@@Isleofskye Me too. I can not explain the allure. We know what is coming but it still works every time. Perhaps the raw emotion Collins channels (or acts out) is it. You see, hear and feel his soul. Heady stuff.
Collins wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. Phil Collins was the drummer for Genesis and never intended to be the front man. but he ended up being one of the greatest front men of all time.
He was also the drummer for Caravan and BrandX. BrandX's "Moroccan Roll" is an awesome fusion album. The song "Euthanasia Waltz" shows how talented he actually is as a drummer.
But this can't be about divorce. He's been waiting all his life? He saw what you did? The first time/last time we met? I know your face but not sure you know who I am?? This is NOT too an ex. Or her lover. I think someone important that he encountered young did something bad like sexual assault. He knew but didn't think this person knew. One thing comes to mind whenever I hear this song. "Miami Vice." Don Johnson driving down the Beach side avenue in that Ferrari, or whatever he was driving, about to have a showdown with some Bad ass Colombian cocaine dealers . He knows there is a good chance he won't live through it, if they discover he's an undercover cop. A classic scene in television history. It gives you goosebumps.
I was thinking the same thing. If you told me Miami Vice never had any other song on it I might believe you because THIS is the song I associate with MV.
Absolutely. That's what makes this song so amazing. Jann Wimer(sp?) the music composer for MV asked (I think) Phil to do a song for that scene. I'm sure neither Phil or Jann thought it would become a hit but boy did it. MV was the ish in its day and the soundtrack was the bomb. I bought the soundtrack album - it was that good. Yes, they really put out a soundtrack album for MV, which I think is rare for television.
Hell, yes. Phil Collins is a legend.. I've been able to see Phil live 4 times and his live performances are amazing. He's also an amazing drumner, vocalist and songwriter. This song is iconic. It's cool and Phil Collin's still stands in 2020.
Phil was a true artist. Perfect voice, great stage presence, incredible song writer and great musician! He had it all! I say “had” because he’s now retired.
I love to watch this man react. You can tell he truly loves music and to be entertained and those are his main criteria for watching a music video. This one was especially fun, waiting for the build along with him and getting chills from the showmanship and drums kicking in. Thanks for the video. : )
Fun Fact time, Jamel: did you know that that particular drum sound was originated by accident during the recordings of Peter Gabriel's 1979 self-titled album? Phil Collins was the drummer in that record and as he was playing the drums his beats were accidentally picked up by the microphone used by audio engineers to talk to the band from the control room. That microphone wasn’t meant to record music and its heavy compressors were designed to turn down loud sounds while amplifying quiet ones. It also used a noise gate in the mic's signal chain, which meant the captured sounds were cut off shortly after they were picked up. The result was a bright, fleeting percussive sound unlike anything heard in popular music until that moment. Peter loved the effect, and made it the signature sound on the opening track of his album. A year later, Phil featured it in this song and the rest is history. : )
Yep. Genesis was originally led by Peter Gabriel for about 5 albums, then when he went solo Phil Collins came in and still leads Genesis today - as well as having a concurrent solo and acting career. Lots of AMAZING music came out of Genesis since the 70s
When he was with Genesis, another great was I Can't Dance. His solo work is all good i got a wish list to see you do. "Against All Odds", "Take Me Home", "Sussudio", "Another Day in Paradise", and "True Colors".
Stéphane Chamberland I can't disagree with you more. It certainly wasn't the best, and it was overplayed for sure, thanks to the silly video they released for it in the heyday of MTV and VH1. It's just a fun song they did. Kinda like "Jesus, He Knows Me". It wasn't groundbreaking nor an innovative show of musical or vocal prowess... it was just a really talented band having fun while taking a stab at social hypocrisy. They weren't taking themselves too seriously with either song, and that's an attractive thing for a band to do when they're on top of the world. All hits can't be mind-blowing. And while this subject is largely contingent on perspective, I'd have to say the worst songs made under the Genesis' name was some of the earlier more looney experimental stuff helmed by Peter Gabriel, when he was a large influence on their direction, and he was getting bored with popular music and doing some pretty weird stuff. I loved Gabriel's first decade or two of solo work, but I didn't enjoy but only a few really good songs he did during Genesis.
