Hi There! The "mirror rot" happens from moisture getting between the backing and silvering on the back of the glass either from the side or scratch on the back. After cutting and cleaning your pieces, if you place them face down on newsprint and spraypaint sides and back it will give you extra protection. Just wanted to share.
Hey Makenzie, I’ve watched several videos presented by a variety of people to learn how to do glass work. You are the BEST. Your techniques , tips, and overall methods are fun and fantastic. Thank you so very much for what you do to share your knowledge. You encourage taking on new challenges. Important for all aspects in life. Your videos are amazing. Thanks again.
I think that's what made it so funny. It's clear you didn't mean it in that way but you caught yourself and thought oh crap 😂😂. You are a breath of fresh air. This uk nurse thinks ur awesome (and not violent) 🥰
Second time I’ve watched this! I love this and it may be my next attempt once I find the appropriate glass. Love it! You’re fantastic, I can’t say that enough. 😊❤
Makenzie, wanted to thank you for all the good information on your channel. I learned stained glass from an old school guy here in Marquette, MI 15-20 years ago and did numerous projects. Got away from it but now that I am retired I pulled out my stuff and used your channel to “refresh”. Long winded way to say thanks for clueing me in on using running pliers instead of old style pliers. They work GREAT!
Awesome!! Welcome back and thank you for watching! I've had alot of folks say my channel is a great refresher, im so glad to help and show different ways to attack the glass! Thank you so much!
Wow another great video! Thanks again for all the information. I don't use mirrored glass that often, but when I do, I use clear nail polish on the edges of smaller items and on larger pieces, also used clear aerosol paint on the whole backs of mirror pieces. let them dry thoroughly before foiling the pieces. I haven't had that " rot/spotty" situation happen to my pieces. Having put the time and effort into my pieces, this assures a better chance of them lasting without the ugly spotting. Just a thought....
What works for me is, when I finish my piece I use a generous amount of baking soda to remove as much flux as possible before washing it. Simply rub it where the flux 'escaped' until you get most of it {you can use a paper towel, soft cloth, tooth brush or whatever works}. I wear gloves because I am coming into direct contact with the flux. The baking soda also polishes the solder and makes it easier for the patina to stick. Great job on the star! Your idea to use the corner of your mat was ingenious!
You can make beautiful outdoor lighting with that style maybe different glass obsidian mirrors would be cool too hehe. I do lapidary work so this would be cool 😁
Yippee, mirror glass! I always thought mirror rot was caused by flux / patina being corrosive, so your tip to avoid any moisture at all is really helpful. I've avoided it to avoid disappointment but will be braver now and just treat it as another glass learning curve. On the right angle question, you could maybe draw yourself a square using the base measurement, to have a square that size for aligning it? Your edges were exactly right, and the result is gorgeous. I might make a smaller one to sit on the mantle with candles. Thank you for the inspiration and tips! Happy Saturday to all from sunny Scotland
This turned out so radd!! You did perfect w using colored mirror. Absolutely loving these vids. Except they always make me want to start doing this but I just can't take on a new hobby right now. It's a goal I plan on getting to once I'm moved & settled. 🖤❣🖤
You can use that green soft styrofoam stuff used for plant arrangements to hold the pieces together temporarily for your initial tacking. Obviously, just don't get it wet. 🙋♀️💕
WOW, LOVE IT! What do you use for a jump ring on heavier items? Do you make a jump ring and/or what do you use to make one? I LOVE IT, GREAT JOB AS USUAL Thank you for sharing
That glass 😍😍😍 I've been wanting to make a star, but haven't done stained glass in about 4 months, so I'm gonna have to get back into it and practice a little first. I got really ambitious and bought a bunch of Worden lamp forms and patterns a while back since they are damn near impossible to find anymore. Thought I would buy what I could find so in the future, when I'm actually good enough to make a lamp, I'll actually have some patterns and forms 😂😂 I think you could make a really cool lamp!
You spoke about keeping the mirror dry so you won't get staining, I am just getting into stained glass so what are your thoughts on cleaning the soldered joints with alcohol instead of water. I have over 40 years of soldering in the electronics field and i always used alcohol to remove flux along with compressed air for drying. Thank You for the video.
I’m very new to stained glass, but I think plasticine could work well to help hold all your pieces together! I’ve seen people use it to prop up resin so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work here🙂
That was the book I got a month ago to learn stained glass. It is ok. I just used the info on tools needed and such. Will you try the heart mirror in that book?
cool af! i've got some idea's i want to try, but first i've gotta figure out how to make the 3d model to turn into stained glass, where i could basically make a giant set of pieces, to slowly solder together
I’m so glad you made this video. I have been wanting to do something like this since last year and it’s just sitting in a box. My issue is that my triangles have 3 sides instead of 4.
Will just have to figure out what angle the base needs to sit at. Draw that on a piece of paper and use that as a stencil, like I did the corner of the matt.
I'm sure great! But, if the flux is the mystery issue, which I'm thinking yes, a dryer wouldn't do much I don't think. Somebody else had mentioned this, so I'm absolutely going to give it a try. Worth a shot for sure!!
No such thing as a silly question! I toss the whole bucket. If you wanted to transfer all the glass mud into a bag and toss it, to save your bucket, you could absolutely do that too! Maybe fill a bucket a year with mud.
Hi Makenzie...sorry I am asking this here on utube but I didn't know how else to get in touch with you. Have you ever worked with Yogi cut offs? I have a few pieces and I want to do a beach window with one and i would like to keep the edge and not solder it?
@@MakenzieHallie I am told that the “yogi” glass pieces I bought are cutoffs from a bigger sheet. They are nicely rounded and smooth at the edge. Wish I could send a picture.
