Allison Smith - Goodbye to You - Kate & Allie

- With all due respect to whomever owns the rights - CBS? MCA/Universal Home Video? NBC Universal Television Distribution? - and in a slight departure from my usual bug, bird and knife videos, I'm uploading this clip from a 1988 episode of Kate & Allie called "The Band Singer", where Jenny joins a band. At the end of the episode, they perform the Patty Smyth/Scandal song, "Goodbye to You".
I wanted to post it for three reasons:
1) I couldn't find it anywhere on UA-cam, which surprised me
2) It deserves to be seen/heard. Since so many people seem to have forgotten (or have just never heard) what vocals sounded like before that evil Auto Tune boo! hiss! was invented (curse you Andy Hildebrand, Cher and T-Pain!!!), this seemed like a good example of what a former broadway star turned sitcom actress could do with nothing but her own voice and a good band backing her.
3) I just plain love this song :)
I hope this clip doesn't get taken down, because I get the feeling not many people are aware they ever did this on Kate & Allie and it really shouldn't just fade out of existence/memory (aside from the few people who bought the DVDs, of course). - Розваги
This was my (twin) cousins band! I was so proud of them making it to national TV. They had to change the name of the band to BE wholesome family oriented (for the show). They had a single they did under Liar, and back in the '80's they played at Baby-O's, in Seaside Heights NJ. So handsome, (all the band members) Allison is so gentle pushing away, my cousin, they really all were such sweet dolls (still are). Love & Hugs, Joni :) I still have your poster from the '80's.
Alright!😊
Ahhhh So glad the boys from Liar are still doing great. I was their lighting guy when they started out and did too many shows with them to remember! Love this clip!
Way better than Patty Smyth! Well done.
@@msciras good not better.
As beautifully as Allison Smith performed this song, I always loved seeing Susan St. James and Jane Curtin beaming and clapping with pride at the end (truly as themselves, not just as their characters Kate & Allie).
my thoughts exactly!!!
I always remember her singing this.
Oh man , Allison had a tremendous voice. I was blown away when I first saw this episode. I heard her version before the original Scandal version. Now I really love both versions.
She was on Broadway! One of the girls who played Annie in the first run of that show.
Remember this like it was yesterday!
I saw Patty Smyth and Scandal sing this from the front row when they opened for Brian Adams back in the 80's. What a blast.
Sounds fun. 👍
It was a blast right up until a girl who drank a bit too much threw up on my buddy next to me.
I also had the biggest crush on Allison Smith back then.
I remember being floored by Allison Smith singing this on "Kate And Allie!" Even better than the Scandal version IMO! Allison was supposed to record an album with Keith Forsey of Billy Idol fame. Don't know why the album was never released. Pity as it would have been awesome!
She always displayed her singing ability on the show. That girl was too cold vocally and should have a huge singing career 😊
wow I watched this show during 1984-1989 I never knew she could sing so good, great seeing the old cast again
Oh man got to love the 1980's
I loved Allison Smith as a kid. I wanted her to come out with a record after this episode
I remember this and I thought it then, and still think it, this gal can SING!! She should have tried to make a pop music album, I bet it would have gone well
Allison would've been in the same category as Debbie Gibson and Tiffany were at the time: Teen Queens of Pop.
It is her real voice. Before Kate and Allie, Allison Smith played Annie on Broadway.
What a voice she has!!! This was one of my favorite episodes. I love this show so much.
Wow she's fantastic
I saw Alison Smith on 9th Ave. after this aired and told her how much I liked her performance and she was a real sweetie. She was with an 80s heartthrob actor at the time, can't remember who. Someone needs to bring back the "Kate & Allie" series, AntennaTV?
Brian Bloom- he later went on to date singer-songwriter Debbie Gibson
There's a DVD box set on ebay. Loved that show!
I remember her singing Tomorrow on Arsenio Hall. Love this song, & this show!
@@rl8275 And She Sung It On "Hollywood Squares" With John Davidson Also as well.
I can’t believe they showed the entire song. That wouldn’t happen today.
Susan and Jane couldn't look more proud if Allison was their own daughter, which she probably was like in a way.
She was 18 or 19 in this episode. She was Born: December 9, 1969 in New York City, New York, USA
18
Man, I used to love this show! I definitely remember this episode as I used to love this song.
