Hetalia Is Weirdly Good

- Hetalia is the best historical parody anime featuring national personifications of countries. In fact, it's the only historical parody anime featuring national personifications of countries. I talk about why it's weirdly good (despite a lot of problems) in this review and reflection on Hetalia. Thanks for watching!

don't you love it when you are depressed about a Hetalia episode, only for your pain to be interrupted by Italy's demonic dance sequence?

Davie?
yes
the ending song actually jump scared me at the end of the episode lol
lol me too. the ending song just made me more sad than I already was
Galaxy Of Destruction nah dude, he's fine. he probably just twisted his spine or something, lol
Hetalia is literally five minutes of complete historical nonsense. I watch it to make me feel better. It works, try whe you're sad.
I agree
Just don't go to the fandom. It is literally the saddest on the face of the planet.
@@annieandelsieofarendelle3294 I can confirm this.
Anyways, i see historical aspect of Hetalia in a "History in a nutshell" sort of way. It's hilarious if you understand the historical context between each funny scene, just like... Well, "in a nutshell"videos
Yeah it's pretty sad. And scary
I feel like it's worth adding that the fandom years ago was cringy and awful, but now is a bit more mature as most old hetalia fans moved on to some.. worse fandoms.
Haha, very true. I would have discussed the fandom more, but honestly... I'd rather not. It is way better now, because people have learned to chill out a little, or yeah, move onto other fandoms where they can be cringy. Thanks for watching!
It’s still pretty cringy. The shippers are still around. Honestly shippers are some of the cringiest parts of fandoms. Every time I see people shipping, I cringe on the inside. And that’s why I watch this show and stay as far from the fandom as possible

Omg ur copying me XD
100% accurate

well this is from Japanese prospective of American stereotypes and beside all American character In anime just like hetalia America
I vibe with America but I also dont
I actually like the whole confusing illogical narrative part. That's what made it so great, and that's how I feel when I study history anyways.
The Davie episode is the best example for the outro *not needing to exist*
True. As the episode finishes, you can't stop sobbing--then the outro plays and you cry harder because Italy's dance is so janky. (Thanks for watching!)
It’s kinda funny that Davie was actually in Florida. *insert lenny face here*
I remember when I first watched that episode, I had sobbed so hard and my heart was hurting so much and suddenly the happy music came on and then came Italy’s demonic dancing and that made me want to kill myself
5IB9 I’ve never related to a comment this much.
I like to think he crossed over to MHA as David Shield. A pipedream but :')
you forgot one historical reference in the first episode after Germany got everyone's attention he explains how they will bring up questions, and says "raise your hand in a fashion that does not offend my country's past" meaning the Nazi salute
Yes, I know! I just cut explaining because the video was pretty long already (lol)! That first episode in particular has a historical reference, like, every other line. Thanks for watching!
That's true--they made very strict rules after the war about everything from that era. I listened to a podcast about a former Nazi female pilot who got in trouble for wearing Nazi medals after the war. Super interesting comment, thanks for that. I want to visit Germany some day.
Fire Creeper I saw that clip today and now I am here, thinking I might start watching the series! For years I never thought I would even think of watching it lol.
@@LadyIneia In Germany, we all inhale sharply whenever someone says something about Hitler. Just hearing his name, basically everyone goes "God damnit why did that ass have to exist" and we react very sensible when some troll on the internet writes "you're all Nazis" to some German. We feel like we have to defend ourselves because it's just NOT that way. Also, I think Hetalia represents Germany perfect in it's stereotype because for example when we work in groups, Germans often get the others to finally work or are easily annoyed when someone is too lazy to do their assigned part... (Talking with personal experience...) Sorry for the rambling btw ^^''

Honestly, Hetalia was better at motivating me to learn world history than school. In school I never felt like I had the time to care what happened and how it mattered to the countries involved, just get the homework over with and memorize enough facts and year numbers for a passing grade. By the time I discovered Hetalia, I had already been an anime watcher for a while, graduated high school and was in college majoring in something unrelated to history. I understood a few jokes, and then actually went out of my way to look up other historical events referenced, which made me realize and get even more of the jokes!
Hetalia is not a directly educational show, but can indirectly educational. It doesn't teach you history, but can make you *want* to learn it.
I complete agree. I think it can encourage you to go learn the history yourself! Thanks for watching and leaving this thoughtful comment!
*P R E A C H*
Kantai Collection (the 4-Koma in particular) did something similar to me, although I had always been interested in naval history
You can tell your parents that anime can be kick ass educational!
i made a poster for wwi using hetalia and my teacher surprisingly really liked it. He never knew they were characters from an anime lol.
The amount of comics in the actual webcomic is impossible to read in one day...

For a second I thought I accidentally clicked a Homestuck video-
Its possible. I didnt sleep.
Where *are* the webcomics? I can't seen to find a substantial amount of them in one place anywhere? Do they have an official site for them or like a Tumblr?
the interesting thing about russia's childlike character is that im reading a book about the cultural history of russia and most of the people mentioned in it had a childish attachment to their youth and it greatly affected their adult life
That sounds super interesting! I didn't know that character trait could be grounded in Russian culture. (Thanks for watching!)
youre welcome, i found your video very entertaining. the book is called natasha's dance: a cultural history of russia. its long but very interesting
May I know the title of the book?
how can you have a childlike attachment to your youth....everyone has that feeling. like ? literally everyone's childhood greatly affected their adult life.
@@samaraisnt I believe it just means compared to other countries at the time they were more childlike. Not acting in an adult manner and finding a hard transition into an adult life and not letting go or moving on. I think I'm going to look up a bit of this for a while to see if it was a normal social thing or not.
I'm crying this is my favorite show ever this actually cured my depression I remember not wanting to get up then hearing their voices in my head to urge me forward to continue with life

