One of the best scenes in the series. Brought it all together right here. The culmination of so many storylines, glad they mentioned Veritas too. That storyline was the best part of season 7.
Lex and I had a similar parent. You find that with children like us who had parents like them that we become philosophical. Lex suffered. Some of the worlds greatest philosophers suffered at the hands of their parents. Franz Kafka being one of the most famous.
@@stavrosgiannaros7041 I can relate too, except that my father wasn't educated enough to quote literature like Lionel did, so he just screamed like a drill instructor instead. Still, I've always been a deep thinker and more philosophical than most people I know. That doesn't mean I'm one of the great ones, but I can understand how they became the way they are.
This is why Smallville's version of Lex is always going to be the best. We got a decade of seeing these characters evolve together and Lex, in his own strange way, still sees Clark as a friend. I've always enjoyed the Superman stories where Clark and Lex are portrayed as having been childhood friends. It makes their story all the more poignant because, deep down, Lex is still trying to push Clark to be the best he can be and Clark is still trying to save his friend. No two actors portrayed that dynamic better than Michael and Tom. They were, hands down, the best Superman/Lex Luthor pairing in history.
@@StarWars_DC_Channel2024 They may be on opposite sides but it's pretty obvious that they both still care. I think Lex cares more than Clark though and probably always has. His story is sad and unfortunate. Lex was always my favorite chatacter... It's nearly criminal he never got the love he deserved.
I disagree. I think deep down lex knew his destiny no matter how hard he fought it. Him subtly telling Clark to let superman take this was his last but of humanity
John Laurence Chan I agree. Clark did his best to save Lex from himself and the evil Lionel seemed to infect his children with. Lex once said that their friendship kept his evil at bay; he saw Clark as the person he wanted to aspire to be. But his baser instincts and his need for power and control and an obsessive destructive need to uncover and exploit Clark's secrets, rather than respect his right to privacy, completely obliterated that trust they shared. Clark was right when he also said Lex had a chance to move away from the past betrayals and feuds, but he flatly turned it down in favor of his grand delusions.
That final line, “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you, Lex.” Heartbreaking. That final smile, morphed and twisted, is terrifying. Smallville low key had one of the best finales in TV history.
They had a horrible finale. But… they absolutely gave Clark and Lex the best send off. This scene is every moment of the series between them hitting its peak. It was so good to see them together again. As a whole a great series. Still one of my top choices. But the last season was a rough go.
I loved this ending. Probably the best they could've done for the Clark and Lex characters. Both knowing they were going on to become enemies yet there's this mutual respect there, a certain understanding that nobody but them will ever relate to. And it offered a tiny crack in the door for redemption for Lex if he ever went that route. I thought it was very cleverly done.
Michael Rosenbaum and the writers behind this Lex UNDERSTOOD Lex Luthor. Sure it started out as hatred and jealousy but then it became not about destroying Superman but improving him so in turn he would challenge Lex and force Lex to improve. Clark so vehemently denied his destiny as Superman and it's Lex who forced him to become the greatest hero, and in turn it forces Lex to try and become more powerful to outdo and then vice versa.
@@JamesCPotter13 no it makes it better. After the mine white pill have a subconscious hatred for Superman and he won't know why and that will just add to his obsession and hatred of him.
No argument here. Can you believe Rosenbaum sees flaws in his portrayal of the character. Gave Lex something every other depiction couldn't a relatable character arc.
Tragic and sad how Luthor's voice breaks at 2:15 when he says ''because of each other''. There is still a part of him that would love nothing more than to stand next to Clark and be his friend. That small part of him laments the way his relationship with Clark from now will be defined by hatred and being an enemy. A psychologist would have a field day with this guy. Lex desperately wants a relationship with Clark, any kind of relationship even if that means he has to be Superman's arch enemy.
The irony is the privilege that Lex was born into gave him opportunities to be great in ways that Clark never could, to make a difference in more lives than Clark ever could. He COULD have, in his own way, been greater than Superman. Instead, his fears, his desires, and his envy sent him down another path.
