I am a Porsche enthusiast through and through. I own a 991.1 Carrera S. I cannot see me ever purchasing a new EV even if it's a Porsche. As a car enthusiast it is very sad to see the state of cars now. They have regressed back to basic transportation. I know there is a way to keep the ICE engines around and more efficient. The Porsche engineers have already created alternative fuels but the oil companies will not let that into mass adoption because of profits. Long live the Flat 6!!

I drove both 911 and 718 and I love them both but I prefer the 718. Current owner of a boxster s. I’m a typical Porsche customer. I went to my Porsche dealer 1 month ago to upgrade to gts 4, answer: we don’t build them anymore. The dealer was crying that he has not cars to sell. I’ll never buy a boxster EV, if doesn’t make sense to spend 100k on batteries. I’d rather buy a Chinese EV for moving around and a used gts 4 for weekends. I don’t think they have fully understood they are driving full speed against a wall.

Interestingly enough, the fastest Porsche ever made is an EV.
If Porsche wants to survive this technological revolution, the last thing they need to do is listen to the luddite crowd that's set in their ways and can't see past their own ego.
And yes, I used to own a Boxster S (now a Model S). I still remember people whinning and complaining when it made the bold move to sell SUVs + 4D Sedans, which saved the company.

Porsche typically underestimates and overperforms. There are nearly 5 year old Taycans with >90% battery life remaining. I'm not old school but love my 2022 Taycan and while I paid only for the base battery, it approximates 230 miles range, 80% charged (280 miles/100%). My daily commute is 20 miles. Lucky, Im one of the minority that always charge in my garage. Unfort, EV infrastructure and auto emissions aren't getting any better in the US in the next 4 years.

Well it’s not Porsches decision to make - you’re implying Porsche is voluntarily electrifying its range I.E. ignoring that for its largest market (western Europe) it has to build around 25% of its production as pure EV by law.
As EVs aren’t selling and manufacturers are having to swallow huge losses in crazy cheap lease deals in order to shift them, they logically want to electrify the models that they made the lowest profit margin on anyway. With ICE Boxsters and Caymans build- cost being around 90% of a 911’s but then only retailing at 70% of the price, it makes sense to electrify that model.
Porsche won’t be too worried about actual sales numbers to begin with, in order to meet legislation they just need to build and register one for every three 911s they can sell to balance the books.

Jay, I think you are right on with both the weight and battery cost. The Boxster is probably the most "tossable" attainable sportscar on the road. Add 500 or more pounds and not so much. Then, ignoring anything but the 911 and Boxster, enthusiest owners want to keep their Porsche on the road forever. Owning a fully depreciated Boxster with the battery gone bad after 10 or 15 years and replacements having the "Porsche tax" applied just won't fly. Look at the Taycan depreciating by half in just 3 or 4 years. Who will want one at all after 10 years. To keep a Boxster EV viable in the long run Porsche should offer a VERY reasonably priced replacement battery exchange, something

First of all, thx for good content on the Porsche line-up. Then to the case of the to-be Boxster/Cayman models. There is really no point trying to argue against the EV case. It is just a case of necessity (even for Porsche). We need something else than what we currently have, which to be frank - is something that have been diluted by environmental requirements for most of the 2000s - but really getting pushed since the EU6 directive came (which hit Porsches' 991 and 981 line-up). You can always close your eyes thinking that those products didn't suffer any major issues from the EU6 requirements, but you'd be wrong. We are seeing issues with these motors now that they have accumulated miles (piston blow-by leading to bore score, carbon build-up, excessive oil consumption+++). I have a 981 GTS myself that has seen its share of issues. I really can't see that the new 992.2 3.6 or 3.0 motors have fixed the core issues either (how do you fix carbon build up in a DPI motor without making it heavier, more complex or more costly - or all of these?).
Then to the EV argument, I think your train of thought is basically good - but in my records misses out one important factor. The case of ongoing R&D. We know that Porsche is one of the majority owners in one of the most promising SolidState battery companies in the US, Quantumscape - which will deliver its production version ready samples next year. These batteries will give the manufacturers much more freedom in the set-up of the car once it has an EV architecture. An as-is set-up of 400 miles can get 600+ miles with the same weight, or similar range with a lot less weight, 10-80% charge in around 12 minutes, less cold weather degradation and a lot less overall mileage degradation - in addition to push much more amps over longer time than current Li Ion versions . These SolidState batteries are also cheaper to produce - as they are anode less (yes, think a bit on that one). This is not hear-say. These batteries are coming soon! As Quantumscape says; The future is Solid!