So 2 years ago I read a doujinshi on youtube. I was like "I refuse to believe that one has a name of a country.". The first time I watched Hetalia I felt confused. Hetalia repeat scenes so many times and 5 minutes long episode??? Really??? And the plot is....really random that the last episode of a season gives no touching thing. I planned to stop watching but the problem is ... I couldn't. And then I noticed myself already finished 4 seasons. And a movie.... (Not really a movie.)
Then I watched the 5th one. Wow,artstyle revolution. I cried on Davie. Then finished all six,get to the fandom (lol) and here I am.
*Summary* : Hetalia isn't anime or cartoon. Hetalia is Hetalia. Category : Hetalia. Which consume life and soul. All praised Hima papa. The end.
Edit : By the way,how could I forget to mention that Hetalia is actually about 3 anti-democratic villians trying to conquer the world by attacking their neighbours?

Julcool 43110 WHAT ARE YOU
Julcool 43110 it's kind of an achievement that you managed to move on instead of being stuck in this fandom forever ~
Honestly, all of these points are valid. I have been in this dumpster fire of a fandom for a total of... it'll be 7 years this year and I go back and watch the show every now and again just for how ridiculous it can get. My favorite line has to be in season 5 when Switzerland and Austria have an exchange and Austria is like "So is it cozy being up Germany's asshole?" in reference to the Swiss, while being neutral the entire time during WWII, were selling supplies to whoever paid the most, Germany being the most frequent customer. When I first watched it I about died because a) that was an abrupt line, even for this kind of show, and b) it's funny because it's true.
In the end, it's all about stereotypes and pretty boys (and girls. Hungary bby ilu). It's dumb humor about history that I can get into. While the personifications being pretty anime boys and girls is an odd choice and leads to some interesting conversations when asked "oh that's an interesting fact, where'd you learn that??", it's definitely something that history nerds can get behind. If it weren't for this dumb show, I probably wouldn't be into history and learning about cultures as much as I am, so I have to give it credit.
Yeah! Hetalia as an avenue for encouraging people to explore the history more on their own is super important, I think. It's a silly concept, but it works so well that I'd celebrate Himaruya for it! Thanks for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment!

I try not to be like this but it isn’t working
Girl, this diserves at least 100,000 views. What really makes Hetalia special is the characters. Every character has been through some serious hardships and they've still gotten through it all.
Thank you so much!! I definitely agree--Hetalia's characters are incredibly unique and memorable, and many of them of great arcs.
Yep. What's great is that they also exist beyond their stereotypes. It's a shame whenever I read a danfic where America's characterization can be described as "hamburger hamburger hamburger" and France's can be described as "rape jokes and excessive flirting."
I do love the characters, but I do find them slightly problematic. There aren't enough girl characters, their stereotypes are kinda annoying, their accents aren't even accurate, and the don't have much depth other than "following their country's stereotypes". It's kinda....repetitive to watch these "static" characters not really....develop as people, but the characters do make me laugh, have sweet moments, and, well...are hot XD. This is why Spain is my favorite, cause I felt he had the most development as a character, especially with Romano. It was from a boss/servant relationship to him actually getting to know him and care about him. That can also go for England, since he also had development with America when he was a chibi
That's the main reason I stayed in the fandom so long. They're awesome characters really (and it's also so much fun to see people put them in different AUs and situations besides canon)
I’m not sure how or when you came across this, as this show is years old now. I was watching this when I was much younger. The fandom isn’t dead, but very quiet with a multilingual video here or there. The show is good though, to me. In later seasons, it’s allowed to expand and have more jokes. It’s supposed to be silly and offensive. The creator has gotten many death threats. But the countries themselves are hilarious. I’ll admit that the rescued footage in the first season is soooo annoying. Later season don’t do it. I just love how flashy and silly it can be. I found this as a young teen, so I loved it. It’s nostalgic for me now.
Oh, I came across the show years ago now. I think Hetalia: The Beautiful World, the fifth season, was just coming out so in 2013 or so. I think the fandom is quieter now, but the popularity of this video has proved to me that it's certainly not dead! I think it does get better as it goes along too. You're right that it does has a certain nostalgia. Even though I only discovered it five or so years ago, I still feel that. Thanks for watching!
LadyIneia Yeah i see a couple cosplays here and there, especially because some of the costumes are quite simple. I still like it once and a blue moon, but I do agree with you that the story isn’t it’s strongest feature
Happy Anniversary, Hetalia.
Hetalia is what had gotten me into history in the 6th grade and I was that screaming 13 year old for a while but I am honestly grateful I was exposed to it because it made my most hated class my favorite and best subject. Hetalia is bad, yes, but it's premise alone is perfect for the tired history student who needs an easy way to remember countries and their history, and I owe a lot to it.
I think most of us were screaming 13 year olds (I was briefly too). I'm glad to hear that it made history fun for you. I do think Hetalia can really inspire people to get into history, which is just incredible to me! It has its flaws but its a fun take on world events. Thanks for watching!

