50 some years ago (is that even possible?) when I was learning stained glass, I would have saved lots of $$$ if the teacher used your teaching techniques. I think it is! I have just never been able to do it the traditional way, and find its 10x quicker if you can do it effectively. Watch out for the judgy judies though. 😂 Some old schoolers will come for ya cuttin like me. 😂😂😂🖤🖤🖤
Thank you for taking the time to make it as easy and simple as possible I went out and bought glass, cutters, iron and soldier two days ago thinking I don't need to take a class or anything (I'm the stereotypical "I don't need to ask for help" guy) and I just wasted three hours of trying to soldier my glass without foil but long story short I just wanted to say thank you for the help😉
Oh no!! 😂😂 well I'm glad my video helped!!! Taking classes in something as tricky as stained glass, can only help!! Im often the same way, but I did need help alot in this art! I regret not taking classes a little. BUT Nothing wrong with that!
I’ve noticed you use a pulling down action when demonstrating the nippers/grozing pliers. I used to use them like that, nipping very small pieces from a piece of glass. That resulted in exploding glass everywhere and jagged edges. But I recently asked about it at my local glass shop and the person helping me showed me that it’s a straight pull-apart motion. I tried it there and it worked beautifully! I’m not sure if pulling the piece off with the nippers is the action you use, or the pull-down/nip action, but I found it super useful knowledge. I was just using the nippers wrong! Also, the flat side should be on top of the glass. I tried it with the flat side on the bottom and it made the glass explode. But flat on top it worked to pull a small piece away with no explosions!
Hello Dawn! Yes! You can use them pulling out or down, also use them to grind away at the glass (intentionally exploding) bits off, like you would cutting glass with scissors! I just don't use them at all! Never been a fan, I am a 1 cut kind of gal! Thank you for watching!! 🖤

This video made me brave enough to go to a local stained glass class. I'm already hooked. Instructor was impressed with my glass cutting, but my secret was I had watched this video multiple times. :) Then I managed to cut my thumb, on the outside of my thumb, enough to drip blood all over my shirt. But I didn't even know when I did it.

Mackenzie, why haven’t I seen your videos before. I was obsessed with learning the correct way of using stained glass tools and how to cut glass etc, and armed myself with tools from the US (I paid more in shipping than the tools themselves), but I just didn’t find really good, informative videos, and just used my nippers instead to make mosaic pieces. This was over two years ago, but because we moved house during the lockdowns, all my stained glass stuff was packed away. Well, I shall now watch your videos and get back on track. You are an inspiration to all beginners.
I love that you're all about just replacing the tips or rubber toppers. I get used to my tools and then I HATE replacing them. The next set of tools never feel the same in my hand even if they're the exact same tools lol

Wholly crap... your video is soooooo good. The fine details are fantastic. I recently purchased running pliers from amazon to help with my current project. I was squeezing as hard as I could and I couldn't get it to crack the glass. Figured I got a bad pair. After you explained the top of the pliers should be concaved a bit I ran out to my garage and after taking the plastic bumpers off I noticed they have zero curve. Guess I ordered the wrong item. I just ordered the newest runners from Brier so hoping I get to experience that tiny "click" when the glass separates. Funny that you hate the grosser pliers because that is my main tool. Hopefully the new runners change the way I break glass. Keep up the GREAT videos. Just saw one with a glass church. You got my creative mind thinking and also thank you for also mentioning and suggesting for others to make their own designs. I agree that that is what makes it so personal.

Many thanks for making my first project with glass a success. It wasn't any fancy cut glass work, just cutting an oval clock glass; but it went very well only because of this video.
I've been doing stained glass for over 10 years, using the same Toyo Pistol grip cutter, and never had it leak. I only fill it with a small amount of oil, since a little goes a long way. Also, your using the nippers the wrong way, flat side should be on the top to gently pull the glass apart. The curved edge on top should only be used to remove small pieces of glass left after the cut. Love the detail you give in the videos, very informative and worth watching.
I'd been doing the scallop and nip technique for ever. This may get me back making things again. No shards and fritt all over everywhere. Thank you soo much. My shopping list starts with running pliers.
I've been working with stained glass for a long time and do the "old" way of cutting curves. I'm going to try your way now! You make it look so easy! Also, cutting heavily textured glass can be a nightmare. I've stayed away from it but I'm going to give it another try. Another great video. Keep em coming!