Thank you! I now drive 2016 Tesla ModelS, but my previous was a 2013 Boxster, which I loved like no other. Notes: Battery deterioration: I haven't noticed any. In the US, the Boxster EV can use Tesla chargers. Range is only an issue on really long trips, However.... One day, after 2 years with the Tesla, I went to a Porsche dealer and drove the 4 cylinder Boxster. It felt like driving a horse and buggy. The irritating noise of the 4-- why did they do that, no better mileage--and having to rev to get any power, turned my head around. The Tesla is so fast, instant power.. The only place the boxster--which would have to be a hybrid or a 6 cylinder---would be superior would be on that curvy mountain road with the top down. That ecstasy does not exist with the added weight of the Tesla. I didn't even like the Z4 because it weighed too much. So... can they keep the weight down? The superior power of the electric motor can make it feel lighter than it is--drive a stripped Tesla Model 3 and it will surprise you, especially in a mostly straight line-- but the instant handling when turning, that will be hard to duplicate. I hope they solve it. I believe in climate change, can't stand the idea of burning gas. But if the new EF isn't fun, I may buy a used 2014 Boxter.

Even if they one day manage to make batteries light (and they absolutely will), there is one fundamental difference between a combustion engine and an electric motor that can´t be overcome: One has a heartbeat and even a soul. The other is soulless and completely uninspiring. I had a 986S many years ago, and nothing beats the scream of a flat six passing 7000 rpm and that won´t change no matter how fast the EV version is in a straight line. (Remember the 4-cyl fart-in-a-can Boxster engine? What a joke that was.)
Then add handling to the equation: I´m sure Porsche will make the EV Boxster/Cayman handle well, but (until they invent light batteries) it will be thru loads of tech and gizmos to offset the fact that a heavy sportscar is fundamentally a contradiction in terms.
I´m all for not polluting around me when enjoying a drive, but the EV craze has killed off both the fun of driving and the excitement of car design that I used to have.

This rumour came from the You Tube channel ‘behind the glass’ where they also said the same is true for Taycan and EV Macan. With their parent VW closing factories due to the whole EV debacle for all the reasons stated they will need to do something and this would make sense. Making the Macan only EV is insane, taking your high volume car and replacing it with an EV is suicide and adding the Boxster/Cayman to that stream just fuels the fire of their demise! I hear they are rethinking this EV nonsense, they should tell the EU to pound salt and move their deadline to 2050 and even that is too soon!

You missed a big one: the competition. The Hyundai Ionic 5N has 600hp to all 4 wheels at a $70k sticker and it’s a track missile. Porsche can’t release an inferior product that costs more. So they’re between a rock and a hard place. To beat the 5N they need to have two motors and a lot of horsepower. But if they do that, they will outperform the 911. No wonder they have moved the release of the Cayman EV to 2027. I’m starting to think it will never happen.

The dealers need to in UK and Europe, as they have to sell a certain percentage of electric cars, so big discounts coming. I look at an electric 2 seater sports car as just a different thing. It will be compared to the tesla roadster and a short range is maybe ok if you are just taking it out for a play.

The reason Porsche was great was because although they were underpowered they were affordable . My 18 GT3 was $150,000 4 years later they wanted $275,000. With no power upgrade. Nobody charges more for less. I’m done with them. I have friends paying $250,000 for a boxster gt4 or RS spyder. VW has enjoyed the dollar shower from Porsche margins growing through COVID. The rain of profits is ending, the market is not able to absorb the price increases. Porsche makes too many cars to survive on Ferrari - like sales quantities. Competition from good used Porsches is intense. Honestly, it looks like going electric is only going to make matters worse. Reviewers are dutifully shouting about how great the electric Macan is, but, that’s their job. Nobody asked for it. As long as we are free to find cheaper, and, more engaging alternatives, we will. It’s very sad all around. We adapt. Not so sure about many of these car companies, however. I think your analysis of the new plug in Boxster is spot on.

  • @PorscheCaymanG

Jay, great observations about the new 718 EVs. Most Porsche sports cars are kept for many decades. An expensive battery replacement after 12-15 years will make this kind of tenure unrealistic financially. Furthermore, as you’ve stated, Porsche doesn’t want to challenge their very profitable 911 franchise with a faster 718. Thus, the 718 EV is not likely to have the performance that a Porsche EV could have. They could easily make the 718 EV faster than the 911, but they won’t.

