Van Halen is the band name. The 4 original members are Eddie Van Halen-guitar, Alex Van Halen-drums, Michael Anthony-Bass and David Lee Roth-vocals. This lineup existed from 78' until 84'. Roth left the band in 84' and Sammy Hagar became the bands lead vocalist from 85' till 96'. Since that time both Roth and Hagar rejoined in some capacity. Sadly Edward Van Halen left this world in 2020 at the too young age of 65. Eddie was both a guitar God as well as an innovator, creating his own instruments and playing styles.
Well… technically Van Halen is also the last name.
Eddie Sally passed from mouth and throat cancer. He blamed it on the guitar picks that he said he held in his mouth right where the cancer started. I believe the cigarettes might have more to do with it.

Eddie Van Halen not only mastered the guitar he changed the way other guitarists played. He was an innovative genius. RIP Eddie.
I always say Eddie made the biggest innovations for the Guitar with the Three T's. Touch, Tech and Tone.
Finger-tapping is HUGE especially with bands like Animals as Leaders and all that style.

I think we saw that once in a lifetime talent. I think the way the industry evolved so much into something unrecognizable, it will be almost impossible for the right environment to produce another E.V.H. We all were witness to some amazing times that produced some amazing people, and those times are gone.
Two hand tapping, pinched harmonics, tapped harmonics, natural harmonics, dive bombs, volume swells, tremolo picking, rhythm slashes, picking beyond the nut, etc.... all whilst fairly drunk. It's genius.
My understand is that "fairly drunk" is massively understanding Eddie's condition during this solo. "Accidentally has blood in his alcohol system" would be more accurate.
Besides all his out of this world technique, EvH indeed made his guitar sound like a chello, or as remote to a church organ as a guitar can be. He loved playing triads, both on keys as on strings and everyone can hear J.S. Bach's fuga structures in his double hand finger tapping technique. That even sounds a bit like a 'wohltemperiert klavier'. But everything was deeply rooted in the blues. Simply genius

When the first Van Halen album came out we all kinda sat there with our jaws in our laps and wondered "how"? Eddie's contribution to rock & roll can't be overstated. His innovative playing set the world on fire.

It's a curious thing that so many reactors stop to comment on the 'cello-sounding' section, and yet despite all of them watching him play, I have yet to ever see even one notice that during that section, he's not right hand strumming the strings; he's playing the volume knob in an inventive style that most major guitarists attribute to Jeff Beck. He fits it into this solo beautifully.
Pretty much everyone who heard the first album the first time can tell you where they were. I was at a garage party and everyone stopped whatever they were doing when Eruption played. Will never forget the look on people's faces.

I remember with complete clarity the first time listening to Van Halen, side 1 of their debut album and most notably, "Eruption"
It's one of only two times experiencing a song for the first time was permanently etched in my memory.
I was getting a ride from a good friend - a drummer and rock music aficionado who delighted in turning me on to new bands/songs. His van had a ridiculously high-end custom quad sound system with 16 speakers. It sounded unbelievable turned way up! 😁
That day my friend said, with a quizzical grin on his face, "I just bought this tape - it's a new band, "Van Halen" - they're not bad." He popped in the cassette and cranked it up. First song - "Running With the Devil" - those siren horns, the thumping guitar, the piano, then that now famous guitar riff - it was hard, different. It rocked and I loved it. After the song, he paused the tape and said -
"Now. Listen to THIS".
"Eruption" started, I closed my eyes, amazed at the intricacy, accuracy, speed and enormous talent. Undoubtedly I was listening to greatness.
I opened my eyes after the song ended, feeling both numb and elated. My friend was smiling - looking quite pleased with himself. "You should see your face", he said.😊

Eddie Van Halen was the guy who did the guitar solo for Michael Jackson’s song “Beat it”
FACT........& he recorded it on the 1st take in less than 15 minutes
He went further...he re-arranged, made the song better and MJ loved it. Perfection.
But he didn’t take a credit for it because he didn’t think the other guys in VH would approve. I guess playing on a “pop” record wasn’t on-brand or something. And he also did it for free!
For the record, although I grew into a hard rock and metal guy, I owned Thriller before I owned any VH. Did that riff on Beat It spark my love of screaming guitars? Maybe…
@@philproffitt8363 Steve Lukather says in a long interview that after MJ and Quincy Jones heard the solo, they realized that the song wasn't as good as the solo, so they gave the tape of the solo to him and told him to come up with something better. He recalls driving to studios in LA with the solo tape in a briefcase. He re-wrote Beat It. All of the guitar playing, except the solo, is his.

