@@Pilot2315 Yes, I mean I drive in the city so there is not a lot I can do with the power. The only regret I have is not getting the GTS boxster. And they keep going up in value.
As a 987 Cayman owner, my eyes are welling up. This is terrible news for an enthusiast. You cannot replace the sound of a Porsche flat-6. Never mind the speed or acceleration. It's not about that. Not to mention the fact that electric cars will never be *environmentally friendly* until we will have learned to produce electricity in a more sustainable manner. And what about the issue of disposing the batteries once they are exhausted...
EV batteries last 15-20 years in a car, then another 20-25 years as energy storage, then get recycled for 99%.... How much gasoline or diesel can you recycle? None. More solar, wind and maybe nuclear electricity is a good thing. Do you know how much energy it requires to produce fuel? EVs are just better in everyway compared to ICE environmentally speaking. -automotive engineer-
Obviously not every EV owners can do that, but a few I know including myself charge at home using solar. Also, have a look at Volvo’s report that estimated even with dirty coal, the break even point of an EV’s emissions over an equivalent ICEV would be around 75,000 miles. We need to be better at recycling the batteries, but market economics would do that given how valuable the materials are.
You can keep your cayman, i get enthusiast never want anything to change until they experience something better. but you have to remember that cars are tech too just like our phones every year they will strive to improve. Dont blame car manufacturers for wanting to improve and look to the future. Also we need to remember as car enthusiasts that we are less than 5% of their market. Even if we stop buying their cars the other 95% of normal people will still buy them and they will still be profitable.
As a 986 Boxster and Tesla M3 owner living in a country where the majority of electricity is generated from renewable sources I couldn't disagree with you more. 1. The sound of a performance ICE has evolved as performance has improved so for many people the sound has actually replaced the performance as the indicator of performance rather than the actual performance. I enjoy the acceleration of my Tesla over my Boxster because it performs better in that respect. The sound is a secondary and unimportant, to me, side effect of the performance. Not saying I don't enjoy the flat 6 but it's not the reason I choose a car. 2. Take a look at the oil industry and how unfriendly it is to the environment just getting the oil out. Now add all the tons of CO2 and other pollutants produced by burning that oil as petrol or diesel and now add the waste produced by the need for relatively frequent servicing of ICE vehicles. Research has shown that even when EVs are charged on 100% fossil fuel grids they produce 60% of the environmental impact of ICE vehicles. And as for batteries, they are nearly 100% recyclable.
@@jadamsnz No matter how much sense we make people wont let go of the ways they are used to. But don't worry as you can see an increasing number of auto manufactures are ditching ICE More and more EV's are on the road. but IMO this is a good thing. eventually only people that actually enjoy driving will still be driving ICE cars which will mean safer roads when majority of normal people will be on autopilot. MARK MY WORDS soon there will be an Autopilot lane on major highways.
Having previously owned both a Boxster and a Cayman, I’d go for the Cayman - even though your idea of what the EV Boxster would look like is gorgeous. For me, there’s a narrow window where driving an convertible with the top down is truly comfortable. When it’s cold, roof up and heaters on. When it’s VERY hot, roof up and air con on. When it’s wet, roof up, on a motorway at high speed, roof up and when it’s parked, roof up.
I think you should make completely different EVs with diffrent name as I don't think you can take one car's brand image into electric realm with same feeling
Indeed, EV is already the present. And if you did not hear the train coming...you are already killed from the train. Main OEMs will stop developing and building ICEs within the next decade completely. And brands like jaguar stopped developed of any ICE car immediately, since the are too small to develop both chains.
The Cayman's design hasn't exactly changed much over the years. If anything, it'll probably look very similar to the current gen with a few changes to the rear to bring it in line with other models. I don't think the change will be as drastic as what was shown here.
This is by far the best european youtube channel for cars enthusiasts, although I just can't get exited without the exhaust notes of internal combustion engines.... it's going to be a painful switch. Thanks a lot, saludos desde Colombia (SA)!

