    Finally a good review by an old fan, who doesn't start blaming the game and shows that this game has alot of potential. New doesn't always mean bad.

      Controllers are fine for games they're designed for, even some FPS games. For example Halo plays better/more natural on Xbox than on PC. But Quake is a pure PC shooter and I'd rather carve my eyes out than play any Quake game, especially multiplayer, with joysticks.

    • @DrStrangeloveII
      @DrStrangeloveII 6 років тому +10

      Yeah, some games like GTA or Saints Row I much prefer playing on the TV with joypad. But for FPS, they're the worst thing that ever happened, responsible for the slowing down, aiming down sights, slo-mo sequences and all that crap. When the FPS market shifted from PC to console, there was no place anymore for a game like Q3A with its rocket jump and railgun mayhem.

    Before quake champions I'd never played an actual arena shooter, tried tribes ascend but that's not quite the same thing. I love QC, as a kid I was too poor to have a pc and by the time I'd gotten a pc, the world was ruled by COD. To me this is refreshing and vivifies all the nostalgia I had looking through my step fathers magazines from the late 90s. Quake is oddly a part of my childhood I never had, the missing piece between the Spawn comics and the heavy industrial metal. This probably isn't the comment you're asking for lol but I do love QC enough I bought the champions pack just to show support for the genre.

    • @HansLollo
      @HansLollo  6 років тому +11

      It's exactly the kind of comment I'm looking for. Even though I was able to live that stuff (I turned 38 just a few days ago), it's a part of my childhood and youth. Comparable for me to your situation would be stuff I couldn't afford but can now - so from time to time I indulge. The COD problem is something I really should do another video on, but gotta do some disclaimers first because I'm working in the gaming industry and I can't really say all the stuff I want to say without making things awkward for myself.

      Do you know Slope? He was one of the worlds best gamer at Quake 1, which I've played like a junk. Know that map and location, where you could remove the floor via a switch at an u turn style hallway? His jump around that corner was groundbraking, and at some point I got it managed - what was the name of that Map, where you could jump around an edge :-D No one knows or getted managed from my friends... how often they folowed me, and fall into the lava.
      I'm so nostalgic right now.

      My experience was a little different. I’m also 38 but I grew up playing PC games only. Never owned a console of any kind. But I didn’t have a decent internet connection. I was on dial up until 2003, so multiplayer wasn’t really an option. The bots on Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena were a godsend for me. I’ve thought of trying Quake Champions as well as Doom 2016. Couldn’t bring myself to do it because I know the gaming community is crap these days.

    All the comments about "back then" reminded me on that one time the mains breaker went bang while I was absolutely concentrated and immersed into the fast paced gameplay of UT. I have been playing loudly on big boxes and it was dark outside. And then all of a sudden I was robbed of of all of my senses. It was dark and I couldn't remember where I was, what I was doing or in wich state I was (like sleeping or being awake?) like I've been created into life that very instant. It must be like that being hit by a flash bang. It took like 20 seconds for me to find out what happened, what I was doing, and even wether I was a boy or a girl or a bodyless entity floating in limbo. In reverse order. I did that by deduction actually, point after point, while sitting in my dark room. That was very weird :D .
    The chain of thought was basically like that:
    Darkness -> where am I -> WHAT am I -> I should see something...I think...do I even have the ability to see? ...I think so -> why is it all black then? -> are my eyes closed, am I sleeping or awake? -> my eyes are open and I think that I'm a fleshy being, not some bodless thing, still it's just dark, what's wrong? -> reasons for darkness: I'm still asleep or the light is out -> I'm not sleeping, my eyes are open, is this some kind of sleep paralysis? -> no, I can touch myself and move my arms, I'm definately awake and have my eyes open -> light must be out -> so I WAS sleeping and woke up -> not really, I'm not in bed, actually I'm -> feels around -> sitting on a chair? that's no normal situation. what lead to that? no wait, first: WHERE actually am I? -> feels around some more -> ooh, that's a keyboard...and a desk...and a computer, I think it's my room -> why am I sitting in my room in front of the computer while everything is dark and silent? -> maybe make the darkness go away to find that out, it's also creepy...light switch, yes oh glorious light switch! everything will be normal in a second -> stands up, stumbles through room -> switch *nothing happens* -> WHAAAAT?! maybe I'm dreaming after all and this is a nightmare...think, how did I get here, it must have something to do with the computer because I was sitting there -> oooh, I was playing UT, but what the hell happened? -> hmm, light not working, computer not working...everything is indeed fine and real (not unreal hoho!) and the perfect explanation for everything is: the breaker must have popped! tadaa!
    Now that was an experience...