Hey, Jamal! I came across your show this evening and spent the whole evening listening to your “reaction” sets. I’m a 68 (yep! 68) year old retired teacher. I grew up listening to many of the tunes you played tonight. When I was teaching, I had a long commute and my kids & I listened to Top 40 music and sang out our lungs!in my classes, I would play music from the time period or the place we were learning about. If the kids were quiet and working, I’d let them listen to the radio. Music connects us. It tells the story of our time. It keeps me young at heart. In my sociology class, Friday’s were known to be Free Flow Friday’s”, and volunteers would rhyme and flow. It was so beautiful! We had awards for the most Audacious Rhyme-just a xeroxed certificate that was treasured by the recipient. Oh, I enjoyed listening to your commentary on “In The Air Tonight” every kid in class could throw down that drum solo on his desk!🙂 I wasn’t that the concert that your video was from, but I did see that concert. Amazing! And as you said, The Air That Night set the mood (even if it wasn’t 4/20!😉). Thanks for making an old woman feel younger by playing the songs of my youth!
Agreed, it's ashamed that we lost Karen so young and talented. She was in a class all in its own, and Phil with timing and having everyone being estatic waiting for that moment. Oh Lord 🖤
Soling106 David Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana turned frontman for the Foo Fighters. He said there’s a reason drummers are drummers, they don’t like the spotlight. They like the back of the stage. Being out front can be Terrifying. A large part of Karen Carpenters anorexia was always worrying if she looked good enough to be out front. She really just wanted To sit in the back and drum and sing.
He was talking about early Genesis. When they were prog rock band! Phil on drums better than Neil imo! Listen to The Cinema Show by Genesis. Genesis in 70s were the best prog rock band and back then Phil even did not know that he has vocal. He was monstrous drummer.
The song was used in the pilot episode of “Miami Vice” and is the exact moment that launched the show into what it would become! It literally change the way Music would be used in TV shows from that moment on!
Phil's masterpiece. Gives me goosebumps too. You should react to the two Phil's. Easy Lover by Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey from EWF. You have to watch the actual video and how they react to each other.
Imagine watching Miami Vice with Sunny and Tubbs on the way to a dangerous bust, driving that black Ferrari and this song is playing in the background and becoming louder and more dominate as they drove down the highway. Awesome,
Phil was a world class drummer, just the drummer, in the early days of Genesis. When Peter Gabriel quit, after auditioning singers the guys told him just to sing. Early jazz influences, and he plays left handed. He's quite an amazing man.
This song was a huge staple of the 80s both before, and after it was used in the Miami Vice television series. It basically had a double life, before it ever had a chance to die out. And has lived strong ever since. I had a friend in high school named Colin, and I used to call him Phil all the time after an incident where he was drumming on the walls of the school dark room while the teachers were having a meeting in the other room. :D

“Easy Lover” with Philip Bailey from Earth, Wind and Fire. It’s pretty good song. Supposedly this song was on track B and they needed a song just to fill in the album. They never thought it would reach to the top in the 80’s. Surprisingly it did!!

I was wondering if anyone else would mention Miami Vice. I've watched dozens of reactions to this song and no one mentions it. I can still see the scene clearly each time I hear this song. The build up gives me anxiety still. Love it!
Phil has been the biggest inspiration for why I play the drums. And Chester Thompson, his drummer when Phil isn't playing, is just as amazing on drums. His whole band is amazing. When I first saw him I lost my freaking mind when the drums pop up at the top of the stage and he started playing that part.

Phil Collins is one of the best rock drummers of all time. His drumming on the Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) is phenomenal.
A1A beachfront Avenue?
I was thinking the same thing. If you told me Miami Vice never had any other song on it I might believe you because THIS is the song I associate with MV.
Absolutely. That's what makes this song so amazing. Jann Wimer(sp?) the music composer for MV asked (I think) Phil to do a song for that scene. I'm sure neither Phil or Jann thought it would become a hit but boy did it. MV was the ish in its day and the soundtrack was the bomb. I bought the soundtrack album - it was that good. Yes, they really put out a soundtrack album for MV, which I think is rare for television.
Lee 276: Good memories! Great show, fantastic music! (It was Jan Hammer👍🏼 who was that amazing composer/musician!)
We need him to do a reaction to that scene.
It's almost an emotional experience. When a song can touch your very soul, that's what it's all about!
Phil Collins is one of the best drummers ever.
It truly is a musical instrument in his hands
Reverse gating. And that accident became the drum sound for the 80s.
Yep. Genesis was originally led by Peter Gabriel for about 5 albums, then when he went solo Phil Collins came in and still leads Genesis today - as well as having a concurrent solo and acting career. Lots of AMAZING music came out of Genesis since the 70s
Very interesting. Accidents aren't necessarily a bad thing. Lol
@@paulavance5096 , one of my art instructors called things like that "happy accidents."
