Very interesting!... I have a Marto Phrobis bayonet, did not have an edge whatsoever. So I used the sharpening stone setting the bayonet down the same way as you but on the wooden table. And ground the edge using 800 grit left then right then left then right for a few days. Then I was unable to cut properly the paper of utility invoices and felt frustrated. What did I do wrong? Maybe did not have the absolute precision of the rods. Then I tried the yellow slip paper! Yes, it cut it perfectly. So why is that? The bill paper is a bit of a more palpable material like compressed paper. The yellow slip is uniform, stark, thin and less spongy. Therefore the knife need not be razor sharp and would cut it well. Yet in real use if you want to cut through textiles, nothing will be sharp enough. But for general use, this is ok. And what else would you want with such a big knife???

    这样的磨刀方式很有趣,也非常好玩。不过在我看来,有一个问题。左边和右边的磨刀石,在工作时的角度,和刀刃的角度是一致的吗?

Howdy, long time no see. Hope you have been well this past year with all this craziness going on and around. This sharpening system may be what I have been looking for. A few years ago I bought several knives from Ontario Knife Company in NY. They are an old knife company and they are in America. I figured with all the different knives they produce they should be reliable. When they arrived they would not even cut paper. I took my AF Survival knife and worked with a wet stone for multiple ours over a few days and tried to put a sharp edge on it. No luck. I was not happy. I finally decided to talk to one of their tech folks. Basically he said They do not put sharp edges on their knives. I know from reading up on them they use a very hard metal to form their blades. What i learned is the grind also determines the sharpness they can put on a blade. It would seem to me that if you are going to make a blade for the military (I got an AF Survival knife and a version of the USMC K Bar knife) I can tell you right now If I was a pilot and I needed my survival knife to defend myself I want it sharp. What am I going to do point it at my enemy and say knifie knifie and expect him to fall over and die? So a hard metal means it keeps its edge longer, but if its not sharp its of no use. Will this system put an edge and make it sharp on my knives? Since I may need it to fight with but there is also a survival side. I have to look at a knife as energy used equals work accomplished. If it takes to many burned calories to make a feather board to make a fire then the knife is (in my opinion) working against my chance of surviving. Something else, If I get a knife for the purpose of preparing my food. It MUST be sharp, skin and muscle are hard to cut or slice through especially when the same knife makes butter giggles when you try to slice it. Are you familiar with Ontario? Any suggestions beside throw them away and get REAL knives? Glad to see you again. Take care.

Hello Sam, glad to see that you are doing well in these crazy times. As usual, thanks for the detailed dialogue, there are a lot of good thoughts in there.
If you pick up this sharpener, I have no doubt that you will be satisfied with it's performance. It's not cheap but you do get what you pay for.
Ontario is actually the manufacturer of the M9 that I am using i this video. I have had a good experience with them over the years, no complaints. But just like most things, it's all about personal preference and what feels best to the user.
Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts and... keep them coming!

is this blade supposed to have an off-center grind? I got one recently and one side of the blade basically doesn't even have a secondary bevel. I could touch it up but Idk if it's supposed to be like that.

What's the edge angle of this knife? Thx!

It's best to use the 'marker option' to find the exact angle. Things can vary from blade to blade even on the same model.

So how does one use this sharpener in a tent, or after a hunt? I guess I could take a bench and this dumb sharpener with me. OR I could just use what mankind has for thousands of years, a whetstone.

My knives don't generally get dull during 1 trip to the field. I prepare before the trip and check my gear after; re-evaluate, and prepare for the next trip.
But hey, I guess we all have a different SOP's. Do what works for you.