    I particularly dislike many newer games for their weighty movement controls and overabundance of motion blur, emphasis of "filmic" experience. This just makes them feel unresponsive and clunky for me. Even if i run this crap on a $2500 PC at 144 frames per second. Meanwhile older arena shooters have zero weight on the movement controls. So does World of Warcraft as well. These games are 100% responsive and forget about any semblence of unnecesary realism.

    • @Xul
      @Xul 6 років тому +8

      Thanks, finally someone with a proper perspective. That is exactly my problem with most modern games ... Everything (especially movement) feels clunky, somewhat unresponsive and the screen is cluttered with useless shit while you have no way to run more basic settings ... (all those points also apply to QC from my perspective)
      Mods and command lines have effectively been removed in almost every game ... instead we get dumbed-down console-like menues and server-browsers are removed.
      Dirty Bomb is pretty much the only game left for me that has somehwat fast-paced Shooter a high skill ceiling and good steady flow of gameplay (though servers are shit currently and there is much wasted potential by the devs).
      Modern gamers apparently don't recognize and appreciate this stuff (good mechanics, great weapon balance) anymore ... They just want knive to trade, one-button-kills and some obnoxious twitch/YT moron playing "their" game. Games like Q3 or UT would be dead within weeks today ...

      I prefer Quake 2 on multi than Quake 3 Arena to be honest. Quake 2 was darker and had game mechanics closer to Unreal Tournament 1999, while Quake 3 Arena had too "eye-candy" colourful graphics and different game mechanics. I don't play Quake Champions & new Unreal Tournament 4 because i fucking hate microtransactions, even if they are "cosmetic only".

      "I played both UT99 and Q3A extensively, but always ended up falling back to Quake3." Same. UT was better in many regards, doing all sorts of fancy stuff with low gravity, that compression chamber, and whatnot. More weapons, secondary fire, different armour and shield types, more game types (assault etc). I also preferred UT for CTF.
      Q3A had a different approach, it tried to keep it simple and focus on the core. There's less quantity in how you can shoot, but more than UT it completely nailed its weapons. UT had the ASMD with two different fire modes you could combo, it had that rocket launcher that you could charge with several rockets or grenades, and it had less interesting weapons like that bio blob whatever gun and that shuriken throwing thing. Q3A had a rocket launcher that nailed rocket launching and was great for rocket jumps. It had a railgun that nailed what a railgun is about, it had a plasma gun that was a plasma gun, end of story. There was no different armour/shield nonsense, you just had three big numbers for health, armour, and ammo. There's beauty in this minimalism, and Q3A really made it work.
      Likewise, in term of game modes, Q3A focussed on deathmatch. As I said, there was much other stuff UT was better at, but for no-nonsense deathmatch, Q3A was king.

      Luck in PUBG is a factor yes, but not as big as you might think. You can have all the RNG in the world and you will still be shit in that game if you are lacking skill / knowledge. After all, Quake has some RNG as well like respawn positions after fragging someone. It might result in a snowball effect and giving you a win in the end.

It started when I watched the original quake professionals play the game, am I interest started to grow off of galena's totem placing. I also feel super at home having strafe jumping back.
    I remembered seeing something about quake champions a few years ago. It was some kind of advertisement, probably from GameSpot or IGN, and it mentioned that it was bringing back straight jumping. At the end I saw Bethesda tagged onto the credits and immediately I was devastated. I thought it was going to be terrible so I never kept up with the updates and news. So here I am now regretting the fact that I shunned it XD.

    Good video but there are some things I would add to this "review"
    1: The netcode and performance of the game is terrible and it hasn't been fixed for over a year.
    2: In QC the devs were able to unify movement from all Quake Releases in QC with the help of passive abilities (Anarki & Sorlag - Q1, Athena - Q2, Slash - Q2 etc.) I think giving old school players the ability to play QC like any previous Quake was worth mentioning.
    3: NA servers have awful waiting times in competitive gamemodes.
    Other than that I liked this video!

