Eddie was an innovator and an incredibly gifted musician of which we might never see the likes of again. His legacy and his music will live on. RIP Eddie.

Yes, his guitar is custom made by Eddie himself, he talks about buying all these guitars and taking parts from a really good guitar and putting other parts from other guitars. He also used parts that had nothing to do with guitars and it worked. The guitar manufacturers listened to his improvements and started making guitars the way he made his guitar.
you asked at about the 14 minute mark "if there were people at this concert or any of their concerts "back in the day" that were present bc of an invite, free ticket, chaperone etc and not knowing what they were about to experience..? yes. this concert was in New Haven, Ct. late august '86 b/t/w. I saw them a month later in Houston Sept.29. I have ran into several people over the years who admitted to being at the Houston concert that night, for one reason or other, and each said they were blown away. I've seen VH 9x and can honestly say the 5150 show was the most high energy, intense of all. (i was unable to see them during the Roth years though)
He had the back of the guitar open, exposing the springs. Notice how he kept it close to his body. He used his leg and hips to get everything out of it
That was his guitar. All his. There was an interview with his wife Valerie Bertanelli who said he couldn’t rehearse that solo. He knew what he wanted to throw in to it and some were riffs from his songs and some of the ones he loved, but no rehearsal. He was so amazing as was his brother as well. Didn’t care for the music after DLR left because it just wasn’t Van Halen anymore to me. I didn’t care for Sammy Hagar before Van Halen, but he owes all his success to those brothers. Eddie and Alex are legends of rock music and it’s so sad to see a replacement come in and take away what made them who they were, but it didn’t mean Eddie and Alex didn’t fight back about it to Hagar a lot. I’m so glad as a music lover that I was able to see them together as a full band when I was 6 but I remember everything about it. Never saw them with Hagar.
That guitar is called The Frankenstrat. Much like Frankensteins monster was just put together with pieces from multiple people, such was this Fender stratocaster that he rebuilt a few times from scratch.
He was so great! Unfortunately he died on my birthday. You were talking about throwing guitar picks... I caught Nuno Bettencourt's (Extreme) in 1990, in my hair. :)
AND whats even crazier is , when he was interviewed and showed this video he said he was so loaded he doesnt even remember doing this solo , he played loaded many times !!!
After Alex and Eddie switched instruments when they were kids, Eddie was able to naturally able to play a piece in no time that Alex had been trying to play but couldn’t…..also, Eddie would be sitting on his bed practicing and Alex would go out and socialize…he would come back hours later and Eddie would still be there playing the guitar. These stories are directly from Alex Van Halen.
This is eruption and live without a net and solo called cathedral and part he plays from song mean street all put into one . Like you said this video was in Connecticut I was at this concert and seen them live then they came to massachusettes were I live my friend and I always every year would follow them around to different states near us we would see them live in concert at least 5 or 6 times a year everytime was amazing so many great classic songs and Eddie always did this solo everytime I was spoiled and still to this day I watch this video and can remember being there I get goose bumps hair standing up on my arms takes me back to that time and other times seen them the man and this group true icons legends one the best live bands to ever see as well . HATED when we had covid times Eddie was getting treated to try and beat cancer over seas they were doing well with his treatment I believe or remember reading about how he was being treated for it but they didnt have it here in United States so Eddie always traveled to get the best medical treatment. but then covid he couldn't fly anywhere to continue to get treated and well you know what happened next he started getting more ill and passed away. sucks to he got help to get sober with the help from his son. and while he was getting sick towards the end he made a mens with Sammy Hagar and they wanted get back together to play alive again but covid went on longer Eddie got more sick I was hoping and raying covid would've stoped sooner and maybe Eddie would've got his treatment for his cancer and we could've seen them pay again live concert one ore time Eddie passed away I was so sad still am but his music will live forever with us thank you Eddie. I was also so sad were Alex still holds a grudge and they were not able to all get together to put on a great tribute concert to the fans after his passing away and especially for eddies son wolf being stuck in the middle of it all they even seen Michael Anthony as well and tried to forget the bad ties and arguments and disagreements about what happened in past. and most them all wanted to pay tribute to him wolf did kind of tribute at