I hope this video gets shared even more now that the new season is currently airing. It's such a shame that a lot of people see the title and immediately think how this anime "sympathizes" with the Axis powers when in reality, this presents both sides of the history albeit in a funny and comedic way.
During it's prime ten years ago was the toxic days were 11-13 year old fans were INDEED were having shipping wars and romanticizing the wars. Hetalia in itself isn't toxic, but rather it's the fans back then who acted like kids that cemented Hetalia to be one. But looking at the fandom now most of them grew up already and are calmer and more mature now.
As a fan for 10 years now, it it makes me happy that Hetalia still exists. It was such a gateway for me to learn, research and love history and geography ). And now with the new season airing, I hope a lot of people will do to.

As a french, I find France very accurate. Like his fights with england are true cause he fought a lot with him. But we aren't that flirty, maybe it's a reference of the language since most people says that France is the language of love. But actually we's sort of rude, we do a lot of stikes, we scream on each other when we do something wrong etc. But i don't really understand why France have a strong relationship with Spain and Prussia... Maybe i should see about that because i dont remember France having any relationship with those two. They had war yes, but no alliances. And yes we're actually good cook, because of gastronomy and all the varieties of food. That's all i have to say but, France, for me, is very accurate

The friendship France has with Prussia and Spain was kind of made canon after it became popular in the fandom. In the beginning, it was mostly just tied to the fact that they were allies during the War of Austrian Succession, but after this trio became so popular among fans, Himaruya kind of 'canonized' it and decided to go along with it. So yeah, we as fans are partially responsible for that, even though Himaruya himself had hinted at them being friends before.

you get conflicts like Switzerland and Austria, where even though grew apart, both of them, as *Basch* and *Roderich,* not as countries, still want to be friends (more on Roderich's side though, Basch is kinda awkward about it) and still cherish the times they had as kids

First off I found this video to be well structured and a good introduction to Hetalia! It can be quite an acquired taste so a video like this is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to research and make it.
Regarding what we thought about the portrayal of our countries, I live on the Swedish-Finnish border and while I greatly enjoyed the appearances Sweden and Finland did get I really can't speak for the accuracy of the stereotypes. Honestly just switching them around would have been better since Sweden's quiet and intimidating "Don't talk much and often just grunt" demeanor would have fit the stereotype of the Finnish old hunter a lot better than the nervous twink we got. I do know Swedish people have a bit of a reputation for being cold and distant due to our different social norms so I suppose that might have contributed to that decision. Either way I find Hetalia to be a very fun and comforting show

About my country (it is Malaysia, one of the ASEANs, I can get a few reference of it).
    1. Country of ‘Budi Bahasa Budaya Kita’ (meaning Courtesy is our culture) - It’s actually the slogan of our courtesy campaign which was launched in 2005
    2. Cares about peace and harmony.
-Umm I’m not sure about this since Malaysians are quite savage when it comes to ranting (yeah with hackers and such) but if it is a historical context, then yes. As our country had been through race riots in the 1960s, racism was something people are often frowned upon. So when there are racist Malaysians in the chat, the netizens will scold them for good.
    3. Collects sea cucumbers.
    - We don’t usually call ‘sea cucumbers’ though in here, but this maybe to get the people from outside Malaysia understand the think that he usually collects. The usual term is called ‘gamat’ and yes, it is the same meaning with sea cucumbers. Gamat literally have health benefits and people usually used it for easing the pain on the body (usually applied to wounds).
    4. Him being late.
-Most Malaysians are on time. Also there are some not on-time. The real thing behind the joke about him being late is what Malaysians said when one’s being late, which is ‘janji Melayu’ or ‘janji British’. Also, people can get annoyed if you try to say otw (on the way) but you are just waking up from your bed XD
    5. Water dispute between Mal and Singapore.
-accurate af👌🏻. Especially for someone who live at the Southern part of Peninsula.
Malaysians have a tend to joke (personally from me who usually takes literally everything seriously), so better be careful to distinguish between a joke and a serious matter.

