- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The Mazda CX-30 is not an off-roader, but in this video we take this new model into the mud, sand, and rocks. Will it hold up or are we going to end up stuck? This car competes with vehicles like the Jeep Renegade and Subaru Crosstrek, both of which have some capability. How does this car stack up?

Great review
Tft
really? 4 inches of clearance, let's take it off road!!!
Yeah, not so much.
Mazda is pining their hopes & dreams on becoming a Japanese version of Audi & Bmw. I hope they can do it with Japanese reliability.
So...like Lexus or Infiniti?
L T yes but Mazda prices.
@@phillm156 Will never be at Mazda prices if they succeed. Would be very interesting to see the change, however.
L T they are doing great. if only they would put the 2.5 turbo into the CX30!! I’m in.
Mazda is Japanese Alfa Romeo especially since the first launch of Kodo design in Italy few years ago
As a Mazda tech, all these cars are super reliable. I’m old school and like American cars and drive them but after working on these I’m slowly changing my mind towards these. They just don’t break down. Simple interiors means less to break and user friendly.
What about carbon buildup? I've heard Mazda GDI have that problem
@@jfrodr 100,000 on my Sky 6 (2014) zero issues with carbon build up. It's not an issue with these engines. It seems to be more of a German GDI issue.
In 20 years of driving the Mazda 6 I purchased Dec 2013 brand new has been the single most reliable vehicle I've ever had. Regular maintenance only. The one brake caliper issue I had was covered by a recall and cost me $0. We bought a 2018 CX-5 as a result last year. I hope they keep up the quality for many years to come.
@@jfrodr 1st gen cx-5 user, i never expereienced problems in my engine. I think mazda is one of many gdi engine that never has problems.
Good to know. 2015 Mazda 3 's grand touring. It's been an excellent car so far. Thanks for sharing your honest experience
So... no cvt. Drives great. Looks amazing. And has some nice comfort features mazda is killing it these days
Bigtime feminine looking SUV. Perfect for soccer moms!
@@James-il3tq or just people who like good design... why does something have to be an ugly box with some ruggedness to appeal to and be "manly" ? and lets be honest most people don't use suvs for anything manly- most men use them for the same thing the women do moving kids and groceries around and going to work
@@James-il3tq it's a small sport SUV
@@James-il3tq sounds like someone who can't afford one lol
Mazda has kept their prices fairly reasonable and they don’t use garbage CVTs 👍
Ryan Ryan and the Auto transmission is among the best. Very smart, knows exactly what you are doing and responds accordingly immediately. The only downside, they are only 6 speed.
@@p0u74n I have a cx3. My ONLY complaint is I wish 6th gear was a little bit lower... Engine seems to rev on the interstate more than I would like
CaptainAuto yup very true.
@@Montana270 Conversely my Mazda 6 turns 1500rpm @ 50, which runs a nice 2100rpm @ 70. The Mazdas with the 2.5 are geared much taller. The CX-5 runs about 2250 @ 70.
Lucas Harris I had 14 Mazda3 2.5, 6th gear at 115 mph would only rev 3000 rmp .... that engine barely reved more than 2k at daily drives.
Got a premium CX30 for my wife about 2 months ago and it, without question, has the BEST stock stereo I have ever heard. The imaging from the speaker position is spectacular.
My 2005 mazda3 still has the best audio positioning of any vehicle I've driven, glad to see they've kept it up
I actually prefer not to have touch screens in my cars. They are a complete nightmare to keep clear where I live.
It's laughable how stubborn people are in support of touchscreens. TSs are only workable if roads are smooth. But, most roads in real life aren't and you end up bumping into the wrong selections and taking at least twice as long to make the right ones. It's like trying to interact with the seat-back TVs on an airplane during turbulence. I mean, would you want your pilot to be diddling with his screen instead of focusing getting you to your destination safely?? Common sense is uncommon.
fmonk not to mention having to have a microfiber cloth on hand evrry time you tap the screen, it gets disgusting and dirty, and most systems are just too laggy, glad mazda is staying away from the trends
And touch screens are dangerous. I'm personally a huge fan of the infotainment in my 3
This is the rightful CX--3, while the current one should be called the CX-2 as it is based on the Mazda2 platform.
