Hi Makenzie! I love your work! I have a quick question for your jump rings: do you pre-tin your jump rings or buy them pre-tinned? I bought silver covered copper wire, but I am not sure if this is the same as buying copper wire and tinning it yourself? Or am I able to just buy a bunch of jump rings from a craft store and call it a day? I am wondering if they patina the same if you are not pre-tinning yourself. Sorry for so many questions! I think this is the one thing where I'm still not sure. Thank you in advance!
OMG, you are the very best stained glass instructor, especially for my old brain that finds it hard to learn new stuff. You make soldering seem so easy, I was so nervous about starting to solder. Now I feel confident starting my stained glass work. Thanks so much for going to all the trouble of making your stained glass instruction videos. I would bet many of us would have loved this video before we started. Very good info! Through time we learn what we love through not loving things....lol. I think one very important thing that needs reiterated for beginners or potential futures, is, its not just one and done.... this is an ongoing, constantly expensive hobby. That $20 roll of tape , lasts MAYBE a week. That $30 solder, maybe a week...lol.. Grinder bit replacements etc .... glass prices to ship....omg are we lucky to have semi local shops. I can buy 4+ extra 12x12 for the price of shipping in most cases. I know finding glass was not on my list of what to's when starting but got super lucky...to live pretty close to Youghiogheny. Unrelated note, grinders. I don't know how many times I have seen ppl ask if they can just us their Dremel to grind....lmao!! UM
After binge watching your videos I feel like I can totally do this! You explain everything so well and even as someone who knew zero when I started watching you I understood what you were explaining and that's rare for me! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I want to make my own glass medallions instead of bying them but they're for wearing as pendants so I don't think I can use solder that has lead in it. Any idea what I can use instead? Thanks!
Absolutely correct. You have to use a lead free solder. So you have to read up on ALL the options available for lead free solders and figure out which ones sound the best for you. You specifically will be looking for the best jewelry making solders. Taking type/finish/etc into account, if you wont be using any patina type products.
Just ordered a soldering mat, usually I just put my pattern pinned on a piece of drop ceiling piece (but they don't sell just one anymore) and pin and solder ......if you have a project with many pieces and you need to pin the pieces together....what do you put underneath the mat?? Love your videos!!!!!!!
Thanks for this excellent video. I got the inspiration I wanted for my own stained glass projects. Can you make a video showing how you would do a unicursal seven pointed star?
Hi Makenzie. I absolutely love your videos. Just one question about positioning of the jump loops, especially on the inside curves...Will gravity not detach the solder from the Glass as the foil glue degrades ?
How do you attach jump loops to hobby came edges? Do you just lay flat and solder on like this or do you need to have them upright in a clamp? Thanks! Love all your videos
Hi!!! Love the way you describe! Would like to ask you how canI do those perfect curvs an circles, I find trouble to cut them, and so when you grind them to do it even ! Than you Mackenzie, really you inspire me!
Hi, I love your videos and have been following you. I was wondering if you could share your moon phase pattern? I am also new to the stained glass hobby and your videos are very informative and you don't make any short cuts. I have learned alot from watching your videos than me taking a class and only know short cuts. Thank you for being so I don't know how to word it lol but basically right to the point and taking it step by step.
Hello! Thank you so much! I do not share or recommend chain or jump loops from online. Unfortunately quality control with bulk chain and jump rings online can be unreliable so I can't in good conscience share. But thank you for watching!!
So in general I've just had no experience patching ceramics with copper foil so that alone makes me unsure. But my main concern is just how well the foil will stick to it, and how strong it will end up. But I think it's worth trying for sure! If the foil sticks well, your golden.
Loved this video! The black base you use to work on with all the little squares (not the cutting mat), what is that made of? I looked in your tools videos but didn't see a mention of that, it looks very useful. Thanks for the great inspiration!
Ohp, I'm sorry! It's just a heat resistant or "soldering mat", you can find any size you need right on Amazon! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and feel inspired! Currently uploading another room makeover video as we speak, will have more glass videos asap! Thank you so much for watching!
