All the reviews would be like: "This game is so hard, i couldn't even reach the first boss, 3/10" "FPS Dark Souls" "The story line is pretty lame, and the controls a terrible, 5/10"
The game can't be hard if you have quick save and quick load The game can only be hard if it allows you to save only in certain spots that were pre-placed by creators

What happened was that games stopped being made for game fans and started being made for the other 6.5 billion people on the planet that couldn't hit the broad side of the great wall of China.
***** with saving game every 1 minute of gameplay any game can be easy... the point is to beat level without saving game, then even in the normal difficulty game can be chellanging. i remember playing some games like that with my father on my childhood, (because we didnt know how to save lol) it was really fun, especially when you died near end of stage, and then, you never knew how long some stage is. playing with saves is kinda... emotionless, no tension. some games onwadays, offer this, and are called "roguelikes" but is even more hardcore.
***** That's not "true" difficulty. It's easy to make a mode, where enemies are 100% accurate, shooting over any distances with zero delay or lag, always knowing where exactly the player is, and to top that - reduce player's health to like 10 percent from the start, see Bioshock's 1999 mode. What is hard for developers, is making enemies MISS in a realistic way, if you ever played with quake 1/2 bots and compared them with modern bots like in CSS, you should know that. What is hard for developers, is making *intrinsically* hard game, and by that standard dark souls is much harder than quake, where you basically have very few variations of monsters, that require very little training in how to handle them.
I cannot describe how much I hate that shit at the beginning in modern games. Why every single time a game starts I have to go through a bunch of (often unskippable) advertising of any company remotely involved before I can play? I already paid for the game! I don't care about these companies, I wanna play the game! They are already acknowledged in the credits anyway! And if anything at least make it brief!
crfstewarje Of course there are exceptions smartass, there always are, but the truth is that it is much more prevalent in modern gaming. And I do like and enjoy modern games, that's why I complain about having to go through such tedium to play them, otherwise I wouldn't even bother.
Thats because of consoles. MSony force the developers to do that. Otherweise they are not allowed to publish products on their plattforms. MSony want that because they make the most money with the licences for every game. So they want to sell as many games as possible. And thats their way to make sure, that even the dumbest individual will feel good enough to play. Thats the reason why all our beloved games get dumped down and levels get crippled etc. They call it "accessability". That the magic key word.
Ha, ha, absolutely brilliant. Love it. I'm an "oldie" too (now mid 30's been computer gaming for 25 years). The general "dumbing down" and increasingly treating PC gamers like dribbling idiots has been extremely obvious over the past 15 years. I don't want a "scripted cinematic experience" - I want a game with decent fun gameplay. We all know exactly what "streamlined for a more casual audience" means in reality...
Well... it's not that different from the original game... The new episode even has a challenge that old ones don't have Which is low ammo, many enemies
Bungie's next project began as a sequel to Pathways into Darkness, but evolved into a futuristic first person shooter called Marathon. Not only did it introduce the rocket jumping mechanic to gamers for the first time (then known as "grenade hopping") - Wikipedia
PseudoPlox ah quake, the game introducing the engine COD still ran on up to a few years ago and possibly still does, I don't keep track anymore. Like I Know they like recycling shit but a modified version of an engine from 1996/5? Goddammit Activision.
Fast paced? ehhh maaaybe if you are tracer or genji. Skillfull? NOPE. you dont even need a good aim to hit anybody. the hitboxes are twice the size of the model....
I actually think it's harder to hit people in Overwatch. In games like Quake and Unreal, you really feel a sense of accomplishment for learning the game and it feels skillful when you get kills. So, you actually want to hit your opponents. It's quite hard to hit your opponents in Overwatch when you don't have the will to even try.
Neither. Publishers found out about all those phycological tricks for monetization and the tool box for making money got bigger and bigger. And at some point making the actual game is the smallest part in actually designing the game, while adding all those bullshit things like achievements, dailies, lootboxes, endorphin kicks unrelated to the actual gameplay or gamer skill, etc became the main tools to hook a customer to a product. Making games itself has become secondary to all those ways that makes money. Publishers always had been greedy, but the methods are way more refined, the audience has a pretty high tolerance to bullshit these days and gaming is much more mainstream, so the appeal needs to be different for tripple A games anyway. There are still a lot of good games made, but they might be more niche than they had been 20 years ago and they never will make as much money as the blockbuster bullshit. Josh Strife Hayes nails it pretty well imho: ua-cam.com/video/g16heGLKlTA/v-deo.html
On the plus side, with titles like Dusk, Ultrakill, Amid Evil and technically, the last two Doom sequels (2019 and Eternal), we're seeing a resurgence of "boomer shooters", to quote GManLives. Anyone who's not exactly gifted in the reflexes department can stick with more mainstream releases, and we're seeing options crop up for those of us who like a hands-off approach.
You think? I think we had a great renaissance of classic style FPS. Doom 2016 and Eternal, Ion Fury, Dusk, Ultrakill, Amid Evil, Cultic, Turbo Overkill... Also the modding scene of the Doom community is more alive than ever, creating marvelous total conversions for free like Pirate Doom, Ashes 2063, new versions of Brutal Doom with a custom campaign, Aliens Eradication, Total Chaos, Myhouse.wad (not even counting the classics that we had before those)... You also have a great free campaign for Blood called Death Wish with new episodes every few years. And you also have great indie FPS with very interesting concepts like Cruelty Squad or Mullet Mad Jack. Oh and you also have great remasters by Nightdive studios. So I think it's a great time for FPS fans.

