    The M9 was designed by Micky Fin of Quel A Tec. Phrobis III was created to produce it, they contracted with Buck. Buck was the original manufacturer & made them for Phrobis. Buck also sold them on the commercial market as Buck 188 until 1997. They lost to military contract to Lan Cay in the early 1990’s. Lan Cay subbed out some initial manufacturing to General Cutlery. After Lan Cay came Ontario Knife Company and TriTech. Ontario also makes the Marine OKC3S. OKC still makes the M9. Phrobis and Buck had a falling out of some kind and Phrobis contracted with a Spanish company for a bit, then went under. Buck made some M9 for foreign military as well trial for the Marines who never adopt the M9. Buck never contracted with LanCay. The first run of Phrobis has Buck’s date codes being more expensive now. LanCay modified the sheath and blade. Ontario changed the handle. LanCay also made the M11 OED knife.

      Saying that "M9 was designed by Micky Fin of Quel A Tec" will be a stretch, they mostly copied design design elements and features of the Eickhorn KCB-77 bayonet.
      The KCB-70 had the screwdriver lug on the sheath just like the M9, it too functioned as wire cutter. It did all that way before the M9 in the 70s. The only problem that the KCB-70 had was its grips were prone to cracking, this issue was later fixed on KCB-77 introduced in 1977.
      If anything the M9 is a downgrade compared to the KCB-70 and KCB-77 because it doesn't have a full-tang construction.

    I have an 'upside down BOC' - an M7 which had the blade and cross guard fitted the wrong way round. It was a factory boo-boo which I have never seen before or after, so I feel I have a fairly unusual example.
    And - yes, i also have a Buck - once owned by an Afghanistan vet.

    That tan M9 was made for Saber Defence, a now defunct firearms manufacturing company. They went out of business in 2013 after several of their top people were convicted of arms trafficing. They were importing supressors from Finland without proper paperwork. They had a manufacturing facility in Nashville TN and the UK. That is a pretty rare bayonet you have there. The USMC bayonets are OKC 3Ss not M9s. Nice collection, good video.

    The small round ceramic sharpener at the back of the OKC 3s is for the serration part :) Nice video! I also have a collection of US knives and bayonets like Ka-Bar, Camillus USMC, USAF, Ontario USN MOD 0, Solingen M4 / M8A1, Buck Nighthawk, various folding knives, but that OKC 3s ... rules them all! :D

    Pastor Breaker, I bought many years ago a new/used knife at a gun store that said on 1 side M9 PHROBIS III USA and on the other BUCK 188 USA. It fits on my Mossberg 590 shotgun trench gun. I’m not sure what I have after seeing your video. I was told at the time the pouch on the sheath was used to carry a Buck Folding Hunter or multi-tool.

      @@Robertbreaker3 I did some research and found Buck made knives under contract for Prodius. My knife appears to be made around 1987-1989 probably 89. People are asking $800+ for them. Mine is in excellent, nearly new condition. I found pretty easily an extensive amount of history on these knives on-line. There are various subtle markings on the knives that can give their age of manufacture . It was really interesting. In field testing they had no failures compared to others during the contract bid period. The blade is 420-425 stainless steel. Awesome knives!

    I have an M7 bayonet with the M8a1 scabbard.... i went to basic at Fort Sill in the 90s and that's what we had in training, and that's the one I was issued when i got to my unit. (1964 pattern, vietnam era design, skinny blade) It's in great shape (dad taught me to take care of my tools)
    The M9 seems more practical.... but, if i'm out there and need to cut wire, i'll probably have my AK and its bayonet, lol

    I have an Ontario M9 and it easily cut small nails and wire, but I tried to cut a hardened steel spring and it took a LOT of force and finally cut it, but left a dent in the cutting surface. I later cut the hardened spring with a pair of lineman’s pliers that had hardened cutting edges with a lot less force, but a blade with that hardness would be useless. I saw a video today where the M9 easily cut barb wire but a Polish AK47 bayonet could not.

    I have 2 one green and one black, both bought new for $123 each and both are Ontario knife. I shopped around for almost 2 years to find at that price as they usually are $150 to $179. Ontario sold out to a company in Virginia and they closed the plant in Wisconsin a few weeks ago and from what I read the company dosen't make any knives they just buy from China and put their name on knives and then sell them so if you want a OKC m9 made in the USA you should probably buy one now as some retail stores still have some but once they are gone you probably won't find one. I got mine from midway USA.