Yeet Yeet Jones Every single member of the Fandom knows Hetalia is an inescapable hell 😂😂😂
Wow! I was honestly blown away by the quality of this freaking video- you got me good at some points, especially at the beginning with the "hot anime boys" (couldn't be more accurate). You made clear, strong statements and I was nodding my head at every turn, and I was intrigued and you kept the video moving and interesting.
As a fellow Hetalian, I really, really have to agree that the countries themselves is what makes this anime so lovable, rather than the animation or the 'plot.'
Anyways, amazing. I loved this! Keep up the awesome work, and keep being yourself- it was stunning!
Ahhh thank you so much! This is just the sweetest comment! I can't stop grinning! I'm so glad you enjoyed it; I worked really hard on it. Hetalia is a show I've liked for a long time now, but I hadn't seen much analysis on it, so I had to get my voice out there. Thank you again for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment!

Thank you so much! Yeah, it got taken down for copyright the day after it came out, so I think a lot of people missed it... Still! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Gosh, this brought back a lot of memories for me. I first got into Hetalia in 2010, and it quickly became my main fandom for a good number of years before I finally moved on to other things. I still have an incredible fondness for the series, though. Even though it is an incredibly flawed series, as you mentioned, what I think saves it and makes it something truly worthwhile is the characters and the sheer amount of potential in the series' core concept. Heck, if you look back at the first early strips (and even some of the earlier episodes of the anime, to an extent), to the ones published in last few years, some of the characters are almost completely unrecognizable from who they used to be, since Himaruya has changed and developed them so much. I completely understand why Himaruya keeps the series predominantly comedic, but honestly, I *live* for the more serious strips and episodes the series has done. Those brief, tiny moments where the curtain is pulled back a little and we see that these characters aren't just one-dimensional cardboard cutouts that act out historical events in a vacuum; they're people, too, with their own thoughts, feelings, and opinions, separate from their citizens and their bosses, and the life of a personified nation is honestly a lonely, bittersweet, and hard one. That realization lends the characters a sense of depth and reliability that helps you really connect and sympathize with them. And all the characters are sympathetic in some way; no one is "the designated bad guy," everyone has their strengths and their weaknesses and their silly moments, and it really helps drive home the point that at the end of the day, everyone is just as human as everyone else. And I like that. For a series that is so ostensibly focused on comedy and national stereotypes, it shows a surprising amount of nuance.
Plus, that muted tone of bittersweetness underlying everything in the series is a perfect jumping off point for the fans to explore more serious topics and historical events in their fanworks that the series itself wouldn't dare touch. Sure, some people can take it way too far in the other direction, but in the right hands, it can be an incredibly effective way to explore history and really bring it to life in a way that few other concepts have managed. As the old saying goes "One death is a tragedy, a million is just a statistic." What better way to show that then by showing how historical events affect a character you already love that also happens to represent an entire country?
So yeah, all that to say, I really do love how funny and tongue-in-cheek the series is, but I also love how versatile the concept can be, how much room there is to expand upon it and the characters themselves, and how effective it is in making people curious about history and other cultures than perhaps they wouldn't be otherwise. I already loved history before discovering Hetalia, but I love it far, far more now and learned so much more than I probably would have had I not stumbled across it back in the day. :) Thanks for the analysis and for the video. Have a good one!
What a long and thoughtful comment! The concept is probably the greatest part of Hetalia, quite honestly. A lot of my favorite Hetalia fan things are where people run wild with the concept, staying true to the characters while looking farther "behind the curtain" that isn't seen in the manga/anime at times. I also totally agree that I'm glad there's not one "bad guy," which can sometimes be the easy way out when looking at history instead of exploring the depth and layers present in most conflicts. Especially since the show looks at a bunch of eras, it has the opportunity to show the evolution of the countries and their personalities. Thank you for watching and leaving this great comment! I really enjoyed reading it! c:

I love hetalia and this helps me of geography
You're right, Hetalia is honestly quite helpful--I only remembered that Austria and Prussia switched sides supporting England and France from the War of the Austrian Succession to the Seven Years' War because of Hetalia!
It clearly doesn't help you with English.
Hey, is there an anime that helps improve a persons English?
"This helps me of geography"
First of all, the correct way to say this is, "This helps me with geography."
Secondly, replace "this," with "it."
Thirdly, after "I love hetalia" you should put a comma.
Lastly, "hetalia" is capitalized.
This is how your comment should look:
"I love Hetalia, and it helps me with geography."
How your comment looks:
I love hetalia and this helps me of geography
Also, the correct way to say your second comment would be, "Yo, Spitfyre, I know English. What the f*** are you talking about?"
In fact, a more polite way to say this would be, "Hello, Spitfyre. I believe I know English. Please explain your reasoning."
Spitfyre too much responsibility ugh i hate responsibility and btw stop correcting me at least they understand and 2nd of all i'm not even in class and who's the fucking teacher btw?

Another downside to Hetalia is the toxic fandom (which has calmed down) but the shipping wars were hell.