+NC Quadraxis Yes, partly because of his father, but just like Lionel, Lex's greatest flaw was obsession and greed. That's something he never could overcome and for a time, Lionel overcame it and died for it.
Ronnie Derrell Personally, I still think he would've gone down that path... why? Because it killed him how Clark didn't use his powers the way he though Clark should use them.
Ronnie Derrell I found the scene perfect, to be honest. He's never been jealous of the powers. It's what he does with him or lack of usage, anyway. That's just this interpretation of these two enemies.
Now, this is terrific writing. It's so compelling that Clark's greatest enemy reassured him at his greatest time of need. However, Lex only did that because he desperately needs Clark to live so that their rivalry can exist.
The moment when Lex says we will be both great men because of each other you can still tell the Lex still see's Clark as a brother such great acting such a great scene .
Oh year I think he does hate him your right he does but there is still brother respect there it's in his voice. The hope the friendship they once had you can see it's still lingers but the reality of it is the they will never be friends again like Lex say's they will be great men because of each other .
Indeed your right even though there has always been that distance that uncertainty between them both developing there friendship though knowing in the back of there minds that each other are keeping secrets .But in the end the still have mutual respect they are 2 sides of the the same coin but as you said there is a lot of hate there on both sides and always will be .
Their friendship is what saves them in adult life as they know they can"t kill each other as they would only be killing each other. In away they need each other to keep the other safe. They know each other too well and for too long. In short they know each other's secrets and will protect them out of mutual respect.
This is such a fascinatingly subtle scene. Lex is low-key telling Clark, "You've pretended to be something you're not for _long enough._ The world is ending, and humanity needs you to be the Hero that you were meant to be. And if I have to be the Villain that _forces you_ to be that Hero, _so be it."_
JUST COMPLETED THE 10TH SEASON & ITS TRUE. IF YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE TO BE THE HERO THEN I WILL BE THE CHOSEN ONE TO BE YOUR GREATEST ENEMY. ''Yes Mr. Kent , I'm the VILLAIN of the story.''
You really can't compare these 3 portrayals of Lex Luthor the greatest criminal mind of our time... Our time... Our time... Because they were all meant to be played in different ways by the people who wrote for them. Each dis a great job at the way they acted our their lines and scenes.
It doesn't surprise me that Tom and Michael are still good friends. They always worked so well together. I don't think there will ever be a better Clark and Lex pairing.
They have a weekly Smallville rewatch podcast called Talk-ville where they go over every single episode in detail, sharing their memories. They will begin Season 3 on July 13th.
This was a pretty moving scene actually, even though this scene essentially ended any small chance of a reconciliation between the two who are now both set on their paths of being Heroes and Villains, I liked how it showed there was still a mutual respect between the two characters, Lex even reassuring Clark that he could save everyone.
That was my yearbook grad comment "I used to think it was our families who made us who we are, then I hoped it was our friends, but if you look at history all the great men and woman of the world have been defined by their enemies."
i love how they are simultaniously being friendly and antagonistic. how Lex is basically being his season 1-4 self, he is being a friend and supporting Clark, saying you can do this man, you have to do this man or else you and me can't spend tghe rest of our ives trying to kill each other
"I'm sorry I couldn't save you Lex." After 10 years of Clark confronting Lex, Lex having a monologue and Clark staring dumbfounded with no comeback, Clark finally gets the last word and it's perfect. It sums up what Superman is all about. Superman knows that Lex Luthor could save the world in more ways than Superman himself could ever dream of. Luthor wants a world without Superman but what he never understood is that Superman wants the same thing with one slight tweak - Superman wants a world that doesn't NEED Superman and he knows that Lex, if he could get past his own ego, could create such a world.