You mean the Toyota Yaris? Lol.
@@venuesurfamerica9840 Haha... ya.. LOL!
That nomenclature would make a lot of sense. I suspect that when the CX-3 was designed there was no thought of a CX-30. The Chinese market only CX-4 really threw a cat among the pigeons. I think they perhaps should have called the CX-4 the CX-6 as it seems to be CX-5 based only a bit larger and much better looking. It’s also a bit odd they didn’t release the CX-4 in other markets. I think it would have sold quite well. One would hope Mazda will sort this out but I think they’ve created a bit of a marketing problem for themselves.
The thicker cladding should have been offered on a more "Off Road" option package and not on the CX30 full model line😞
Yes but it also helps protect from dings in parking lots.
People are becoming animals when it comes to parking tight and then swinging their doors open against your car.
I agree it does take away from the lux look you get with that sexy styling.
yeah you can get the cx 3 then
I just traded in my '17 CX5 for a 4Runner. Loving the runner to death, but man do I miss that Mazda interior. Also, that 2.5L engine isn't really slow at all. You guys are just used to driving so many cars with more power that it just no longer feels fast by comparison.
And count yourselves lucky! In the UK you can only get a 2.0 litre engine!
i have these in 2021 turbo , in sport mode just flies and you dont even feel it, love it
2:24 would have been a good idea to have the windows closed lol
ΝΟΜΛ ikr
Yeah I was hoping for that as well
Yeah TFL missed the point entirely
Like headbangers care if you can hear the noise or not.
It's very apparent that Mazda was very detail oriented in the design of this vehicle. So I doubt that the "overlap" is a design or production issue. Looking at it leads me to believe it was intended to mitigate wind noise. It may be evidence of Mazda's bent on thinking outside of the box?
I like your review style! Haven't owned a Mazda in many years, but would consider this one. Awesome interior details.
Your presentation skills are improving👍
Its Infotainment is nothing wrong. Much easier to use than ones on Lexus.
Just to add that not all trims come with the brown accent leather on the dash/doors, etc. The Premium package come with the brown but the Preferred Trim comes with Navy Blue surfaces.
Thanks for this review Tommy. I've owned 2 Mazda 3's and found they were a very nice ride on a budget.
Thank you Tommy, enjoy your informational and entertaining reviews
Ive been saying since the last gen Mazda 3 that their hatch backed cars look like Ferrari FFs, I was so glad to hear someone else make the same relation. Keep it up guys!
Just bought this car and I love the knob. I haven't seen any channels mention is also analog. Anyway, it's nicer, and no fingerprints on the screen!
Love your reviews Tommy
Just picked up my own Select trim CX 30 a week ago! Comfortable ride, stylish interior and exterior, respectable MPG, and super fun to drive. No regrets especially for the price. AWD in central New York is essential!
It's tricky to get a good MPG from cx-30, yes it's possible but not fun at all to drive in such low saving mode...
What a nice looking suv!! very beautiful disigns from mazda lately! thanks for this test.
Love the music they were playing and the car too of course.
Well done, great review!
The fender/door "quirk" is for reducing wind noise.
The Audi '90-'91 B3 CQ Coupe Quattro had a similar thing.
This is just a wild guess, but I think that panel discordance is functional, probably diverting air from the mirrors to reduce drag and /or noise.
I really don't mind it, I'm generally anti-crossover but this one manages to be pretty and seems to have decent dynamics, I'm impressed.
That would be my guess as well. That is a difficult area so they have probably done that to manage the airflow around the side mirrors.