@@lampsandclovers fruk......jk I wasn't even in the fandom when this was going down. I didn't find Hetalia until 2016. When it was calm so it was a surprise to me. When I heard that the fandom was brutal I was surprised because I came during the aftermath so not many shipping wars and I at the time found it a bit weird to ship nations but I've gotten use to it and didn't really get into shipping until a year later...And in this fandom I learn that I can actually ship any ship. USUK, Fruk, Gerita, Romerica, Gerame, PruAus, AusSwiss so on and so forth. With America being the most shippable. Probably has to do with the fact that in real life the US gets in everyones business.
Oh god the tumblr wars where hell. Especially once you added in the fanmade characters (2p! versions, gender swap ect)
@@sweetgirlandhercats I'm gerita and fruk
@@marieeden8009 i hate fanmade characters tbh. It's kinda offensive, like telling the creators the characters weren't good enough for their tastes.
Very true-to-the-point analysis. It definitely has its flaws (my god, Italy, that dance is so bad) but the playing with history and overall comedic theme makes it enjoyable.
The dramatic moments are, granted, very out of the ordinary, but I honestly wish there were more of them... and from I've read from the actual webcomic, the number of those moments is starting to really grow... not a ton, but a little bit.
I await the day the anime focuses on the War of 1812 skits because those are some of my recent favorites and the tension, albeit being silly, is clearly there. This series thrives best in those set-ups, probably because everyone can understand war because it happened/happens everywhere.
Thank you so much! I am very glad you enjoyed it. I wish there were more dramatics too--and I think there are more in the webcomic, mostly because there's just so many more strips in the comic they haven't gotten adapted! Thanks again for such a thoughtful comment!
Of course. ^v^
I actually thought the sibling relationships made a lot of sense. England is America's older brother and surragate dad because the USA was started by British immigrants and America fought against England for its independence. England has a similar influence over Canada, with the exception that Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth. France is also an older brother surragate dad for Canada, and America but to a lesser extend, because French settlers partially created Canada, Canada has a French province, and France helped America fight for its independence. As Canada and America were created around the same time as each other, and founded/heavily influenced by the same countries, it makes sense that they're depicted as brothers.
Ukraine and Belarus are Russia's younger sisters because both of those countries used to be part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Culturally, there are still a lot of similarities between all three of these countries.
Prussia is Germany's free-loading brother because Prussia was a German state that was part of the Holy Roman Empire. And doesn't exist anymore, hence the free-loading.
England, Scotland, and Wales are all brothers because they're all part of the United Kingdom. And gotta say, I love that Hetalia makes sure to emphasize the differenee between England and the other parts of the the UK.
A lot of the older and younger sibling dynamics depict the history of colonized countries or newer countries that split off from older countries. And shows the influence the colonizing countries still have over their former colonies. And/or the sibling relationships show countries that are fairly similar culturally and border each other. It's a fun way to learn history and geography.
Historically, it would more sense for Denmark to be depicted as Iceland's older brother instead of Norway, but I'm pretty sure they're all considered family in Hetalia.
Personally, I love that Austria-Hungary was depicted as a marriage between Austria and Hungary, and presumably a divorce when the country split up. And that the Soviet Union was depicted as Russia forcing a bunch of countries to live in his house, because honestly that's a pretty good metaphor for it.
I have been trying to convince my bestie to watch this show for months. I think this video will work!
Awesome! I hope it works!
Rip he did but he found it weird so he stopped after like episode 2, although I'm not upset, he was spared from an inescapable fandom

The humor and craziness is what won me over.
The show got me interested in world history and it made me want to learn more. I remember I took this American History class in high school and being a fan of the series made it way more enjoyable than it would have been if I wasn’t.
I don’t think it’s supposed to be taken too seriously, hence the comedy. It’s strange to hear it described in complete detail when in summary it’s just someone who was just like “hey, what if countries were human stereotypes?” So he wrote several comic strips about it and then it became super popular, then resulted in an anime.
It nice to see someone critic it because yeah it’s not perfect, but overall I think I think it does a good job at catching your attention, the animation is good, and THE DUB. OH GOSH THE DUB IS HILARIOUS. And I think the show runners are good at balancing character storylines but it’s hard when the comics do the same bits over and over in the same location sometimes.
I remember watching the first skit and needing like five minutes to process the "PASTAAA~" thing

LadyIneia no problem X3
@puffcorn As Anime America would put it, No one notices Canada.
I thought is was absolute trash when I first found out about it. For years, I avoided it and scoffed at Hetalia fans but I eventually decided to check it out for myself. I ended up genuinely enjoying the show. It wasn’t nearly as horrible as I once thought. It was the first time that had happened to me-Enjoying an anime I originally disliked before even watching it. It lead to me trying out anime I didn’t like which was actually a really good thing. An example of another anime I used to dislike was Haikyuu.
Applepieisbae Oh same. Though before I know about Hetalia, I didn't really know anything about anime in general. Only after I watch it I know about anime. The first time I watch it I didn't really like it and I thoughts it was stupid. But then I continue to watch it and found out that I love it. After some times I found out about Haikyuu, but I didn't have any interest in it because I hate sports. Only last year I tried to watch it. And I loves it. Really loves it. Though Hetalia still have a special place in my heart
I do think a lot people feel the way you used to feel, but it's surprising how many people can come around on the show! I certainly came around to it after a lot of mixed feelings. Haikyuu I always liked though! Thanks for watching!
That happened to me but with My Little Pony
I agree, the dub is amazing. But in regards to emotional moments, the sub is the way to go. Best example is, again, the Davie episode. While there is barely any dialogue, the voice for chibi-America sounds too old when he says Davie's name, so it kind of breaks the illusion a bit.
Other than that, though, dub all the way!
Yes, I definitely agree. Subs with Davie are the way to go. I generally prefer it for Chibitalia too, but the dub's not too bad there either. I do think some more emotional episodes, like my personal favorite A bientôt! Until We Meet Again with France and Lisa the reincarnated Joan of Arc, can be improved by the dub. Lisa is supposed to be an American tourist, but in the original Japanese she speaks like a shy, polite Japanese girl rather than a more straight forward American; in the dub, she's way more spunky and loud that feels much more natural for an American tourist. Anyways, I got I little off topic! I just like discussing the dub, and it's good to find a dub fan! Not many of us out there!