As an American, the thing that was really spot on (for where I’m from at least) was when America manipulated Japan into paying for his Christmas Party. I’m not saying that all Americans are manipulative, but in my area (South specifically) the people can be rather _persuasive_ when it comes to getting what they want.
Also the food proportions are accurate af. I’ve had to leave a restaurant many times with a to-go box because I still had a lot of food left and couldn’t eat it anymore.

WW2 took place less than 100 years ago meaning there are people with family who personally lived through the horrors of the war. It's easy for young people (me included) to think of it as a historical event far in the past but it's still very fresh to a lot of people.
Hetalia is not exactly the most careful about maintaining historical accuracy. Imagine you suffered the most inhumane treatment and then it was mocked as an oopsie and laughed at by thousands of people. It's not about supporting it or not, approaching the subject matter like this was objectively in poor taste.

    • @ΡΙΖΟΣΚΡΑΒΒΑΡΙΤΗΣ

@@beater393 Yes, there's no denying that. However, "UwU-fication" is simply not the right word, due to it implying it has something to do with youthfulness, kawaii culture, and frankly, lots of other stuff i'd rather not list due to youtube censorship. A better description would simply be "insensitive".
Edit right after writing this : actually, That's not mentioning how japan tried to rebuild it's reputation through cutesy kawaii/anime culture and denial, considering this whole anime does have weird undertones of denial of the crimes against humanity commited by the japanese during ww2, too. And that's a whole other can of worms.. yeah honestly this anime isn't the sharpest tool in the shed at all, I admit that.

Italian here. I started following Hetalia about ten years ago, I was a teenager. I have to admit that at first I was very dissatisfied with the representation of my country. Then I just got used to it. I appreciate Himaruya's work, it's a "big complex" job. But there are things that still do not go down to me: the wrong division between north and south (Rome is not in southern Italy, but in the central part, and he never talk about the islands), the superficiality of many topics (including the unification or the bloody relations between Italy and Germany after 1943), too much generalization, little care (even the stereotype is not very correct).
I know, I know, if Himaruya had done that there would have been no more space for all the other nations. However, I met young people (mainly from the US) who "learned the history" through the Hetalia comic and anime. And my heart bleeds. I hope that the young kids learn the geography and history of my country with school books.

I think that my country in Hetalia is a representation of the modern stereotype of Canadians (almost spot on). There are only two things that I think would have made it more interesting. 1. The inclusion of how Canada is the reason for quite a few rules in the Geneva Convention and 2. That he could have been Metis which would add some historical depth to his character and representation for Metis.

I really enjoyed Hetalia when I was at high school. It was the first anime I watched and I am really grateful that it opened me up to that world of anime and manga. I was always slightly sad though as it focusses a lot on modern history and I absolutely love medieval history. I think it would have been really nice if there was more of it in the anime. It would have also been nice if they had developed the characters more. France is always shown as a pervert and England is meant to be a tsundere. I thought it would have been nice to develop their characters more through a historical context, like actually see what it would be like for them to be living this long life where every human dies around them except the other countries they know.
I know it is meant to be very light-hearted, but I always thought it had the potential to be a lot better. For example, there were very few female countries (none of whom were in the main cast), and it would have been nice to have better representation of LGBTQ+. I liked when they introduced Seborga and Sealand as it was interesting to learn about these places trying to gain independence. I also really enjoyed Romano's and Spain's relationship, but because the episodes were so short it felt like there wasn't enough time for everything. It just all felt crammed in without a moment to think. Yet, when I watched Adventure Time, those episodes were short but could be very meaningful.
    separate
I will add that it has been a long time since I have watched Hetalia. I might feel different if I rewatched it. I remember the later seasons were better at developing characters, but from what I remember even they felt lacking. The potential made me really excited for it, but it never really delivered.