I'm actually excited for this, but I really hope they still offer the gas models too. We need more examples of amazing electric sports cars so we can feel comfortable of what new enthusiast cars look like. I'm really interested in what the next gen Miata will be
The thing is...half of the sports car experience comes from the sound of the engine, anyone who tested a tesla can agree that it might accelerate quickly, but it has 0 feeling to it. It's crap even before we arrived at the sub-par breaks and suspension. I wish these manufacturers started focusing on i3-like decent and affordable EVs.
there is a big problem with electric cars atm.. which is why you cannot make them sport cars; yes, going slowly on autobahns/-routes/highways help electric cars have almost a decent range.. almost.. but, even on a highway, if you drive with 90 or 95, it is bye-bye battery in 120 miles at the most. Now, do Porsche thinks ppl are going to buy a Cayman and drive it as slowly as possible or as fast as possible?, and if I drive it as fast as possible what happens with the range?, because having a range of 60-to100 miles doesn't look that appealing...especially in a car designed to be enjoyed. If their plan is to make every client of a cayman/boxter/maccan drive as slow as the taycan drivers, then excellent, all Porsche electric car's clients will have very posh city/commuting cars. if their plan is to head out in the alps in June or October and enjoy some driving.. then, good luck to them!
@@eugenux 90-95 mph, or around 150 km/h is illegal in most countries. 120 km/h or 75 mph is more realistic, and a 60 kWh Model 3 does 180 miles or 290 km at that speed, in winter conditions. Next gen Cayman should perform similarly.