Sorry, it's not. I didn't mean to give the impression it is! It just was on there years ago, when I first watched it. Thanks for watching!
The Hetalia anime is the only anime that is the exact same as the "manga". The manga is basically a first draft, the anime is the cleanup version lol
Some of the countries being siblings, or just family in general, does actually make sense in a way. There are enough cultural and historical relations between countries that are related in Hetalia that it doesn't even register as weird to me. If they can consider some countries enemies, why can't they consider other countries family?
*When germany was basically your 3rd and 7th grade teacher in a nutshell except much meaner*
She was also German herself but we're gonna ignore that part-
i watched the show when i was younger so the flaws kind of just flew over my show and i enjoyed the show for what it was, a comedy anime. i imagine watching it now i would find the flaws annoying. damn i kinda miss my old mindset lol
Yeah. It does suck to almost outgrow a show, where you come back much more genre savvy and stuff and can't take it. It's a shame. Thanks for watching, though!
LadyIneia its nothing, great video!
Tbh I wish Mexico was there, although it would most likely be like Italy and his brother due to how the north and south being different. Hetalia is one of my favorite anime although my mom isn't fond of Germany due to its history. It's interesting to see its flaws since I've never really noticed them (how? I don't know myself 😅). I'm so glad I found this in my recommended great video 😊.
Yeah, I wish they had Mexico, and a lot of other countries, too. There's no countries from South America, and almost none from Africa. I'm quite glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching! c:
Mexico was mentioned in World Twinkle, so there's hope for South and Central America.
i started dying when the Italy dancing part came on
Who didn't honestly... (Thanks for watching!)
After watching Hetalia, I got weirdly good at remembering the flags for most of the countries...
Same 😭
This is exactly how I feel about this show!. Also will ever review on the hetalia move?
I might talk about the Hetalia movie! I actually think it's one of the best things in the series because it actually has a continuous (if silly) plot. First though, I was thinking about a video on my favorite, and what I think is the best, Hetalia episode.
+LadyIneia thank you for answering . And I'll be look forward to both of those videos. I really enjoyed your style, keep it up the great work 👍!
i think one person reviewed it, personally it's funny, and weird it's pretty short an hour or less total i think, it's one of the most chronological pieces early hetalia ever did where a lot of the bits are completed in a somewhat chronological order breaking up the movie's main storyline a bit. I would rate the bloopers on it an 8.5\10 though XD i bought it partly to see the rest of what wasn't online and partly because i had found several of hetalia's infamous bloopers, a lot of it is just Germany's voice actor making confusing noises and threatening to eat Italy's cat when they get stranded on the desert island (but with all of them) but XD overall it was your average hetalia brand humor
It's crazy to think I was in middle school when I started watching Hetalia. I'm a freshman in college now, and these characters still come to mind sometimes when I see something as simple as their names. As cringeworthy as the show has been sometimes, it probably influenced me more than I realize and I still keep coming back. Haven't watched the show itself for a while, but I've gotten back into the fandom stuff, ironically enough. Perhaps I'll have to find time to watch it all again haha.
Either way, this was a great video. I know I'm a couple years late, but seriously, good stuff. It's refreshing/interesting to see someone outline the flaws with this show because it can be hard to decipher what's good or bad in a show that gets as nonsensical as this one does. I've learned to just accept that it's not great, but I still enjoy it :).
The Hungary reaction pics were hilarious as well!
Hetalia is in my top 20 favorite anime if not top ten. It's SOOOOO hilarious for a history and geopolitics nerd like me XD
Nice. Hetalia is one of my favorites too because I adore history!
Hetalia is... when you can make someone cry like the Niagara Falls with saying just a name.
i dont think the four almost exactly the same episodes of hetalia bothered me all that much, mainly bc each episode is only 5 minutes long. but when a show, whos episodes are 30 minutes each, repeats the same 8 episodes, word for word, scene by scene, i quit. (im looking at you haruhi suzumiya)
btw this is a really good video!!
Oh my god, Haruhi Suzumiya was wayyyyy worse. The Hetalia thing is annoying, but Endless Eight was insanity-inducing! Thank you for watching!
Ah, this brings back memories of being obsessed with Hetalia back in high school along with my friend. I view this as good memory due to not interacting with the fandom much aside from artists focusing on historical scenes.
Also let me tell you. This series is such a joy for someone attenting advanced history class in Poland. Which, if you've ever heard about education system there, you know they like to teach us everything for whatever reason. So we'd just learn about history of so many countries that it wasn't hard to remember the context to many events portrayed in Hetalia. Heck, the series made some fact easier to remember (Example. The Teutonic Order was known for having built many mills during its early years of existence. Quite helpful to remember by adding the headcanon that Prussia's hair is so white because he was born in a pile of flour. Also explains the red eyes.)
One thing that always bothered me though was lack of Poland and Hungary content. Like, we've literally been best friends forever.
I haven’t seen much of Hetalia, but it always amused me how dark and gritty and achingly realistic the fan content was compared to the actually show.
This part got me too, the hook was the comedy but the sinker is the historical context!
The fan works are very insightful and inspired
Worth the wait! Awesome job!
Hetalia is the only fandom we can't escape from no matter what we do......
Believe me i tried leaving
Hetalia is basically drunk history class.
Now im 22 and i realised that not everyone had a hetalia phase and not everyone loves history as much as i do after that phase
*What happened to the smol bean*
*Y'know*
*Canada*
I think i know the reason cause Canada is a very peaceful country and wasn't really in any BIG wars so it's understandable that it wouldn't be in Hetalia much, bUT C'MON EVERYBODY LOVES CANADA-
My heart! It's been so long!:'))
