Fresh out of high school I got an apprenticeship at a local butcher. The butcher was a massive jerk and so was his 2IC; they would both constantly harass and make fun of my weight, scream at me for the slightest things, and poke things into my backside if I ever bent over while working. One punishment I had to endure was being made to work an entire shift with a severed pig's tail stuffed between my butt cheeks, leaving the other end hanging out of my pants. I was told this was normal "hazing" of every apprentice.
One of my jobs was to wash the chicken drumsticks that were starting to stink and turn green. I would put the smelly chicken in a big tub of ice and water then the boss would bring out of hiding a bottle of brown liquid and pour that in while standing back as the fumes would take your breath away. I found out this was a banned preservative that could cause severe breathing issues making its use here and in many countries illegal.
It was only after a final straw when the boss threatened to fight me that I had enough and made a point to note down all the workplace health & safety violations and improper food handling violations that I had come across. I found the business card of the DPI inspector that had visited previously and spilled the beans the same day I found a new job in a new industry. The butcher shop closed a month later and I found out he was hit with a multitude of fines.

I have SO many stories I could tell... This is one of the more lighthearted ones.
I used to work for a very large coffee chain (I'm not saying which). The store I worked at was the training store, where they send new managers to learn how to manage stores. I was a shift leader there, and after being a shift leader for a while, my store manager put me in charge of training all new hires because he was impressed with how well new people did after working a couple shifts with me (not new stores managers though. He trained them). I don't know why but, for whatever reason, the people who were learning to manage stores tended to treat me like dirt.
One in particular was learning to manage a store at the same time the one she was going to manage was being constructed, so all of the staff for that store were being trained at ours as well. She was so busy learning things like how to use the computer system, do the paperwork, water filtration, and the like that her people were basically being left to their own devices and floundering. This was making problems for me because I had to keep cleaning up their messes, so I started training them on how to do their jobs properly. For whatever reason, she did not want me anywhere near them. If she saw me training in one of her employees, she would actually come over and basically separate us to keep me away from her people. This went on for 2-3 weeks.
I go to work one day, go into the backroom, and it's just her and my boss. His back was to me, so he didn't see me come in but, she got to watch me stand there and listen as he explains to her that her employees are performing terribly, not meeting expectations, and that if they were sent to her store as is, it would be a disaster. He then tells her that I am really good at keeping new people relaxed so they don't make mistakes from being nervous, showing them how to do things in an easy to remember manner so they rarely have to be shown twice, and in general just great at getting the absolute best out of people working under me, and because of this, she's not going to be training her staff anymore since he wants her to focus on learning her job, and that he's putting me directly in charge of training her employees. At that point, I made a face, stuck out my tongue at her, and then went back to the front of the store.
For the rest of the day, every time she came up to the front of the store, she had the most sheepish expression on her face, and I would just look over, smile, and go back to what I was doing. Before she clocked out that day, she actually came over to apologize and asked if she could take me out to dinner as an apology when I finished my shift too so... Free meal! \o\ \o/ /o/