Eddie said he came home and found his brother Alex playing his drums. So he told Alex, if you're gonna play my drums, I'm gonna play your guitar. Alex then said, within a matter of minutes, Eddie played a piece of music that Alex had been practicing for hours on end. Eddie attributed it to his fingers being limber from playing piano. The rest is history.
As a child, Eddie wanted to be a drummer, and bought a drum set and paid for it delivering newspapers in the mornings. His brother Alex, played his drums while he was gone and got so good, his parents suggested Eddie play something different.
I never get tired of watching people react to this video, and your reaction was fabulous. RIP Eddie. The band was named after him and his brother Alex on drums.

When Eddie Van Halen died it was literally the first and only time I have cried over a celebrity death. I have been a Van Halen fan since the first time I heard them probably over 40 years ago. He's shredding string in heaven now.

I’ve seen them three times and it always makes me sad I’ll never see them again. I saw Sammy a couple of weeks ago and he played some Van Halen songs and the guitarist, obviously, was just not it. It’ll never be the same.

Eddie made sounds come out of the guitar, that was never meant to. That's his brilliance. Eddie's rymth and timing was unmatched. Everybody also says Eddie could shred with the best of them. But Eddie was much more than that. He created his own guitar and equipment. He changed the way the guitar was played. RIP Eddie we miss you.
The real Eruption is a short guitar solo off the first album which was really just his warm up routine. The producer was pretty blown away with it, no one had ever done stuff like this in the 70s, and wanted him to record it. This solo is part of that, parts of songs and other stuff he did during the solo break in concerts. This was recorded from live concerts over like three or four different nights which is why you’ll see a few odd things from editing multiple performances into one.
Eddie changed the way rock guitar was played. He is the G.O.A.T...greatest of all time! Period. The drummer is his older brother Alex . And yes the the band name is Van Halen. Loved your reaction. You definitely need to check out more of their material.

I bought this on VHS when it came out in 1986 and at this point I’ve realistically probably seen this guitar solo about a 1000 times. I get chills every single time! He was a genius on every level as a musician and songwriter. THIS is what pure, real talent is folks!
Same. Except for me I first watched it on Showtime (back when they aired cool stuff like this) then, I went out looking for the VHS of that show. 1000 times seems a bit modest. Maybe 100,000? For me anyway. That tape has been wore out since the 90's I have it on DVD now lol.

It is so fun to watch peoples facial expressions as there brain tries to process it all . Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend and KING of the hammer ons . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
Regarding the part where Eddie made his guitar sound like a cello, he did that by using his volume knob to "hide" the attack of the pick or the "hammer-on" done with his fingers. All instruments have what they call an "envelope" which consists of the attack, sustain and decay of an instrument's volume essentially. Normally a guitar's "attack" is very sudden and quick. By starting with the volume down and then quickly turning it up after the initial attack, it mimics the bowed sound of a cello. If you watch that part of the solo, his hand never leaves the volume knob.

Eruption is on Van Halens first album, and it's only about 3 minutes long, so you'll appreciate just how much he had to work to drag this version out to over 15 mins long, and every second was entertaining! Legend! RIP Edward you genius.

I never heard of him breaking any guitars, he played mostly the same guitars. Yes, a lifetime of practicing music. His brother is the drummer, their dad was a musician . He's the greatest of his time.
This song appears on there first album as kinda an intro to the song “You really got Me” or that’s what we thought when it came out Eddie literally changed the way guitarist play & was a huge influence on countless guitar players.
Eddie was a master. He came to the United States from the Netherlands, barely knew English and music became his language. He was classically trained and played piano first. When he couldn't afford a new guitar, he built one from pieces and continued to make custom guitars and his own sound. He always wore that amazing grin. A piece of my childhood in the early 80's. I cried when he died.