Great video, awesome tips. I have been working with glass for 5 years now and I love learning new techniques. I always struggle with making curves and I will be giving this a try today. I am brand new at stained glass, in fact, I haven't made a piece yet but I am getting braver everyday. I haven't seen a video yet that explains all the different types of surfaces to use for different types of work, example; I've seen plywood, ceiling panels, drywall, corkboard, homasote. I use to do stain glass back in the day 20 + years ago but because of my job (lots to do with a ton of pressure) it had to take a back seat... I now have time and I'm getting back into it and UA-cam is helping a lot with getting re-familiar with the art... I still have my grinders, tools and a crate full of glass and just itching to get back into it... I'll definitely be checking out your other videos... Hi :) I am new to this and in the process of getting all the gear in order to start making my own things .... I came searching for guidance in how much oil to put in the pistol cutter as I put enough in to fill about a 1/3rd and lo and behold oil was leaking everywhere so here I am and wish I had found you before that happened but hey happy little accidents lead onto greater things :) I also have 2 pairs of the growzer (nipper) pliers wide and narrow and do not feel too happy with them so will try the running pliers only and see how I get on with them and if ok then will stick with them for sure. :) I have now subscribed and look forward to learning more from you as I now binge your videos LOL .. Thank you for your tuition and help with the basic of things .. well they are when you know!!! Thanks to you I do now .. off to empty out the pistol cutter of oil if it hasn't already done so by itself ;)

I am now starting my journey with a great guide and feel much more confident already. I have done a couple of classes and like you mentioned in one of your videos something inside just 'clicked' and you just know its something your going to enjoy doing. Omg thank you so much for the tip about opening the running pliers. When I took the class they never mentioned it!! Completely changed the way my glass breaks!!!
Hi! No not dumb at all. So my instinct is to just say youll know when you need to change it but i suppose that comes with time in the art form. So, with that said you will notice a shift in how its grinding. Its taking way longer to grind away thickness, you may notice your pushing harder on the glass, chips in certain glass, etc. So after youve moved your bit up and down the shaft to use up all that surface area, then its time for a new bit. ♡ hope this helps!
Wowza i am so sorry. I dont know how in the world my mind read that as glass grinder. 🤣😂 well good news is, essentially same answer. You will feel the shift. But glass cutters last a very very long time. If your using oil those babies should last many months with everyday use. But youll have to push harder, breaks may start messing up, cracking off score etc. Again, im so sorry about that!!! Idk how i did that. 😂🤣

I do not have one specifically for cutting circles, but if it's tricky for ya by hand I would just suggest a jig cutter or setup like cutters mate, circle pro, etc. I would cut it the same way I would anything else. Leaving space on the edge, and making maybe about 2/3 scores to finish the full circle. Hope that makes sense. 🖤
I LOVE this!!!! I’m a moon lover myself but glass moons are the devil! 😂 I have ruined so much glass trying to cut moons and even when I get it, it’s hit and miss. I’m right next to our a/c when I’m cutting so that must be a factor too. Thank you so much! You are a wonderful teacher! 💜

This video made me brave enough to go to a local stained glass class. I'm already hooked. Instructor was impressed with my glass cutting, but my secret was I had watched this video multiple times. :) Then I managed to cut my thumb, on the outside of my thumb, enough to drip blood all over my shirt. But I didn't even know when I did it.

Mackenzie, why haven’t I seen your videos before. I was obsessed with learning the correct way of using stained glass tools and how to cut glass etc, and armed myself with tools from the US (I paid more in shipping than the tools themselves), but I just didn’t find really good, informative videos, and just used my nippers instead to make mosaic pieces. This was over two years ago, but because we moved house during the lockdowns, all my stained glass stuff was packed away. Well, I shall now watch your videos and get back on track. You are an inspiration to all beginners.
I love that you're all about just replacing the tips or rubber toppers. I get used to my tools and then I HATE replacing them. The next set of tools never feel the same in my hand even if they're the exact same tools lol