Oh, that revives a lot of memories.
First off, the usual disclaimer that you'll find on Reddit - the story is not from me but a family member.
The workplace that I'd regularly visit said family member at for a long time back in the early 2000's was a fairly modern warehouse for the time close to an airport in Germany. The main reason I'd tell the guys at the door was to see that the cargo (which I had transported before) reached its destination safely. Which was common practise since we were carrying some high-value goods. Yet it was mostly an excuse to catch up with that one family member I cared about a lot.
She was mainly taking care of the few digital systems that were installed at the warehouse and her husband taught her how to deal with more and more digital stuff that'd get installed, yet she was not certified at all for anything installed post-2010, which she would've needed to supervise the systems. But even though she wasn't, she was the one who understood the stuff better than anyone there. Working hours were long as sh!t, regularly exceeding what was legal, pay was low (certainly among other things because she wasn't certified to do anything), and work was exhausting as well, since she also had to move heavy-ass cargo across about 200k square meters (rough figure!) of warehouse space - by hand most of the time. And while her supervisors were talking highly about her, the bosses always complained about nothing getting done (even though that warehouse was running the highest amount of cargo in the country by a fncking mile while being fairly small for the company).
So one day she called me when I was just getting ready for another flight to Germany, and she told me that she'd resigned as a rival company had approached her and given an offer that paid almost double while being moved the equivalent of two steps up the career's 'ladder', and she had accepted. She'd keep working until the last day of the month, and then move to a different city near a different airport, which I also happened to fly to regularly. The end of the month came and she moved working spaces, and while I knew they'd hired a replacement, at the end of the following month that original warehouse was closing down because it didn't ship nearly half what they'd done while my family member had worked there. Seemed like someone had completely butchered something on the system's server in the warehouse and they weren't able to book anything in the system with a scanner anymore, costing them huge amounts if time and essentially cutting the number of trips to and from the warehouse in half. All the while my family member was making twice the pay, and being completely freed from having to carry cargo. My last visit to the closing warehouse showed me that she had indeed kept the thing running, as her ex-bosses were asking me where my family member was working now. I decided to tell them, and two days later I got a call from my family member while being on vacation. During which she essentially told me that both if her old bosses had applied for the open leading position in that warehouse, both having claimed to have been told by her that the position was open and both having a recommendation letter from her. Which she didn't even remember to have written. When she found out, she immediately went to her new boss and told him that both of them had lied on their resume and forged the recommendation letter. The thing that showed the truth was the signature at the bottom which firstly looked different on both letters and secondly was fairly different to how she would've signed.
So, both of these guys are now serving time in jail for forging documents and my family member has recieved the position that both guys were applying for. Karma's a binch, ain't it?

Walmart in general sucks as a job. I was one of the people throwing truck and stocking shelves. My manager had SERIOUS double standards. With a few of the older employees she was super leaneant. However the first time i had to call in sick because i had thrown up blood. The next day i was called and i quote "A worthless pile of Sh*t" so i quit. funny thing is that i was the only thrower that could throw a 5k peice truck in under 3 hours.

I had one that unfortunately I don’t know the aftermath. I was hired as a typist by an international auto parts factory to get them compliant with new industry standards. Before long, I’m working in another department, managing a long range requirements database. Basically, if the customer wants parts on Jan 1, they need to be on the loading dock Dec 31, they need to be packed by Dec 28, all the way back to raw materials need to be ordered by July 10. Tens of thousands of dollars for every order. When it came time for a review, they said I was doing a good job but based my raise on typist pay. I had been thinking about going back to school so I turned in my notice before long. Might have been 4 weeks instead of two. Time goes by, and they haven’t hired anyone to replace me. I told them I needed to train my replacement- it might not take too long, but there were definitely quirks to the system. They never hired anyone and I have no doubt the whole system collapsed when I left. Hey, I gave them warnings and every opportunity to prevent it. Another dollar an hour might have saved them millions.

My husband has worked for Walmart for over 30 years. He has held a few different positions, but refuses to become management. He's 6 feet tall and strong. The short women he works with rely on him heavily.

Story 7: Surprise, surprise, the quiet/"nice" manager was just as bad as the a-hole assistant manager. Yeah, never trust management-I asked a boss to speak candidly with me in regards to feedback. He had previously been nice and polite but burst into screaming all the problems he was dealing with at me. People who have power will abuse it at some point, no matter what.

This should-have-quit-a-lot-sooner ex-employee would*never* recommend Badwill as a place to work.
The constant job threatening was a thing. Along with higher ups talking about their bonuses in front of employees who've not had a raise in two years. They'd tell four people five ways to do something, then yell at you for doing what you were told, but they conveniently forgot. They claim to help disabled, but god forbid you become disabled while working for them....
Thanks to them, i will never work for a not for profit (that I didn't create) again.

I’d argue that when you’re in a smaller town you have more mom and pop shops because places like Walmart don’t have the metrics to think it’s worth being there so they stay out. When they move in they force other local stores to close. Walmart is basically a one stop shop, so when they come in you lose food stores, flower shops, toy stores, you name it.