Hi, born in 1970 I was a teenager when I first heard Eruption. So, I’m qualified to say : Any time you ask “how?” The answer is “Because he’s Eddie Van Han Halen” just leave it at that.
So many of us cried when he died. Rest in peace, Eddie 😢
Eddie was always trying to get better. Alice Cooper tells the story about how Eddie asked him to arrange guitar lessons with Glen Campbell. Alice and Glen Campbell were best friends, neighbors, golfing buddy:s. So he arranged the lessons. Eddie like all great artists always learning.
Eddie played the guitarsolo in MIchael Jackson's Beat It. The Van Halen family migrated from the Netherlands to Pasadena USA. Jan van Halen was a Jazz musician. Eddie started playing drums and Alex his brother guitar. Later they swapped. Van Halen is the last name of Eddie and Alex but is also the name of the band that would change rock forever. Van Halen inspired more than one generation (guitarplayers) to play rock n roll music. Eddie passed away in 2020. Van Halen has had different singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar are the most well known. Eddie uses different parts of songs for this guitarsolo. The first part is 3:16 the birthdate of his son Wolfgang. There is a part you described as a chello like sound. This is a song called Cathedral. He also uses the beginning of Mean Street of the Fair Warning album. He's an innovator of music but also for the instrument itself. He was constantly trying things. Always had guitarparts, and screwdrivers around to modify. His legacy is that he is one of the greats! He was also known for his smile. This story is not complete.... please correct if the story is what different. Oh yeah he could play the piano too. That's where he learned a lot of the theory I guess.
But he couldn't read music. Eddie was so adept at building his own guitars that Les Paul once said that only he, Leo Fender, and Eddie really knew how to make an electric guitar.

Edward Lodejwik Van Halen. Cofounder of the rock band Van Halen, his brother Alex is the drummer. Both are Dutch Indonesian, classically trained musicians. Eddie is known as one of the greatest rock guitarists in the history of modern music, because of his classical background, and inspiring dual tapping techniques on the neck of the guitar. He built his own guitar from parts from others, known as the iconic Frankenstrat.
Sadly, he passed away from cancer in 2020 at only 65, yet his influence is still felt today, with his only child Wolfgang paving his way in rock music. Check out Van Halen's music Libra Britt, you'd be surprised and amazed at their music. Their 1978 self titled debut is considered one of the greatest albums of all time.
Great reaction -- genuine reaction. The looks on your face is similar to everyone who hears Eddie Van Halen play for the 1st time. Legendary Ted Nugent said he would just stand and watch Eddie play, when Van Halen came out. Ozzy Osbourne & Black Label Society guitarist Zakk Wylde said when hearing Eruption and the 1st Van Halen album in 1978, that no one could what they were hearing. They couldn't figure out what he was doing.

Eddie is on a level of his own. His influence is unmeasurable. One of the top 5 guitarists to ever live. Seen him twice in concert and both times mind blowing. He would do the long solo every night but from videos I've seen there would be slight differences.
I fully agree- out of curiosity, who are the other 4 on your top 5 list? I’d have to go with SRV, Healy, Hendrix, & Knopfler- at least that’s today’s list. The only thing that always remains the same on my list is #1 belongs to SRV

@@MetalMcfly Angus Young is why I picked up the guitar. If there is a list of the greatest "riff" masters he would dominate that list. About 5 years ago I took a deep dive into Terry Kath and his way-too-short career after hearing he was Hendrix's favorite guitarist. Dude was fire.
@@farfromperfek Terry Kath was so underrated. 25 or 6 to 4 will forever be my favorite Chicago song and it's a shame Terry died so young. As far as Angus goes, I couldn't agree more. I listen to a 3 1/2 hr long greatest hits video from AC/DC every single day and have been for the last 2 weeks. Absolute monster of a guitar player.
Eddie was originally the drummer , he and his bother switched instruments. Eddie was also the main person to rock out the song "beat it" (by MJ) and also play in it . He tried to keep it a secret. He didn't want his band to know. So much so that he didn't get the credit or even make a penny on it. But Van Halen was big and the song also became big. Everyone eventually could recognize his style of play and the world knew it was Eddie.
He was a drummer as a kid, never for a band, let alone VH.
There are those with acquired talent enhanced with practice, then there are those who are gifted. Eddie was gifted, and the difference is an unmistakable... So pleasing to see/watch someone else appreciate it... Love the reaction... Thank you!

Yes, Eddie inspired millions….and changed the way people view and play guitar…often imitated, never duplicated….he was special and unique!
I saw Van Halen live 3 times and it wasn’t enough!
And he had a solo something like that in every show.
Here is something to take notice .. he played this solo after a long set of Rockin' with the band. Eddie was a very, very, very special talent. Many current guitarists found their passion because of Eddie Van Halen , and the rest of the band. 💚
He also went straight into the next song without a break.

