Arnheid is such a tragic character because she lacked so much agency. She sort of embodied the role women had at that time, especially when she mentioned that a woman could do nothing to stop a man's wish. It summed her life up perfectly, she had literally no control over anything in her life and due to the greed of men she lost everything. Every action she had to endure was due the greed of men and had no say. She was fucked from the start and was used only for her body (apart from only her husband who genuinely seemed to care about her). That scene where the guard threatened to rape her was seriously fucked up, and that's some of milder shit that happens to her.
Just got done watching the latest episode where Arnheid gets beaten by Ketil and the amount of people saying they understand why he beat her and glad she “finally” facing consequences literally hurts. She’s a *slave* she really had no choice in this intimate relationship with Ketil. He might have been in love with her but at the end of the day she was his property. All she’s really known is hurt but is always optimistic about the future regardless. Did Ketil get the rug pulled from under his feet? Yes but that was because his son can’t help but look for conflict and he was being plotted against aswell. He unloaded on to her completely defenseless. He never really was a good man. Ketil never was gonna free her unless it was death do them part.
A lot of the people only viewing Vinland Saga through the anime are admittedly very fucking stupid lmao. Some of the worst takes I've ever seen from this series have come from anime-onlies. That's not to say they're all like that, and that's also not to say that manga readers are all super intelligent (I've seen some very stupid manga takes too), but the absolute worst opinions I've ever heard about this series are the people watching it for the first time as the episodes release. Arnheid is a person with desires like everybody else. Just because she was given "special treatment" doesn't mean she was any less a slave than anyone else. In fact, she had it the worst BECAUSE of her special treatment, she would never be allowed to leave and buy her own freedom like everyone else. She was robbed of her choice the moment she was brought to the farm, and her fate was sealed. She didn't deserve any of what happened to her, and nobody could convince me otherwise.
He was kinder than the average slave owner but ketil was not a good person or compasioned for the start ,he was just cowardly and greedy . Anrheid never get to decide for herself ,she was forced to be ketils concubine because he will force her anyway even if she refuse and nobody will help her after all she was his property . Inwas surprised that there were people who side with ketill
Thorfinn and Einar have an amazing bond. Einar showed Thorfinn that he can change and taught him how to grow crops, while Thorfinn made sure Einar didn’t seek revenge like his past self.
What is also fantastic about Arnheid is how emotionally complex she is. She initially believes Gardar to be changed , a completely different person now threatening her and even accuses him for being the cause of their child's loss. But it is partly a facade and we learn later that she secretly had hope that he would be normal and they could turn back to their old life. When she meets Gardar and he apologises for what she previously accused him for she breaks down. The mannerism that she does then , pulling her hands towards her head , is so genuine and shows so much. Guilt because she doubted and was about to abandon him , happiness that he is who she remembered , fear and worry about her child and the situation she currently is in since she realises she cannot bring herself to abandon Gardar now. Did she actually wish for Gardar to be just a crazed man and a bad memory? I don't actually think she heard Thorfinn's speech sadly.
Wow, nice breakdown, I didn't think of it quite like that but I like it. Its complex and that why we love her. She didn't wait for the storm to pass and it was her undoing. Is ignorance bliss? Or should she have gone anyway. Its a really tough choice and I think it feels like she is being really stupid going to tend his wounds, because what good would come of it. But its what makes this so tragic, if the guard wasn't enchanted by her, or Snake was more vigilant, or etc. you get the point. Thats what makes it hurt. Instead of letting the storm pass, it turned out to be the perfect storm for her demise. Yeah, I don't think she heard him either. It makes it more tragic, since if she did hear him she may have found the will to keep going. Argh. Now I'm sad again :'(
I don't think Thorfinn would have been able to change without such a loyal and kind-hearted friend as Einar. People often underrate him, but he deserves the world. Even with his family being killed by warriors, he accepts Thorfinn's past and helps him become a better person. Only love for my boy Einar
Her fate sums up the series, and became the motivator for the main characters. It helped Thorfinn understood what his father was talking about. Beyond all of the theme, the speech is always emotional to me. All of the sorrow, violence, death preceding that moment cumulated in her. I knew that speech was coming when that chapter was released, but I didn't expect to be so emotional hearing him comfort her. It was so simple, succinctly impart the message of the entire comic. If the animated series mess this up, it might as well not be made.