@@wolf762x51 Exactly!
When he was with Genesis, another great was I Can't Dance. His solo work is all good i got a wish list to see you do. "Against All Odds", "Take Me Home", "Sussudio", "Another Day in Paradise", and "True Colors".
I Can't Dance ...by far THE worst song of Genesis !
Collins used to be an excellent drummer. Then sold out. And divorced his first wife by email. He’s a piece of shit in my book.
Sussudio video is instant me being 17 again. Lol. I Cant Dance is awesome too, killer rhythm vibe.
@@jeremyleneave5618 Only Sussudio for me ! I remember seing it many times on Friday Night Videos and on Much Music here in Canada ! ;-)
Amazing teacher!
Colleen Davis you are the best. You sound like the best teacher.
favorite teacher I never had.
Phil Collins and Karen Carpenter… Two amazing drummers who ended up being phenomenal lead singers!
Exactly. So true
Hear! Hear! Fabulous stuff
And Don Henley,, also an Amazing singer songwriter and Drummer/Percussionist.
"I Don't Care Anymore" is a must from his solo career.
Neil Peart, of Rush, when he heard Phil Collins on drums said "So that's how good you need to be now". That's a story Neil told.
I guess Neil just didn't understand Phil's style of music
@@NefariousDreary It was a compliment.
@@direnova6284 oh... lol I still don't get it. But I'll take your word for it
He was talking about early Genesis. When they were prog rock band! Phil on drums better than Neil imo! Listen to The Cinema Show by Genesis. Genesis in 70s were the best prog rock band and back then Phil even did not know that he has vocal. He was monstrous drummer.
@@garri5108 oh wow. Alright then! Thanks dude!
Phil don't play. You can tell he means what he is singing and playing. My favorite musician out there.
The song was used in the pilot episode of “Miami Vice” and is the exact moment that launched the show into what it would become! It literally change the way Music would be used in TV shows from that moment on!
One of my favorite Phil Collins songs is “Against all Odds”....brings me right back to those days
Also “another day in paradise” the lyrics really touch me
Phil's masterpiece. Gives me goosebumps too. You should react to the two Phil's. Easy Lover by Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey from EWF. You have to watch the actual video and how they react to each other.
Phil has been the drummer in all of his music.
And, he plays piano, too!!
Imagine watching Miami Vice with Sunny and Tubbs on the way to a dangerous bust, driving that black Ferrari and this song is playing in the background and becoming louder and more dominate as they drove down the highway. Awesome,
The best!
You had me at bust…giggity
epic
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh, all I see while Air Drumming!
❤❤ That show saved my life.
“I don’t care anymore”, please check it out! Was he the drummer ? Oh heck yes! Phil hardcore knows the drums, amongst other things-facts! -❤️💛🤘🏼✌️
Phil was a world class drummer, just the drummer, in the early days of Genesis. When Peter Gabriel quit, after auditioning singers the guys told him just to sing. Early jazz influences, and he plays left handed. He's quite an amazing man.
Mike Tyson, "Quiet, this is my favorite part" The Hangover.
How can his voice be EVEN BETTER live!
Phil Collins is my favorite musician. A very underrated drummer. Man do I miss the music of the 80's.
This song is simply... MAGESTIC. I would be crying in that concert man!!!
80’s Miami Vice, Crockett and Tubbs racing around in a Ferrari Testarossa shooting the place up!!
Yes, yes and yes Miami Vice days
Crockett was driving his Ferrari Daytona Spyder 365 GTS/4 in the very first episode of Miami Vice where this song was used!
It was the phone call to his wife in the first episode that did it for me.
Yeah, given how much Jamel likes the song, he should watch the Miami Vice episode where it first aired.
The creator was having a drink one night and wrote on his napkin "MTV Cops". Miami Vice was born. Great music in that show.
This song makes me literally tear up every time I listen to it. Serious emotion. Thank you for covering this amazing man and band.
Jamel: I am so grateful to you and all that you do to entertain us during these crazy times.
a true GOAT!!!!! Phil does it better than almost all!!!
I saw Phil back in April 1997, when he played a show in Champaign, IL. This song was pure awesome then, and it's only gotten better with age.
He was the drummer in Genesis!!!
The album that song appears on, Phil recorded ALL instrumentals himself. Guys a genius.