I saw this the night it aired. I still 19 and had been out of high school 7 months. When I heard her launch into Goodbye To YOu,I could only think then "Sheesh, could she pick an older song?" (4 years to a teen is a lot.) I recall her being in "Annie" as far back as 1980,in fact at my graduation ceremony from elementary school that year,we (unfortunatley) had to sing "The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow." ICK! As a 12 year old boy,I was mortified by that choice. LOL!
her voice still gives me goose bumps, which she had chosen this career instead
I wish someone would show this episode in it's entirety.
I remember she sang this song. Always reminded of it when I hear it.
Looks like she was the fourth Annie of five. Andrea McArdle, Shelly Bruce, Sarah Jessica Parker, Allison Smith and then Alyson Kirk. Had to look it up 'cause I'd forgotten Bruce and Kirk. I seem to recall seeing all of them together once on a telethon or a talk show and I think they sang Tomorrow. I miss hearing singers who aren't auto tuned. LOL
Patty Smyth and Scandel performed at my college as an opening act for the main band. They were a bigger hit than the main band who were performing ...... I can't even remember who they were now ...... it's been around 30 years. However, I have to say I like Allison smith's cover of this song more than the original by Patty Smyth and Scandel.
to CanItAlready , I couldn't agree with u more...I've been looking for this 4ever...I've had Allison's performance in my head for years...Thank u for putting it on here...Now I don't have look 4 it......
Great song, she did a good job. Patty Smyth did the original and it will always be a classic.
Been looking for this for years. Thank you thank you
Me to
Great show with wonderful actors
A very good cover !
Well, of course Allison can sing. She was starring as Annie on Broadway soon after Andrea McArdle when she was only 10 or 11.
Andrea was the first Annie and Allison was the fourth Annie. After Andrea, Shelley Bruce was Annie, and then Sarah Jessica Parker so Allison wasn’t Annie shortly after Andrea. Allison was the longest running Annie having done it for three years.
Great voice never heard her sing
she is and always will be so great
I remember this episode. kate and allie were brilliant.
WOW!!! THIS IS PRETTY INCREDIBLE,,, AMEN!!!
AND YOU ARE RIGHT! I CAN'T REMEMBER THIS EPISODE AT ALL?!
AND I AM A HUGE FAN AND GREW UP WITH THE SHOW AND HAVE THE DVD BOX SET TODAY!!!
SO I DOUBT MANY OTHERS WOULD KNOW OF AND REMEMBER THIS GEM 💎OF AN EPISODE?!!
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!!
I liked the show Kate and Allie.
Great cover version!
Had such a crush on her back in the day!
She played Annie on Broadway when she was ten. About 1979.
She played Annie for three years.
I looooooooved this episode and I loooooooove her rendition of the song! Thank you!!
I have k and a on DVD and I must watch this episode at least once a month -- along with the one from the first season called "the piano teacher". John Loeffler -- holy crap! Hottie then, hottie now!!! Thank again for posting this - totally going my caves
Thanks for posting. Brings back great memories. Roger Stauss, Audio Mixer, Kate and Allie
K & A was always such a well done comedy....we always enjoyed watching it in college. Nice to see it again.
thanks for posting. I was surprised when a few years ago, I couldn't find it either. One of my fave episodes of thisi show.
Precioso! gracias😍😍😍
Dunno if she still sings, does still act. Ought to take it up again.
Amazing!
I am addicted to music I had mono vcr when saw TV promo for the show I never watched later bouhht stereo vcr I used my audio equipment rerecorded into stereo
She sounds great!
That was sick 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you like it. If she's still singing, it's not in her list of credits at IMDb. Looks like she's been doing guest spots and recurring roles on different TV shows over the years. Not sure if any of the original Broadway Annies are still singing, now that I think about it.
@1942nuclear
The song was originally recorded by Patty Smyth and Scandal, but they had Allison Smith sing it in this episode of Kate & Allie. This was one of my favorite episodes; had a pretty funny scene that came right before this performance.
Allison Smith (awesome voice) & Ari Meyers were hot. The first season they were so young but as the show went on and they got older they were super hot. Two of my favorite episodes are the Sabrina one & the first episode introducing Jason played Ricky Paul Goldin. The show was great when the show focused on Jennie & Emma. I was bummed when Ari left the show to go to college. The show was never the same when she left and Allie got married. Good memories.
In the last season, there was 1 episode that focused on Jennie. Jennie without Emma was like Christine without Lisa on YCDTOTV early in the 1986 season before Christine left YCDTOTV.
@@good03boy What show is that?
@@DonnaBrooks Kate and Allie.