I saw it in a similar light. Arnheid was someone, as you said, who always tried to make the best of the situation. However not just once but twice has she had to learn that being a nice person and making the best of the situation isn't enough to stay alive in this world. War completely demolished her previous life with Gardar, and slavery demolished any hope of happiness she could have had with her new child and her old husband. So it makes sense that she'd refuse Einar as in her dying moments all she can think of is how her way of trying to survive was wrong and that there's nothing more for her. That's the meaning, I feel, Thors and Thorfin's Vinland speech has. It's to remind someone with nothing left to live for that their way of living wasn't wrong and that there is still one place where they can live as they were. A place where war and slavery doesn't exist is a place where being a good person and making the best of the situation is just enough to survive. A world where you don't need to become the very monster you struggle against just to have a fighting chance is a peaceful world. The speech in both cases, given to a dying struggler is meant to let them know that there is still one more fight left for them after death, a fight where their way of thinking will surely lead them to peace. Vinland's message isn't terribly complex but it's necessary I feel and everything we see in both Slave arc and Baltic Sea War, as well as bits in prologue, serves to show that altruism does have its place even in a world that's uncaring and ambiguous, made even realer by the historical setting. It's a simple message for sure, but that doesn't make it any less thoughtful or emotional.
I just finished season 2 of the anime the other day and I'm not ashamed to admit the final phase of Arnheid's arc destroyed me. She is by far one of the most tragic characters ever written. Enslaved through no fault of her own because the men of her village were greedy, stupid and left their homes and families defenseless in search of loot, forced into her master's bed because he is attracted to her, made to see how much of a feral beast her husband had turned into during his enslavement and then beaten to death because she tried to escape with him. And she was one of the warmest, kindest people you could ever imagine and absolutely deserved none of it.
The scene in which Thorfinn gives the Vinland speech to Arnheid and the question of "What is there to live for" really hit me, it really showed Thorfinn's peak character development here, finally understanding Thors' beliefs as a pacifist. For a second, I saw Guts in Einar, the same way I saw him in pre 54 Thorfinn, and the scene where he was stopped by Thorfinn was perfect for me as it genuinely shows off the peak story telling, and the part where they swore to colonize Vinland, man, it was enough to cement Vinland Saga as my second most favourite manga of all time.

@@KyleEntertainment I think my fundamental misunderstanding of Askeladd's character prevents me from understanding him. @Tane Rameka while I would say that Thorfinn's development is among the best in manga (I love that he is aiming for a complete rejection of violence, something that Berserk will hardly obtain, for example) but overall I think Guts is better as character, and generally that Berserk is much better written than Vinland Saga. Now I must say that I find Yukimura's writing disappointing... Despite having enormous potential with its characters, and top tier arcs, it's just so naive these days and I feel like Yukimura doesn't really care to develop relationships in his manga, which is a shame. I have no idea why Thorfinn and Gudrid are together and for example, Thorfinn and Einar are supposed to be best friends I guess but beyond Farmland and the Hunter and Hunted miniarc they hardly have any remarkable interaction at all beside "yes bro" or something like that. I think that Yukimura's writing is slowly killing Vinland Saga, sadly.
Both know how to portray their characters like actual human beings with emotional complexity. Viland Saga, however, also manages to make its story feel realistic in a way that Berserk doesn't try because it's a dark fantasy story. I think one aspect I prefer in Vinland Saga is its commitment to the idea of the value on non-violence and how it explores the challenges of living as a pacifist in a world where violence is common.