My cx5 has something similar as well
Dave Coleman again lol we see him everywhere
I love my Mothers 2014 cx5. Not the best offrod but great in the snow and great fun to drive
Good morning Tommy great video⭐⭐⭐⭐nice car☺
2:00 With the driver's window down, yes we can hear it❗️🤣
12:30 That "thigh support" looks to be nothing special, typical tilt-up present in many older vehicles. 🤓
Yep, 88 Chevrolet Corsica had a tipper knob at right side forward. Nice when eating miles up on a long haul.
Great to see a new vehicle from Mazda and its upcoming EV the MX-30 with the same naming scheme. Will be interesting to see where this new lineup goes in the coming years as the CX-3 phases out. Way to go Mazda and great review! 👍
Ive already found offroad tires for mine with steel wheels. I live on the coast and i kayak so a lot of sand and loose gravel. This vechical is gonna be amazing.
How's that been going?
thanks for this review
I just bought the 2021 CX 30 turbo and it is amazing..
I have a 2019 Mazda3 hatch and love it! Am thinking about getting this little stilted CX30 in the future. Wish they offered red leather like my hatch has though.
Super!! me encanto la canción . Saludos desde Puerto Rico.
That "perfect for the smartphone" will be not so perfect to use the knob. And using that knob is my favorite activity
We have a 2009 Mazda 3 GT Hatch. 121k kms. No rust, engine runs like new. Original HIDs, handles great. The CX30 Turbo will be its replacement.
Usually the fender to the door are placed like this to prevent any wind noise coming from a corner at high speeds. If you reajust every panel corner like this you lose a lot of noise coming inside
I absolutely love it! Great car
Hey, Im pretty sure the music test was supposed to be done with the window UP. Ofcourse outsiders can hear your music with the window down. Other than that good video
Now I understand why Mazda put that thick plastic cladding for mild off roading adventure. I don't mind that at all it looks OK for me. I would prefer this CUV over the UX200 or the VW T-Rock.
3 years in on my '21 and this vehicle is just perfect simplicity. You get reliable performance from the hardware, a simple quality interior and a neat body design that reminds me of a cuttlefish lol
My better half has this Mazda. She was coming off of her third Infinity (which was silly to be paying for during the lockdowns). Three years in with the CX-30, no major complaints. As she still works from home, I tend to commute in it (vs my truck). The rear hatch is small...but its a small car. Fit and finish are good. It is comfortable. It hauls home my regular trips from Costco. The knobs and buttons (interface) are good and much preferred.
Very detailed review, please review the Subaru Legacy.
You’re one of the best reviewer’s on UA-cam keep up the deep details
Great review, and thanks for talking to Dave Coleman about the AWD system.
I love that you test the cars in true off-road conditions! Driving off road, by the way, what I would really like on these cars, is a button that says "AWD off". Yes, "AWD-off" - because when you're driving into a narrow road in deep snow, there is a real risk of getting very stuck, having to call a friend (or a rescue chap, with the embarresing question about what on earth you are doing here). If you start off with only two driving wheels, at least you get a good warning.
Technically, this should be no problem, shouldn't it? Possibly, only available below a certain speed.
Stunning indeed.
I have one and I love it !!! Wait till you drive it at night and check out the head lighting system. Completely awesome!!!
I NEED THIS CAR!!!
like very, quiet, good in the snow, good for freeway good for one or two, minus mpg and very stiff suspension
Great review, someone should see how easy it is to clean it afterward in the door jambs and all ither openings.
First time Mazda owner here, having just purchased the 2022 CX-30 AWD Carbon Edition. I wasn't very happy with my 2020 TNGA Toyota Corolla SE Sedan after 2.5 years of ownership, so I traded it in for my new CX-30, & couldn't be happier. Also a great time to trade a car in, as I received just as much trade value on my used Corolla as what it was priced at brand new back in late 2019. Win-Win!