I'm gonna list the amount of this that's true for Doom 4 Unskippable company logos: Yes. Lame Options: No. DLC: Yes. All Easy Difficulties: Fuck No. Obnoxious Crosshairs: Not really. Move it messages: No. Messages telling you you can't go somewhere: No. Game telling you to shoot enemies: No. Lame shooting: Fuck no. Intense gun kickback: No. Return to Combat Zone messages: Fuck no. Easy/Lame boss encounters: Fuck no. So bottom line, Doom 4 isn't 100% completely perfect, but it's still really damn fun and it's waaaay better than what we could've gotten.
***** LOL you only played the first like 20 minutes and gave up. Anyone who's played the full thing knows that Doom 4 is one of the most hardcore games to come out in years and pays TRUE respect to oldschool shooters like Quake and Doom :)
I think you mean: Kickass shooting: YES Linear level design: Barely Hardcore soundtrack: Yes (Like you said, subjective) Weapons that feel powerful because of what they do to the enemies (Rather then making you pinball around all day): Yes. Optional upgrades that make you more powerful (Or you can ignore them), yes. And I'm guessing you didn't see the many collectibles and upgrades in the alternate paths (Or just forgot that the original doom's alternate paths worked in prettymuch the same way) Also, I would like to know what difficulty you played Doom on and how many times you died during it.
***** 1. I played the originals 2. You can see the hazards of the level well in advance, and I don't see what you mean by "places that didn't look like they would be blocked off" 3. How could you say they're linear when the maps are generally sprawling and containing multiple secrets and different paths? 4. I'm gonna call bullshit on that as on Nightmare, generally taking 1 or 2 hits would kill you.
***** They tell you where the secrets are if you use the map (And upgraded it to see the items), and it still excludes the classic maps. The only ledges I think you can't climb on seem to be the ones leading outside the map (Like a lot of adventure games), and the "Dead end" Nature of the map secrets is literally how the original doom(s) did it. Were you expecting a sandbox with multiple level exits?

The footage in the end is actually footage from a Quake speedrun titled Quake Done Quickest. Its really interesting for me because I casually speedrun Quake. But the vast majority of people that got the game didn't play it like that.
FpsGamer43 Regardless of whether or not most people don't play like that, it does in a way show off the prevalence of emergent gameplay that was in games like Doom or Quake that doesn't rally exist in most modern fps.