I feel like most of my enjoyment came from the fandom funnily enough. (Guess i'm just a natural at avoiding discourse). I liked the show but i honestly liked the comics more since there was just... more of it. Also it made the show make a bit more sense. I think in the end i liked the concept more than the actual show but I'm glad i saw it. This is a really nice review!:D
Well, as much cringy stuff as there was in the fandom, there was gold too. I do like that there's more to the comics--and I also find the concept more interesting than the follow through. One of my favorite Hetalia artists just ignores canon and runs with the concept and basic characters, which I find quite appealing. Thanks for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment!
This was one of the first animes I watched when I started REALLY getting into anime, right as i was 12/13 years old.
It made me bcome interested in world history. I spent so many hours browsing wikipedia pages of several countries both to understand the jokes and to also WRITE FANFICTION because I would be that type of person to research "what X and Y countries ever interacted in history??" instead of assuming.
Yeah, fanbases suck in general. I don't blame people for being put off because that reason. But no matter where I go, fanbases just suck everywhere no matter which media they are supporting. Man, I haven't seen Hetalia in years so I was happy to see they got better animation while I took a break. The ONE joke that I've seen from Hetalia that I still remember TO THIS DAY was when America was trying to demoralize Japan by painting Mt. Fuji
America: Yeah! I liked using the crayons.
Christ, my sides are splitting
Hetalia actually made me understand geography more. I found out that there's actually A LOT of countries I don't know about after watching the show
I recently started rewatching hetalia (which is why this is in my recommendations). It took me back to when times were genuinely simple. Small things like the beautiful world ending song and Germany yelling makes me somehow feel better. It’s just a great show that can make you stop thinking about the bad times.
As an Australian I laughed way too hard when I met Australia I kept thinking how great it was to see my countries stereotype and how I had the same hair and eye colour as him
That's awesome! I think it's great when people really can see how their personifications fit their countries.
The way you explained everything was perfect. I was trying to explain Hetalia to my friends but could only describe it as confusing but sometimes funny. This is so accurate to how I feel about the show!
Thanks for nice video!
And I love eng dubbed hetalia too!
Glad you enjoyed it! (It's always nice to meet people who love the English dub as much as I do!)
Being a fan of Hetalia when I was younger, and now as a fan of streamers, hetalia got the America/England interactions spot on. Whenever American & British streamers are in a voice chat together it rlly devolves to that exact level of passive-aggression (with sometimes more genuine aggression from British people) or straight up love-hate lmao
hetalia walked so hamilton could run
And country humans
I discovered hetalia when I was a 17-year-old guy, never stopped watching it
when I heard of hetalia, all I ever heard was just it’s cancerous fanbase, which is pretty much why I never really touched the anime. then, one day I got curious and watched a ‘hetalia funny moments’ video that got in my recommended and I was hooked instantly. I watched all the episode dubbed (in my opinion, the accents in the dub make it even more enjoyable) and now I’m obsessed. I feel like I could’ve enjoyed this even more if I were younger because I always wondered how countries would act if they were people. when I learned that this anime was based around that, that’s why I was intrigue. tbh, I like animes that have a dark tone and deal with irl problems or go deep into certain topics, but what I really liked how the anime took a controversial topic and made light out of it in a good way. another reason why I liked it, as you said in the vid, is because the stereotypes are perfect and written well so it wasn’t offensive. yes, the anime has its flaws with strange storyline and progression and lazy animation, and of course some of the older fandom (hopefully most of it calmed down), but I just really love this anime for its humor and how enjoyable it really is.
Honestly the sporadic storytelling and jumping around so much does absolute *wonders* for my adhd and attention span. I know that’s not most people, but for some reason it just works really well for me~
When you, when you're Canadian and you're constantly forgotten by other people 😰
i've never had anyone to talk to ab this anime and you put all of my thoughts and feelings ab this show into words. in 2024 this video is so amazing
Lithuania os my favourite charater cause.. He is so cute and carring for others.
Royal Lollipop YES
Yaasss
Yes! He is very sweet. I wish I had more time to talk about more minor characters in this video, like Lithuania or (my fave) Prussia. Thanks for watching!
funimation is banned in my country T_T
Ah, that sucks! Other companies have licensed it elsewhere, so hopefully you could find it from a different source. Thanks for watching!
A way to watch anime for free is to use the site gogoanime.io it’s pretty good.
Killer Kate I know
Charo PL what is your country I need to go tell trump to wage war on them
Charo PL Oh......well now I just sound like an idiot. 😅
I’m very late to this vid, but it was very well put together!
My good friend used to watch Hetalia as a kid and I wanted to understand more about it. There are some things I still don’t understand, and it primarily centers around the idea of this personification.
Having the plot center around the WWII era seems like a story backdrop that was set up to fail. The plot simultaneously acknowledges the war, but won’t explicitly mention any negative aspects from it, inadvertently giving the show a slight tone deaf feeling. The fandom has had issues in the past with young people cosplaying as Nazi characters, a consequence of media with no explicit anti-hate themes. Since comedy is primary and education is secondary (even tertiary) the darker parts of history seem to become inconvenient plot points rather than the intertwined complex issues they were. Which begs the question, why set the plot here?
The stereotypes of the countries also aren’t entirely equal. The show has had many criticisms lobbed towards it, another being the theme of nationalism some viewers tend to pick up on. The authors portrayal of South Korea in his works is a striking misunderstanding of history. With respect to the show alone, Japan in the archived material I found is described as a “quiet, serious, warrior nation” - Japan’s stereotyped flaws acknowledge a few historical defeats, but overall frame the character more ideally relative to the others.