foo fighters concert when there drummer passed away then because he got tired the bickering between everybody who was going play in concert and Alex was deistated after losing Eddie and was holding grudges but I understand going through that grief losing loved one and sometimes taken it out on others I lost my brother and dad within 24 hours each other I was mad for longtime but eventually was able to try and put aside the bad memories and try remember all the good times it helps. but even I have some bad days here and there but mostly remember the good times. got remember people we only live her on earth for short period times I forgive people alot for there mistakes or f ups I try to stay positive and be happy and live in the moment try to put aside or bad things in your life live it up put away cell phones live in the moments have those great memories hold on to them in your heart and mind cause at the end of our lives thats alll we got is thinking the good times and bad times we were in. As they were ‘half breed’ immigrants who couldn’t speak the language. And look at where they ended up man! A definitive American Dream story. Eddie played the solo on Michael Jackson’s Beat it, re-arranged it so it sounded more ‘Rock’ and introduced Michael to a wider audience for free. Eddie buried Dimebag Darrell from Pantera with his original Bumblebee Guitar when Dime’s life partner Rita asked him to make a Copy Ed said “an Original deserves an Original” Vinnie Paul ( Pantera ) Dimebag’s brother says the last words his brother said to him was Van f+*in Halen’ their nightly ritual before hitting the stage. He gave Jerry Cantrell 5150 Stacks after touring with Alice In Chains and the last concert he went to was TOOL and a TOOL fan asked him to take a picture of the fan in front of Tool’s stage and he did, The fan had no idea who Ed was and Ed was chill with it. / no ‘don’t you know who I am’ attitude. Frank Zappa loved and respected Eddie and got him to teach Dweezil who was obsessed with ED When Frank died Ed was THE 1st first to call with condolences and to offer any assistance. He did the same for Chris Cornell Guitarist Pete Thorn when Chris Passed He got Allan Holdsworth signed to Warner to introduce Allan to a wider audience He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, popularising the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose Whammy Bar and later he developed the D-Tuna addition to go from standard to drop D Les Paul Said Ed, him & Leo Fender are the only guys who know how to make guitars His 5150 Amp is still THE go to amp and sound of Modern metal, Gojira use the EVH 5150 His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever. He bravely and quietly fought cancer for 20 years Much love to Alex Wolfie, Valerie, Janie, Dave, Michael, Sammy, Gary & all the fans that lost this Brother from another mother Enjoy EVH ua-cam.com/video/L9r-NxuYszg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Hazardteam
I cannot imagine anyone going who didn't know Van Halen, or Eddie's talent but I suppose it's possible. I saw them during this tour and yes - this part was mesmerizingly good. He credits Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin with giving him the "tapping" guitar technique he was well known for. Eddie also has the sweetest smile ☺️ and just looks so happy with his best friend in his hands, the "Frankenstrat" ❤️ He is sorely missed.
08:47 is done by hammering on a note with his left hand and resting the side of his right hand on the strings and moving it up the neck. It's quite easy actually but still a very cool trick.
He's making love to his guitar and by extension (voyeurism?) I had a multiple ear-gasm. The cool tone you were hearing around the 13-minute mark is his instrumental called Cathedral from the great album Diver Down. I thought it was a synthesizer when I first heard the album.
I had no idea this was just down the street from me in New Haven Connecticut I wish I could have gone but I was only 13. 😆 Another great one to check out is a concert in Canada 1997 and he did the song a year to the day in the middle of the song he broke out into an amazing solo.

Actually the guitar picks have the band and the player's names on them. I have at least a dozen... Kiss, Boston, Styx, Eagles. Eddie helped create the nut lock system that allow the deep wham Bar dives without taking the guitar out of tune.

Never saw them with Hagar.
...."that guitar needs another cigarette"....lmao
Best line I've heard listening to these reactions...🤘🤘🤘
This was only half way thru the show…. He is the GOAT
1986 Ed was like 31 I was 19 and I saw this tour beyond killer 🤘🎸 rip brother 🎸🤘🎸
That guitar is called The Frankenstrat. Much like Frankensteins monster was just put together with pieces from multiple people, such was this Fender stratocaster that he rebuilt a few times from scratch.
The drummer is his brother Alex.
Something you all can't do 😅
This is one of the few channels who know very little about Van Halen that pointed out that the "Cathedral" section sounded like a violin
And that was the point, because Eddie and his brother were raised in classical music. And Eddie wanted to make a guitar piece that sounded as such
He was so great!