    Greek here! Sup!
I find my country's representation somewhat inaccurate. Truth is,us Greeks are far,far more energetic than quiet boi Heracles and his tendency to fall asleep at random times. Much more open and friendly, too. I love the fact that our "too-many-stray-cats" issue is depicted so cutely in the anime! His love for dance and philosophy is spot on,too! Also his human surname "Karpouzi" translates to "watermelon" in Greek and that annoys me the hell out. Something that pisses me off with the fandom itself is its tendency to ship him and Turkey, which is pretty much an insult by itself, both to the Turks AND the Greeks.
Overall he's an okay character (-and such inaccurate representation is somewhat forgiven due to the fact hes a hunk-)

I love when someone talk about history in Hetalia !
And when someone talking about the history of the characters like historical characters!
People take this show or the manga too seriously… that’s a comedy and satire show ! This anime is a joke itself
Like u shouldn’t use that to learn history ofc , for me that a show to make people laugh when you have the historical references
Or like to take an interest in subjects and do research !
Hetalia itself is not really toxic but the old fandom wronged that… the old fandom was pretty cringe for some reasons and ofc hetalia is not without flaws, with the old cringe strips and webcomics that himaruya did… at the time he didn't really develop his characters well and drew some pretty cringe stuff but that another subject ! … (and the majority of this webcomics and strips has been removed from the canon and the work for obvious reasons lol) but that does not excuse the fact that there are things in the past that Himaruya should never have drawn…
But now Hetalia Is a funny comedy, satire show, with a lot black humor ofc season 7 proved it too, Hetalia is changing and improving himaruya is looking to develop his show in a different way And we have news chapters in the manga too (Hetalia is back hehe)
Of course, the black and special humor of this anime can't please everyone
For me I liked the fact that it was so satire and funny with the historical references

Hard to watch hetalia when you are Russian or somewhere near. Everything is so damn light, so freaking lite, cheerfully and games, it seems like people just have chosen to ignore how really dark most parts of history is, and personally i think the way it shows both of world wars is just plainly unforgivable, seriously, it makes me feel sick.
Still its not worst of "historical" things ive seen so i guess its no use to complain here.

I’m not sure about this. But I’ve been watch a few videos about Putin. To be honest, for me he’s kinda smart and a nice leader. Not to mention most Russians in the video are really kind. Then, there are some people made a joke that US interpreted it in a wrong way, thinking that Russia is like a scary country or something since their past.
Then it reminds myself to Ivan, who I think he’s really kind and have a warm heart, like how I think about Russians. But the way how other Western countries think badly about Russia made me think how even accurate is this show.
Yeah, this is just from me who saw it from an outsider’s perspective. If I said anything wrong in here, I’m really sorry.
If you’re wondering, I love history even before I watch Hetalia. So at least in some episodes, I get the reference for the events.

@@ashmirrahnashihinzahlan8786 i said nothing about characters, i said about how most of historical events were shown in there. I personally think its blasphemously to show events like ww2 or other horrible events by using fluff and humour. Better if they didn't touched historical events at all if they're not really to show all those horrors and simply developing their characters instead.

As Pole, I want to say that I hate how Hetalia portrayed Polish history. At first I didn't like Feliks' character because it doesn't fit literally any stereotypes about Poles (pink, glitter and crossdressing??? really??) but now I'm getting used to it. What really bothers me is how they portrayed Poland's behaviour about German invasion (like in anime it was Poland's fault that the pact with England and France didn't work out while in reality Poles were left alone and betrayed by them). Poland's attitude is completely childish and carefree, which is historically wrong, because no matter how stupid and stubborn we are on daily basis, we always try to unite and work hard under attack. People will probably point out that I take Hetalia too seriously but if they want to base anime and manga on historical stereotypes, then just please make it accurate and don't lie about the most traumatic parts of the country's history.
At least Battle of Grunwald (Battle of Tannenberg) was badass both in anime and in manga.

    • @TheHentaiMan69
      @TheHentaiMan69  2 роки тому +4

Yeah I agree, the way how Poland is depicted makes no sense. I have noticed that a lot of the central/eastern European characters in Hetalia are usually inaccurate and offensive.