As an adult, I don’t think I’d be able to separate my discomfort with what the show is trying to portray, but your essay very clearly laid out some reasons why others could enjoy it. A part of me worries the plot trivializes history and the tragedies that occur, while another part of me is relieved it wasn’t touched.
All this to say, I really loved listening to your thoughts and thinking through my own feelings on the series!
I feel like my feelings are very similar! They’ve certainly evolved a bit since I made this video years ago-learning more about the portrayal of South Korea in the comics and Japan’s idealized portrayal certainly are huge issues-plus reckoning with the fandom’s behavior and the responsibilities of the work because of the subject matter. But watching it as a teen, I enjoyed a lot of it and still have nostalgia for it all. A very unique show and situation for sure.
Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment! I’m glad it helped you think through some of your feelings on it.
@@LadyIneia It’s always a fun time looking back through the things we loved as teens! Thanks for reading this super long comment lol!
I though it was kinda funny that the voice actor for Greece couldn’t do a proper Greek accent, so he just whispered.
If you're insterested in seeing more comedies with personified countries, I highly recommend the webcomic Scandinavia and the World. Bonus points for it mostly avoiding WWII expect for the rare comic strip (and even then, none of the main characters were part of the Axis Powers, so it still manages to avoid the pitfalls that Hetalia fell into).
While I am 5 years late to this video, I really appreciate how fair you are in your analysis of the anime. I've always kinda liked Hetalia, and here are some things I've noticed over the last decade (god I am old..):
1) Part of why Hetalia (the anime) is incomprehensible is due to the nature of the manga and animation itself. The manga isn't a typical story, it's more like.. a comic strip found at the back of a newspaper. The randomness is inherent to the series. The anime is split into *five minute episodes* with an intro and outro each, so naturally it'll be a bit crazy.
2) The people who simply like or enjoy Hetalia are decent people. The ones who are OBSESSED with loving or hating it are awful. I once got called a n*zi because I said "Hetalia was kinda funny" in passing conversation. That person was, ironically, a huge racist (towards Asians, if anyone was curious lol), and they supported religious discrimination. As for the obsessive Hetalia lovers... I don't need to say anything, y'all already know. Point is, people who just LIKE Hetalia are often pretty chill. We know the series has its issues, but we're also smart enough to know that it's satire.
3) The comedy never really gets old. This is partially due to the weirdly accurate stereotypes, but it's also partially due to the fact that it is a historical comedy. It's not really stuck in pop culture or current events; it discusses things we already know. The original plot lines are also funny because by then, we understand how the characters behave, so we get to enjoy them being themselves in scenarios that don't relate to a historical event. And as you said in the video, the weirdness is just ridiculously funny. Something about the quickness and quirkiness of the humor keeps me coming back for a binge once in a while.
4) The newer seasons DO really fix a lot of Hetalia's older problems. The addition of thoughtful episodes really makes you feel for the characters, but it also makes you feel for history itself. Idk about everyone, but the deeper episodes really had me reflecting on all of the sacrifices that led all of us to where we are now. People died for our countries to advance to the way they are, and sometimes that reminder can be really motivating. Whenever I do a quick Hetalia binge, I find myself wanting to be more active. I want to be a part of history too. Which leads me to my final point....
5) History itself. One of the constants in history is humor. It's so human to mock ourselves and others, to laugh and to share joy, to make others laugh for the sake of laughter itself... It was only a matter of time before something like Hetalia came along. To mock our own history and to laugh at the absurdity of the stupid things history has done is only natural. Hetalia has also done a great job of getting younger people into history. By literally humanizing history in the form of countries, it got younger people interested in the humanity-aspects of history. When you're young and new to anime, you hear a lot about history from your teachers... but how much of that matters, anyway? It's all old news. Now you're watching Hetalia, and it's like, "Wait a minute--these historical events actually had *people* in them." (shocker!). Even I was into history when I was younger, but Hetalia got me thinking about other countries and their local history, not just the war-related stuff. It's surprisingly educational and it makes history fun.
I know this comment is 5 years overdue, but if anyone is reading this, thanks for taking your time to read what I had to say about this goofy show lol. Thanks for this video, it made me feel a little less alone in just liking Hetalia.
As far as I know, Hetalia is a 4-koma (comedy manga with four- panel chapters) that started as a sort of twitter comic, so that is probably why it doesn't make much sense as anime and especially to people new to anime/manga. 4-komas and 4-koma like mangas tend to pick up storylines, drop them and then pick them up again when you have already forgotten about them, not everyone likes them (my bf likes them, but I find most of them kinda boring), but you get used after reading enough of them
Just discovered this old video lol. I’m a long time hetalia fan. I’ve been a fan of it for 14 years now… I have always been interested in history from a young age. Always had an obsession with countries and geography as well… of course I was bound to become obsessed with it. I had a very diverse childhood growing up which I think partially influences my hobbies. I’m Bulgarian, was adopted by a Mexican American couple and raised in the U.S. I grew up having friends from all over the world. I was bound to come across hetalia sooner or later but this series changed my life. It sounds dramatic but I’m dead serious. It really lit a fire in me to want to pursue my dreams. Despite growing up in what seems like a fun and diverse family, it was nothing like that. My mother is a horrible person to say the least. I have my own traumas prior to being adopted also and I never really did fully integrate or fit in with American society on top of that. I was really distraught growing up. Of course, life is always a battle but I think hetalia helped grasp some kind of foundation and understanding of what I wanted out of life. I