Scene from "Crossroads" (1986) | Steve Vai* (tXfZtlAPUNc). That movie came out at about the same time the Van Halen concert video came out.
Guitar Hero that made me laugh... This is Eddie Van Halen; he has been doing this since the 70s. He is a guitar GOD. I have seen him play live 4 times, and he rocked every time. ICONIC
Yeah, that whole band is a powerhouse. Good on you for realizing what’s next! They have a huge catalog, but I’m gonna have to recommend Hot For Teacher, official video. It’s always a good time with these guys!
I’ve actually seen this….he was amazing. RIP genius EVH.❤️🎼🎶🎶❤️ Everything from classical music to jazz,r&b….then technic extravaganza…in the middle of a concert. His brother on drums…..that pair was something special.😎Welcome to rock n roll….it’s a party like none other.
@@jeffdavis6715 he’s awesome, no doubt about it. He was a fan of Eric Clapton; saw him live 3 times. My fav guitarists- not in this order: Eric Clapton,Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, EVH, Alex Lifeson, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi…..for starters. 🤘😎
Love your reaction. 👍 I saw this tour when they came to my area, and was blown away. Still stands as one of the best concerts I've seen, and I've been to A BUNCH over my course of years. While writing music, he also spent A LOT of time experimenting with different effects, and trying to come up with sounds. It's not one of his better known solos, but check out "Baluchitherium" from the Balance album, he gets some great & amazing sounds from his guitar.
It started when him and his brother, Alex, went to see Led Zeppelin in L.A. During the concert, Eddie seen Jimmy Page tapping with his left hand on the neck of the guitar while holding his right hand up high. Eddie took this basic tapping technique and brought it into a whole new dimension.
"A special moment in history" ....indeed. I'm so glad this is out there for the world to see. Still hard to watch without tearing up. Thanks for posting
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen in the late 70s , 80s & 2000 many times . Edward along with his older brother Alex on drums, Michael Anthony on bass and David Lee Roth or Sammy Hager (this video) on vocals were always very impressive. Fun, silly, partying or just good time band.
His son Wolfgang is no slouch either! Just released his first album and played every instrument himself! Since,he has secured the rest of the band and is touring.check out don't back down, its a banger for sure!
Great reactions dude. I love the way you described Eddie as being spiritually connected to his guitar. They say he never went anywhere without one when he was growing up. He brought it to school, to his girlfriend's house, to the dinner table; everywhere. He couldn't stop practicing. Eddie never hung out after school because he had to practice. He was completely 100% ALL IN. It was his religion til the day he died. I feel so blessed to have been around for the discovery of this amazing artist. Genius.
He’s a Eddie fan. He knows VH music. He just is doing his social media light handed for his followers who don’t. He’s probably degreed From a university in western music.
Now, this is the most genuine reaction you can get by seeing a master piece like that. Great speach, you really found the right words to describe the feeling of watching that epic performance. Cheers, and welcome to the amazing world of Rock!
You are right, Eddie's soul is in that guitar. He, with his brother Alex (the drummer) are classically trained musicians, capable of playing many instruments. Eddie actually started playing drums, until he caught Alex playing them. They switched, and the rest is musical history.
Well what you just seen literally changed the world of music forever that was the day the music changed nobody had ever seen anything or heard anything like that before
Excellent reaction. Eddie Van Halen was king of rock guitar exactly because of what you just witnessed -- he could do anything and was truly "connected" to his instrument. Another god-level guitarist to react to is Stevie Ray Vaughan performing Texas Flood (from Live at the El Mocambo). Make sure you watch the live version so you can understand why he was considered the greatest blues guitarist of all time. That performance is legendary.
The bass and drum solo's at this same concert was equally insane. Bet the therapist bills for that guitar to deal with that kind of abuse is astronomical.
Now for a mind blowing drum solo you need to listen to In a Gadda Divda by Iron Butterfly. It’s a long song but worth checking out. From the late 60’s when I was in jr. high school
Once Eddie learned how to play the guitar (self taught), he tried to emulate the sounds of his idols and influences. But, since the family was poor, he could not afford the electronics and devices his idols used. Eddie had to try and figure it out in a different way strictly with the guitar and different parts as well, and most importantly, techniques. It was those challenges that helped him develop his unique style and made him who he was, which in turn ended up with him being labeled the Greatest Guitarist of All Time. While classically trained, he admitted that he couldn't read music. He faked all his piano lessens through mimicry, but retained enough to get by. Jimi Hendrix is by far one of the greatest guitarists of all time, whom Eddie looked up to and was inspired by, as well as Jimi Page. But they both used effects through pedals and boards. Eddie at the onset didn't have that luxury, thus creating his own style. A style that changed a whole industry and the way the guitar can be played. No other artist, dead or alive, can make that claim. When you can have other great musicians stand back, look at you and say 'W.T.F?!?!', you know you've done something special.