So if you were making this same design but much bigger, would you suggest placing the jump loops somewhere else? Like how it's recommended to place them on joints?. So would you suggest placing clear glass in-between the moon's for a bigger piece? I hope I'm making sense. I guess what I'm saying is that if it was much bigger, you'd want to rework how you do it because of the weight right?
Hi Makenzie, this is Eva, writing fr Spain. So glad to have found you!! I m totally new but TOTALLY interested in stained glass which is INEXISTANT where I live. So I am trying to teach myself . Hi Eva! Unfortunately I am not much help in that department lop, I've always drawn my own stencils so I have no idea the first place to go for good free stencils! But you can just type that right into Google, "stained glass patterns" and go down the rabbit hole! Welcome to stained glass and thank you for watching!!!
Thanks makenzie, that tutorial was so informative, the black board you use for cutting and soldering, does that have a name, I have just started using glass for fusing and stained glass but I'd like a board like yours xx
Thank you so much! So glad your enjoying my channel!! And if you are referring to black soldering mat, you can find those right on amazon! Thank you for watching!
Hello my lovely 😊 just a quick question…what types of chains can we use in projects? Example. Does it need to be a specific metal please? Thank you so much for sharing…you’re awesome 🤩. Sending you lots of love and light.
What a great video on stained glass using very comprehendible thorough instruction. Thank you. Im a fan and subscribed. Interested in your small grinder...do you reccomend it or go a little bigger which is what I've seen?? Also the brand would be helpful. Thanks again.
hi Makenzie i love your video, one question, from what material aree the jumprings made, i normaly use stainless steel. Do i need the silvered copper ones, or can i use the stainless steel
could you do a video on hanging techniques? i dont trust suction cups and have looked into fishing line, but i don’t quite understand how to use that & theres not a lot of videos on it
Well, I don't normally suggest any ways to specifically hang other then just straight up permanent solutions. (Cover my own ass) Unfortunately anything but, will always be a gamble. Heavy duty suction cups, heavy duty command hooks, etc, all can vary according to how its applied or taken care of. So I always say, permanent hook. Nail, anchor, etc. Otherwise, I'm not responsible. You know what I mean? I use to include heavy duty suction cups and commands, which were fine, never had a complaint. But I still shifted to be safe then sorry.
@@MakenzieHallie I completely understand & appreciate you playing it safe! I completely understand. I am looking into fishing line with crimp sleeves to secure the line onto the jumphoops then secure the line with a nail or something on the wall. Btw, I apologize in advance, I just ordered a beginners kit and going to be trying this all out! So I might post a comment here & there while I am learning haha, thank you for all your advice on literally everything though! much appreciated 🥰
Oh ok ok, I'm so sorry, I totally misunderstood your question, more so about the actual hanger then the wall hook. Ok so yes, that way is absolutely safe (always according to weight) and using something like fishing line, or a stretch clear just always double up those crimps for safety and to "knot" the wire. Does that make sense?
@@MakenzieHallie Where do you find your chainlink? My local jewelry supply store closed and I'm not really happy with the selection at Hobby Lobby. Any tips for purchasing this it online or should I check my local hardware store?
Newbie here. Loving your work and your wealth of knowledge! Question... how do you determine which "scraps" are worth saving and which to toss when you are cutting-do you go by size?? Also, how do you know when to replace a grinding bit? 🤔
So scraps is all up to you. What you will and won't make use of. Grinder bit is when you feel it's not grinding well anymore. You can tell when it's working like shit or your having to push harder on the grinder. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for watching! I would deff recommend watching my "stained glass tools, and how to use them" videos! part 1 and 2! That explains everything you'd need! 🖤
Can you kindly do a video on how did you learn the art of staining the glass, is there a training center? Or is this a skill a person develops on his own.. like DIY
Hello! I actually am self taught! Watched a couple UA-cam videos and gave it a shot! But, normally I would always suggest taking classes from a local shop! 🖤
Hello. Thank you for this video. I was wondering what is the black surface you were working on there (when you align all the moons and chain together and solder them)?