      I've never played Quake Champions but am a big Q3/UT fan from back in the day, and QC does seem a lot more complicated, with all the champions and abilities you have to learn, different movement for different characters, all the weapon skins and just general clutter. The game seems cluttered to me.
      Whereas Q3 (and to a very lesser extent, UT) is very simple - the character you choose basically doesn't matter at all, and all you need to learn are the 9 weapons and the map layouts and you're good to go.
      So I can understand why younger people who are used to fortnite, might be put off by QC - joining a server and seeing a bunch of guys bouncing and hopping around the map, very difficult to hit, and then dying out of nowhere; only to respawn and do the same thing over and over.
      I can see why they'd rather go back to these battle royale style games, where you have a big open map and just have to aim a hitscan weapon at a dancing opponent and whichever one happens to score the most hits (or who happened to find the better armour/weapon) wins.
      For me I am more used to arena MP shooters (been playing them since q3 in 1999) and I hated the battle royale style games my friends all got into. It ended up being, you drop into some big wide open map, spend 5 minutes scrounging around trying to find weapons, only to die in 2 seconds out of nowhere from someone you didn't see - or either that or I find an enemy in close quarters, I hit in 7 or 8 times, he turns around and hits me 3 times and I die, because he happened to find a purple gun and armour and mine was green.

    Found this today while searching for the original! I play QC to this day, got called a cheater three times *today* (and I identify myself as a noob, perhaps a veteran noob), the game exited EA (with no fixes since 2018) on 2022-08-18 and we all still hate how they mishandled the outsourcing of game's development, rushed the launch by 2 years and pushed the gambling lootboxes (I believe I am the world #1 collector, I have 2250 unopened lootboxes currently).
    By now we moved away from 3 in-game currencies and having to gamble everything to get an item, in favor of Fortnite style season passes and a normal store with cosmetics (which would be fine if they were all there, and not cycle every few months, and also, if you could just buy stuff from champion customization menu, instead of having to browse the stupid store UI... but the game never had someone with UX credentials look at it, one of the reasons it failed). It's really a decent game nowadays, such a shame they botched the launch this badly (I'd say even worse than QL's!) so not many people stuck around to see what it became.
    (I played Quake re-release today as well, the KEX engine is still crap and not only plays at 200 FPS on a 3080, but soft-locks you by not moving platforms/elevators sometimes, may I recommend FTEQW for playing the new episode, which itself is freakin' awesome! Oh and they included some other community SP map packs/episodes right in the game menu, which is absolutely amazing, not everyone is us, quaddicted readers, everyone else had no idea these existed!)

    HEY, Camping is a Legit strategy! Jumping around like a Bunny non-stop isn't the _only_ strategy.
    Eh. I expected this video to be fun like the other one.
    I enjoyed my time with Quake Champions but my computer isn't good enough to handle it, and I did enjoy that all characters had stats now it's just that... I didn't see any _point_ to a HD Remake of *Quake 3 Arena* since that's basically what it is if we get down to the nitty gritty, and unlike you, I find the removal of the BFG to be a bad thing, since this just ensures the Rocket Launcher is the top tier weapon to use - aside from personal preference. At least back in the day, even a less skilled player could potentially win a match by getting the BFG and killing all the rocket-jumpers which gave that player a sense of " _I did good!_ " and kept them playing and thus learned more.
    Also, I do love my Open World games, but I think you were making jabs against the... I forgot what the genre was called but games like pubq and fn. Which really is just the latest thing to nag about, back in my days, it was Call of Duty we nagged about.
    Good video overall, but I find the title somewhat misleading.
    It's more of a review of Quake Champions after all.

      Better than most, but you'll be fucked by the vets.
      TF2 is a slower game by far, with a generally more modern feel. I mean, it's still Source, so some of that old magic is there, but make no mistake, it's not the same game. It certainly isn't Walker and Cook's original from... what, 96? There's a lower skill ceiling here, on the gunplay end of things.
      Quake 1, but contrast, is much much closer to what you're getting. However, SP doesn't really prepare you: you won't have learned how to bhop, f'rinstance.
      Your primary advantage is basic skills: You know how to aim and shoot, you've worked with the LG, GL, RL, SSG, et al, and you know your way around things like Rocket Jumps.
      Your greatest weakness will be adjusting to an engine, physics, and loadout that are *just different enough* to trip you up. You'll feel like you're too fast or too slow, have too much momentum, and GL or RL shots may end up misaimed or mistimed. And the LG got a big nerf, too...