It's actually scary how true this video is. Halo 5 (a game that's part of a franchise that used to be unique, original and amazing) is going to have cosmetic aim-down-sights. It's actually very sad to see how the quality of games is getting objectively worse as time goes on.
srty srtyy m$ bought an 80pc game to push the original xbox. (nothing unique, original or amazing). what ground breaking have they done exactly in the years since. nothing. zero. halo two was crippled to be vista only! halo 3 was halo 2.5! money grabbing on the way. but what have they expanded upon. zero effort. I agree with you how scary it is. Quake was a pure gamers platform. Quake 2 should be considered as the first COD. (as in playing to the 'kids' (at least you had to aim back then) ) QuakeLive was a gamers platform, but not now what steam has on offer.
RevanBladeZ The ADS in Halo 5 isn't optional. There's no toggle for the classic zoom, and they've changed the way it functions by adding significantly tighter spread when aiming down the sights.
Hey, you should update this to 2013/14 where games have sidekick characters telling you how to solve every single part of every puzzle 50 times per minute and the camera flies away in every room to show you all the points of interest (or not), and where you only have 3 options in the menu on the screen at the same time, and where the screen effects are more abundant than the bullets fired, and everytime you can perform an action a message appears on the screen reminding you of the key for it, every time you kill something a message pops up with how many point you gained from it, and the HUD elements (messages and points included) take 80% of the screen. :) I would do it, but it would take a while until I learned to mod quake in the first place. Best I could do would be a HL2 version of it, which I knew how to mod once...
skaruts. All i have to say for you, is DO IT. Please do it and you will be one of the people helping in games getting better. If you do it, your video will get my "Like" to it. Please feel free to also check out my videos, since i have some very relevant videos also.
I don't know, sometimes I like to speed through FPS games, and sometimes I like the methodical approach of hiding behind cover and picking off enemies one by one. Variety helps.
Not really. Bioshock had a slower pace. In games like Half-Life and Quake, you ran everywhere, basically. Bioshock, took influence from early sci-fi survival horror game Systemshock, which had a lot slower pace and utilized the more RPG elements that were reflected in Bioshock's gameplay. Because of its roots in early survival horror, Bioshock's pace is a lot slower.
I wish they made more games like this nowadays... Unreal Tournament attempted to keep going, and did pretty well for quite some time. I just wish they would stop to poor state the FPSs are in now and continue Quake. It was one of the best games ever made in my opinion.
They better start developing it soon, cause I'm getting tired of all this CoD, Halo, and Battlefield shiz... Just the same old stuff over, and over, and over.... Just better graphics...
another thing.. i'd love to see Id Software make a sequel to Quake 3 Arena.. no cut scenes, no scripting, no voice acting.. just arenas with cool weapons and deathtraps to kill each other in ;)
Check out 'Doom 3 Alpha' Gameplay on youtube, it actually looks better then the final version! I thought Doom 3 was okay, the graphics were amazing at the time and I think the lighting gave it a good atmosphere, but it wasn't as action packed as Doom II I just hope Doom 4 is gonna be like Doom II, I pray to god every night they don't fuck it up!
oh I saw the alpha.. I even had a bootleg copy of it! lol it was definitely better than the final game. creepier and more atmospheric. honestly though i wonder if they didnt downgrade the graphics a bit because they knew they would eventually port it over to xbox. that's probably the main reason PC gamers hate consoles. Because we all saw a decline in the quality of PC games once the devs started aiming for the lowest common denominator
That would be nice that someone would step up to the task, of delivering a DOOM style mazelike fastpaced truly fun FPS. No-one has really even tried. I'm talking DOOM1-like game (fast movement, no ads, no regen, no sprint, no weaponlimit, no friendly npc's, no linearity, need to use keycards, need to solve puzzles, truly different weapons..). That would sell, i'm telling you. It would sell because no-one has even tried making a true FPS. All that has been released and while some have been good, none of them have truly tried to re-create 90's real FPS with todays amazing technolgy.
Alex Eny Hell yes it is. I hate all these new slowpaced consoleshooters where you have to sprint and then stop like an idiot so that you can ADS and hit something. I rather it be about pure skill and run&gun since it takes more skill to shoot while moving. No noob friendly "you gotta stop and aimdownsights to hit shit".
This is literally how i feel about the FPS genre today. I don't like to brag about my age on the internet, but i'm only 15 and I think games like Quake and UT are INFINITELY better to play than Call of Duty or Halo or whatever generic trash my gaming generation plays (I'll exempt Battlefield 4 from this shitty category due to its insane amount of content and admittedly cool weapons and vehicles.) Long live the old-school/arena FPS. This is why i'm glad the new Doom isn't total shit: it might not be CLOSE to the originals in terms of awesomeness but at least the single player feels like a fucking doom game. Not to mention a "proper" fps.
Made me laugh (something i rarely do), then strangely nostalgic by the thought of the correct fov (93? 102?), bunnyjumping, rocketjumping, teleporting and thunderbolting 3-dimensional from the air. But, old and wise: "The grass is always greener..." Someone would seriously kill you to obtain a todays low-cost computer, at that time.
+Jacob S :( you did'nt do the bunny hopping thing wtf that was at least half the fun!,i did it,Wait Your got to be kidding your messing with us right ?
we got a larger audience that's what happened, it just so happened that a majority of that audience are idiots. I'm 15 and when I go to school everyone is always bragging about how they have COD AW and making fun of those who don't have the most popular games and shy away from any game that isn't an indie horror game. This is where we are right now, and that's pathetic.
Joseph Charles You just gotta stand up to them and if there is anyway you can get them to try play Quake 3 Arena forexample online and you can have good time watch you friends get totally rekt :) Seriously though, quake is basically the most skillbased fps game in the world and if your friends got all their skills from cod, they cant do shit in quake.. But the opposite is possible though. Anyone who comes from quake to cod, isn't doing terrible.
Joseph Charles All the while they are missing out on fantastic things such as Freelancer, The good warhammer 40,000 titles, freelancer, the mechwarrior franchise, mass effect, and all kinds of shit. It makes me sad
GravityZero for me its not even that that gets me with mass erect. Its the sheer amount of laziness that is clearly seen throughout the trilogy if you pay attention. So many inconsistencies in the writing alone not to mention alot of non cohesive shit going on with the NPC's and characters and enemies
Lol.. just the other day, i was telling some raging squeeker about the days when i had to take my computer over to a friends house for a LAN party, to play quake against a few other friends at the same house. And, it took me eight hours to download the full game over a 56k modem. I had to do it over night to ensure that nobody would try to make a phone call and cause the download to cancel.
Quake was re-released a few days ago. The intro logos can be skipped very quickly, for DLC they added Quake 64s maps for free so far and they even made Nightmare even more difficult by making your HP cap at 50 which is pissing off some casuals. It's great. The level design and non-game pausing tutorial messages are untouched.
Correction, the nightmare skill was partially nerfed, monsters no longer have faster attacks and reaction times. I've heard they attempted to implement copper as nightmare skill, but it wasn't implemented very well.
@@AlphaEnt2 What? Nightmare is awesome now. Enemies don't just stand still being super predictable turrets and actually move around. It's brutal and I love it.
It's basically hard with 50% handicap, not that big of a difference. The new nightmare is ok, but i was sightly annoyed at how they messed up 15+ years of muscle memory, but that's on me though. It's like turning off fast monsters and respawn monsters on classic doom and limit hp to 50. Not my call, but i'll still have the endless sourceports that keeps the original skill intact. I still wonder if they'll add it back later as an optional skill on "level select" menu though.
Crazy to think that Call of Duty's golden age is as old to us now as Quake was back then. I'd love to see an "If Call of Duty was made today" video comparing the 2000s-early 2010s classics to the buggy mess Vanguard is today.
Just so you know bunny hopping was not intended. But rocket jumping was (as can be evidenced by a secret intended to be reached by it on one of the episode 4 maps of Quake 1's single player). If you look at some of the earliest LAN tournaments of competitive gaming history (such as Red Annihilation) most of the pro players (including Thresh) didn't even make use of bunnyhopping as it hadn't really been realized to its full potential that early into the genre. Rocket jumping however had been (as you will see multiple players rocket jump to the YA on maps like E1M2) but you won't once see them bunnyhopping. So before any of you bash Quake 1, it's flaws only added to the game. All of the new COD games (and most modern FPS games) have flaws that only hurt the game, not help. Tired of seeing people act like they know what they are talking about and either bash the 90's/early 2000's titles and/or this video without proper merit. Peace...
I sometimes wonder what's worse. The awful, easy, shitty and linear today FPS games, and its ever-growing 12 year old community or the smug, elitist (and dying) retro-gaming community and their games with a learning curve so steep from the start that even if you'd have to treat it as a part-time job to get good at it.
I don't understand this argument anyway, you complain when a game is too easy like games from today, but when you find a game that has a learning curve, you complain again and say its too hard? WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?!?!
This _could_ have been a clever satire of how much easier games are today than back in the day, but this video gets almost everything backwards and wrong. For instance: - No, graphics settings are most certainly _not_ simpler today than they were in the time of Quake. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Most typical PC first-person shooters today have a lot more graphical options than Quake did. - Difficulty levels in modern first-person shooters are not significantly easier than in the days of Quake. In some games they are in fact much harder (even frustratingly so.) - No, crosshairs are not today larger than they were in the time of Quake. Possibly the opposite. - No, gameplay is not interrupted by fullscreen hint views in any game I'm aware of. In fact, any kind of hints are actually relatively rare in modern games. - Not many games forbid the player from going "in the wrong direction" so explicitly. At most they might have eg. closed doors or impassable terrain. They certainly don't tell the player. - The concept of a "combat zone" that you had to remain inside happens in a few games, but it's mostly a dead horse trope. It's almost never used in modern linear first-person shooters. (It might be used in some open sandbox games.) - Bosses can be frustratingly difficult in modern games. There aren't many exceptions. This satire fails completely. It's not smart at all. It gets everything wrong.
***** It's exaggerated _in the wrong direction_. In other words, rather than being a satire of how modern games _actually_ are, it's satirizing the exact opposite. The satire doesn't work. It's a failure.
WarpRulez It's "satirizing" bad games made by greedy companies for stupid customers. The fact that you fail to grasp such basic concepts is astounding.
That's why games have difficulty level. 99% times it's slightly twitching health of monsters when it should actually be Easy for kids and beginners, Normal to be interesting and balanced and Hard to provide challenge impossible to casual players. And what I hate the most about new games is restrictions. As if allowing people to have fun and control the character freely is a new type of crime. Every dialogue takes control away, there are closed areas, not blocked by a natural obstacle but simply shielded with a holo-wall. One could say as long as companies make money off their games they should try and make it FOR gamers and what I see is any mod makes the game better and people buying DVDs are punished with tons and tons of security checks and ads. So to say, they do everything to kill own industry. Or... rather have done. It's just sad.
Ya most modern fps shooters suck and are slow as fuck. You want a game that plays and feels like quake, but plays like a modern shooter then go play Urban Terror. People still play that game by the thousands and guess what... its free.
+Qweekskowped they don't release games for like 5 years and they said that "online-only and multiplayer is the future" ...,i think valve already get affected(this was said by gaben)
I consider the late 80s to the late 90s to be the pinnacle of gaming. id Software was among those companies who made a difference. Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake were those 'must have' games upon release. The best of the best isn't going to come from EA or Activision anymore. It's those independent developers who have been heavily inspired by John Carmack and other pioneers who want to follow in the footsteps of greatness, rather than be another statistic in the failing capitalist system. Regardless of what EA claims about their service, their priority is to make money, not to make great games.
>nuff said.