“What killed me is you didn’t even want it. You fought it… you hid from it! I would have taken it and relished it and embraced it!” The truth is Lex ALWAYS wanted Clark’s powers. Lex already had the super genius brains & intellect, but he knew that if he possessed Clark’s physical abilities, then he would truly be the greatest man alive. Lex’s innocence and potential to do good in the world was beaten out of him by his psychotic father. And in this scene, there’s no more “friendship” between Clark & Lex. It’s now the first conversation between superhero and supervillain. Lex even acknowledges it, saying that they have a destiny on opposite sides of each other. Clark’s last words of “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you Lex” is an appropriate closing of the Smallville book. Clark admits defeat after years of trying to help Lex.
@@Voysh2Voysh69 It wasn't beaten out of him by his father, there's no excuse, his decisions are his own, other people can influence us but influence is not control. He had other influencers and rejected them. He chose evil
He wanted him to share his secret with him. But in reality Clark told basically no one, the ones who knew found out on their own and chose to help out. Even lois found out on her own she just hid it to give him a chance to tell her on his own.
@@ethosterros9430 At 1st Lex was busy as hell putting out fires that his dad set, cleaning up Lionel's messes. He was a tad more idealistic, maybe slightly naive.
@@radrixx001 The entire build up to Doomsday was great much better than BvS but the final battle was anticlimactic and the CG wasn't the best but than again they didn't have the budget or technology of BvS. If they did they would have put BvS to shame.
Lex putting his hand on his shoulder is very co fusing as it should; you can't tell whether he's offering support as the friend he was, or he's pointing out that he's the real hero that the world needs, thus competing again. Brilliant performance by Rosenbaum.
The thing about lex is that he's human and like all us humans is that we are all forgettable it's saddening to say but him killing clark will be one of our greatest feats because if we don't at least kill one alien then what chance do we have if we ever got to go into space and see all the other aliens.
I think it was lex’s last human act. Lex had accepted who he was destined to be. Now Clark just had to and lex was using his last human trait to nudge Clark in the right direction. Without Superman there is no lex luthor. Lex needs Superman just like Batman needs joker
It wouldn't have made sense for them to be friends in Dawn of Justice...Clark was a farm boy who was lost in his way and didn't have a purpose until he became Superman and the world gave him a purpose 2 years later, an angry and abused Lex Luthor hates the way superman represents God or a godlike figure and wishes to either be above him or do away with him. Lex didn't hate superman as a person but he hated what he represented because Lex had no hope in his life
pokadotty3554 No, what I meant was the way this Lex was portrayed once he became a villain. That should have been in Dawn of Justice. The Lex we got, I just could not take him seriously. They wouldn't have to do the friendship thing, but the villain mentality was perfect in this show. That make sense?
Rich Tannis yeah but that villain mentality took years to make how were you going to do that in a 3 hour long movie. Plus I love the show but this lex was just cunning but not a genius, in the comics lex has never needed help from anybody be it mechanics, biology or any other field of knowledge. Plus one major thing about lex is that he figured out that Clark and Superman were one in the same just refused to believe it on the fact that he could not comprehend how someone that powerful would just want to be seen as a mild mannered person. Oddly enough the lex you got in Dawn of Justice was inspired by a story in which clark and lex became friends in highschool and the lex people wanted to see was a lex that met Superman when he was already an adult.
One of the greatest rivalries of the all hero-villain mythologies.....smallville had its flaws especially in its last 3 or 4 years....but this relationship, the Lex Clark dynamic, that could not of been better
@@AnnaBellaChannel it was Lionel's obsession with the traveler casting his own son aside for him alongside wiping Lex's memory that created their initial bond that led it astray from what it once was
@@galslovveme I actually had the chutzpah to hope that this version of Lex AND Clark took place in an alternate universe / reality where Lex remained ( relatively ) good.
I have watched this show so many times and this video maybe a 100 times, I love it i waited so long for this moment. you can't have Superman without Lex, " Hello Clark, can't say I love what you've done with the place!" I got so excited i almost cried lol "Lex" .."you still say it the same way, astonishment, mixed with a hint of dread, yet with a hopeful finish" epic forever
Rosenbaum is such an underrated actor. Both he and Tom. I saw them at Salt Lake Comic con a few years ago and they are so much fun together. They had everyone crying from laughter. I love that Lex is has finally accepted who he is but there's still this dynamic of friendship between them. Maybe not friendship but brotherhood. Lex is clear about his intentions but he also has this faith in Clark. He's very brotherly in this scene. There's so many layers to this scene. I hated this finale but every scene with Michael was absolute gold.