Alec Cope, if you are talking about “Face Value”, Phil did a lot of it himself but he did have “guest” players too, such as Eric Clapton.
I have no idea why he gets so much stick from people
@@ajmoore2201 i know. My brother cant stand him and i have no idea why. He is team Gabriel and i dont know why you cant be both. =r=ree ed
I mean i love Roth and Hagar when it comes to Van Halen.
When the drums start i cant get mike Tyson out of my head since the hangover movie. Shh. I love this part. Lol
@@studiokohl1 Well said. I love both Collins and Gabriel Genesis, and the same goes for their solo careers
And Steve Winwood did every instrument and co wrote the songs on Ark of a Diver. Genius indeed:)
I can't tell you how happy it makes me feel to see your joy when watching some of my favourite music. I saw Phil live early 2019, and although he isn't well enough to play drums anymore, his voice is still great, and his 17yr old son did a stellar job playing the drums for that show. Keep up the good work!
I’ve always been his biggest fan And I’m absolutely devastated that he can’t play anymore
Killed it! This was back when people where still musicians and could sing live!
They still can
@@adamsmithhobbs4702 yeah, that's why the new generation uses auto tune and fake music, and the older generation doesn't
This song made look the new singers really bad
I remember when I first heard this song. My mom knew what was coming, so she turned the volume to max during the drum solo. I swear I felt those drums in my SOUL. XD
Ha ha.. everyone did that when the song played on the radio when it first came out! Did she do the obligatory air-drumming, too?
@@KGP2010 Who doesn't do the air-drumming when he hits that epic drum fill. It's that amazing.

Please do Phil Collins, I Don't Care Anymore. Great drums and emotion in the vocals.
John Donnelly agreed!!!✌🏼💜✊🏼
I like the drum line in that one, but he's not drumming on the official video.
Saw him live in Stuttgart last summer. His son is doing the drumming these days. Such an iconic piece, everyone in the stadium sang/played along!
The one thing I will always regret is not seeing Phil Collins live!
This bald little British dude rocks. A hell of a drummer too. Apparently he hadn't played for a long time due to a shoulder injury, so I was surprised and thrilled to see this. It was a privilege to see him in concert back in the 90s.
Please react to Phil Collins and Philip Bailey Bailey She's an Easy Lover. Thanks for your reactions!
Great song!
Oh yeah!
S. Brown Definitely!! ✌🏼💜✊🏼
Yes!! It’s SO good 👍🏻
would be great pick!
That moment when you remember, "Oh yeah, Phil Collins is a drummer."
Brilliant song! Watched him live in Hyde Park in 2017. His son, 15 years old, played the drums. Everyone was waiting to see how he did it, and he nailed it!!! :-D
Yass! Those drums just give me life! No matter how many times I hear this song.
This song was perfectly used in Miami Vice. Brings back that series every time I hear this. Love it.

It’s pretty good song. Supposedly this song was on track B and they needed a song just to fill in the album. They never thought it would reach to the top in the 80’s. Surprisingly it did!!
oohhh that's a good one too!
Gotta love how the audience excitement builds as he approaches the drum kit, they know whats coming!
The "In the Air Tonight" Scene from is arguably the most memorable and famous scene from the Miami Vice television series, and is regularly cited as one of the greatest, most influential moments in the history of television. Original air date September 16, 1984
"In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins
I was wondering if anyone else would mention Miami Vice. I've watched dozens of reactions to this song and no one mentions it. I can still see the scene clearly each time I hear this song. The build up gives me anxiety still. Love it!

Phil has been the biggest inspiration for why I play the drums. And Chester Thompson, his drummer when Phil isn't playing, is just as amazing on drums. His whole band is amazing. When I first saw him I lost my freaking mind when the drums pop up at the top of the stage and he started playing that part.
Phil is the drummer, Chills everytime!! I have never seen the live in all these years!! Thank you for sharing it!!
The timing of this performance the talented musicians and backing vocals are sublime
My dad's favorite singer. I remember I didn't like his music growing up because I didn't have a great relationship with my dad. But now I actually appreciate his music. Against all odds is another great song.
Amazing how our life's soundtrack evolves like that, I was the same way with Johnny Cash and my granddad.
@@maldad9073 Yes- I like how you phrased that. We evolve with the music.
Phill Collins is one of those writer, singer, performers, that truly reach your soul and twist!
This performance was epic. Him pacing back and forth on the stage was like a lion walking back and forth in front of the fence at a zoo.
Is his voice a bit nasal here though?