The end statement was so cool man. "When I was your age, we rocket jumped all the way to school". Hahah
snake698 *IN BOILING LAVA*
I cannot describe how much I hate that shit at the beginning in modern games. Why every single time a game starts I have to go through a bunch of (often unskippable) advertising of any company remotely involved before I can play? I already paid for the game! I don't care about these companies, I wanna play the game! They are already acknowledged in the credits anyway! And if anything at least make it brief!
crfstewarje
Of course there are exceptions smartass, there always are, but the truth is that it is much more prevalent in modern gaming. And I do like and enjoy modern games, that's why I complain about having to go through such tedium to play them, otherwise I wouldn't even bother.
crfstewarje
WE COMPLAIN BECAUSE WE CARE
That´s why on the PC I google for every possible "no intro" fix or something like that.
"feh, those assholes are already in the credits!"
**skips credits**
Thats because of consoles. MSony force the developers to do that. Otherweise they are not allowed to publish products on their plattforms. MSony want that because they make the most money with the licences for every game. So they want to sell as many games as possible. And thats their way to make sure, that even the dumbest individual will feel good enough to play.
Thats the reason why all our beloved games get dumped down and levels get crippled etc. They call it "accessability". That the magic key word.
quake is one of the best games ever.
Absolutely !
Well yes... but actually no.
Not even close. Significant in game history though.
yes but some idiots think the game is bad because of the graphics
Jimmy Tsonga and the Shimmy Congas Nah it’s genuinely one of the best FPS games ever made
Ha, ha, absolutely brilliant.