    • @nooneinparticular5256
      @nooneinparticular5256 6 років тому

      @@THB192 Yeah, I've experienced that, pretty much. When I went back to TF2, I was shocked with how slow I felt. And I gained a much greater appreciation for the front line. I can remember one instance, where I was headshot twice in a row, from different angles, instantly killing me, all within half a second of re spawning.
      If I have ONE major complaint, it's that the hard-mode bots need to stop acting like they have LMAOBox. And it was an awkward surprise, accidentally killing myself with the nailgun.
      And I've only be interested in playing it casually, and I've had some fun with it, despite how...sterile it can feel. In one way, it feels like all the comp TF2 fans got their wish, for it without any RNG. And I'll admit... it feels both daunting... and a little draining, getting repeatedly stomped by a pro.

    well it's a free2play game, lootboxes are standard. They're just cosmetics, not game altering powerups and they're not even that hard to get, plus there is a weekly set sale when you can get that cosmetic set. The only problem with quake is that it's too hardcore for the average fortnite/overwatch player.

    • @HansLollo
      @HansLollo  6 років тому +3

      I disagree with the "Just cosmetics" argument - and because I completely share Jim Sterling's view on this, here's him making some good points: ua-cam.com/video/Ce5CDrq4dGg/v-deo.html

    • @dancristian8948
      @dancristian8948 6 років тому

      I know Jim, I agree with him but his problem is with paid games having cosmetic lootboxes. Quake is just barely staying afloat it would be dead if it didn't make any money. If everything had a price tag people would just buy that and be done with it and the game would get a rapid influx of money and then... game over for the devs, unless they produce new cosmetics that keeps selling, and let's be honest how many speedos do you buy on Visor?. That would be no problem for a game like warframe that has way more players. They make a hat and sell it for 5 bucks to 100.000 players, that's enough money to feed the devs for a longer time. Quake makes a hat and sells it for 5 bucks to 1000 players, enough for a monthly payment for the dev team. If quake had loads of players, then yeah, lootboxes are a shitty move but idk, a f2p game like quake with such a low level player count. Does it even matter at this point?

    • @HansLollo
      @HansLollo  6 років тому

      I absolutely get that. But Quake Champions is kind of a hybrid in that regard. Up until a few days ago you actually had to pay a few bucks to get into the game anyway - and the "Free2play" model is not really very Free2play if you think about it. It's not just the Champions you can't use, also some of the game modes as well. Even with the recent changes on how to accumulate favor it's still quite a grind and inherently unbalanced for people that don't pay for the full package. And if you pay for the full package, you still have to deal with cosmetics/ingame currency. If I had a way to buy the stuff I want, I wouldn't be bothered by any of it. But gambling for them is just a pretty cheap tactic to get even more money out of people that *really* want something bad. I think it doesn't really compare to well thought through F2P models as implemented in games like Warframe for example.

    • @dancristian8948
      @dancristian8948 6 років тому

      I actually paid 30 euros for the full package mainly to support the devs and this my only concern with the game, the possibility for the studio to run out of funds. If Quake Champions was an EA published game it would have been canceled a long time ago. I don't know man, maybe I'm just naive and happy we have a new quake title that I'm prepared to overlook some of the business flaws.

    tbh for me quake(3; and even ql) has always been some kind of benchmark on where do i stand, where is my position in the playerbase. in quake, everything that counted was your amount of skill, positioning, movement, mapknowledge, timing and aim. if you got rekt, you could only blame yourself and no one else. it was true and honest, although it sometimes was quite hard to get buried -1:27 on dm6 or ztn. qc obviously takes that away by creating inbalancies through the characters, which i strongly dislike. i gave it a try but soon dumped it. the fact with the loot boxes ( which didnt exist when i played ) makes it even worse. not only because of the loot boxes itself, but it draws ( as you pointed out ) a young and delusional playerbase into the game, that have no place in quake.
    no offense here, but i wonder how much your expertise goes in quake when you speak of the bfg10k and that it was way too op. sure that is right, but in competetive play the bfg10k wasnt used, which renders your whole statement obsolete. that was the only argument where i scratched my head, otherwise its a good video and the intro made me laugh so hard.
    i play quake live occasionally and i know how hard it is to get new players stick to the game. i think the problem is not the game itself, since you can get above a mediocre level with half a year of practice. the problem is todays players have no patience and expect to reach god level in 10 hrs of gameplay, which they learnt from every other "shooter" they played.