Wholly crap... your video is soooooo good. The fine details are fantastic. I recently purchased running pliers from amazon to help with my current project. I was squeezing as hard as I could and I couldn't get it to crack the glass. Figured I got a bad pair. After you explained the top of the pliers should be concaved a bit I ran out to my garage and after taking the plastic bumpers off I noticed they have zero curve. Guess I ordered the wrong item. I just ordered the newest runners from Brier so hoping I get to experience that tiny "click" when the glass separates. Funny that you hate the grosser pliers because that is my main tool. Hopefully the new runners change the way I break glass. Keep up the GREAT videos. Just saw one with a glass church. You got my creative mind thinking and also thank you for also mentioning and suggesting for others to make their own designs. I agree that that is what makes it so personal.

I've been doing stained glass for over 10 years, using the same Toyo Pistol grip cutter, and never had it leak. I only fill it with a small amount of oil, since a little goes a long way. Also, your using the nippers the wrong way, flat side should be on the top to gently pull the glass apart. The curved edge on top should only be used to remove small pieces of glass left after the cut. Love the detail you give in the videos, very informative and worth watching.

I've been working with stained glass for a long time and do the "old" way of cutting curves. I'm going to try your way now! You make it look so easy! Also, cutting heavily textured glass can be a nightmare. I've stayed away from it but I'm going to give it another try. Another great video. Keep em coming!

I haven't seen a video yet that explains all the different types of surfaces to use for different types of work, example; I've seen plywood, ceiling panels, drywall, corkboard, homasote. I use to do stain glass back in the day 20 + years ago but because of my job (lots to do with a ton of pressure) it had to take a back seat... I now have time and I'm getting back into it and UA-cam is helping a lot with getting re-familiar with the art... I still have my grinders, tools and a crate full of glass and just itching to get back into it... I'll definitely be checking out your other videos... Glad you're taking the time to share... back in the day of no UA-cam, I would of had to sign up for a class at our local community college or seek out a stain glass studio where I had to pay to learn... Here, folks get it free and right from their home... I can definitely tell you are INTO STAIN GLASS!!! Hi :) I am new to this and in the process of getting all the gear in order to start making my own things .... I came searching for guidance in how much oil to put in the pistol cutter as I put enough in to fill about a 1/3rd and lo and behold oil was leaking everywhere so here I am and wish I had found you before that happened but hey happy little accidents lead onto greater things :) I also have 2 pairs of the growzer (nipper) pliers wide and narrow and do not feel too happy with them so will try the running pliers only and see how I get on with them and if ok then will stick with them for sure. :) I have now subscribed and look forward to learning more from you as I now binge your videos LOL .. Thank you for your tuition and help with the basic of things .. well they are when you know!!! Thanks to you I do now .. off to empty out the pistol cutter of oil if it hasn't already done so by itself ;)

Hi! No not dumb at all. So my instinct is to just say youll know when you need to change it but i suppose that comes with time in the art form. So, with that said you will notice a shift in how its grinding. Its taking way longer to grind away thickness, you may notice your pushing harder on the glass, chips in certain glass, etc. So after youve moved your bit up and down the shaft to use up all that surface area, then its time for a new bit. ♡ hope this helps!

Wowza i am so sorry. I dont know how in the world my mind read that as glass grinder. 🤣😂 well good news is, essentially same answer. You will feel the shift. But glass cutters last a very very long time. If your using oil those babies should last many months with everyday use. But youll have to push harder, breaks may start messing up, cracking off score etc. Again, im so sorry about that!!! Idk how i did that. 😂🤣

Do you have a circle cutting video?
I do not have one specifically for cutting circles, but if it's tricky for ya by hand I would just suggest a jig cutter or setup like cutters mate, circle pro, etc. I would cut it the same way I would anything else. Leaving space on the edge, and making maybe about 2/3 scores to finish the full circle. Hope that makes sense. 🖤

I LOVE this!!!! I’m a moon lover myself but glass moons are the devil! 😂 I have ruined so much glass trying to cut moons and even when I get it, it’s hit and miss. I’m right next to our a/c when I’m cutting so that must be a factor too. Thank you so much! You are a wonderful teacher! 💜

So the black mat is just a soldering mat (heat resistant), under that I have a piece of wood. The island is a bamboo work bench painted black!