Madara Marc Exclusive fucking right man he is was and will forever be the only Lex Luthor I don't understand why Hollywood didn't cast him I know it would be a bit weird as a second Lex Luthor in a movie but still man this guys fucking Legend
SPOILER ALERT I love Lex's line about Clark having powers and not embracing them. Despite the mind blank that's done on Lex that line truly defines why he would be Superman's greatest villain. Despite everything that Lex has (power, money, etc) There is someone more powerful than him. He can't comprehend that. He considers himself to be the balance of good and evil.
shanemerrigan1994 The relationship between Luthor and Superman is one of the most interesting in comics. Crucial to understanding it is that Luthor is the best of humanity and would be our natural leader were it not for Superman. As our natural leader he would do an enormous amount of good and be willing to make necessary sacrifices to achieve greater ends. And then a God (Superman) comes from outer space and makes a mockery of every sacrifice that Luthor has to make. Because Superman does not need to make the sacrifices that humans must because of his god-like power. He can afford to have a naive childlike view of Good and Evil due to his powers. He makes a mockery of humanity's achievements and sacrifices merely by his existence. And that's where Luthor's rage (at least in part) stems from. From being sanctimoniously talked down to about right and wrong by a God who never has to choose. Great show
+ooshgasm It's quite ironic. Lex Luthor wants to be a god among men and Clark is already a god among men, but wants nothing more to be considered one of us.
I agree with u on that the first 4 seasons when they were friends were awesome when they became enemy's in season 5 it was sad to see the friendship end but at the same time it was cool to finally see the rivalry when Clark punched lex I was like no and awesome all at once
for me this problem kinda came out of nowhere.. similar to the relationship of Clark and Lois, which seemed pretty forced to me (at least at the start). It was like from one moment they were good friends and in the next Lex was desperately in love with Lana.. I think the greater problem were really the many lies between Clark and Lex that shook their mutual confidence until each of them just saw bad intentions behind anything the other one did - even if it wasn't meant that way.
My favourite part of this show is that it became as much an origin story for Lex as it was for Superman. MIchael's performance was top notch. This relationship was the heart of the show
most tv shows, when the villain and hero starts on a 5min monologue/philosophical speech it gets pretty boring, but in smallville EVERY speech by the luthurs were GOLDEN!
I love that even though this is the beginning of Superman/Lex rivalry, Lex is a friend one last time that gives Clark the encouragement to become Superman.
The development of Lex Luthor in this series was awesome. Michael gave up the role, but then returned for the finale of the series, and in an epic way.
Michael was by far the best lex luthor ever played in t.v. or movies yet including animated. he single handedly drew me into the show as a hardcore fan!! I'd watch every new episode just to see what he had in store lol Michael actually made he a bigger fan of Luthor by his role he was fucking great!!! still the best so far by far I'd say
This may be true. Perhaps he could have played a serious Lex. Regardless, to me, both actors seem too young for the role of Lex Luthor, though perhaps the Smallville actor may have aged sufficiently to have done justice to the role in BvS.
I was definitely VERY frustrated at first. But upon rewatching "Finale", I realized that Lex's memories are probably still there, just buried in his subconscious. There are clues that suggest this, and the "Smallville: Season 11" comic that is out right now confirmed my theory recently. Lex said that he hates Superman but is not entirely sure where the hatred comes from. "Maybe I knew him before the mind wipe." So that means his arc on the show was not erased. Just repressed.
The main characters in this entire series were just brilliant. The acting, the philosophy, the good vs evil. I am thankful this series was made. While it lost some of its appeal from series 8 it taught me so much about life.
just like clark was destined to become superman, lex was destined to become the villain. however much they tried to fight it throughout the seasons, it was their friendship and later battles that would push them into embracing their respective futures

Love how the person who gives him the peptalk to stop the apocalypse wasnt Lois but past best friend/now sworn enemy who he thought was dead for good. Really solidifies that their story is still at the beginning of a long twisted road.
