  • Lots of people don't seem to think Hild is as cool as I do...
    ...So, here are some of my reasons for liking her as much as I do. If you already like Hild, well I hope that you like her even more now. She, while currently a little stagnant, has quite a bit of depth to her and hopefully in the coming years Yukimura does her justice. Her arc has been building for the last 50 chapters!
    Hope you enjoy this Hild analysis! Sorry it took so long. Vinland Saga is cool... very cool.

    One huge difference between Teen Thorfinn and Hild is that Hild did not throw away her morality.
    Teen Thorfinn would often have a "not my problem" attitude while Hild is constantly seen helping
    people. Has Hild even killed anyone? That right there is a tellling difference.

    • @JarkeyBacon

      Very true. It also adds more tension to Thorfinn since this is his chance to end the cycle here and now. He knows to the pain of killing people, how they constantly haunts him. He wouldn't want Hild to experience that too.

      Yep. Which makes sense since 1. Thorfinn lost Thors and began his revenge quest at age 6, a much younger and more impressionable age than Hild’s 13. 2. Hold was raised by a tough but decent person who only advised her on how to survive. Thorfinn wasn’t really raised by anyone but he grew up in an environment where murder is completely normal and an almost daily occurrence, and all of his role models were horrendous people.
      It also works as Thorfinn trying to prevent Hild from becoming a legitimately awful person like he was, since she’s not at a point where she needs to redeem herself like he does.

    One thing I think is interesting is that Hild's father implies during the flashback that he, like Thors, was killed by Askeladd on the orders of Floki as part of his big stupid scheme, and part of me wonders what would've happened if she'd also learned that detail like Thorfinn did, and how that'd affect her outlook on the climax of the Jomsborg war. It would've been interesting to see her grapple with a thirst for vengeance that was split in two directions between two targets, one of whom was about to kill the other for the exact same reason, and it could then have Baldur's intervention be a defining moment of change for her too, with a focus on how it makes her reevaluate everything. Though in fairness I am biased because Baldur is a really underrated character and I wish that moment was integral to more character arcs than just Thorfinn

I'm really looking forward to what Yukimura will do with her character, it would be so nice to see her take off the bandana when the appropriate time comes for it, I believe she initially started wearing it so her hair didn't get in the way of her eyes and ears (to hunt more effectively of course)

    My main caveat with Hilde is that she came out of the blue and she felt like something Yukimura though later than planned beforehand, hence she doesn't have any real interactions with the planned plot, I would have loved if the scene with Thorfinn and Hilde happened in the Prologue arc, instead of a flashback.

    • @JarkeyBacon

      That is a fair critique, it would have been interesting to see if Yukimura could have somehow integrated one of the girls in the prologue (like Anne or John's Sister - the daughter of the mother that saved a young Thorfinn).
      What is even sadder is that despite being chronological, the Anime in S1 doesn't show Hild's backstory. Bit of a missed opportunity imo.

      I made this video mainly because I was bored of the conversation surrounding Hild by both who like her and those who don't. People tend to talk past each other and belittle others for having a disagreement.

  • @molluskscommawethe
    @molluskscommawethe Рік тому +1

    I love Hild as a character, even if she is a little narratively simplistic. I think it would have been a better idea to use Einar as Thorfinn's moralistic anchor, even if Thorfinn never acutely needed one from within his own party. Einar could stand to have a little more to do after the farm arc. Hild's threats are kind of meaningless and lowkey annoying, but Einar would have more insight into Thorfinn's turmoil without always assuming he'd kill again. It would have been enough to kill Thorfinn simply for not following through with his promise to create a land free from war, which he has tense odds of succeeding. Having said that, I do appreciate the nuance of Hild struggling to come up with reasons to continue distrusting Thorfinn. I, also, cried when this part of her story concluded.