VAN HALEN 1 is in my opinion the GREATEST debut album ever, i was 13 when it came out, and have been listening to it over and over thru the 45 years since, it opens with an epic guitar jam, that would have JIMI HENDRIX fist pumping, EDDIE you ROCKED R.I.P. LEGEND

Before they were famous I witnessed The Mighty Van Halen in 1976 when i was a kid , in Pasadena backyards and later on the Sunset strip...I saw Every tour starting in 1978 , then 79, 80, 81, 82 , 1983 US Festival, 84, ...I learned to play guitar and i had a successful career in the music industry because of my immediate and absolute obsession with the music of Van Halen,and then others. Edward Van Halen was my idol as a teenager. i am glad to see you smile as the Magic of Van Halen hits you! Van Halen is one of the most successful , Greatest Rock Bands in history. Your next video ,in my opinion, is their BEST video. Van Halen at their peak , with Original singer David Lee Roth going full throttle, will blow your mind : " Van Halen Unchained Live Oakland 1981" Cheers !!

I've seen Van Halen at least a dozen times... and he goes through all of the solos from many different songs... and that is every concert.
Van Halen is the name of the band, and it includes Eddie Van Halen on guitar and his brother Alex Van Halen on drums.
One of the greatest of all time. Rest in peace buddy. This solo actually goes all the way back to their very first album in 1978, which is one of the greatest debuts in rock history, along with Boston's first album and Led Zeppelin's first album.
On the record this solo is only about 2 or 3 minutes long and it leads into their fantastic cover of the song by The Kinks, Girl You Really Got Me now. It just bleeds right into it and they were often played together on the radio.
But in concert he will do this long extended thing and it's right in the middle of a show, right when it cuts off they go immediately into the next song and start rocking out. It's always different but it contains always the elements from the original guitar solo, which you could hear the crowd roar whenever he went through one of those as they recognized it, and then he does all kinds of stuff that he does in various songs of theirs, so you can just see how formidable he is and yet he turns the whole thing into a performance unto itself.
I was lucky enough to see them in the late 70s and early 80s when they were really young and their shows were just absolutely crazy, with David Lee Roth as the frontman.
The first time I ever saw them was in 1978 at a small venue in Wichita that held maybe three thousand people, it was small and cramped and hot in the middle of the summer around the 4th of July, and we were all packed in there and screaming and back then you could sneak booze in and people would get high, and the band would smoke and openly drink whiskey on the stage during the performance.
And it wasn't uncommon to throw things around at shows like that, but in this case in this small venue, people were even shooting off bottle rockets. About the time somebody shot a Roman Candle down onto the stage David Lee Roth challenged whoever did it and I won't repeat the language he used, to please kindly come down to the stage to personally get his ass kicked If he did it again. And indeed, the guy did not do it again, lol. Apparently bottle rockets are okay inside, but not Roman Candles, laugh.
They really did change rock in a lot of ways, and, as you say, Eddie inspired generations of guitarists and musicians in general.
I absolutely love how he turned it into a cello or almost a string quartet.

Van Halen officially began as 'Mammoth' in 1972, and renamed the band to Van Halen (after brothers Alex and Eddie) in 1973. The Eruption guitar solo was filmed in May 1992, so Eddie had been playing guitar professionally for 20 years at this point. Eddie started playing piano around 1964, but a few years later he caught the 'guitar bug' - and ultimately reshaped rock guitar sounds with his homemade guitars.

Eddie Van Halen was my favorite guitarist ever since the mid 70s. What a virtuoso. He was a big influence in my learning to play guitar and also in the style of my playing. So glad to see you appreciate the man's skill and passion. Another great guitarist is Steve Vai. Check out his song Tender Surrender. It's only about 5 minutes long. No vocals. But I dare say it will be a PDC addition. The version I speak of is quite popular. It's got tens of MILLIONS of views. It's a live performance, and it's very good. If you want to do a song that you'll enjoy, give it a listen. He won't disappoint. Peace!

Eddie would play this solo nightly on tour. The core elements of the solo seemed to be there every time, but EVH would improvise around those core elements. He was PHENOMENAL!