Hmm, I don't think there is any other result but matte black. I do not use polish or look to change the metal/patina so I don't think I'm the right person to help for this. I suppose it depends how matte are we talking? It will never reflect light like silver metal, as it's black.
Love your videos! I'm am really getting into stained glass during this pandemic, and your videos are the best! One question.... If you make a mistake with solder, can you remove it and start over? Would you have to refoil the piece?
Well before I answer that, what kind of mistake are you thinking of? If you for some reason had to resolder it, there is no way to remove it. Melting it off would destroy the integrity of the foil, so it all has to be removed and redone. Foil and solder.
@@MakenzieHallie First of all, thank you for your quick response - I almost never hear back from other You Tubers. This is my mistake - I put a jump ring on in the wrong place, and it fell off (piece was too heavy) - I have since learned (through you :-) ) that the ring needs to be near a joint. So, can I just reattach the jump ring in the right place and smooth out the area where it was before? Does that even make sense?
Ok so for this instance you can absolutely just add another jump loop in the right place. Having to redo the entire piece is worst case scenario, one step above trashing the whole piece. And your welcome! Happy to help!
Makenzie Hallie thank you for your reply , I’ve never done it before so wanted to start small , maybe sea glass key rings , I love what you made and look forward to more of your tutorials x
I unfortunately do not suggest chain or jump loops, so many vary greatly over time with quality and strength, I'm just not comfortable doing so! I'm sorry! Thank you so much for watching!
Hello Makenzie, I have watched all your videos for tips on learning this Beautiful Art! When I started soldering, I accidently left my solder outside on the porch and it corroded to a dull rough finish. is there a way to clean this, or will it make a difference when using?
Absolutely. I would take 0000 or 000 steel wool and go over it. What you are seeing is basically metal mold... its from moisture. Honestly just hitting it with heat when you are working might just turn out fine depending on the severity of it. Test it.... But if not try the steel wool.
how often do you get glass splinters? i bought a huge stained glass kit (used) and i was cleaning off the glass and immediately got a sliver lol just wondering how often i should expect it!
😂😂😂😫😫😫 oh nooo!!!! WELL, unfortunately it does absolutely come with the territory. However, the more you learn to handle your tools/glass, and get to practice, the less it will happen. I don't get splinters often at all anymore, but I do absolutely slice my fingers almost everytime I grind glass. I usually grind about 12 to 15 pieces at a time, so its expected. lol. Now that I'm a couple years in, I can dig my hands around in a glass scrap bin and not get cut. I will also say that now, I don't even jump or flinch when I do get sliced as my fingertips have almost become desensitized a bit? You'll absolutely get used to the feeling. But practice makes perfect, expect alot of cuts and splinters over the next year. lol. Remember, the most dangerous pieces are the ones we can't see. Everytime we break, cut or grind glass, there are tiny shards flying everywhere. Those are the ones that can become painful/dangerous if infected and not removed. So just remember to sweep up your desk after every single break, and then throughly vacuum when your all done! 🖤 MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN!!!!! Welcome to the world of glass!!!!
@@MakenzieHallie thank you!! i'm coming from the sewing world so i'm use to dealing with broke needles, but those are MUCH larger. i'm also a pro cup breaker when i wash dishes LOL. those tiny pieces absolutely KILL! one more question, do you use a ruler often? i feel like i was cornered into buying one and i truly don't see the need for it because i want to make suncatchers, not windows or panels.
Yea, if your only freehanding and making suncatchers, a ruler or add ons are not needed! Everyone does stained glass differently and everyone has there own way to do it! So no matter what anyone tells you, if your piece is structurally sound then how you get there is up to you! Whatever works best for you!
This looks so eays. My solder runs every where. Its drips and pools on the back of the pieces that are layed down. The tip of my soldering iron doesn't pick up the bead sometimes or just drops it. My table is full of solder beads and splashes. Its chaos. Why is this happening? I've only used the iron 2 times now. Any tips?