One of the best Lex Luthors without a doubt. I just didn’t understand this version of him. He was a self contradictory person. He didn’t want to be like his father, to fall into the darkness. But he took every step along that path. He could have been happy. He could have everything he’s ever wanted. The life Clark had. A family built in love not legacy. And he acknowledges Clark is a hero. He’s not a threat to humanity, he’s the best hope for it. But even then he clings to the darkness of his heart.
I am Japanese. In Japan, this drama is only known to those in the know, but I am a fan of Lex. If I hadn't discovered smallville, I might not have been interested in the character of Lex Luthor. In that sense, Michael Rosenbaum is one of my favorite actors.
I say the first 3. The first 3 seasons had a brilliance that was lost afterwards--there's just something in the quality of the show that just never returned. I think season 4 lost that magic because of a premature introduction of Lois. They could've introduced her and kept that brilliance, but the problem is she appeared way too many times for a character they had no role for and who had nothing to do as a character and one who they were not ready to start developing other than pairing her with Clark. That's why that season was full of fillers. Sure we had gems like Transference & Onyx (notice how Lois wasn't in them), but the rest of the season was pretty lame. The witch plot was also really stupid and was only done to include Lana in the stones plot, which should have been the focus of that season. In the end, the stones plot was ruined because of too many fillers and because of Lana's inclusion in it. If you watch the first 3 seasons you'll see a very subtle progression of Lionel & Lex regarding kryptonite, meteor freaks and alien technology. I remember Lex was at his computer when he read one of Chloe's Torch articles on kryptonite and its effects. Then I think it was in Craving when he learned about Dr. Hamilton and his experiments on moon rocks and hired him to study the meteors. Then there's Jitters where Lex learns about Lionel's Level 3 experiments. As the season goes on, we learn other things like Lex buying a particle accelerator that he's hiding from Lionel in Kinetic, Lex's old nanny Pamela dying and leaving him shares of his mother's stock, Lionel making an offer to move Lex back to Metropolis so he could keep a closer eye on him and Lex refusing to move. Lionel then sends Dominic to find out what Lex was up to and Lex still evades him. And then he pays off that reporter Carrie Castle to do a hitjob on Lex and he again weathers the storm and turns the tables. Finally with no options left, Lionel closes the plant down and Lex fights him, ultimately setting up an employee buyout and uses the shares Pamela Jenkins got from his mom & left him to buy the plant & turn it into Lexcorp. Lionel gets injured by the storm and uses his injury as an excuse to stay with Lex and find out what he's up to. It doesn't take long for him to be told by Dr. Hamilton about an alien ship and was even taken to his barn and felt it and the octagonal keyhole with his hands when he was blind in Dichotic. The very next episode, Red, Lionel is a blind witness to Clark shooting a gun that he said was fired by the rogue agent who was after Jessie's dad, but at the end of the episode Lionel is seen playing with the stray bullets that Clark fired into his own hand, knowing that there was something special about Clark because the bullets should not have been loose as they were if they were fired normally but instead lodged into a surface or person. That journey of how Lionel found out about Clark being special was a nice & subtle path that was brilliantly written and along the way other brilliant scenes happened as well stemming from Lex's hiring of Roger Nixon who found that crop duster Eddie Cole whose testimony of the day of the meteor shower led to Lex finding the octagonal key. Lionel & Lex kept learning more & more about the alien presence in Smallville as the Kawatche cave was discovered and as Clark learned more & more about himself as well. And the more Lionel learned, the more obsessed & dangerous he got. The pinnacle was in season 3 when he got his hands on the blood sample from Clark & Morgan Edge was introduced. The writing behind Lionel & Edge & their history, Lionel's murder of his parents, Lionel's liver disease, Lionel using Clark's blood & the cave to save himself, and all that stuff with Julian & Lex's memories of his childhood and his erased memories from when he learned Clark's secret are unmatched for the rest of the series in terms of the writing quality. The Shattered-Asylum plot was just spectacular. I also loved how proactive Clark was in those days and how Chloe did not know his secret and do what she did later on (when she became his brain as they made Clark incredibly stupid & unable to think for himself).