Cause it ain't getting better, son
10 years ago now, things have gotten a bit better though!
Don't forget... every 10 metres will have a cutscene, flashback cutscene, or cutscene of a flashback cutscene.
When I first ran the Quake the 25th anniversary remaster, I immediately recolletcted this video and started laughing until I cried.
Well... it's not that different from the original game...
The new episode even has a challenge that old ones don't have
Which is low ammo, many enemies

Ah, Quake. The game that influenced Half-Life and Team Fortress, and the reason why we have rocket-jumping.
+PseudoPlox So they took the TF2 rocket jump from Quake?
+Qweekskowped Yes. Look it up if you don't believe me.
All hail the soldier
Bungie's next project began as a sequel to Pathways into Darkness, but evolved into a futuristic first person shooter called Marathon. Not only did it introduce the rocket jumping mechanic to gamers for the first time (then known as "grenade hopping") - Wikipedia
PseudoPlox ah quake, the game introducing the engine COD still ran on up to a few years ago and possibly still does, I don't keep track anymore.
Like I Know they like recycling shit but a modified version of an engine from 1996/5? Goddammit Activision.
I’ve always found this video kind of ironic, considering the first boss in Quake poses no threat to the player and is defeated by pressing buttons.
I honestly had to come watch this again after people told me Overwatch is a fast paced and skillfull game.
Fast paced? ehhh maaaybe if you are tracer or genji.
Skillfull? NOPE. you dont even need a good aim to hit anybody. the hitboxes are twice the size of the model....
Fast paced? Skillful? *wheeze*
this hurts very bad
i heard people saying things like "another trash mouse and keyboard fps" and "how can a fps be playable if their is no leveling system"
What really happened...people got dumber or lazier...and developers got greedier. Money > Game Quality
Josh Strife Hayes nails it pretty well imho:
ua-cam.com/video/g16heGLKlTA/v-deo.html
On the plus side, with titles like Dusk, Ultrakill, Amid Evil and technically, the last two Doom sequels (2019 and Eternal), we're seeing a resurgence of "boomer shooters", to quote GManLives. Anyone who's not exactly gifted in the reflexes department can stick with more mainstream releases, and we're seeing options crop up for those of us who like a hands-off approach.
This video aged like milk and wine simultaneously
I am convinced that somebody watched this video and say "HELL NO!" because now, in 2022, the rerelease is really good.
Holy shit! 12 years and its somehow only gotten worse.
Yup, we lost.
So... what do you guys think of the Doom 2016 Multiplayer Beta (Also the final game of course)
+Kai Moosmann (ScepticalSkull) Its good but the comunity is pure shit, look for c&c 4, the game is fucking awesome but the comunity killed it

in my days, we didn't had slowed down time to aim: we had enough skill to hit an insect flying at 10 km from our position... with a shotgun.

