Today I want to introduce you to my new daily driver, a 2021 Mazda CX-30 AWD Premium! In this video I'll show you guys the 3 main reasons I chose the CX-30.
    0:00 - What's up!
    0:31 - Reason 1: Minimalist, premium-ish interior
    2:41 - Reason 2: Driving experience cohesion
    4:02 - Reason 3: Handling (incl. GVC+ explanation)
    8:14 - Thanks for joining
The Mazda CX-30 competes with cars like the Honda CR-V / HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and VW Tiguan.

I absolutely love my 2024 Mazda CX-30, no regrets here! it is the perfect city car; great on gas, and a breeze to park. The handling is great. It feels stable, solid, and comfortable to drive. I am a tall guy, and have no issues with the interior space and comfortable seat of the CX-30.

Thank you for this feedback! I haven’t been to the dealership yet but I keep going back and forth between this and the CX 5 because I see all these negative comments about it feeling cramped. I am 5’ 8 but on the plus size. 😊

Just purechased it, it's absolutely amazing. Skipped the CX5 for this one, much more sportiness and less bulky, very good interior, easier to park... also in the test drive vs the cx5, it handles better, drives better... man this car surprised me

The handling is everything James said it is. In Texas we have a lot of Roundabouts. The CX-30 makes the roundabouts fun especially in Sport mode with TCS off. I would add another reason and say that Mazda did their homework on electronics. My only negative is the seat-belt alarm is too long.

    • @cityplanner3063
      @cityplanner3063 2 роки тому +1

Your roundabouts must be massive then. Here in Sydney you’re turning your wheel as quick as possible bc the roundabouts are so small. And they have speed cushions when entering them so no sports mode :(

Great to watch a review which talks about the important technical stuff rather than how many cup holders there are. I have had mine for going on a year and it was really interesting to learn why it corners so well.

Thanks for the review from an owner’s daily driver vantage point! I’m a year or so away from car shopping, but the CX30 is my #1 choice so far. Have a RAV4 now, but will be passing it along to my son when he finishes university. The CX30 is the right size for me, and it looks so sleek!

brilliant review of the CX-30. you're making me fall in love with mine all over again. finally understanding the machine on a deeper level, especially about the GVC plus feature. you've simplified it for the average car enthusiast. the CX-30 drives great. a budget Porsche Macan indeed. to add on, it has safety features on par with Volvo. Mazda did great on this one

@thesethingss, I'm happy to know you enjoyed the video and found it helpful in understanding some of the excellent engineering coming from Mazda. Despite its flaws, the CX-30 truly is a great product all around, and I agree with nearly every one of Mazda's decisions on where to put their money and development resources to deliver a great vehicle at its price.

I have a 2020 Mazda CX-30 premium, top trim with the cylinder deactivation and let me tell ya. Last week I bumped the tires psi to 40 from 36 and using adaptive cruise control often, coasting whenever possible and keeping the rpm’s as low as possible ( under 2000 rpm’s ). I got 421 miles on my last full tank of gasoline! Impressive indeed, averaged 33 miles per gallon with 80% highway driving & 20% city. On my previous gas tank I got 260 miles so those small tweaks made a huge difference. :) You can’t gun it down.

Hi, fantastic review! I live in New Zealand, and have recently bought a CX 30. Our version is the 2 L X version -normally aspirated and mild hybrid. Fantastic car so far -just love it. I am intrigued with your comparison to the Porsche Macan, although I have never driven one. I agree, the handling is superb as well as the finish in the car. We are fortunate enough to own a CX5 as well from 2017. No comparison between the two cars.

Hi James. Thanks for the review! I'm now the proud owner of a 2021 CX-30 Premium as well (Machine Metal Gray) and I am IN LOVE with it. It fits me perfectly. I live in Queens, NY, so I didn't REALLY need a car, but at age 67, post pandemic, I really felt the need for something that could free my spirit. This did the trick, and then some. It has opened up a whole new world.

@@JamesPlaysWithCars I hope it too. I´m driving now the CX-5 from 2017. 2.2L Diesel with AWD and GVC also with 6MT. The 6MT from the new CX_30 should be the Best from all Mazdas. The first 5 steps are shorter and the 6th Gear is like an overdrive. So it should go better than the previous models of the CX-30 from 2020.