      There are a lot of good knives. Quality is the first concern (strength of steel) and then price. Do you want to pay a lot for a GREAT KNIFE, or do you you want to pay a little for an OKAY KNIFE? If so, maybe get one of these cheap ones...

    Do you know why the saw/file on the back of the blade is designed that way? I cannot seem to find out. Also the glass fiber in the sheath will dull the edge unless you keep the back of the blade against the sheath when you withdraw the blade, or put it in the sheath. That may be why some are saying it will not keep an edge. This seems to happen with all glass reinforced sheaths.

    Bayonets are a controlled item, turned into the armory with your rifle. Don’t know how a Marine brought his bayonet out of Iraq. Just be mindful and pray for discernment when you’re getting these deals. Semper Fidelis!

    • @knivesarecoolandaxestoo2946
      @knivesarecoolandaxestoo2946  2 роки тому +2

      We'll do. From my understanding, I've learned that often here where I live, the bases have sales in which they sell stuff like that to dealers, who then sell them to others. We have several Army Navy Stores around here, and I find them at those places too.

    • @jasonstravers776
      @jasonstravers776 2 роки тому +1

      @@knivesarecoolandaxestoo2946 Yes, those are drmo sales. Anytime we sell stuff to the public, sometimes it’s excess, a manufacturer defect, or the product didn’t meet mil spec standards. Sometimes units no longer need that equipment and other units will pick it up before it goes for sale to the public. I don’t doubt you have the genuine bayonets, but the story about the Iraq dirt was a little far. Maybe it’s true, but there was some shady dealings for him to take that back. We captured all sorts of enemy weapons, had to bury them, it was a Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) order. In my 25 years of service no Marine every was able to take his issued field gear, weapons, for private use. Some things do fall through the cracks though.
      Love your videos and the collections you share. More importantly I’ve learned a tremendous amount from your Biblical teachings and the depth of your knowledge in scripture. May the Lord continue to abundantly bless you and your family.

    Very nice collection. But tell me, I do not get one thing. If it is a military used bayonet, why do they let the paint come off and why not refurbish them as new. I mean to say is that is it ok to use a half scratched blade in the military when everything needs to shine and everything needs to be uniform? Does this not make a team of soldiers look rag-tag with each knife i.e OKC 3s having half the 1095 blade exposed? What will happen to rust, what will happen to the advantages of a dark blade? Sorry for the questions, but I am a collector and I have to understand why the military uses sub-par finishes on their knives and when the finish comes off, they still use it as such???

    • @inerlogic
      @inerlogic 6 місяців тому +2

      You spray paint it flat black if needed, nothing is shiny but our boots. And the new boots the kids wear can't be shined either.
      The great thing about a scabbard is it hides the finish of the blade.
      If you're taking the bayonet out of the scabbard, you have bigger problems than the finish.

    • @OnTheRiver66
      @OnTheRiver66 6 місяців тому

      Everything needs to shine only for parades. I had a pair of spit shined leather boots just for parades, and my other pair would often have the leather worn down to suede. The items you use in the field have to be maintained but do not have to look like they were just issued, especially items like entrenching tools and bayonets.

    • @OnTheRiver66
      @OnTheRiver66 6 місяців тому

      Great video. I have an M9 Ontario I bought on eBay and it was used in a National Guard unit, and there is no sharpener on the sheath, so some were issued without sharpeners. Have you noticed that those sheaths have glass fiber in the plastic and when you draw the knife the sheath will dull the edge if it touches it? I have to draw mine so the back of the blade contacts the sheath otherwise I lose the edge. A sharper on a glass filled plastic sheath would be very practical. Also, do you know why the saw back has that design? I have no found a good explanation for that design.

    Brother Breaker , does this trader dans sell bayonets for milsurp rifles such as the Chinese type 56. When I purchased my rifle it didn't have one and I've looked ,around local and can't find the original one that came on it . the bayonet that originally came on it is not a flat blade , its like a cone shaped . I was told the blade design was to inflict a wound that can't be repaired. I'm not sure that's true but it does sound feesible. If you have one that you would sell , I would buy it . I'm not one for fronting money to people I don't know , but I'm (well) certain you wouldn't cheat a man of his money or possession's I've seen alot of your sermons ,hours upon hours , I don't think guile is in you.