I need to make a video about Quake Champions...
Bethesda only published it. They did nothing with the development
It also called ADS
@@shade221 ?
@@shade221 How so? It pretty much explains everything you need to know quickly.
Plus, you can just turn in game tutorials off if you don't want them. That's what I did my first playthrough.
This video just became surprisingly relevant.
I'm gonna list the amount of this that's true for Doom 4
Unskippable company logos: Yes.
I think you mean:
Kickass shooting: YES
Linear level design: Barely
Hardcore soundtrack: Yes (Like you said, subjective)
Weapons that feel powerful because of what they do to the enemies (Rather then making you pinball around all day): Yes.
Optional upgrades that make you more powerful (Or you can ignore them), yes.
And I'm guessing you didn't see the many collectibles and upgrades in the alternate paths (Or just forgot that the original doom's alternate paths worked in prettymuch the same way)
Also, I would like to know what difficulty you played Doom on and how many times you died during it.
*****
1. I played the originals
2. You can see the hazards of the level well in advance, and I don't see what you mean by "places that didn't look like they would be blocked off"
3. How could you say they're linear when the maps are generally sprawling and containing multiple secrets and different paths?
4. I'm gonna call bullshit on that as on Nightmare, generally taking 1 or 2 hits would kill you.
*****
They tell you where the secrets are if you use the map (And upgraded it to see the items), and it still excludes the classic maps.
The only ledges I think you can't climb on seem to be the ones leading outside the map (Like a lot of adventure games), and the "Dead end" Nature of the map secrets is literally how the original doom(s) did it. Were you expecting a sandbox with multiple level exits?
*****
Oh, and there were multiple ledges I climbed on that didn't have green lights...
"HINT: This is a boss encounter! Be smart!" lmao XD
So, basically, it would be like Quake 4
Try again.. Last i checked, 2005 is not considered "today".
Hey, I'm only saying...
ssbj144 quake 4 was 2011
HHammer1000
lolwut :D
Steam release is 2011 but Quake 4 is 2005 because id wanted Quake to come also since DOOM came so they outsourced Quake 4 to Raven Software.

whoops ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
LMAO you really predicted the future with those intro videos!
I don't get it either. You'd think that they would have reconsidered that move, but nope... straight back to the predictable BS again.
@@HansLollo You'd think by now they'd just have a splash screen of "these companies own this" then let you play the damn game. They're punishing their most avid fans by forcing them to sit through that shit again & again.
I just deleted the videos from the folder and i'm kinda surprised it worked.
I wish i could delete the forced bethesda login though, i'm offline and i have to wait 20 seconds just to tell me connection error.
Booted up the quake remaster today and burst out laughing when I skipped the fifth or so video because I remembered this. Spot on 10 years ago!
So the 2021 remaster; the opening logos can't be skipped. You totally called it
I would honestly take those logos over everything else Bethesda could’ve messed up
But you can, just hit the Esc button.
So true!
Battle(non)sense do you still stand by that today now that the games market has matured in some aspects
That quake clip at the end looks thrilling and more entertaining than the tripe of today, enough to make me wanna play right NOW. But COD kids will whine because "it's old" and "teh garphics arent real nuff"
So based on what you say, someone should just really make that modern Old game (exactly what i have been saying also)? So the kids would say "omg diz gaims nu, nd has gaawd graffixz".
Y no autoheal?
The footage in the end is actually footage from a Quake speedrun titled Quake Done Quickest. Its really interesting for me because I casually speedrun Quake. But the vast majority of people that got the game didn't play it like that.
I like unreal graphics
FpsGamer43
Regardless of whether or not most people don't play like that, it does in a way show off the prevalence of emergent gameplay that was in games like Doom or Quake that doesn't rally exist in most modern fps.
...In boiing lava
If I were made today, then it'd just be a carbon copy of Doom 2016.
Not sure if it was intentional, but I love the subtle touch of how it looks like the player was using a gamepad rather than a mouse and keyboard. :P
Ooook, let's start with "console is for n00bz because i use pc".
Pasta DellaNonna Lol, yeah!
Where would you even get that from?
***** Starting at 1:19, imagine someone moving and aiming, not so accurately, with the sticks on an Xbox controller, then compare it to the end of the video where he's doing the accurate rocket-jumping stunts, a hallmark of the mouse and keyboard era. Again, not sure if the author intended this, but it sure fits with the rest of the video!
fountainhead It was intended =)
You forgot the dubstep.
And the hitscan weapons
tNEOXXI Define your version of hitscan weapons, since hitscan is what bullet based weapons are ever since wolf 3d...
what the hell is "dubstep" is it a dubbing device that forreners step on when they are recording their language translation of an english film?
Zelousmarineinspace www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1065442-dubstep-music-a-new-trend-for-video-game-trailers/
Dubstep is basically that "wub wub wub" music you hear in all the movie and video game trailers these days... especially in the dudebro games... the AAA games, CODs, Battlefields, etc. You know, in case you weren't being sarcastic...
EarthCrash Yeah, hitscan's been around ever since multiplayer's existed, really.
2022 you have to download a 50GB patch before the game is even playable.
Old school FPS > current crappy ones
I'm sorry but have you played Counter Strike Global offensive? TF2? No?
I still prefer the 1.6 version, when it was funny for real to me, quite frankly
1.6 still is great but Global offensive is polished to a mirror sheen down to the base mechanics
+Psycho Machinery If you like that, then you will like Counter Strike Nexon: Zombies
Its just CS with more modes, maps and better graphics. Its also running in the same engine and has every single feature that 1.6 had.