Hello! Well, it sounds like your soldering iron is definitely not tinned, therefore not holding a bead! Get that tip tinned or your going to burn a hole through your iron tip! What kind of solder are you using and what temp are you running your iron at? Then I would say for the pooling, are you referring to gaps in between glass pieces? ....don't get overwhelmed or discouraged, just walk away from the project for a bit and we'll figure it all out!!
@@MakenzieHallie thanks for your reply! I've bought all my stuff in a stained glass store. The tin says 50/50 and my soldering iron has one setting, it just plugs in and goes. Its an 80 watts "Weller" iron made for Tiffany work. Its operating temperature is 932f. I only started this new hobby last week so I'm only using thrifted glass and old mirrors for now. I'm having an absolute blast! Its so much fun, your videos are so incredibly helpfull. I'll get some tinner for my iron and maybe the 60/40 tin, maybe that will help.
Holy moley the iron was from the stained glass store & just runs at 932° Fahrenheit????? That is insanely hot!! The melting point for solder is about 370° and your iron needs to be not a few degrees hotter! I would absolutely suggest an iron where you can see and control the temperature as it will fluctuate and change over time no matter what. And needing both 50/50 solder and 60/40 for stained glass, means the temp has to be changed on your iron accordingly. I would absolutely get some tinner and a tip cleaner on hand and use it often to keep that tip nice and new! Im so glad your finding the videos helpful and having so much fun!!!! Thank you so much for watching!!
I thought I heard you mention in one of your other videos that there are certain types of jump loops that you don't recommend for soldering. Is that right or did I hear you incorrectly?
Hello! Well, it's hard to say because there are so many options for every single tool and machine. BUT for the bare basics I would say check out my "stained glass tools" videos, part 1 and 2! Definitely a few hundred dollars! 🖤🖤 Hope this helps!
Also one more question. I found a really cool piece on eBay. It's cheap and it's pretty big for the price. Only thing is, the solder job is complete shit. Almost like it wasn't fluxed or something like you were saying.. or just made by an amateur. It's old and very beautiful overall .Is it possible to redo the solder to make the lines cleaner and stronger ?
Do you sell any of your patterns? I’m interested in the wolf stained glass pattern! Thanks love your work and you explain everything where a beginner can understand it. Thanks again
I loved watching you create this but as a fellow XL nail queen, I have so much respect for you doing this with nails because I chopped mine before class 😂
@@MakenzieHallie No worries. I bought some gloves and am working to improve my technique….which is a nice way to say keeping my hands outta the way of the dripping hot sh^t! 😁. But as you’ve said, I’m getting a bit used to the cuts and burns.
Hi, I really enjoyed this video. Can you suggest where I can purchase stained glass. I live in Louisville Ky and it seems all the glass supply shops have closed, please don’t say hobby lobby as I refuse to give them business.
😭😭😂😂 ok I will NOT say hobby lobby, although it's something you may be forced into, if you have no glass stores!!! IF your just getting into the hobby, give etsy a try and just order small squares from places that have a flat shipping rate, for like 10 bucks. I have only ever ordered glass online from 1 seller on etsy, Lesleysglasshut, she's great. I find shipping and handling charges from big places just make it impossible to do, so I avoid glass buying from big online retailers. SO with that being said, you need to search and I mean SEARCH for any hidden local stained glass or hobby stores! Otherwise your option is online, etsy or big name retailers.
🙄 Did no one ever teach you manners? I'll help. Do you walk up to people on the street giving them unsolicited opinions on their appearance? No, because it's rude. So same thing here on the internet. Probably even more so since it has quite a cowardly aspect to it as well, being behind a screen. Don't give unsolicited opinions on a stranger's looks, ever. Just all-around inappropriate and rude.
Oh &....the space! My goodness does this craft take up space. Its not one you can tuck into a drawer....hahahaaha. ESP if you have pets and kids. Danger lurks....everywhere....hahahaa.
A big thankyou from Leeds, England. I was ready to give up but after watching your videos I am beginning to get the hang of it. I love your presentation style and skill.