Masterful! Rosenbaum didn't lose a step. The tragedy of Lex Luthor is such a fascinating tale throughout this series. He knows he's not the hero, but in every fiber of his being, he believes he deserves to be. Thus, why Lex is a great antagonist. He believes he's in the right, even by doing wrong. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you, Lex" is purely heartbreaking and the note their story had to end on here.
When Clark tells Lex he's sorry he couldn't save him, he was also apologizing to Alexander, Lex's conciousness in the form of his childhood self. Clark made a promise to Alexander when he was inside Lex's mind in season 7 that they would never stop being friends as long as Alexander never stopped fighting to bring Lex back to the side of good. Clark felt bad because he couldn't keep his promise to Alexander anymore. Lex was too far gone now, there was nothing else Clark could do for him anymore. At this point, Alexander was dead
That moment when Clark apologies for not saving Lex, and Luthor's genuine reaction because he's so touched by that moment. The last small ounce of a friendship these 2 could have had, and yet it has to be buried under the destiny they both must now embrace. What a great scene.
Michael Rosenbaum's fully mature Lex Luthor, as shown here, would have been perfect in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, much better than Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor.
What the actual fuck. Writers were just scared because of the outcry of the fans if they make that hyperactive little guy with hair main Lex Luthor, but also were too lazy or greedy to cast someone else and do it right. So they smacked a Junior in front of his name hoping nobody would notice.
DarthRushy Yes either him or Michael Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum already Played Lex Luthor, and a very good one at that. Even though i think John Glover would be 100% capable of playing Lex Luthor very good one of the main points against him is his age (71). While Lex Luthor always was older than Superman he was never that old, he always seemed like something from 40-50 years old to me and Michael Rosenbaum is in that perfect age (41). Hes got the looks, hes got the right age, he knows the role and already has fan acceptance so he would be a logical choice. Though i would have taken John Glover too as long as Eisenbeerg stays away from the movie.
Michael Rosenbaum as Lex would already be LEAPS ahead of whatever Eisenberg was supposed to be in BVS, but I'm not sure if even Rosenbaum could've saved that script.
Everyone always says Batman and the Joker the best Hero Villain duo in comics (and some would say beyond) but my favorite has always been Superman and Lex. It is more philosophical, more conniving. When played by people super invested in their roles like Tom and Michael are here, its captivating.
Enemies are just friends in reverse. The enmity between Clark and Lex was never greed for power or question of corruption, but of the envy of power. It’s a question of what such power is used for.
"We have a future Clark and I don't want anything to stand in the way of our friendship" this was the LAST scene between Clark and Lex in the FIRST episode. "We have a destiny Clark, only on different sides" this was in the FIRST scene between Clark and the real Lex in the LAST episode of Smallville, coincidence I think not! well played Smallville.
This is the single best scene between Superman and Luthor, I hope that we someday get a movie that gives us the legendary rivalry this promised, the rivalry every Superman comic gave us

+mr. Wldasoldmysoul4pussyasateen His smile said "Don't be sorry, Clark. I didn't want to be saved.'
Ah but the only way for Superman to save himself is to save LEX, hence the conundrum LOL.
+tenhirankei: He did once. That's the saddest part.
_"There was nothing to save, Clark"_
_"I thought there was.......but that was a lie,...... just like our friendship, wasn't it........"_
Yes. Very "Anakin and Obi Wan."
Shut up Clark
Michael Rosenbaum and the writers behind this Lex UNDERSTOOD Lex Luthor. Sure it started out as hatred and jealousy but then it became not about destroying Superman but improving him so in turn he would challenge Lex and force Lex to improve. Clark so vehemently denied his destiny as Superman and it's Lex who forced him to become the greatest hero, and in turn it forces Lex to try and become more powerful to outdo and then vice versa.
some kind of co-evolution, you mean?