In what world would a 911 need to 'compete' with a 718 EV? There is literally no competition, they are completely separate products for two different buyers. Saying that they compete in the same market is a massive disservice to the 911.
That being said, because its true, there is no reason the 718 EV cannot be quicker, because they don't compete with each other. As an EV enthusiast they simply do not compare to ICE vehicles for sportiness, and I don't care about 0-60 times anything in the 4s-5s ballpark is adequate. However... what you fail to see is EVs make much better daily drivers, much less of a hassle to own in town. No leaks, no oil changes, no stopping for fuel ever, always there always dependable always zero maintenance aside from tires.
There are several advantages that 'could' be implemented but aren't guaranteed to be. The first of which is if they choose to have two independent rear motors, they can implement perfect torque vectoring without a mechanical rear differential, which is a massive improvement to handling. Also EVs benefit from a lower CG benefits, obviously the instant torque, and never having to stop to fill up. Most don't realize how convenient the last point is.
718 EV is mostly for those wives that want a luxury convertible and don't care as much about 'peak' handling performance, more about the top down/balanced/luxury, and are more about the image of the vehicle. Range shouldn't matter much, ~200 miles is plenty to go anywhere to the edge of any town and back and you're back to full the next time you take it out. Also the Cayman will have access to the Tesla network at least in NA when it releases or soon after its release in late 2025.
I do hope they keep the weight under 3500 lbs though, because otherwise, what is the point?

    • @JAYREAD

It'll be awesome. The Batteries will give it a really low center of gravity, they'll keep it as light as possible, but even if it's over 3000 pounds, it'll be so much more powerful it won't matter. I rented a 2020 911 Cabriolet for a week, and then swapped it for a Tesla Model 3 rental. It was a night and day difference. The Tesla felt faster, was much easier to drive, and was just a lot more fun to toss around. It was like a giant go-kart. The 911 felt heavy and slow.
So imagine Tesla like performance in a small Porsche tuned sports car. It won't make the same noise, and you can't shift it, but it'll be the car to beat... if they do it right.
Honestly, does Porsche even care about enthusiasts, or Porsche loyalists? If they did, they'd let you buy a 911 with a stick.

You hit the nail on the head, Stephen. I’ve been a Porsche enthusiast for forty years and seen them go from a sports car company to a SUV company. That said, Porsche would not have survived without that. The Cayenne saves the company. For me, the magic in the car has always been in its balance and weight. I loved the compact size of the previous generation 911s but today, they are a huge vehicle which is why I migrated my love affair to the 718. What was frustrating though was Porsche’s refusal to optimise the 718 platform to protect the 911. I have, however, finally found nirvana in the final iteration of the 718 which is the Spyder RS. Unless you’re driving the Nurburgring every second day, the Spyder RS is the best road going Porsche I have ever driven. The road focused build has made this one of the greatest road cars the company has and probably will ever build. It’s very light, relatively small and with the GT3 block in it, amazing on the road. How on earth is Porsche ever going to get an EV to match this experience when what makes this car great are the characteristics that EVs cannot replicate?

    • @stephenfoster6940
      @stephenfoster6940 2 місяці тому

@@klkh2002 Totally agree. I think that Porsche realised that protecting the 911 platform by not fully exploiting the potential of the Boxster/Cayman may have made some sense when the 911 was not so different in size to the Cayman (996 and 997 particularly), but once it became so bloated (992) then it was quite apparent that there was less direct competition between the Boxster/Cayman and the 911. When a 981 or 718 Cayman is parked next to a 996/997 then it’s obvious that they are the true successors to the original 911 concept except that they are blessed with the natural advantages of the mid-engined layout. The more road-focused suspension settings of the Spyder RS in comparison to the GT3 RS and GT4 RS makes for a sublime real-world driving experience. And the lack of the extreme aero bodywork allows the elegance of the Boxster design to be fully appreciated (the ducktail is gorgeous). The 911 cabrio (for those seeking an open air sports car driving experience) looks almost ugly next to a Boxster - they never really got the styling of the rear end right in my opinion.

I suspect that in the same way the 718 marked `the end` of the 6cyl Boxster Porsche will suddenly change their minds and ICE Boxsters will miraculously appear again. They've already backpedalled on their EV switchover plans. Fingers crossed.

Tried to pre-order the E-Boxster, no response or timeline from Porsche. Forced me to go to MG to beg for their open top gangster - delivery also delayed until further notice. Whoever's first on market gets my money to get rid of my M3P.
Leave the ICE's to ancient dinosaurs who love exhaust fumes, stupid noise, absurd servicing bills and lousy performance...