We just bought a 2022 CX-30 Carbon Edition this past week after driving a 2016 Mazda6. Mazda continues to surprise and exceed expectations with their designs and build quality. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we do.
The fender ‘wing’ shapes the air so it breaks around the side-mirror. Look at a current gen 4-Runner’s headlight lens…there’s a ‘growth’ on the outer edge that also spoils the airflow around the mirror structure. I love our ‘22 Turbo fully loaded red rocket…the precious few times I get to take it. My 4Runner is a great trick that does what I need it to without fail, and looks great. In the CX, I have a hard time minding the speed limit as the car handles so surgically, and the powertrain is dangerously good.
Good review.
16:31 the led indicators actually fade out to mimic old style bulbs! That's a wonderful touch I wonder if the Mazda3 does that too?
8 months late to this but the 3 also does this!
I truly LOVE my special edition turbo cx-30!
this is very good.
Dave Coleman , Thank you for all the information you provide. Im about to own my third Mazda , Ive had a 6 , 7 and now a 30. My dealer is forcing the black one on me since there is no inventory.
Mazda Seats are Great!
Always have! Even the passenger seat is better than most all of the Nissan/Toyota ilk!
Ole Zach...keeping the faith!
The awd systems are getting better in all these cars. The issue is that they have so little travel it kinda kills any potential they had with overreliance on the systems
U r right, THAT triple point of 3 panels should meet.
It looks as if the fender has been incorrectly positioned.
However, when you see how far away the door panel roll is you start to think it’s a deliberate by design.
I hate it, and I rarely use THAT word.
We just purchased a Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback AWD. Even though it has some obvious differences, as a lifelong Honda and Acura owner (27 years) I would say that Mazda's fit and finish rivals Honda's from the 1990s and 2000s which is amazing. The paint is flawless, no orange peel, the car feels super tight and the cabin well laid out. I do agree with Tommy that the fender line could have been joined better however I would like to hear Mazda's reasoning on it :). Oh and yes, the audio is that good!
Keith Charette less wind noise enters the cabin is the reason
I really like the lines of that compared to the rest of Mazda's CUVs.
Nice video guys. Is there a chance to get some clarity on "Off Road Traction Assist" vs the previous "TCS Off" feature in the context of Mazda AWD SUVs? I'm a little bit confused as to where the differences between the 2 modes of tackling traction on AWD platforms are.
I was so impressed with the CX-30, I purchased a Crosstrek Sport
I wanted to like the Crosstrek, but for me (6'0"), the seats were awful, while the CX-30 seats are ok. And the Crosstreak auto trans is horrid. And the engine stop at lights so when you press the accelerator you have a 1 sec delay while the engine starts. Close Subaru, but no cigar. Now, the BRZ/86, there's another story!
RE: the fender/door/a-pillar thing - I read elsewhere that Mazda reworked a-pillars on the 6 to address wind noise. Could be an air deflection trick.
Looks like an Alfa Romeo Crossover Concept... Looks good
We just bought one! 😄👍
My CX30 got stuck in maybe 15 inches of water during a flash flood caused by Hurricane Ida. Insurance just totaled it. I enjoyed her for the month I had it 🙃
Tommy, that gap is driving me crazy too. I agree with you on the looks too. Best application of Mazda current design (is it Kodo design, they call it?)
Its good to see that these designers are making an effort for upright posture. 90 percent of new vehicles induce horrible posture with their forward-tilted head restraints. The regulations are pretty restrictive and from my research, most whiplash testing was performed with dummies hunched forward (so the head is about 5 inches away from the restraint).
There has to be more adjustability to accommodate different body types.
Ik, i had to bent non adjustable headrests backward with sledge hammer in vise because i sit almost upright and not leaning my backrest 30° back...I also heard it was some regulation after crash tests, but how in the earth this goes through production cars.chapmanchoice.com/stock/clvd/r9930-A.jpg with nobody complaining is beyond me
I test drove one today and immediately changed my mind about getting one. Could not get comfortable in the seat. I am very tall and had plenty of legroom and headroom, but the seat was not comfortable at all, and I was ready to get out of it after the test drive. And the doors creaked and rattled.