"Lex..."
"You still say it the same way. Astonishment, mixed with a hint of dread, yet, with a hopeful finish."
You smell that, Clark! That’s Lana. She’s mine.
If this isn't the best return quote Michael Rosenbaum could say as Lex Luthor, I don't know what is.

@@tidings1728 nah they wouldn’t... because they would think that people like bill would find a way to make it philosophical
The irony is the privilege that Lex was born into gave him opportunities to be great in ways that Clark never could, to make a difference in more lives than Clark ever could. He COULD have, in his own way, been greater than Superman.
Instead, his fears, his desires, and his envy sent him down another path.
+toddsmitts Because of his father mostly
+NC Quadraxis Yes, partly because of his father, but just like Lionel, Lex's greatest flaw was obsession and greed. That's something he never could overcome and for a time, Lionel overcame it and died for it.
Ronnie Derrell Personally, I still think he would've gone down that path... why? Because it killed him how Clark didn't use his powers the way he though Clark should use them.
Ronnie Derrell I found the scene perfect, to be honest. He's never been jealous of the powers. It's what he does with him or lack of usage, anyway. That's just this interpretation of these two enemies.
He didn't have 100% evidence but he always "knew", from a collection of several moments.
Now, this is terrific writing. It's so compelling that Clark's greatest enemy reassured him at his greatest time of need. However, Lex only did that because he desperately needs Clark to live so that their rivalry can exist.
Classic Lex Luthor move.
All philosophy aside, Clark can, at any time, hold Lex's head in his palms and crush it like a grape.

I think a part of Lex will always consider Clark his brother in his own fucked up way.
Rosenbaum was probably cracking jokes between takes.

So you stole it

Yooo You made this comment 11yrs ago, Prolly dead by now
only Lex tries to kill Superman though
"If it had mattered to you, Luthor, you could have saved the world years ago."
“What killed me is you didn’t even want it. You fought it… you hid from it! I would have taken it and relished it and embraced it!”
The truth is Lex ALWAYS wanted Clark’s powers.
The way Lex’s voice slightly cracked when he said “friends” is just brilliant acting by Michael Rosenbaum

Now THIS is the Lex Luthor we should have gotten in Dawn of Justice!
It wouldn't have made sense for them to be friends in Dawn of Justice...Clark was a farm boy who was lost in his way and didn't have a purpose until he became Superman and the world gave him a purpose
2 years later, an angry and abused Lex Luthor hates the way superman represents God or a godlike figure and wishes to either be above him or do away with him.
I completely agree
Edsel Calleja Lex was too proud. He still recruited or manipulated people to do things for him

SPOILER ALERT
I love Lex's line about Clark having powers and not embracing them.
Great show
+ooshgasm Wow. Amazing analysis of Luthor.
+ooshgasm It's quite ironic. Lex Luthor wants to be a god among men and Clark is already a god among men, but wants nothing more to be considered one of us.

It was their great friendship in the earlier seasons that made their rivalry so good.
for me this problem kinda came out of nowhere.. similar to the relationship of Clark and Lois, which seemed pretty forced to me (at least at the start). It was like from one moment they were good friends and in the next Lex was desperately in love with Lana.. I think the greater problem were really the many lies between Clark and Lex that shook their mutual confidence until each of them just saw bad intentions behind anything the other one did - even if it wasn't meant that way.
Love watching these guys on Talkville!
We won't get a Lex Luthor like this again.
Their friendship was the best thing in Smallville. It's so sad they became enemies and couldn't stop their confrontation.
That’s what made Smallville unique.

This may be true. Perhaps he could have played a serious Lex. Regardless, to me, both actors seem too young for the role of Lex Luthor, though perhaps the Smallville actor may have aged sufficiently to have done justice to the role in BvS.
I've somehow never watched this series. I've got it all on dvd and it's never been opened. Me thinks it's about time.
"I'm sorry I couldn't save you, Lex." PERFECTLY sums up their relationship!

