He was a pretty good drummer, but this song isn't a shining example of his capabilities. The arrangement and beat of this song are pretty basic and standard. Far cry from the technical drumming from Genesis.

40+ years later I STILL get chills and I still smile when those drums kick in. I saw Phil Collins in the 90s, in the round, at the Orlando Arena. He entered down the steps right beside me. We could hear him singing, but couldn't find him. My husband nudged me and he was standing next to me. I've never felt that feeling before or since. Took my breath away.

When Phil wrote this song, his marriage was failing and he understood that it was going to end in divorce. He decided to write this song to capture all the feelings. The hatred, mistrust and resentment he was feeling. The best songs are the ones written from the heart. When you can just let go and spill your heart out on a page, you'll write something special every time.

As a child of the 80's, I've heard this song many, many times. To me, the opening couple minutes are a seething anger, gritting his teeth and fighting to stay calm, and at the drum breakdown that anger breaks out and rages. It's powerful because the quiet anger is so menacing, and the last minute or so is the storm breaking.

Phil is a musical genius. He obviously sings but he also plays every instrument in that band. He wrote the lyrics, wrote the music, composed, arranged and performed all of his own material. The guy is absolutely a legend.
In the pop world, this was an unexpected thing to happen. Many pop songs back then were light and cheery and fluffy and the lyrics didn't really mean much (don't get me wrong, some people actually wrote good lyrics but not many, so pop music in general was hot air).
This song came in swinging a sledge hammer. It was dark and moody and catchy and has GREAT lyrics.
It was about his divorce; he was a very bitter person when he wrote this, it was a very low point in his life. He got better over time but it is weird that this one turned out to be one of his biggest hits.

There's also a story how he joined Genesis. Literally, they needed a new drummer and they posted an add in newspaper, saying that they're seeking a drummer. Phil Collins saw it, cut it out and went there and said that he's there to join as a drummer. Band looked him over, gave him a test and said "You're good, and you're hired". So yeah, joined through newspaper ad :)
When Peter Gabriel, lead singer left the band, they needed a new singer but didn't quite have one right out of the blue. Phil Collins said he can do it and he did, but during all that time, they considered that a "temporary solution". They had a tour to deal with and so on. Once thing calmed down, they started to look for a new lead singer, after all they were missing one and their drummer had to fill in. But after several tries and candidates, they just couldn't find anyone who would have given them the "feeling" and style what they've become used to with Phil Collins singing. At some point they said "why do we actually waste time on this when we've got the right singer, right here?", referring to Phil Collins and well, the rest is history. No, a legend. Especially since technique wise, singing and drumming are very different and yet he can combine both. Not only that, but he is so good that his singing didn't affect his drumming and his drumming didn't affect his singing and both are physical and very demanding roles. So yeah, Phil Collins is amazing. A legend.

It goes without saying that Collins is a musical genius. What I want to comment on is the very well-thought-out production of this number, from the lighting, the echoing effect of certain repeated phrases that gives them a new nuance, his outfit, the walking, the guitar scream to take you out of the trance the beginning build-up has lulled you into before Collins is even on the stage. It's just a total package of magnificence.

I'm always amazed that people don't know or forget that Phil is a DRUMMER who can sing.
And also how steady his voise is when he plays is also AMAZING.
The dark lyrics and moody drum sounds reflected the anger and sadness the musician felt leading up to and following their 1980 divorce.
Collins has explained that the drowning is symbolic, representing the pain and anger he was feeling at the time. The line really connected as a rebuke, entering the lexicon along with sayings like "I wouldn't give you the time of day" and "not if you were the last person on Earth."

      Erm, no.
Phil was given a toy drum set when he was 5, Phil`s uncles made him a drum set when he was young, he always wanted to be a drummer.
At 14, he went to the Barbra Speake stage school, his first major role was HDN, but then went on to play the Artful Dodger Oliver Twist on the West End, he didnt really start singing, as in a band, until he joined the band Flaming Youth, even though he was not the lead singer, he was the drummer, but he did sing lead on a few of their tracks.
He was certainly in the audience in Hard Days Night, but his sceen was cut!
The Beatles were a major influence to him, but he certainly didnt decide to be a singer because of HDN, and definately didnt decide to learn the drums because of it.

Ok, I know something about this song's history, so I'll spill the beans.
He wrote this as an "ode" to the guy that cheated with his first wife. Dude was an interior decorator doing work on Phil's house.
Legend is that he saw them having sex, but never said a word at that time, just left.
He later saw the man, confronted and fired him, then divorced his wife.
The album this song was released on had a speaker with a paint can on it.
Since then, he said in multiple interviews it wasn't about that.
But the band member ALL said it was. ... gives new meaning the the "uh, uh, uh, uh, uh..." part, aye?
He saw it. Watch his face, even decades later, the contempt is still visceral.

I also heard she wiped out his bank account and took off with the kids. Also his 2nd and 3rd wife cheated. Him $the 3rd wife reunited but then didn’t want to move out the mansion even after he found out she was secretly married. They just all used him. So sad, he’s now in his 70’s and can’t hold a drum stick due to neurological issues. He later in a wheelchair due to chronic back pain. He is a music legend who knows how to play all instruments. I just love him
