I´ve been looking for this clip for years, thanks so much for posting it! Having said that, being 5 when it was shown, I thought the slide made her go back to being a little girl. That really freaked me out (in the best possible way)!
Alyson Kirk was the last Annie on broadway for that company, she only played the role for a short time because it closed. So Alison Smith was on broadway the longest but did leave(:
I have seen clips of both and thought they were both very good it's a shame the show closed so soon after Kirk got the part (I think it was less than 6 months) If I recall correctly though, didn't they have her take over Annie on one of the touring companies not long after that.
To bad the Prime Time Saturday Morning Special on the Annie auditions isn't on you tube. It's on Annieorphans web page but does not work. Freezes up. The owner should fix it. :)
I agree. I love both and Andrea is a tough act to beat. Alison was actually one of the youngest peformers to take on Annie. If you watch the documentary about the auditions to replace Sarah Jessica Parker (which ultimately led to Alison being the new Annie) you can see why Martin Cheeman casted her. She had a great voice and also played the part with just the right amount of spunk that Annie needs and she had some great acting skills even at a young age (I think she had to learn the part in like a week after she was casted!) I also believe the director realized that being slightly younger meant she wouldn't outgrow the part as quickly as the previous Annies did!
I am not sure this video is a very good way to judge the difference. Allison was great, don’t get me wrong (I’ve heard her perform live), but this was at the tail end of her run and she didn’t sound quite this strong right out of the gate. It took her some time in the role, and probably ongoing training, to develop this level of belt power, and control of her pitch. Andrea on the other hand was a powerhouse from the moment the show opened. Anyway there’s no harm in folks having their own opinions. They were all fantastically talented performers. I am not sure how much Allison sings these days with her busy acting career. Andrea’s still belting beautifully almost 30 years later.
@bfs7999766 no this was actually as allison smith was preparing to leave the show herself. they just thought it would be cool to have the original and then current one do the trick together.
That's not correct. There were 5 girls that played Annie in the original run and the last to play the role was Alyson Kirk. She closed the show in 1983. Alisson Smith played the role the longest.
Actually there were “good” replacements, and Allison was one of them (possibly the best replacement), but none of them could really upstage the one and only Andrea. (just my perspective)
I love her voice more than anyone else’s in the world.
I wish I was this talented when I was 12.
Never saw the show live, closed before I was born but from audio and here mine favs are Andrea and Shelley
I love Allison Smith. She was my favorite Annie.
I saw her on Broadway and she is my least favorite
@@hfleah mine too
I can see why. she was only 10 when she took over the role..and played it the longest.
@@hfleahdo you know what me too Derek Llewellyn feel like I was with her attention past life look back
I just loved his teeth.Brings back memories!
I've been looking for this clip as well, I remember seeing it on T.V. at the time and was amazed. I know how it's done now though, since I do magic.
Can you please explain to me how it was done?

how is this done, my godness! its amazing
From Winnipeg no less!!
Every time I see Fanny Sidney's character on 'Call My Agent' I think she looks like 1970s Andrea McArdle
The Magician is the late Great Doug Henning an Canadian Magician.
this is amazing!
They Rock!
Never mind it was Kirk. Smith is usually thought of as the last because the other girl only played it a short time. :)

@DanielPeterSmith Please have Alison post some videos of her singing as an adult. Or from Kate & Allie.
annie gave her a start, and she is good. I always see her as annie
Can someone tell me how this was done?
Did they just disappear Andrea mcardle in a tube and spit out the younger model?

Do you mean the auditions for the 1997 revival?
It's still on UA-cam..I watched it the other day...
no, it was Alison that came out
Yea not many people know about her. :(
I have a friend named Allison Smith, and she is 11 years old
@magicaldj1 how they do this hahahaa its so cool
Where did you get this video????
was this to introduce the new annie?
Never thought I'd say this but I DO prefer Alison. Clearer, more 'Tinny' tone....just sits better with my ear. Both SUPER talented though!!!!

Actually Alisson Smith never left the show it closed in 1983 after a successfull long run with her still playing the role.

So Andrea was about 19 in this video?
I believe so since it was 1982
not to gloat, but I can sing almost like that and i'm 12
How did they do that magic trick with the slide?
Why did he turn Andrea McCardle into that screechy little troll child?! 😩
Sorry...there was never a good replacement for McArdle.
Having said that...to the people posting these time capsules I say THANK YOU!

@@tomorrowmorning8360 I saw the show with Andrea's replacement, Shelley Bruce and thought she was excellent.
@@ackieboy1 she was great, i agree
What a horrible pink top lol!