    • @JarkeyBacon
      @JarkeyBacon  Рік тому +3

      I disagree / think the narrative is already kinda doing this? Einar in the most recent chapters is coming up against Thorfinn and questioning him pretty strongly. Hild isn't just asking the question of "If Thorfinn will Kill" but also "Could Thorfinn end the cycle of vengence". The BSW is designed mainly as a way to challenge Thorfinn personally and put him in situations where he has to repeatedly break his oath and Hild is part of that test too. But she is her own character made to test Thorfinn is he can overcome what Askeladd (and many others) could not.
      Einar has also no reason to want to kill Thorfinn. His anger against him for being a warrior happened at the beginning of the farm arc and Einar is not the type of character to say "If you fail, I will kill you."
      Basically, I'm saying that replacing Hild with Einar (while would give Einar more to do in the BSW) takes away something pretty key to the story. Hild has only remained more and more relevant over time and is a character in her own right that is dealing with difficult issues internally. Her existence imo is very much justified.

    • @molluskscommawethe
      @molluskscommawethe Рік тому +1

      @@JarkeyBacon I don't think Hild's threats ever actually factor in to Thorfinn's decisions, because he never really wants to break his oath to begin with (especially since Thorfinn is much stricter in defining violence than Hild is) and Hild usually says her bits after Thorfinn already passed the test. The one time that Thorfinn has a hiccup, Hild doesn't even really do anything except aim her crossbow as usual.
      Einar would not influence Thorfinn with threats; he was there from the beginning of Thorfinn's transformation and would want his friend to succeed, already believes in him. Thorfinn would certainly listen to Einar.
      Thorfinn can't build a land of peace if he uses violence to attain his dream, which makes his microcosm tests along the way redundant. Hild could have gotten away with keeping Thorfinn on his path by making its destination the ultimatum for Thorfinn's life. I feel like it would barely change her role in the story. I understand that her somewhat purposeless threats are expressions of her coping with her vengeance, and of course would not want to alter that if it too little of her character were to come out.

    • @JarkeyBacon
      @JarkeyBacon  Рік тому +1

      @@molluskscommawethe I totally agree with your first paragraph. I may have not made it clear in my first response however (or even my video aha). Hild doesn't factor into Thorfinn's decision making not to kill, but the tension with her is that Thorfinn wants to stop her from killing at her. We don't want her to fall into the path of vengence.
      Hild, once again, is her own character that adds to Thorfinn's but also (and it is often forgotten) that Thorfinn adds to hers. Can we bring a Prologue Thorfinn (and even more morally justified Prologue Thorfinn), one that has never killed and has ever convential right to kill him and still convince her to not fall into revenge? This is the test for Thorfinn, not just him not killing. Can Thorfinn save the steal man version of his prologue self? Can he end the cycle with Hild (and also Karli)?
      This is a role a new character has to fulfill and not Einar imo. Einar is introduced too early into Thorfinn's arc to fufill this purpose.

    I've thought about the significance of Hild's character before. To me the difference between Thorfinn and Hild's character arcs is caused by the difference between their father's/family's killer. Askeladd continued with carnage and while he mentored Thorfinn in some ways, he still used and manipulated him for his own ends. He trained Thorfinn into a wanton killer, and Thorfinn was also in an environment where murder is a daily occurence. Thorfinn had to go through a 180-degree change in environment and people (Einar) to learn that revenge and violence wasn't the answer. Meanwhile, Hild meets a reformed Thorfinn who is ready to repent and doesn't run away from what he did. He doesn't manipulate or taunt her about it, like Askeladd did to him. Both of their rage are justifiable and I can completely understand the hatred Hild feels. But it does make a difference when the wrongdoer is 100% repentant, not just in actions, but in speech, values and behaviour. It gave Hild closure and the strength to forgive him. It was my favourite touching moment in the manga.