YOu can't do that on television

Thank you soooo much for posting this. I can still remember that exact episode. Her "boyfriend" kept trying to change her. I loved how she did the song HER way! I agree with another poster...I wish they'd bring back Kate & Allie on one of the 'retro' stations. MeTV or Antenna. Does anyone know...does Allison still do any singing?
Hallmark Channel should air Kate and Allie reruns.
i so remember this episode thanks for posting
Allison Smith - TWW - Galileo
Here she is today!
I wish she would try to go back to broadway...I'd pay to see her in something
How come you cant find this episode on youtube? Copyright for the song?
I wish you could post the whole ep the bit where they go heavy metal was funny :)
This was good, but someone said better than the original? No way. Patty Smyth owns this song.
Like most rockers, Patty Smyth is tone deaf, as are her fans. Allison Smith, on the other hand, has something very few so called singers have. It's called talent.
You're tone deaf, Van Halen wanted Patty in their band after DLR left! Allison is good but NO WAY in hell can she touch Smyth!
You can’t beat on-line chemistry rapport that Patty had with her bandmates concerning this song. Allison has a great booming voice but its playback.
Sending you a message...
:) Just got off IMDb...and see that she's a wife and mother but still does a little acting. I'm happy she has a good life. I can still picture her in the first years of K&A where they let her sing - at the wedding - as Mable in 'Pirates of P' and of course, in the video you shared with us. What an amazing voice. Wasn't she the 2nd or 3rd Annie? And ran for something like 3 years? wow! That's something! Being in CA, I miss not being able to enjoy any Broadway...at all! Darn it!
She was the fourth Annie and did it for three years.
I forgot that SJP was also Annie! Thanks. That must have been really something seeing all of them together. I have a little memory of seeing Andrea McArdle with another child actor/singer on some show on TV...maybe an up and coming Broadway star...who knows? But I think they were coming down a slide??? Anything you might have seen, too? ;)
@skiscot she's currently in CSI
Shoulder pads!
You know it. 😁
She was Annie on broadway
After recording the segment back then on my mono vcr thought better than nothing
Later bought stereo vcr with editing ii audio dubbed the sound back in running the cables audio out vcr to amp then back into stereo vcr using the graphic equalizer improved the sound
One I just noticed is she lip sync hum try bigger screen tan my cell
No mater great cover
what season and episode is this
rac heal roseinblat Season 5 Episode 14, "The Band Singer"
Allison was a better singer than Patty Smyth. Not surprising. She played Annie on Broadway.
They're both great!
wasn't she second Annie on Broadway
Cathy McDonell Fourth, after Andrea McArdle, Shelley Bruce and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Looking back she looks a little like a Debbie Gibson with a Tiffany vocal
Yum-yum appeal.
too close.....i love this cover....nice try..... excelent vocals
debbie gibson
What about Debbie Gibson?
I'm not saying Allison isn't singing this but this is a mimicked proformance... They probably pre-recorded her singing this... That bass player and that guitar player aren't really playing I don't think...
chris rozier Is possible the band was miming along with prerecorded music but they did appear to know how to play those instruments. I doubt Allison Smith was doing a lip synch because not only was she putting a lot of effort into it, but she started on Broadway so there was no real need to have her do that. I can't say for sure, though, and this is one of those rare times when a google search produces no useful information on the subject.
Also, several comments down from yours is one from someone with some info on the band. Edit: just pinned the comment in question.
I doubt they were really playing... But they perhaps recorded the song themselves for the show... It happens... Most music performance on tv is lip sync... Even if they're lip syncing to their own voice...
I am the guitar player and I can tell you that we did pre-record the song in the studio with Alison. The night the episode was taped we did play it live, but in the end it was a mix of both versions. Bottom line, it is her amazing voice and our band (Liar from NJ) backing her. Doing this was a highlight in our career and a memory to cherish forever. What a blast!
I absolutely love how kate and allie simultaneously tilt their heads to look at tha guy jenny is pointing at
Yeah, that's how they did it on Knots Landing with Lisa Hartman about the same time, both were great singers.
Maybe it was easier and cheaper for the producers to get the rights to use that particular song than something more recent at the time? I was younger than you at the time and wasn't even familiar with the song first time I saw that episode. As for having to sing that song you had to sing (blech), it would have been unpleasant for me, too. I never liked that song. LOL
CSharp it also fit the story.
If that's really Smith, then she's better than Smyth.
That's really her. She'd played Annie on Broadway when she was younger.