    he's not wrong about quake being boring. you ever wonder why this specific type of arena shooter keeps dying with every single new addition? because it's outdated and nobody cares about it. it's repeptitive and it's not going to be resurrected ever. the only reason it even had a life is because there was literally nothing else than this style of arena shooter in the fps genre. every single game trying to be like this will die after the launch hype has settled down and only those couple hundred dedicated players will remain every time
    i mean i do love this style of combat and movement, i wish there was a singleplayer/coop, open world, looter shooter made like this with bhopping and strafejumping and rocketjumping. I've spent countless hours surfing and rocketjumping in tf2 (which is based on the quake engine) but this pvp crap? this small arena pvp fragfest for the sake of fragging? nobody gives a shit and idk how it's not obvious that there is absolutely nothing with the design of the game, it's the gamemode that is fucking garbage

      Audiences from the 90s are not comparable to today's anymore. Back then the markets were not as fractured as they are today, with developers focusing on bringing in many different kinds of people. A lot of those people might think they are core-gamers, but they are simply part of the mainstream. And Quake was never mainstream, given that it was a niche market even back in the day. It's no surprise the game doesn't do well. That is in no means any indication that it lacks in quality. @@alehnny I know about its fork :p it's too bad it's based on the worst Warsow versions, but hey, you're still free to code your own gametypes, so despite many critics I would have, it's still a win for me \o/
      I honestly dunno about the other game, I'll probably check it out soon, thanks (:

      @@alehnny and yeah, I've played xomotic and nexuiz for years, but loong time ago.
      I love the idea of a second fire like in UT, and the grappling hook mixed with that "jump boost" weapon - reaching 2k ups was so easy back then. But I dunno if it's still alive.
      Btw, since you seem to know quite some games... I remember that as a child I played to something that looked like q3a in gameplay, but it was more cadtoonish; it definitely was not Warsow cos it had a SP demo, and it included invisibility... I'm still looking for its name, you got any ideas? Looking inside my father's PC books is going to be such an asshle lol, and my brother has a shitty memory... It surely wasn't that game that had maps like reqbath, it was normal sized; just... More cadtoonish, though not as much as wsw

      @HansLollo  6 років тому +3

      Absolutely disagree. In OW, you neither have the mobility, nor the skill-ceiling you're dealing with in QC. Also the abilities (primary, secondary and specific weapon loadouts per class) in OW take center stage, while they are much less reliable in QC. It's Quake alright - and there's no win button to be found. You're either good or you're not.

    • @Banjo3440
      @Banjo3440 6 років тому

      Also, OW has a community with zero tolerance for mains and competitive mindsets.

    • @MercenaryOrangeTV

      Not to sound like an elitist but overwatch is all about paper rock scissors and ability spam. Sure QC does have its problems and balance issues but active abilities alone doesn’t win you the game 100 percent all the way. Gun play, health and armor stack do. And believe me, health and armor is a huge deal in Quake since Doom 1

    You seriously put controller requests as a bad thing and for babies? Not only was it selfish and very low, but it's full PC fanboyism at its worst. Can't you all get along? Seriously, stop it. If you don't like controllers, then don't mention them. I'm an expert with video game controllers, but I also played with a keyboard and mouse. What's wrong with open world games by the way? They're not bad, please don't put it along as a game for babies. I HATE microtransactions, why would you want them in?
    Anyway, Quake Champions seems nice, but it looks like a disappointment. It's just another multiplayer only arena shooter with no Quake 1 or 2 styled single player. Go download Quake Champions: Doom Edition instead. It allows for an actual single player, has no microtransactions at all, and features classic characters. Awesome mod, and great for both Doom and Quake fans.