It's actually scary how true this video is. Halo 5 (a game that's part of a franchise that used to be unique, original and amazing) is going to have cosmetic aim-down-sights. It's actually very sad to see how the quality of games is getting objectively worse as time goes on.
***** Becasue they can do more than simply use it as a stress test. Why do you ask?
srty srtyy m$ bought an 80pc game to push the original xbox.
(as in playing to the 'kids' (at least you had to aim back then) )
QuakeLive was a gamers platform, but not now what steam has on offer.
***** cause of xbox one. halo anniversary editions, etc... What are they doing exactly to make this experience out-of-this-world?
Well the ADS in Halo 5 is purely optional since you can still play the way you always did. But i get your point.
RevanBladeZ
The ADS in Halo 5 isn't optional. There's no toggle for the classic zoom, and they've changed the way it functions by adding significantly tighter spread when aiming down the sights.
Aaaand today the first part of this video became reality, lol.

I would do it, but it would take a while until I learned to mod quake in the first place.
Brutal Difficulty and Breakneck speed. The way FPS was meant to be played.
I don't know, sometimes I like to speed through FPS games, and sometimes I like the methodical approach of hiding behind cover and picking off enemies one by one. Variety helps.
Colt Mason yup, Half life games did the story right
Even Half Life 2 still managed to do the classic formula pretty well.
So did Bioshock
Tip: Explore!
RETURN TO THE BATTLEFIELD
lol
9 years later and this still is true...
Technically, it got even worse; Microtransactions, unskippable cutscenes, and a pinch of woke.
I wish they made more games like this nowadays... Unreal Tournament attempted to keep going, and did pretty well for quite some time. I just wish they would stop to poor state the FPSs are in now and continue Quake. It was one of the best games ever made in my opinion.
They opened stated 5 years ago that they MIGHT pick up on Quake 5, that they had the idea it just never got put into development yet
They better start developing it soon, cause I'm getting tired of all this CoD, Halo, and Battlefield shiz... Just the same old stuff over, and over, and over.... Just better graphics...
We could just go and steal the paperwork for the game and make it ourselves?
Well, I am in Drafting and Design, so I'd have a basic understanding of how to do things.
Jessy Wallace
That will help you make game levels. Now just find a coder and an animator and make a game :)
another thing.. i'd love to see Id Software make a sequel to Quake 3 Arena.. no cut scenes, no scripting, no voice acting.. just arenas with cool weapons and deathtraps to kill each other in ;)
Check out 'Doom 3 Alpha' Gameplay on youtube, it actually looks better then the final version!
I thought Doom 3 was okay, the graphics were amazing at the time and I think the lighting gave it a good atmosphere, but it wasn't as action packed as Doom II
I just hope Doom 4 is gonna be like Doom II, I pray to god every night they don't fuck it up!
oh I saw the alpha..
You should check out Xonotic. It's a nice game in the same genre.
Have you heard of Quake Live? It's much like Quake 3 Arena and it's browser based. It's also free as far as I know.
brando92711 Congratulations, Quake Champions looks great
The funny thing is, the "Remaster" that was released has just about the same amount of intro videos lol.
IKR? And all the account crap. Hilarious
1,264 CoD players can't handle this level of awesomeness
The people who made dark souls should make an fps game. Now that is a game I would buy.
FromSoft did sorta made a shooter. It's a Mecha shooter though. Look up Armored Core.
They did....
ssbj144 It's not about fast-paced
Alex Eny
Hell yes it is.
I used to be a game developer that did not do DLC in their games, just like you...
Until I took a EA aquirement to the knee.
Quake 1 maps design were master piece, lots of hidden ways to complete them. now you have one way to complete games.
Doom 4 is nearly perfect.
Ikr. The only thing missing in Doom 4 is rocket jumping haha
i'm a sperm still in my father's testes and i hate the new generation of shooters
Same here, I thought halo was the best for a long time until I decided to try out doom.
what aout the shitty leveling system?
Well, this aged pretty...
Well.
Barack Obama You the one judging someone over a UA-cam comment, lol.
Barack Obama And you must be a terrible person to give somebody shit over that.
If Quake was done today (10 more years later), there would be monetization, goofy dances to unlock, double jump, a battle royale, and a grapling hook.

