I agree about pot size. I have been accused of overpotting, but I would prefer a healthy tree to one suffering because I have not met the challenge of care. Unfortunately, there are other ways in which people make bonsai challenging==repotting only during a very narrow window of time, pinching rather than scissoring juniper foliage, etc. Probably the reason many newcomers do not stick with bonsai.
Very informative as always Milton. I really enjoy watching you take a tree that I think is nice and you always turn it into something much better. You have a great eye. When I’m analyzing a tree, I try to think of what you may see in it. I’ve gained so much knowledge from you. Thanks as always for the video and for all that you do!
I love how you intuitively know to cut back to just structure and can see a tree go from a puffball with a great trunk into a tree that has story, age, wind and seasons of growth and death and a march of time. So many trees I see online and in books seem so full and grown in, yet your trees show a story of struggle. What attracts you to those types of feelings to show in your tree?
It is the amalgamation of thousands of bonsai photo, calligraphy, paintings… I grew up in Asian culture. Now is the time to create an American style, which could be simple elegance like the heritage tree every city, and in our national forest…or hanging tree as we imagine in the wild wild west… Let us go for it.
Thank you for making that connection. The logo is designed my my partner who is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. ...to depict bondai should be plesureabler,, quick and easy....NOT tedious!
You don’t mess about do you Milton going away from the rule book which advises not to cut across the leaves or needles, I like your style, you are upsetting the old timers as you say you may give them a heart attack if they watch this video. You’re a lucky man being able to buy so good old trees.
Nice work on this tree. New pot for the root growth and the pruning will take off nicely in the style you want it to. Great buy from the auction. Excellent video.
Beautiful specimen. I don't like the side of the tree you are showing us as much as the other side for the front. It's more dramatic to see the trunk and branches framed by the greenery.

Wait iunitil i thin it out more😇 . What a great fine at a n auction!
Yes the small pot is out of preparation for the tree.
Being appropriate to feel comfortable.
I repotted my japanese maples today, getting ready for spring. I don’t think the air rooted one survived winter. I am hesitating to look.
Heck...you'll find out sooner or later.
Hi Milton what a beautiful tree with the way you clip the foliage will they brown up and if so how do you deal with that
Only the tips where you cut will brown. New growth soon covers the brown tips.
it looks amazing already. :)
Thanks!
Why do you peel the bark off the branches that you cut off?
I do it to make jins (deadwood), which is a design choice. A "Jin" is a bare-stripped part of branch.
Do you fertilize your trees ? If yes how often? Thanks from 🇨🇦
n the summer months, I will fertilize once a week using fish & Kelp fertilizer. For trees in nursery pots, slow realiease per instruction.,

Will this tree be for sale?
Please see last week's Q&A.