The acting in this scene is phenomenal!
Tom and Michael were absolutely incredible in those roles! Best on screen Clark and Lex ever!
Best Lex Luthor I ever seen; with a complex and profound story, who can judge Lex?
I am Japanese. In Japan, this drama is only known to those in the know, but I am a fan of Lex. If I hadn't discovered smallville, I might not have been interested in the character of Lex Luthor.
In that sense, Michael Rosenbaum is one of my favorite actors.
Smallville the best live action of CLARK KENT AND LEX LUTHOR we could know all about them
The BEST live portrayal of Lex in any movie of film!!
I think Rosenbaum and John Schneider were the best actors of the series, and ofc Lionel's actor as well. Best seasons are the first 5
I say the first 3.
Yeah , agree i think smallville should end in season five
I agree. Smallville got so boring for me when they all died. The earlier seasons were much better.
@@TheLeah2344 if that where true you guys wouldnt be here on this video commenting
@@neilcardenas6476 Nah. Season 6-7 were great too. And season 10 was such a perfect wrap up
If Michael Rosenbalm played in luthor in dawn of justice the movie would have grossed worldwide
I wish, that would have been awesome. I agree, he has been the best live action Luthor.
Dude that would have been awesome I don't understand it he would have made a perfect Lex Luthor for that movie
Sad they started out as such good friends. Lex even called him "The Brother I never had"
now they are enemies :(
When Clark tells Lex he's sorry he couldn't save him, he was also apologizing to Alexander, Lex's conciousness in the form of his childhood self.
Clark lies were part of Lex ruin.
damn i really miss the time when Smallville was like 50% Lex & Lionel 's involvement and 50% Martha & Jonathan 's love and lessons
+R Hickman Remember, Eisenberg was JUNIOR. He was Lex's immature kid.
What the actual fuck. Writers were just scared because of the outcry of the fans if they make that hyperactive little guy with hair main Lex Luthor, but also were too lazy or greedy to cast someone else and do it right. So they smacked a Junior in front of his name hoping nobody would notice.
Max Mustermann They should've just cast John Glover again, this time as Lex himself. He would've worked so brilliantly in the narrative.
This isn't so much the last meeting of Clark and Lex in Smallville, but the first of Superman and Luthor.
Everyone always says Batman and the Joker the best Hero Villain duo in comics (and some would say beyond) but my favorite has always been Superman and Lex. It is more philosophical, more conniving. When played by people super invested in their roles like Tom and Michael are here, its captivating.
"That's the thing about memories Clark you can't forget them"
Immediately forgets everything...
"We have a destiny Clark, only on different sides" this was in the FIRST scene between Clark and the real Lex in the LAST episode of Smallville, coincidence I think not! well played Smallville.
this is a little something called perfection
Their friendship was “Legendary”
This is the single best scene between Superman and Luthor, I hope that we someday get a movie that gives us the legendary rivalry this promised, the rivalry every Superman comic gave us
Here's hoping the 2025 movie will do Lex and Superman justice
@TheTonyEntertainment the fact that James Gunn said Rosenbaum is the best Lex gives me hope
Michael was hands down the best Lex Luthor ever. No other has even come close.
Two powerhouse actors that never got the credit they deserved knocking it out of the park...
Just finished the series, and I gotta say this is the probably greatest interpretation of lex luthor we ever got in live action.
I like the implications that once Lex and Clark become what we know they will, Lex has known Clark is SuperMan all this time. But hasn't said a word.
Interesting to think about. Although if I remember correctly, after this scene, Lex’s sister does something to him that causes him to lose his memory of Clark being Superman.
This was the greatest dialogue between any take on Lex and Kal-El. It encapsulated their whole story!
“That’s the thing about memories. You can’t forget them.” Instantly gets amnesia
Lol
Meet Tom and Michael it was truly an honor. Tom told me has was from a small town and Michael was beyond cool.
I love this lex luthor man i wish he was in batman v supeman
God I loved rosenbaum as lex. So good, acted, written, all of it