One only needs to look at the dismal sales and depreciation of the Taycan and EV Macan (upcoming) to predict the success of the EV Boxster/Cayman. The EV vehicle and infrastructure technology is not ready (range, weight, charging time, battery service life and disposal cost, life cycle cost, etc). 0-60 times are not enough of an enticement to sell an exorbitantly priced, overweight, underperforming, “sports car” to a very small niche market segment. Is it too late for Porsche to reverse course on this EV insanity and avoid bankruptcy?….hard to say. I’ll keep my 987.2 Boxster with Soul exhaust (ahhhh, that intoxicating sound), 3k lb weight, 450 mile range, 5 minute refueling time (everywhere), manual trans, great reliability, and mostly pure affordable driving enjoyment. A sad day for Porsche!

Hey Jay! Thank you, your videos are always awesome! i recently read an article that Porsche due to poor sales of the Taycan, they will be scaling back their electric cars. I predict that they will come out with an ICE Taycan. so, their will be an electric Boxster/Cayman but i dont think they are going to replace it entirely. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Let’s hope! Isn’t an ICE Taycan really just a Panamera? Actually, I really loved the Taycan when I tried it. Bloody fast! Let’s see anyway! Electric Boxster 🤮

So, Porsche says the Macan will retain 70% of its battery capacity through 8 years. Isn't that the same as saying the battery will lose 30% of its capacity after only 8 years? Who would buy a used one?

EV vs 4 cylinder - I’ll take the EV for the same price or lower. Quite excited about it for a first EV.

We're in the twilight years of the enthusaist car era as far as Im considered. I just bought the c8 z06 and while i absolutely love it, I cant forsee any new cars (let alone EV"s) that will match the enjoyment and engagement the Z provides. I pretty much know at this point, my next enthusiast car will be an older one

I owned a taycan, had a 718 at same time. Found i hated going out in the Taycan and was always using the boxster . After a year of software faults i got rid of the taycan. Thankfully in 2021 so i lost just 2000 pounds. I tried the MG Cyberster recently, sadly again 1st too small for a 6ft guy 2nd platform of batteries is just not what a sports car should be. Too high too heavy. I am not sure how the Electric Boxster will be able to overcome the laws of physics. I dont think it will and so will end up like another car i owned briefly in the last 2 years, a BMW Z4. A good GT car but not a sports car. It will look good but wont be as fun.

The sick part is - when I took biology years ago CO2 was called the “molecule of life”. Whenever there’s more of it the planet is greener and healthier. Even today, the slight increases in the gas has greened the planet especially in more arid regions - since higher levels of CO2 means plants need less water to thrive. Did you know greenhouses add CO2 to boost crop yields? The entire planet has seen the same effect. More CO2 is net beneficial to earth. The only reason for the net zero insanity is to hurt Russia - as their strategic advantage is energy. Hopefully Trump will end the madness in the USA.

I wouldn’t rely on Trump to fix literally anything. The man is an incompetent buffoon with multiple personality defects. That said, pollution is caused by humans not cars. The more humans you have, the more waste there is. Fewer humans is the answer.

Beautiful design. However, I sure hope they make it backwards compatible when the inevitable 😉 need arises to convert it back to ICE. Then it can use cheap/clean synthetic fuel 🐝 🌺 🌞 🌳. What a weight savings that will be, all the while being so much kinder to Mother Nature!

I've been a Porscheholic since 1958; the models you can maintain with basic tools and a timing light. These ev models have all the appeal of a new refrigerator. No soul just an appliance with all the gadgetry that makes driving boring. Hopefully Porsche comes up with a viable syn fuel for the faithful.

  • @joegf1739

Lots of FUD here. Plus your arguments actually work in favor of a Cayman EV:
    1) balance: EVs are supremely balanced, even moreso than a mid engine flat 6.
    2) quirkiness: unaffected by being an EV.
    3) size/weight: Yes batteries are heavy, but it's Porsche, the world's best engineers, and will address this.
Lastly, they have to evolve and wouldn't dare take the risk on the 911. It only makes sense to push into the future and take risks on the Cayman.
Give Porsche the benefit of the doubt here. They have always made timeless sports cars and always will.

I'm driving an EV as a loaner car while mine is in for service. Until manufacturers can make them for $50,000, charge in minutes, not hours, and 500 miles of range, I think they are doomed to be a sales success.

500 miles range? That is a bit extreme. None of my cars, all ICE, have that range. Neither does my bladder… 😮