I purchased a 2022 CX-30 AWD Carbon Edition 6-AT 3-4 weeks ago & loving it so far. No defects or issues to be found, & it's a noticeably better vehicle than my 2020 TNGA Japan-Built Corolla SE Sedan 6-MT was in terms of build quality, comfort, interior design, overall driving/riding dynamics, etc. Only a 6-MT transmission option could have made my CX-30 more of an improvement. The regular 2.5L Skyactiv engine is also fine for all my driving needs, so no need for a "street racing" turbo engine or the eventual problems they bring. I have found that I prefer Sports-Mode for around town driving (speeds less than 50-55 MPH) due to better engine feedback/feel & superior innate engine braking when approaching red lights & such, since the vehicle tends to stay in a lower-gear & higher RPM band longer at any given speed interval. Normal-Mode is better for extended highway/expressway driving (55+ MPH) though. Sports-Mode basically turns the 6-AT into a 5-AT, more or less. My 2 cents. I did have to do a few personal mods though, to get the vehicle completely looking the way that I wanted it, considering the thick black cladding & black factory wheels, namely blacking out the chrome front grill & side-window trim, & the small recessed area on lower hatch where license plate mounts. Looks much better! Have to embrace the black vs paint contrast on the CX-30 & go all in to unify & spruce-up the design/look.

I purchased a CPO 2020 preferred in deep crystal blue mica and greige interior with 28k miles in February. It looks great if I say so myself.
Fuel economy is at 30.7 mpg in cold weather (20-30 F) 20% city, 80% highway. I expect 32-34 mpg in warmer weather.
The rear seats are small but at 5’9” I wouldn’t mind sitting behind myself. The Bose sounds clear and full and using the dial to navigate Apple CarPlay is effortless.
My only gripe is the 10 gallons of usable fuel. That’s the same range as an EV lol.
Overall, it’s a nice subcompact SUV among the likes of the Corolla Cross/HRV/Trax/Kona/Crosstrek/UX/ecosport/etc.

Hi Keith, thanks for your kind words!
I haven't driven the Kona yet, but I chose the CX-30 for its looks and because Mazdas tend to have fun driving dynamics for their class.
However, I have long been intrigued by the Kona EV, and if one becomes available on Turo in my area I would be inclined to try it out.

Hi James! Great review! Thanks for taking the time to break things down based on your owner's perspective. I really like this car and really liked the cx-3, but the cx-3 was just too tiny. I test drove one several times and had it a larger engine I might have bought one. It was just so much fun to drive but tons of road noise came into the cabin also which was a considerable disappoinent.
Have you by chance looked at the cx-50? Would it appeal to you given your experience with the cx-30? I like the entertaining way smaller cars drive, but I'm not sure if the cx-50 would dilute the entertainment value of the drive itself given it is larger. I have not encountered one on a dealer's lot yet in my area, but perhaps eventually will.

    • @JamesPlaysWithCars
      @JamesPlaysWithCars  Рік тому +2

Hi Shane! I have not yet driven a CX-50, so I'm not sure how it would drive. However, I can offer a couple thoughts to consider:
      1) Mazda's naturally aspirated inline 4 feels jussttt adequate in the CX-30, especially now that all of them are AWD (the FWD models from years past felt a little peppier). I expect that the CX-50, with its 400 lbs of additional curb weight, could feel a little sluggish with that engine. So, if you're interested in CX-50, definitely consider the turbo (and the hybrid, if/when it comes out).
      2) The fact that CX-50 is larger doesn't necessarily mean it will drive worse than CX-30, so it's worth test driving, IMO. I believe this because the CX-5 in some ways drives better than CX-30--as I recall, the CX-5's throttle response seems more well-calibrated and predictable, and the handling and steering feel basically just as good. CX-50 supposedly has stiffer suspension, so it may handle just as athletically as the CX-30 at the cost of a bit of ride quality.
Hope that helps! Let me know your thoughts if you do end up test driving a CX-50.

However, I got accustomed to the rotary control knob and buttons really quickly, since they are closely modeled on the BMW iDrive systems of about 2007-2010. If you have experience with BMW iDrive or similar systems, the Mazda system should be easy to learn. Hope that helps!