These stories are directly from Alex Van Halen.
when Eddie is slapping the guitar it the beginning of Mean Street
Well you got part of it right Eddie was put on this planet to play guitar. His dad saw it Alex saw it everyday. He
This is eruption and live without a net and solo called cathedral and part he plays from song mean street all put into one . When ever I get sad I watch this video and remember the greatest times I had with my brother and friends being hear witnessing one the all time best ever. and how much fun we had together.Van Halen and led Zeppelin are my 2 favorite bands all time.van Halen was my very first concert I ever went to. eddie and Alex solo every time blew my away and even mike Anthony base solo was awesome so many great classic songs . eddie one of the all time greatest guiterest every to play .after I seen them live the first time when ever the came to town I live in americas hometown Plymouth Massachusetts the would play Mansfield or other near bye place then id go to other states close to see them live also.I ended up seeing them live in concert probably around 28 times seen them with David lee Roth ,Gary Sharon, and Sammy Hagar on vocals seen them more with Sammy.always one my favorite concerts I've been to a lot shows and all time great bands.you could always her and feel eddies guitar go right through your soul and feel the vibrations it was like a trip even when I was sober and did no drugs or booze.my other all time concert was led zepplin at the old Boston garden 2 concerts back to back I had tickets for both concerts sold out in 10 mins.I could got 3000 dollars for 1 when I got them and they only cost 30 dollars I had 11 tickets for both shows I brought all my best friends to both shows when ever we here a zepplin or Van Halen song we all crank it up and remember some the greatest and funnest times of our life.I took my brother to see both shows both led zepplin and Van Halen he said was best times his life and thanked me for taking him and his friends as well.we took a limo to the shows so nobody had to worry about driving.my brother passed away at age 51 3 years ago I miss him so much.when ever song comes on from both bands I think those times and my hairs stand up on my arms some the greatest music ever.and I know brother watching over me and saying I remember chad.I have some his ashes in a music note charm gold chain I were and take with me to every concert I go to were still rocking out.love your guys page and reactions keep doing it you guys are cool guys . so sorry for me venting and leaving super long message comment for anyone to read. awesome reaction guys
Eddie built his own guitars nobody else
Kramer made the one he is using in this video
Brian May did too, but it is rare
$85 Frankenstrat.... built from 4 different guitars. After that he has 4 patents for the changes he made to the guitar. The back side of guitar has an open box.. Eddie Van Halen forever changed the way rock was played after the first Van Halen album was released...
Cathedral is from Diver Down(1982)….my first concert was that tour!
I caught one of Eddie's picks at the Tacoma Dome on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour....Alice In Chains was the supporting act...needless to say it was one of the best shows I ever attended....my to favorite bands
I have one of his stage used picks from that tour. I have about 30 of his t to though his career from every tour 1986-2015.
Thank you for such a wonderful tribute to our King Edward.
watching interviews with him and other kind folks like yourself paying tribute to Eddie and reactions makes it somewhat easier to bear.
Rock / Metal / Guitar Music rarely gets mainstream exposure and respect so it is greatly appreciated you guys doing this.
There’s a Bad Religion ( Punk Band ) Lyric that says it al “ Everyone you love leaves a mark on your soul,
The world is a little less bright without King Edward I’m fighting cancer and depression and EVH has been an integral part of my life since day one.It may some daft but it feels like I’ve lost a family member.
His devotion to the instrument and chasing tone is unparalleled.
This is a brilliant interview if you haven’t seen it ua-cam.com/video/yb26D8bBZB8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Z%C3%B3caloPublicSquare
most people don’t know the King Edward was a bi-racial half Asian / half white Immigrant and that his lifelong friends were the black kids who stood up for them when they came to the US.
Eddie buried Dimebag Darrell from Pantera with his original Bumblebee Guitar when Dime’s life partner Rita asked him to make a Copy Ed said “an Original deserves an Original”
Vinnie Paul ( Pantera ) Dimebag’s brother says the last words his brother said to him was Van f+*in Halen’ their nightly ritual before hitting the stage.
He did the same for Chris Cornell Guitarist Pete Thorn when Chris Passed
He got Allan Holdsworth signed to Warner to introduce Allan to a wider audience
He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, popularising the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose
Whammy Bar and later he developed the D-Tuna addition to go from standard to drop D
Les Paul Said Ed, him & Leo Fender are the only guys who know how to make guitars
His 5150 Amp is still THE go to amp and sound of Modern metal, Gojira use the EVH 5150
His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever.