Eddie was and still is an inspiration to many around this world. His son Wolf is also amazingly talented and can perform pretty much everything his dad, uncle, and Michael could do, yes all the instruments. Wolf's tribute to his father is a very nice good bye.

I grew up with these guys in socal. Eddie is three years older than me and I saw them play before they ever got a record contract and ever opened for anyone. I was sold, hook line and sinker! Eddie was the best Rock and Roll guitar player ever. Period. RIP Eddie. They'll never be another.
Best story... Both Van Halen Bros were brought up in classical music, playing the piano. As teens, Alex got a guitar from his parents. Eddie decided he wanted a drum set.
When Eddie got home one day, he heard his brother Alex playing his drums. At first he got mad, then he realized Alex was much better than him... so he went and picked up Alex's guitar, and decided he'd learn how to play it, instead.
Cool story number 2. While Eddie was taking piano lessons as a kid, he never learned to read sheet music. He just memorized the song from hearing his instructor play it. In the present, guitar sheet music looks different, because they had to figure out a way to show what Eddie was doing. He went from not being able to read sheet music, to having a new version of sheet music created because of him.
Ditto to what everybody else said. He is well known for popularizing the tapping guitar technique which allows for rapid arpeggies to be played with 2 hands on the fretboard. He has a son, Wolfgang, with Valerie bertinelli. She was on hot and Cincinnati. He was classically trained and listened to a lot of Mozart and Bach. Wolfie, As he is affectionately known , started playing with van Halen around 2004 And in 2006 replaced Michael Anthony as van Halen's bassist. So glad you reacted to this. Best ever lead guitar imo…. some others are very close, but Eddie takes the top honors! I’ve seen that solo 6 times in concert….and it has evolved over time….every time getting better and better!

When he died the world shook, there are Murals all over the world. Van Halen is one of the most famous and beloved bands in Rock N roll history.
I grew up in LA-Ca in the 70s and 80s and we were blessed to have him and Randy Rhoads.
When He died, I could not stop crying, plus it broke my heart Because I went to school with two of their cousins and they were devastated.
You can type in eddie van halen documentary/biography and tributes and watch for ever. Within 24 hours after he died thousands of celebrities and Guitarist made tribute videos.
His son Wolf Gang Van Halen is also amazing and plays several instruments, sings and writes. His band is called Mammoth.

I got to see EVH ( R.I.P.) twice. The first on the Fair Warning tour then the 1984 tour. He LOVED performing for the fans. you could see it, hear it & smell it. That man is sorely missed. If you want to see what EVH was all about, watch the EVH visits Jason Becker video. Gets me every time.

Eruption is only a small part of the live guitar solo. He used other solos and instrumental pieces as a framework he would put together. it would evolve and change over the course of his career but songs like Cathedral, Spanish Fly, and the intro to Mean Streets would always be a part of it.
Yes, exactly. Interestingly, he played the Cathedral section for years before recording it in the studio.

This is from a concert called Live Without a Net from New Haven Connecticut. What people who react to just this performance don't see is how good the rest of the band is. Sammy is almost as good a guitar player as Eddie and all of the members of Van Halen (including Gary Cherone) are legends in their own right.

I highly recommend searching for Tina S Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". At the time of that video she was 15, I believe.
I had a friend in H.S. who when he was 15 learned this by ear. Granted, he couldn't play it anything like Mr. Van Halen, but he learned it and could play it. I was stunned.
Yes ma'am. That was church. I saw him live and I left that concert grinning from ear to ear. I feel so grateful and honored that I got to attend the church of Eddie Van Halen before he passed away. He was all that and more.

Eddie had a crazy obsession with the guitar. It was almost like a comfort blanket for him. He has even said he felt anxious when he didn't have a guitar in his hands. When you see old interviews with him he almost always had a guitar in his hands and he would be playing around on it while he was talking to the interviewer.
This video is a compilation of two nights. Even during the middle of some songs you can tell there was an edit just by the clothes Sammy is wearing. It is a masterful job of editing.
There will never be another Eddie Van Halen, simply the greatest of all times. RIP Eddie your in haven now with the other guitar greats. Gone too soon but never forgotten.
His guitar playing and the way he reinvented "tapping" required a new way of writing music.

Britt...Eddie Van Halen played the solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It".
As you can see, Eddie learned to how to play the ENTIRE guitar to get sounds, not just the fretboard.
In addition to being a guitar god, Eddie was also a great keyboardist.