Great video! The only thing I disagree with is the 3d printed gearbox case. 3d printing isn’t yet economical. They may 3d print sand casting molds though and cast the case out of aluminum. Binder jet printing for casting molds gets rid of a lot of the problems with metal printing.
Well it depends on the application. I agree that for the production volume of the more affordable Porsche models, casting the gearbox is likely the more cost-effective solution. But for the prototype car, 3D printing is basically a no brainer for manufacturing. Considering that BMW were the first to use carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis of the i3, I would not be surprised to see Porsche or some other German manufacturers to be the first to impliment metal 3D printed parts in mass production.
3D printing can do internal stuctures which molds can't. So it depends on if the improved weight and rigidity of 3D printed part can outweight it's higher price.
@@BlkRider you can’t just look at price. You have to look at production volume and build time, which dictates number of machines needed and then floor space for the machines. I can pretty much guarantee you that the numbers don’t add up for full rate production of the 3d printed metal parts for automotive yet. Also, a 3d printed mold can do any of the internal structures you would have in a 3d printed part, unless their size is too small, or it’s just a large void that isn’t connected to anything and only there to eliminate weight and material, but then you wouldn’t be able to get the metal powder from 3d printing it out anyway. (Ps. I’m an aerospace mfg engineer for additive and subtractive processes with lasers)
@@jlehm I totally agree with you and on the price front just for perspective, I recently had the chance to check out a few metal 3d printers and came to learn that prices for those things start at a bit under a million euros per machine and go up into the multi millions, when adding that to the fact that the printing takes hours per part and extensive afterwork is needed to get any sort of quallity components you get to see that metal 3d printing simply doesn't work for mass produktion.
Its so funny to me that people say "they cannot be fun to drive beacuse they are heavy and only good in the straight line". Isnt that what we used to say about muscle cars? Let the ev evolve a lil bit and they gon be so much fun
Muscle cars are still a joke on any UK B-road. Go race a near 2 decade old RX8 or s2000 with your V8 muscle car around any bend son and let us know how you get on. Cheers.
Porsche is a sports car, not a muscle car... Also they struggled to sell the more practical and stronger (more torque) lighter Cayman 4 cylinder turbo because it was not 6 cylinder boxer and lacked the sound of the 6 cylinder. And now Porsche has gone totally insane and try push all electric on a audience that do not even want Turbo 4 cylinder because of how they sound.... As I say, Go Woke, Go Broke !!!! Porsche will regret it...
Nothing. I don't really care about you, your crap car and your opinion. But you will have to embrace EV's or assume the consequences, that's all I'm saying
The Macan being electric I understand, since it's just an everyday car made by Porsche to ensure continuous sales. The Cayman/Boxter I do NOT. They are sports cars, they're not even that fast and they are not supposed to, they're made and bought for the experience of driving and anyway sell so little compared to the SUV's that Porsche wouldn't have to pay this big of a fine to the EU. It's just sad seeing the whole automotive industry change to sell better in China where you can drive an electric car whenever you want but gasoline ones certain days a week....
Well since we're talking about affordability: I want to know what the resellability and 2nd hand market would look like for EV ownership vs ICE now that there are quite a few EVs buzzing around. EVs have a nasty way of being antiquated immediately after the next version comes out and as such all the value drops too... well prior to this crazy covid inflation. @carwow lets see an episode on that :)
Yeah Teslas hold up their values well, but they also have good thermal and voltage management of the batteries so they don't degrade. They are also pretty fast, sporty, and cool. Compare that to a Nissan Leaf, which is not withstanding is fairly boring compact car, but also has poor thermal management, leading to fairly rapid degradation of the battery. They don't have much re-sale value, because they become pretty useless fairly quickly. A good condition used 40kWh Leaf battery costs at least $9,000 to install, hardly worth it for a car that is essentially a Ford Fiesta.
I entirely agree with you about convertibles. I've had convertibles for my last four cars. Although I've had some nice cars (like an M3 convertible) the Boxster I once owned is the best car I've ever owned - and I regret selling it. My current MX-5 is fun, but a Boxster EV? Yes!
I'm really excited that there's going to be a proper 2 seater rwd electric sports car... that being said, I really hope it's an option and not the only cayman unless they intend to be the world's first manual ev because the boxster/cayman just should be manual
I mean, if the car will be purely electric, then obviously there won't be a manual gearbox. The most we can expect in terms of gears is an automatic two-speed setup, if even that. That's the thing about electric cars; they don't need gears.
About the smaller brakes because of regen braking: regen only works on 'less than full' batteries, so it may get scary for a few minutes when your brakes are less effective while regen's disabled.
To protect the batteries, you're never allowed to 'fully' charge them, so I think the car will use some of that buffer for regen. I can't imagine they would allow non-safe tech in a Porsche.
My prediction is that we will see hydrogen powered race cars instead, but only time will tell. If they are gonna use ev's, this is when the one hour long ad break will take place...
FIA is pushing a GT3 class for electric race cars. Right now they're talking about 700kW charging speed and solid state batteries. They can handle such charging speeds, are even in the current stage already cheap and have a way bigger energy density, but have a poor life span of just 100 charging cycles, which is the main reason we don't see them in normal EVs for now.
OMG I'm dying 😂 at the "comments" 08:49 the editors came up with on the fake comments section from Porsche UK and Nissan. "Matt vs Yianni Foot Race" and "Nissan" being super-boastful about their Skyline. And the now-obligatory "First" from carwow themselves 😄 80% of the reasons I love this channel and watch its videos is because of the juvenile humor from both Mat and his editorial team. Mat and Jason Camissa are the two wittiest and most lovable goofballs on the car scene. I'd much rather watch these guys than Top Gear or The Grand Tour.
Blimey at this rate I'll soon be losing interest in cars altogether, maybe I'll just have to think of them like I do smartphones as a gadget that's useful occasionally!
That super expensive prototype weighs 1.5 ton? Imagine one that needs more budget-friendly components, sound dampening, a decent sized battery, infotainment, speakers, normal seats, etc. We're lucky if the lightest version is anything near 1.7 ton, "only" 400kg heavier!
It's dual motor and dual gear box though. Which the customer Cayman will only have 1 of each. I think the end weight will be 1550kg. Not great but good enough to be agile due to mass distribution.
@@Neojhun electric motor and gearbox is 70-80 kg max.....it will atleast be 1600 kg (only 250 kg inc. compared to the ongoing) if it will have any decent range ,so this is a failed idea from the start and no one will buy it !
@@khaledali-di9mt WTF you have no clue what you are talking about. The battery tech on the Mission R is nothing special and outdated. Porsche never claimed nor had the goal making the Mission R battery advance energy dense. By the time Cayman BEV comes out the battery structure packaging will be a good bit lighter easily 50kg lighter with slightly more range. A 1550kg Cayman with BEVs mass share distribution advantages will be just as fun and agile. TOTAL WEIGHT does not dictate the agility of the platform. Mass Distribution and the physics that effects it heavily influences that feel.
I’ve been wishing they would bring back a modernized EV version of the 914 - call it the 914E. Keep it simple (1 rear motor), lightweight and reasonably priced at least by Porsche standards. Bet they would sell a bunch. 😎
I would be soooooo in on this design. I love my 981 BB, it’s paid for still feels new (even though it’s 6 years old) and plan on keeping it until one of these bad boys come out.
@@aditya5474 Yes, but the weight penalty of having two propulsion systems is going to make one very heavy Cayman. Not to mention trying to fit it all into a relatively small package.
I doubt the so called “electric Cayman/Boxster” will retain those names. Porsche will want a new name for the roadster and coupe. I’m not particularly worried, cause if any company knows what “proper car lovers” really like in their car, it’s Porsche. They’re not gonna disappoint. After all, the Taycan is literally outselling *almost* everything else in their range. How much of that is down to company car benefits, I don’t know, but they’re getting something right and the Taycan is looked upon very favourably by the enthusiasts I speak to.
As a daily driver, I would not mind one day owning an EV. But for a proper sports car, I have exactly zero interest in an electric Boxster or Cayman. I’ll happily keep my 981 Boxster S with manual transmission and watch the price skyrocket once Porsche stops building ICE Caymans and Boxsters.
I've heard that this kind of location of batteries, after (not even serious) accident causes the car basically impossible to fix at reasonable cost and it would rather go junkyard
I thought that was the case with the skateboard designs and this layout would make repairs more like repairing an ICE car i.e. if it becomes irreparable it would've been irreparable anyway
EV cayman for me, its hot and rainy here, very little point in taking off the roof. Id just roll down the windows. There's also an issue with security.
For an EV, its nearly impossible to get both of them at the same time (look up BMW i3, full-carbon fiber EV that costs nearly $50k USD and its not even a sports car)
Hi Matt. Fancied a convertible for the wife, so got a Fiat500e Cabriolet on order. I know it is not a sports car, but should be fun. Have you reviewed that yet ?
So the lightweight cayman is now going to be a 2 tonne boat with a range of 200 miles. With batteries, there is no way they can get the weight to 1.5 tonnes and do 300 miles within the price range of a cayman.
I drove Boxsters for the past 10 years before getting my Tesla. The only thing I miss is putting my roof down. Therefore an EV Boxster would be perfect for me!
you drove your boxter slow and for very little distance.. presumably.. because, doing 100 mph for more than 1 mile will discharge the battery in "10 seconds or so".
I wonder how many of the people commenting who say they aren’t a fan of EV’s have driven a Taycan. I’ve driven two and they are both, even in 4S trim, my favorite car.
Maybe have two swappable batteries. One for daily driving with 250 mile range. Second for track that is high discharge that is good for 50 miles that’s 1/4 the weight.
Half of the exciting experience with sports and supercars is the (high revving) engine sounds, shifting gears, heel and toe etc. The future is cold and soulless.. 😒 with a land full of aweful horizon polluting windmills, solarfields and suburbs filled to the brim with charging stations. And around that time, electricity bills are probable the price of gas these days… one of the biggest so called “green” scams ever imo! 🤔 And after about 10+ years its a total loss cause of the battery’s had its best time. Take the tesla of Hoovie for example... And why does nobody mention the amount of dirty toxic mines in 3rd world country’s where all this lithium is mined with heavy on fossil fueled machinery, and in many cases involving childlabour and exploitation of the local people.. and poisoning the lands. And dont forget the producing and shipping of those battery’s with tons of Co2 emission! 🤨 All that so we in the west are so called; “green, durable, progressive, CO2 neutral, inclusive, diverse, jobcreating” or what ever totally raped frame and empty worded socialistic utopian dream they shove it in theys days. Electric cars are a silicon valley gimmick and are NOT the way forward! Its just simply shifting the money. And the automotive sector lobbied BIG-TIME in it cause electric vehicles are much much more expensive than normal cars. So also they jumped on the “green and durable” bandwagon like so many other big companies. Once again, Its all about the money... please do your research! 😏
yep Boxter. the soft top experience just adds another layer to road driving any time of the year. the Cayman looks better though. hope that motor has a few gears to play with plus a good sound.
There's no way for the Cayman to be electric and light/tossable as it currently is. The technology just doesn't exist. Your choices are a light battery pack with very limited range or a heavy battery pack with a longer range (but still dismal).