I'm after this answer as well please. If you have found the solution please do help me too
Love your shows. I'm new and enjoying all your shows. Gotta ask, where did you get that awesome black mat?
Thank you so much! So glad your enjoying my channel!! And if you are referring to black soldering mat, you can find those right on amazon! Thank you for watching!
Thank MacKenzie, foundnit and ordered it 🙂
Hello my lovely 😊 just a quick question…what types of chains can we use in projects? Example. Does it need to be a specific metal please? Thank you so much for sharing…you’re awesome 🤩. Sending you lots of love and light.
Does the copper tape needs to be dual side conductive ?
What a great video on stained glass using very comprehendible thorough instruction. Thank you. Im a fan and subscribed. Interested in your small grinder...do you reccomend it or go a little bigger which is what I've seen?? Also the brand would be helpful. Thanks again.
This is so awesome!!!
hi Makenzie i love your video, one question, from what material aree the jumprings made, i normaly use stainless steel.
@@MakenzieHallie yes thank you so much! ☺️ 🙏
Welcome! Here if you need me!
Where do you get the surface piece you are working on? Love your videos!
You can grab em right on Amazon! Called a heat resistant or soldering mat!! Thank you for watching!!
What is the most common size jump ring you use for attaching the chain? And what size do you use for top hanging ring?
I always use 8mm and 9mm for top of larger pieces! 🖤
@@MakenzieHallie Where do you find your chainlink? My local jewelry supply store closed and I'm not really happy with the selection at Hobby Lobby. Any tips for purchasing this it online or should I check my local hardware store?
What kind of mat are you using?
Newbie here. Loving your work and your wealth of knowledge! Question... how do you determine which "scraps" are worth saving and which to toss when you are cutting-do you go by size??
Also, how do you know when to replace a grinding bit? 🤔
So scraps is all up to you. What you will and won't make use of. Grinder bit is when you feel it's not grinding well anymore. You can tell when it's working like shit or your having to push harder on the grinder. Thank you for watching!
Thank you this is wonderful! What is the tool you used for cutting your circles/semi circles?
Thank you for watching! I would deff recommend watching my "stained glass tools, and how to use them" videos! part 1 and 2! That explains everything you'd need! 🖤
Can you kindly do a video on how did you learn the art of staining the glass, is there a training center? Or is this a skill a person develops on his own.. like DIY
Hello! I actually am self taught! Watched a couple UA-cam videos and gave it a shot! But, normally I would always suggest taking classes from a local shop! 🖤
Thanks a ton!👊☕️🍩
Hello. Thank you for this video. I was wondering what is the black surface you were working on there (when you align all the moons and chain together and solder them)?
Thank you for watching! It's just a soldering mat!
Where did you get the black board from, that you were soldering on?
WHERE CAN I BUY THE JUMP LOOPS?
I’m using novacan black to patina but it always comes out matte even if I wax with car wax. Help please?
Hmm, I don't think there is any other result but matte black. I do not use polish or look to change the metal/patina so I don't think I'm the right person to help for this. I suppose it depends how matte are we talking? It will never reflect light like silver metal, as it's black.
What is the black base you are working on ?
Are you referring to the soldering mat?
Where do you like to get your glass?
what kind of surface you recommend using
Love your videos!
Oh and how would you remove the solder so you could redo the piece?
Ok so for this instance you can absolutely just add another jump loop in the right place. Having to redo the entire piece is worst case scenario, one step above trashing the whole piece. And your welcome! Happy to help!
Can I ask would this technique work on sea glass ?
I dont see why not! As long as the areas being wrapped, are ground! 🖤
Makenzie Hallie thank you for your reply , I’ve never done it before so wanted to start small , maybe sea glass key rings , I love what you made and look forward to more of your tutorials x
anytime!!!! And that's an awesome idea! it should work just fine I assume!! Here if you have any more questions!! 🖤
Makenzie Hallie Thank you , it will be a process of trial and error but I’m going to try it x
Agreed, and if wrapping the outer edges isnt working, you could always wrap a band right around the center of the sea glass piece and solder that! 🖤
Just started watching your videos . They are amazing and very informative. Can you also share the link for the chains too ?