want to go back to my home country but I also want to travel the world, become a history professor or a museum curator. Actually do the things I love. At the age of 13, I discovered that my real passion is in history, art and culture and that’s what has kept me going through even now at the age of 27 lol. I hate the fandom though. It’s utter trash. A lot of really dumb culturally unaware people. And for the life of all things living, stop with the ships. I understand shipping France and England or Sweden and Finland… some others here and there, but most of these are just bad and straight up offensive. It’s funny but also annoying when I see Romania/bulgaria being shipped. Romania is a much younger nation than Bulgaria and by hetalia’s logic, they’d be brothers. Also, Romania isn’t the most loyal friend to Bulgaria lmao (no offense to any Romanian that reads this). This is just one example. Shipping Russia with Poland or any of the baltics is pretty tone deaf. Shipping England with America is like shipping a parent with a child or older sibling with a younger sibling… also, people who ship America with any Eastern European country are jusy silly and kinda dumb. Also people who ship countries who have nothing to do with one another… and honestly, if you’re not from that country maybe you shouldn’t use hetalia as a reference for your opinions on said country. Fetishizing other countries and culture is also a no go and is just creepy and gross. There’s a lot of issues within the fandom. A lot of lack of awareness within the community. People forget that these characters represent national entities. They represent groups of people. For the most part, Himaruya keeps it respectful when writing the characters. Silly little stereotypes (x country is lazy, x country is alcoholic,
X country is arrogant, etc) are harmless and sort of based on truth. Otherwise they wouldn’t be stereotypes. The problem is when people invent headcanons about a country they know nothing about, or they make some kind of claim about country X’s history because they” learned” it from hetalia… a great example was when I saw someone make a post of hetalia headcanon ages… they wrote that America would be 23 years old while Bulgaria is supposedly only 18 or something… because according to Himaruya, Bulgaria’s birthday is March 3rd… March third is our liberation from the Ottoman Empire, which happened in 1878… truth is, Bulgaria has existed since 681 ad. It’s kinda ridiculous to make historical claims that are far from accurate and unintentionally offensive. To completely disregard a country’s history and go off of an anime to claim this or that “historical fact” is pretty crazy. I use Bulgaria as an example because I’m Bulgarian and it’s the easiest comparison for me to make, but they made this same crazy assumption about other countries. Just totally disregarding their history. Some people don’t really understand that cultural and historical context is really important to most groups. I think the main issue is with American fans in general. America doesn’t really take its own or anyone else’s history nor culture that seriously. Many Americans don’t feel the same connection that other people feel towards their own countries… the issue with this is that many Americans assume that the rest of us think like them. And then they go off making really offensive culturally insensitive posts. That’s the issue. I know this comment is ridiculously long, but that’s my biggest issue with this series. Idk how many times I have to deal with someone who isn’t Bulgarian or of any Eastern European descent yet because they watch hetalia, they suddenly think that gives them the right to spread misinformation about other countries and/or act like their opinions and objectifications of other cultures somehow matters and that somehow we’re in the wrong for criticizing them for making offensive statements and content about a nation they have nothing to do with?
I am a huge fan of Hetalia. I fan girl over America and Japan mostly. Good work on this video! I hope you do more. 👍🏻
Those two are great! America might be my favorite character in the whole show except for Prussia. Thank you for watching! I plan on doing another video on Hetalia in the future.
Awesome!
I love how the animation got better but then they threw us the Italy Demon Dance.
I like to think that it's kinda shows how weird, bad, and funny the world is.
ive only just found this video now and its really refreshing. there has been a sudden crusade against it on tumblr and what not by people who havent seen it and dont really understand it. to the point where people argue that its "cringey" to still like hetalia. I will admit i also was a cringey 13 year old back in its hey day and some may argue that im still cringey but i feel like this video was very fair for its criticism.
This shit taught me more history than my teachers 💀
Also they need to get off that island
I got so annoyed when the island came up
i was super into hetalia as an early teen. i fell out of it after a few years but it never really left me, seeing as very recently i started drawing fanart for it once again just because some i followed drew some fanart themself. i still really love the characters and the character songs so, so much. it'll always have a special place in my heart.
By the way, who the hell is Canada?
Sorry, who?
Wait what? What's that?
Is that a kind of fruit, a Canada?
What is a CAnaDa?
Who?
The way you layered it out was really good so that all options are satisfied
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
My initial exposure to Hetalia was walking in on my sister watching it and the f-word was on a box (I was really young). Later learned the concept of the show, and every so often wondered how it worked exactly, and even how they portrayed America. I started watching it a few days ago and have gotten through season one I think. I don’t take it too seriously lol. I get paranoid about watching shows like this with history because idk how much is accurate vs just a joke or something so I always watch with a grain of salt in tender regard. But it’s entertaining lol. Good analysis.
As an Italian, I loved the fact that this series had ITALY, of all countries, as the MC. And i loved that he’s a silly goober, pretty accurate imo xD
This video just wouldn't leave my recommended page, so I finally clicked on it.
Worth it! I like this analysis, your reasoning is.. well reasonable! And the overall video what enjoyable!
Kudos!
Haha! Thanks, I'm glad you gave it a shot in the end!
When I first watched Hetalia, I was so confused about what was happening and then I re-watched it again and I got it.
And this is why Hetalia is my favorite anime XD
Hetallias budget in the beginning was really bad so they reused scenes to cut on cost
It has weird gay sexual tension and sexual jokes that I don't remember.