When it’s wet, roof up, on a motorway at high speed, roof up and when it’s parked, roof up.

@@Tomzuki. i appreciate that Cayman love to drove this car.

They are sports cars, they're not even that fast and they are not supposed to, they're made and bought for the experience of driving and anyway sell so little compared to the SUV's that Porsche wouldn't have to pay this big of a fine to the EU.

I'd rather have an old rs car over any ev, at least i'd have an actual engine
God bless modern automotive
Well since we're talking about affordability: I want to know what the resellability and 2nd hand market would look like for EV ownership vs ICE now that there are quite a few EVs buzzing around. EVs have a nasty way of being antiquated immediately after the next version comes out and as such all the value drops too... well prior to this crazy covid inflation. @carwow lets see an episode on that :)
Unless you’re Tesla; those things never drop below $30k, and it’s absolutely ludicrous

@@backyardengineering816 of course. Everyone should get to enjoy these cars, I just really don't want the manual to die when I just learned :(

About the smaller brakes because of regen braking: regen only works on 'less than full' batteries, so it may get scary for a few minutes when your brakes are less effective while regen's disabled.
Thanks for your smart advice 👍
Like Porsche engineers really need it... 🙄
To protect the batteries, you're never allowed to 'fully' charge them, so I think the car will use some of that buffer for regen. I can't imagine they would allow non-safe tech in a Porsche.
The next 24h Nürburgring with EVs will be exciting. Two rounds and then an hour to charge.