      (I had a quick re read to spark some of my thoughts).
      I'd first suggest you go to the chapter 188 discussion on r/vinlandsaga as they tend to be quite an interesting read. I don't have a monopoly on Hild opinions after all haha.
      www.reddit.com/r/VinlandSaga/comments/r2rtp1/manga_chapter_188_release_thread/
      I personally really enjoy the chapter. Lots of quiet and peaceful scenary. Hild before meeting the gang was stuck in the forest both physically and mentally. She was stuck killing bears because its a way for her to inact her justice on that which took her master away from her. But also a way to funnel her anger and hatered for Thorfinn into something. Its a way to now be the Hunter.
      Then she meet Thorfinn and she can't bring herself to kill him. He isn't the beast / bear she thought him to be. Through the travels of the crew her worldview has expanded past the narrow one of the Hunter and the Hunted.
      In 188, She no longer has to kill the bear, and the bear doesn't have to kill her, both can be happy. There is not hunter or hunted.
      The Bear Spirit says: "I thought you hated Bears. Because a long ime ago, a leader of yours was killed by one." Now this is refering to the Huntering master most likely, but also could be refering to Thorfinn too. Hild no longer hates Thorfinn, but that doesn't mean she has forgiven him. She is just not having to be stuck in the forest like she used to. She can come and go as she pleases.
      She doesn't want to dwell on it. She also doesn't want it to come inbetween her current relations. Hence why she didn't want Karli to know about it. Though, this could also mean she still doesn't want to confront it either. So, I guess we will have to wait and see what happens later down the line!
      Bit of a ramble but I hope you got something out of this comment!

      Assuming that "Him" here is referring Thorfinn, the answers are (in order of question):
      No, Hild is not his sister. Ylva is his sister.
      Yes, Ylva (Thorfinn's Sister) and Helga (Thorfinn's Mother) do show back up after the anime.

    I'm more interested in that weapon of hers and whether or not something like it really existed during the dark age. It's very similar to that of a modern cobra-style "self-cocking" crossbow. I know the Chinese had some type of a "self-cocking" crossbow as well and it was a repeater that used a box magazine. And I think the greeks had something similar going on as well.

      Hmmm, not sure tbh. I think the idea is that Crossbows were a thing, and her design would be possible given the time period. I think Yukimura mentioned that he designed it without the need off things like screws because the didn't exist at the time, or something like that.

      @@JarkeyBacon Yes. I remember the author mentioning that in the manga. However, it surprises me the kinds of things that existed (or at least possibly existed) in ancient (and medieval) times that we consider to be modern. Hydro-powered sawmills for example, scuba-diving gear, batteries, light bulbs(possibly), etc. Even screws and springs existed since ancient times. How commonly were they used, and if knowledge of these things made it to dark age Scandinavia is another topic altogether. Therefore, it makes me curious if a crossbow similar to what is depicted in the manga actually existed during that time period in that region.

      @@trapperscout2046 Yukimura tends to be pretty accurate and good with these things, however I don't know for sure.
      From a quick Wikipedia scan, it seems regular crossbows definitely existed at the time of VS prologue, as they were seen in france in 947. But they didn't become the norm until the 1100s. Which matches what is in VS since in the first chapter, they were somewhat surprised they the french were using crossbows.
      As for something like Hild's I'd have to take a closer look.

      @@JarkeyBacon I agree. The author does a great job doing his research. It's amazing the amount of actual historical figures and events that make it into the series.
      As far as crossbows go, they definitely existed during that time period. The Romans made regular use of them as siege engines and even had a hand held version called the Manuballista. Vegetius makes mention of it in his military treatise. And in 1066, the Normans used them in the battle of Hastings. I figure Askeladd would probably know a thing or two about them since he is of Romano-Briton descent.

    Plot : What if hild kill his family member and thorfinn again goes in psychopath

    • @JarkeyBacon

      That would be interesting, but I doubt it. First of all, Hild wouldn't be likely to kill anyone but Thorfinn, and Thorfinn has already overcome being psycho as shown with this confrontation with Floki.

      It is kinda boring in manga now bcoz he doesn't show his true power and madness