Once I got it off there was still a reflection of the projection unit in the windshield. Then I did more digging and people are putting a cloth over it. Also, every time you get in the vehicle you have to turn it off ...I love everything else about the premium except the reflection that, to me, is a huge design flaw ..reflection of anything in the windshield seems like a no no ...thoughts?

Great video. I am following you from Greece 🇬🇷 ! I am about to order a new 2024 version, the 2 litre e-skyactive x engine producing 186hp 240 torque with manual gearbox which I tested and it is a masterpiece.
I would like to ask you, in case you might know, this GCV or GVC+ is a standard to either FWD & AWD models or it comes only with the AWD ? ...because it looks quite good, it makes a difference, and I am thinking to go for the FWD model... we do not have snow or too much rain here, neither I go off roading. .. so why to get the AWD and not save 3 thousand euro + some extra consumption...
    Thanks in advance !
    Best Regards

Of course, the rear passenger size and cargo of CX-5 is much better than CX-30 which is the important part to make me hesitate, but I like awesome interior of CX-30. Is there any different in driving sense? What do you think main difference between CX-30 vs CX-5 in both select trim.
And if you consider either CX-30 vs Crosstrek, mind I ask you which one is better and why?

Hi H H, the CX-30 Select should be more nimble and satisfying to drive than the CX-5 Select and Crosstrek. If you are open to a hatchback body style and prioritize driving experience, maybe consider Mazda3 hatch, which is nearly identical in interior volume to the CX-30 but drives even more sharply.

Thanks! I would also guess that the effect on brake wear is minor. As for AWD, Dave Coleman doesn’t say that GVC+ and AWD involve shifting torque around, but rather the car decouples the front and rear wheels at certain times to make the car feel more natural around corners.

However, according to the Mazda USA configurator, Bose is now only available on Turbo Premium and Turbo Premium Plus. In past model years, Bose was available on the non-turbo Premium (like my 2021) and, if I recall correctly, even the Preferred.

    • @JamesPlaysWithCars

Hi TheMonicagal, I got AWD because I liked the heavier, more planted feeling steering. I also don't plan to keep the car for long (I generally keep cars for only 20-30k miles before selling), so the potential unreliability of AWD is not an issue.
Here's my take: Go for FWD if you want the car to feel a bit more light/sprightly, to save a bit on fuel, and to have more reliability in the long term. Get AWD if you want the traction (e.g., for dirt trails or snow), or want to have that heavier, more planted feel.

Hi Monicagal--yes, mine is black, and yes, it gets dirty quickly. In my experience, dark blue and black cars are the hardest to keep clean, because they contrast with the light tan color of dust. White is easier to keep clean than black or dark blue, but is harder than gray or silver.
I got black because I wanted the wheel arches to blend in, and because at the time I already had a Machine Gray MX-5 Miata, and wanted the cars to be different colors. I'm still pretty happy with the choice of black because it looks so classy when clean, but it does take more maintenance!

I think the Mazda3 hatch is objectively a better vehicle than the CX-30 for most people, since it gives you approximately the same amount of space but with noticeably better handling and efficiency. Also, the non-turbo engine is probably better suited to the more efficient hatch (it strains a bit more in the heavier/less aerodynamic CUV).
I picked the CX-30 simply because the styling looked better to my eyes. Another reason you might pick the CX-30 is if you like to sit a bit higher off the road or need the ground clearance to go into, say, snowy places.
My CX-30 is made in Mexico, but so far there have been no defects except for creaky weather stripping in the driver's door. If you do plan to keep the car for a long time, I'd try to find a 3 made in Japan for the peace of mind.

In terms of driving experience, the difference is actually quite small--I drove a rental CX-5 in Utah and was very impressed at how nimble/intuitive the driving experience was... to me it's just about as fun to drive as the smaller CX-30. Hi Glen, the Turbo is more "effortless acceleration" than "zip zip", so if that fits what you're looking for, then Turbo could be a great choice. I also find that the auto transmission is a better fit for the turbo's plentiful torque. In the non-turbo, the transmission needs to hunt gears more often, which can be annoying if you expect responsive performance.
On the other hand, if you're OK with more sedate acceleration and want more range out of the CX-30's fairly small fuel tank, the non-turbo could be the better version for you.