Funny.. but this so relevant today... Given the fact that the Remastered version is more or less... THIS.
ok how?
we got a larger audience that's what happened, it just so happened that a majority of that audience are idiots.
Joseph Charles yep. skins and shit make ppl think they are special.
Joseph Charles All the while they are missing out on fantastic things such as Freelancer, The good warhammer 40,000 titles, freelancer, the mechwarrior franchise, mass effect, and all kinds of shit. It makes me sad
xaneks578 i find Mass Effect boring :/ its barely RPG -.-
GravityZero for me its not even that that gets me with mass erect.
Almost ten years later, and it has only gotten worse.
We're completely outnumbered because people today think this is normal.

+Therapyx Ha. There was another Doom + CoD parody video. One of the achievements? Looking at an in-game KFC & Taco Bell ad for a few seconds.
Quake was re-released a few days ago. The intro logos can be skipped very quickly, for DLC they added Quake 64s maps for free so far and they even made Nightmare even more difficult by making your HP cap at 50 which is pissing off some casuals. It's great. The level design and non-game pausing tutorial messages are untouched.
at least on PC you can just delete the videos - though they reappear with every game update.
@@InnuendoXP there's a launch option command to skip them too
Correction, the nightmare skill was partially nerfed, monsters no longer have faster attacks and reaction times.
You predicted Halo ADS lmao
RAMIREZ,
GET TO THAT SLIPGATE
Crazy to think that Call of Duty's golden age is as old to us now as Quake was back then. I'd love to see an "If Call of Duty was made today" video comparing the 2000s-early 2010s classics to the buggy mess Vanguard is today.
rocket jump generation i salute you !
Peace...
We had no idea how much worse it would get
Now we just need “if quake was done today today”
Today today today, luckily we got a faithful remaster.
No need to fix what ain't broken :P
@@AlphaEnt2 yeah ik, i've been playing through Dimension of the Machine
I sometimes wonder what's worse.
The awful, easy, shitty and linear today FPS games, and its ever-growing 12 year old community or the smug, elitist (and dying) retro-gaming community and their games with a learning curve so steep from the start that even if you'd have to treat it as a part-time job to get good at it.
i am 12 years old and my one fav games are doom
hmm i've played a lot of old games and not one of them was really hard.. Have you considered that maybe .. hmm... you are Dumb ????
I don't understand this argument anyway, you complain when a game is too easy like games from today, but when you find a game that has a learning curve, you complain again and say its too hard? WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?!?!
"part time job"
Then games are just too hard for you. Please stay in your casual cod fests.
napukapu
Tell me, how many hours more or less do you have to invest in Quake to be good?
Graphics On/Off LoL
Still coming back to this
*IN BOILING LAVA*
LOVE it. You had me in stitches by 0:46
This _could_ have been a clever satire of how much easier games are today than back in the day, but this video gets almost everything backwards and wrong. For instance:
- No, graphics settings are most certainly _not_ simpler today than they were in the time of Quake. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Most typical PC first-person shooters today have a lot more graphical options than Quake did.
- Difficulty levels in modern first-person shooters are not significantly easier than in the days of Quake. In some games they are in fact much harder (even frustratingly so.)
- No, crosshairs are not today larger than they were in the time of Quake.
(It might be used in some open sandbox games.)
- Bosses can be frustratingly difficult in modern games. There aren't many exceptions.
This satire fails completely. It's not smart at all. It gets everything wrong.
Ignorant much?

Please elaborate.
It's over exaggerated on purpose. Nothing in the video should be seen as literal as you interpreted it.
*****
It's exaggerated _in the wrong direction_.
Insurgency did a great job, now it's Ground Branchs turn. Please let the mainstream die and make the good games come back.
Please...
Ya most modern fps shooters suck and are slow as fuck. You want a game that plays and feels like quake, but plays like a modern shooter then go play Urban Terror. People still play that game by the thousands and guess what... its free.
First watched this video in 2015 and I have to say, it gets more right every year. Sadly.
Sad but true. Games these days are nothing but overhyped and over-budgeted crap.
Eh, better than the buggy and broken crap 3rd party developers would release to get a quick buck off of franchises.
+iam16bits I hope Valve doesn't get affected by it.
Regardless of what EA claims about their service, their priority is to make money, not to make great games.
>nuff said.
If you are UNDER brony...Is it possible to encounter UPPER brony?
Just a name, I used to be short as a kid, so people called me "underdog". Now I'm about average but the name kinda stuck, so I named my YT channel Underbrony.
The UnderBrony Naaah, this is some brony trickery! I know you ch33ky creatures! TELL ME YOUR SECRETS!
Nope, I used to name myself Blank Flank on UA-cam (MLP's name for ponies who haven't found their purpose in life / special talent yet). But now that this doen't apply anymore, I changed it to this. There's no trickery or anything. Thats just a personal anecdote
You are taking this too serious
One of the best UA-cam videos out there !