Hello! Thank you so much for watching! I unfortunately do not buy them online anymore!!!
Can I ask where you got your tray with all the tiny finding apartments and squares at?
Are you referring to the clear plastic containers? If so you can find those at any craft store, all different sizes!
@@MakenzieHallie looked like a black Mat with the little tiny spaces for glass pieces or jewelry pieces that you were soldering on? One large mat?
What kind of chains do you use?
I unfortunately do not suggest chain or jump loops, so many vary greatly over time with quality and strength, I'm just not comfortable doing so! I'm sorry! Thank you so much for watching!
What is your operating temperature
Hello Makenzie, I have watched all your videos for tips on learning this Beautiful Art! When I started soldering, I accidently left my solder outside on the porch and it corroded to a dull rough finish. is there a way to clean this, or will it make a difference when using?
Absolutely. I would take 0000 or 000 steel wool and go over it. What you are seeing is basically metal mold... its from moisture. Honestly just hitting it with heat when you are working might just turn out fine depending on the severity of it. Test it.... But if not try the steel wool.
@@Jaim- thank you for the tip!
how often do you get glass splinters? i bought a huge stained glass kit (used) and i was cleaning off the glass and immediately got a sliver lol just wondering how often i should expect it!
AND THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!!!
And pro cup breaker lmao SAME
What work surface are you using to solder?
A soldering mat!
For heavens sake you make tapping look sooo easy!!! I'm about to slit my wrists trying to get it even! What's your trick?
Oops never mind just seen your video on foiling.
Lmfao 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 i am SHOCKED the UA-cam babysitters even allowed that comment. BUT your all set??!
I will not recommend any! I don't suggest specific chain or jump loops.
Nice
Hi Mackenzie, how much do you need to spend to get started with Stained Glass?
Hello! Well, it's hard to say because there are so many options for every single tool and machine. BUT for the bare basics I would say check out my "stained glass tools" videos, part 1 and 2! Definitely a few hundred dollars! 🖤🖤 Hope this helps!
@@MakenzieHallie Thank you! :))
Hello! I do not sell my patterns, as I sell my artwork! I will always encourage drawing your own stencils!! 🖤🖤 Thank you for your support!
I loved watching you create this but as a fellow XL nail queen, I have so much respect for you doing this with nails because I chopped mine before class 😂
I should’ve watched this video earlier….before the burn! 🤪
OH NO!!!!! LOL!!! Im sorry you got burned!!!
@@MakenzieHallie No worries. I bought some gloves and am working to improve my technique….which is a nice way to say keeping my hands outta the way of the dripping hot sh^t! 😁. But as you’ve said, I’m getting a bit used to the cuts and burns.
Definitely. Doesn't come as such a shock when it happens so much lol 😂
I don’t know how you do anything with those nails? 🙃
No different then no nails! Very much adjusted to them now many years with them. They are tools for sure!
I have multiple sun catchers and they never work //:
Hello! Where did you get them? And what do you mean they dont work? What are they supposed to do?! Thank you for watching!!
:9
i love her but i cant concentrate on the video because of her nails...=(
Hi! My name is Makenzie by the way, and im sorry nails are so distracting for you. 😔 I hope you learned something or was entertained at least! 🖤
I love your art but girl those fake nails are a bit 🤢
🙄 Did no one ever teach you manners? I'll help. Do you walk up to people on the street giving them unsolicited opinions on their appearance? No, because it's rude. So same thing here on the internet. Probably even more so since it has quite a cowardly aspect to it as well, being behind a screen. Don't give unsolicited opinions on a stranger's looks, ever. Just all-around inappropriate and rude.
@@MakenzieHallie Jesus you Americans take everything so serious!
🙄 yea nice try. Lol
Oh &....the space! My goodness does this craft take up space. Its not one you can tuck into a drawer....hahahaaha. ESP if you have pets and kids. Danger lurks....everywhere....hahahaa.