He bravely and quietly fought cancer for 20 years
Much love to Alex Wolfie, Valerie, Janie, Dave, Michael, Sammy, Gary & all the fans that lost this Brother from another mother
Enjoy EVH ua-cam.com/video/L9r-NxuYszg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Hazardteam
Great tribute
RIP King Edward.
80s my friends wish you could seen them.
"he looks like super young though" .... DUDE, it was 1986 !! That was 36 years ago !! :D
08:47 is done by hammering on a note with his left hand and resting the side of his right hand on the strings and moving it up the neck. It's quite easy actually but still a very cool trick.
Eddie built his own guitars n his garage he never had anybody customized his guitars
Rip Eddie 🖤🌹
EVH FOREVER
He's making love to his guitar and by extension (voyeurism?) I had a multiple ear-gasm.
The cool tone you were hearing around the 13-minute mark is his instrumental called Cathedral from the great album Diver Down. I thought it was a synthesizer when I first heard the album.
He combined parts of many guitars to build that guitar himself and he also custom built his amp to achieve the sound that he wanted!
I had no idea this was just down the street from me in New Haven Connecticut I wish I could have gone but I was only 13. 😆
Another great one to check out is a concert in Canada 1997 and he did the song a year to the day in the middle of the song he broke out into an amazing solo.
To bad you missed a great show. I was there both nights🙂
My buddies were in that crowd.
There's know one like Eddie Vanhalen🎉
Both Ed and Alex classical trained musicians 🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🥁
The violin effect is done controlling the volume nob turning it up and down while the other hand is pressing the note.
A few requests- VAN HALEN- 'Little Guitars'; CRY OF LOVE- 'Bad Thing'
Eddie had a guitar placed in Randy Rhodes casket when at his funeral.
Man I get a kick out of watching You Guys see these videos and the reaction as someone who got to grow up and these Bands Like Van Halen and Sammy Hagar I was a Huge Fan I was about 15 years old when we all heard Eddie Van Halen for first time Wow Unbelievable took the Guitar to a whole different planet and first time getting to see Van Halen they used to have at this football stadium down where The State Fair is and from 1978 till 1988 there were these Music Festivals called Texxas Jams and I got to go to 9 of them my first 1979 my friends and brothers and their friends we got our tickets $15.00 to see starting about 11 AM TKO, SammyHagar he got the 80 thousand of us up then Nazareth and Van Halen was next had just released 2nd album Boston was Awesome and then Heart was Great and we were trying to leave at almost 3 AM and Blue Oyster Cult was still playing but man I would Really Like to see Your Reactions to watching Sammy Hagar Live 1983 Checkerdome just even first song of concert he means Rock’n Roll We really got to see so many concerts Big Groups tickets were about 7 dollars from 77 to now I have seen almost 700 concerts and a lot were Van Halen and Sammy Hagar you Guys have alot of Fun I liked Your reactions to REO Speedwagon Roll with The Changes
Edward Van Halen - The King of Ten Fingers and Six Strings
check out Van Halen's song "One foot out the door" an absolutely incredible guitar solo that will knock your socks off
He's using the sound volume instead of a pic. He uses his left hand to up and down the neck and he's timing with his right hand turning his volume knob up and down.
And tons of delay.
Actually the guitar picks have the band and the player's names on them. I have at least a dozen... Kiss, Boston, Styx, Eagles. Eddie helped create the nut lock system that allow the deep wham Bar dives without taking the guitar out of tune.
@Views From The 502 - Great reaction. Another awesome guitar shredding video is Jeff Healey "See The Light". You won't be disappointed. I promise.
Rip to the master 🎸🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Eddie played at hie gain and distortion he controlled the humming of the single coil pickups with the volume knobs
Except he isn’t using a single coil pickup and only ever has in studio and that’s a rare occasion
You're thinking of a slide guitar which still uses picking but also a metal tube on the finger to slide across the neck.
Not to sound too freaky but I think Eddie s making love to his guitar
Some great Halloween tunes for you, Limbo by Rush, and two songs from Jimmy Buffett the desperation samba and vampires mummies and the holy Ghost
RIP Eddie
There are great guitarist.... there
Check out Sammy Hagers first group Montrose ~ Bad Motorscooter he wrote the song when he was 18

Who are you guys? Not knowing who he is and if his gear is custom🤯 Wow just Wow kidos🤪

He's in his early 30's
Sounds more like the vocals of a whale..
Does it sound more "gangsta" if you tell us your area code?
That's completely up to you
Little to long for a 13 min Solo meaning your video is 29 minutes!!!! Wow