Let's go off roading!
Street tires: Am I a joke to you??
Awesome one from Mazda auto Amazing 😉 I really like a Engine power as same as Toyota RAV4
8:48 all of the sudden "at number 6" 🤣 either I'm not paying attention or this countdown is lost
That's unfortunate the Turbo Mazda 3 will not have the trail mode button. I could see that being very useful in the winter on un-plowed roads.
Nice review Tommy. Nice car Mazda. But I don't agree with Mazda's insistence on the rotary knob for MMI. There should be an option to touch the screen. Mazda suggesting that the knob's tactile input is "better even if it's harder to uses" (9:12) makes no sense. Harder to use = longer time distracted = less safe. With the optional touch screen, the user can decide which input is most direct (for the given task). You still look at the screen while operating the knob.
The point about people outside the car not being able to hear what's playing on the studio supplies to when the windows are rolled up 🙄. When the speakers are mounted in the door, the door acts like a soundbox to magnify the sound (ever pulled up to someone at the light and roll down your windows to hear the whole conversation of the driver next to you on his/her connected phone? It's quite hilarious).
This is definitely on the shortlist for my daughter's first vehicle with Hyundai Tuscon and Elantra GT
I wonder if you can bolt on the suspension to a 3 and have a lifted 3.
BE much simpler to just trade.....Paul
I am convinced that this is one of a great luxury car by Mazda that can go off-roading.
I’m trying to decide between the Mazda CX-30 premium too package vs. Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with the premium package including AC ventilated seats, HUD display, folding mirrors. Can’t decide because the interior of the 30 looks SO GOOD and that 8.8 inch screen infotainment is 👍🏼. But the CX-5 offers more space, heated steering wheel, ventilated seats... just not as updated interior design and 7 inch screen 😔 what should I do?
I remember there was an article comparing the drive train between CX-3 and CX-5. The main different is; to the best of my memory, CX-3 does not have limited slip differential between the front and rear axles like CX-5. Does CX-30 have it?
Amazing video as usual. This guy gives me HARRISON WELLS vibes. Anyone?
16:53 Why Tommy, I really can’t unsee it. 😆
Stop the presses! Looks like a panel gap! :)
This guy is good.
Love when ppl comment on the acceloration as if any in the class have more horsepower. Fyi cx30 has the most power of all in the class.
When Tommy does math, sunglasses appear on his head lol
I didn't even hear a "bamf!" :D
the brakes are grabbing strong on the off-road setting. According to one of the reviews, this puts lots of strain on the mechanical systems. Some say that it should work much smoother.
I would love to read opinion from people who know what their writing about :)
A Mazda coupe like suv like the Mercedes glc would look so good on their new redesign
And if you want more power.
Skyactive X.
As it has more torque down low.
In America they only get the 2.5 skyactiv. in Europe we got the 2.0 2.0x 2.2g , and my own 1.8 diesel, wich is great for Portugal cheap diesel. The car is great, best car i ever had.
Mr. Dave Coleman. The man, the myth, the legend. The discoverer of “The Dave Point”.
Doesn't that swooping corned on the hood have anything to do with shaping the air around the side mirrors for some sort of improved aerodynamics?
This provides great insight into the invisible but impactful design decisions Mazda makes that might just win me over from Toyota or Hyundai...and i thought it was important to see it’s light off road capabilities too.
I have to correct you! In North America the CX30 comes in a 2.0L in the GX base trim and the GS and GT comes with the 2.5L
For some reason, they think North America = USA. You're referring to Canada spec
On previous Mazda models there was a sensitivity setting to adjust the LKA, it must have been dropped in leu of handling...
I’ve seen so many muddy Cx-5s. I think this is a great addition.