Jimi made a lot of his sound with homemade pedals and switches when he started as well but I agree with your Jimi Eddie, I add SRV as well to the GOAT status
@@d.a.w.975 Plenty of articles and interviews out there that EVH has Hendrix as a minor influence, mainly because of his fingering technique with harmonics. His listed influences are #1 Early Clapton, Allan Holdsworth, Toni Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimi Page, Pete Townsend, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Lukather, And Leslie West.
Oh. Vocalist Sammy Hager said in an interview that his 2 favorite guitarist are EVH and Joe Satriani. Check out “Satch Boogie” from Satriani Live It also has is original drummer still playing with him (Jeff Campitelli) and Jeff is also one of the best in music. Just ask Paul Bostaph(Slayer) or Lars Ulrich (Metallica) who studied with him.

These are all good songs; plus, there are more :)
the worst part is that when youre a guitarist and know what hes doing, his techniques are still mindblowing
I never get tired of watching new people discover the genius that was Edward. Blessed to have seen him in 1984 and 88
Me neither. It’s like watching a kid on Christmas morning!
"How?" That's what everyone says. It's exactly what I say (to this day) the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix's "House Burning Down." And it was recorded in 1967! t's on UA-cam and if you haven't heard it yet I'd like to see a reaction video for that one. 🎸
His brother on drums..they made such an amazing amount of music!! RIP EVH
Saw Van Halen in the 70s,80s,90s,20s. Best guitarist ever in my opinion. Musical genius. He took over where Hendrix left off. There will never be another. RIP Eddie. When you left us you took a piece of our hearts. You are truly missed.
Where Hendrix left off ? Hendrix couldn't touch this.
One of the 1st Van Halen songs ever heard on the radio was ' Ain't talking bout love ' You would loveeeee it ( studio version ) 😁😁
I’ve watched every possible reaction of this video. Yours is the best .
Bro that’s mad luv bro lol thank you 🙏🏾 I appreciate the fact that you enjoyed watching this with ya boy Tone
Hey there brother, all I have to say is you must watch Neil Peart (Rush) on his drum solo in (in Germany). Neil was to drums in his drum solo, as Eddie VH was to his guitar in his solo. You've got to watch and react. PS. that was Eddies older brother on drums.
EVH is the GOAT. Keep in mind....before this solo, they had done an almost entire concert. They still did a song or two after this solo.
Right he became one with that guitar man! Amazing performance🤘🏽🤘🏽
He was the greatest ever! He just seemed to go to "Another" place when he played. We will never see another like him.
It was clearly a happy place too, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen another musician smile like him. He was ALWAYS smiling when he was playing 😁!
Guitar Hero that made me laugh... This is Eddie Van Halen; he has been doing this since the 70s. He is a guitar GOD. I have seen him play live 4 times, and he rocked every time. ICONIC
Yeah it always makes me laugh when I hear these young ones listening to our music and always bringing up Guitar Hero. Give me a break
Eddie van Halen is a legend that will never have a match
They had their own guitar hero game it’s called guitar hero Van Halen
Yeah, that whole band is a powerhouse. Good on you for realizing what’s next! They have a huge catalog, but I’m gonna have to recommend Hot For Teacher, official video. It’s always a good time with these guys!
I was fortunate to see him do this live. I'm 42 and I'm 100% sure I'll never see a better guitar player in person as long as I live.
I was at both nights of this show😀
@@jeffdavis6715 nothing like it, right?!
@@geoffsullivan7902 he is the best guitar player by far. I seen him 10 times always great.
Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Eddie van Halen's eruption solo,a priceless master piece by the king of the guitar......long live the king 🎸🤘🤘🤘
I was in total shock when i saw this way back in 1986 my friend marc hernandez had this concert "live without a net" on VHS 😊
When you wind your own pickups, searching for the 'sound' you want...you've reached another level
There will never be another like Eddie!!!!
King of Ten Fingers and Six Strings.
Oh BTW SUB here, and fun fact: When they first started out Eddie's brother Alex played guitar and he played drums, I am so glad they switched.
Well what you just seen literally changed the world of music forever that was the day the music changed nobody had ever seen anything or heard anything like that before
I got to see him do this live 3 times and it sends chills down your spine
Excellent reaction. Eddie Van Halen was king of rock guitar exactly because of what you just witnessed -- he could do anything and was truly "connected" to his instrument. Another god-level guitarist to react to is Stevie Ray Vaughan performing Texas Flood (from Live at the El Mocambo). Make sure you watch the live version so you can understand why he was considered the greatest blues guitarist of all time. That performance is legendary.
There is no better!
RIP Eddie ❤️
Eddie is doing what is called "tapping" the strings...RIP magic man!!💙🎶💙🎸
Will do 🫡
Untouchable! WOW!
Seen Van Halen live in Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 over 25 years ago, I was third row, his technique was perfect.
Congratulations. You got it. You felt the spirit. Amazing words. Thank you man.
