- I've been looking for a way to time my RCs without spending too much money on timing systems. This free Android app called LapTrax shows promise. This was my very first experience with the app and I'll be sure to do a follow up as I become more proficient in using it. Sorry you had some difficulties with the detection, the camera-based modes do tend to work better with bright lighting and bright colors.

This app idea was a good one. A little tweak and it will really be good.

Nice review! Wonder if there were more cars going how it would fair. but if you are running practice laps by yourself at an RC track, this might work OK! I'd be worried about hitting that tripod and conking the phone! lol cheers

Looks like it works!!! I like the countdown feature.
Sometimes I need to use a cone to mark the width of the start. So I know the car will get picked up.
If you try it on your MiniZ and it works, it should. Let me know. There are a number in a Facebook good looking for something, but run Android and can’t use the same app I do.
I need to get the Mini Z track first, but you know I'll be trying it. ;)
Theibault They actually work on a hard surface. I’ve run one of mine on shop floor out of curiosity. Might be the only surface that the stock tires work on.

I have TCR slotless race cars and this may work counting laps. But can it do multiple cars? I see nothing in the AppleStore.
I haven't tested multiple although the dev said if the colors contrast enough it should. It's an old app so I don't even know if it's still available.
That's worked well, I think it might of been when it missed the car was when you was passing closer to the camera.
I think it was a light and possibly how I had the camera aimed. Gonna play with it more and I'll report back.
I can't get the app to work...I can't figure how to ad drivers as it won't work I can't do four racers . It's a disaster to learn 🙄

😁 Man that's cool best use of a cell phone I ever seen! I think if you would have flattened out the tripods legs and made the phone lower to the ground pointing perfectly ahead not tilted standing straight up it would pick up the car going past better maybe? Either way it's a neat thing for running alone makes it more fun.
I was thinking it would be better tilting down towards the ground. I'm going to be playing with it more and I'll try both and see which works better. 👍👍
@@theibault Yeah, higher up (1m?) with the camera tilted down tends to work better, and helps to ensure there's no other parts of the track on-screen, which can confuse the detection. Higher/Tilted down also helps when racing multiple cars, so the camera has a chance to see each car, even when clustered together.

I don't see why not.
For a free app, you can't beat it. Might be a little too new school for me. But I think I would have a hard time chasing the car on the basketball court with my car.😉
It's honestly pretty easy to use. Still need to go play with it again as it snowed so no running on roads right now. ;)

Would this work in a race with multiple cars. And if so how many cars can it support.
Never tried it with multiple cars. In theory, it should. The cars just all need to be bright and different colored.

Done deal. I'm downloading that app! I purchased one off the app store and it never worked. This one has more features and better GUI than the one I purchased. I emailed the designer of the app I purchased and he never responded. Money down the drain

I'm working on a drag race/sprint mode in the near future, where you setup the camera at the end of the track/finish line, and start the race off-screen.

@@theibault Ya I use it too, hey this app is awesome, I could have some fun with it. I seen it missed a couple times at first but when u adjusted it to the higher sharpness mode or whatever its called it seemed to do better
