@@patrickq7489 Phil Collins is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers in both Rock and Jazz. He is the exact opposite of an underrated drummer, even by people who do not like his music. Please look up the dictionary definition of the word "underrated".
Very true. My first ever live performance was a grammar school graduation gift (13 yrs old). It was the Supreme's just after Diana Ross went solo. Dad whispered to me, don't be upset if they don't sound like the recording or on the radio. At the opening note, I just turned to him and said you got that wrong. They were better than studio. LOL
there absolutely was auto tune when this came out, he was using auto tune and a vocoder for the original recording. the difference is he used it as an effect to highlight certain notes not to tune the whole song.
The bassist with the long white beard playing on stage with him is Leland Sklar, one of the most recognizable maestros of his instrument. He has contributed to over 2,000 albums as a session musician and toured with Collins and several big name bands.
If you noticed, the audience cheered before he reached the drums because they knew what was coming. You may know this, but he was the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Gabriel left the band and they tried out several new lead singers, there wasn’t one they were happy with. Someone in the band knew Phil could sing, so they said he should try out. That is how he became a lead singer. Years later he was asked, did he consider himself a drummer or a singer...he said drummer. People in this audience would have known of his drumming for Genesis, maybe seen him in concert as the drummer, so that is why people get excited to hear him play. Saw him live as the lead for Genesis, yes he sings this well.
So I love Phil Collins but my favorite artist is Eric Clapton. Little know fact (I think) I got to watch Eric Clapton live at his 24 Nights concert in England during the 90's and I remember watching Phil play drums for Eric Clapton in that concert and it was awesome.
And Phil's son also plays the drums and went on tour with them in 2020 to do just that. :) Also, saw Genesis in concert, and went to Phil Collins' But Seriously Tour. "Another Day in Paradise" might be a good choice. But my favorite? "Mama". Still gives me chills.
No lip syncing here Jay. Yer boy Phil can sing. He is one of the nicest guys in the business. Please listen to phil singing "against all odds" a beautiful song. Xxxxx
Phill Collins was in Genesis before going solo. Started as the drummer then took over lead vocals when Peter Gabriel left. And for female friday, check out the cover of this song by In This Moment.
For my wife and I, that is our song. The lyrics were the truth for both of us before we finally figured out who we were, worked things out between us, and decided to get married. It will be 25 years for us next March. 😁
I love it how the audience starts going nuts in the seconds leading up to the big drum drop. It's one of the most recognizable bridges in all of musical history!
It is certainly one of, if not the most iconic drum fills when he comes in, in rock history. Another thing that gets overlooked in this song musically is that even with all of the drumming, there are no cymbal crashes at the end of the fills which makes it very unique and affects the overall feel of the song rhythmically.
The most cutting line in the song for me was always: "It's the first time, and the last time we ever met." Representing that moment when you finally see someone for who they always were and walk away. Oof... Brutal truth wrapped in a sick drop that culminates in an outpour of pure righteous indignation in the moment of triumph you get when you realize you never have to deal with that person again.
I'm pretty sure it's required by law in some places. Cop: Can you tell me why your car drifted out of lane back there? You: Sorry, Officer, but "In the Air Tonight" was on the radio.
What always got me was how he could play those drums so energetically & hold strong w/ a stretching note from singing @ the same time. So fluid & talented!
That's what amazes me about it. Like, singing that live (presumably at the end of the gig too) would be hard anyway, but now do it while swinging both arms in rhythym. People don't factor that in really, your body shape and posture etc affects your voice, singing while drumming is incredibly hard. Pick a song you know the words to and then try singing along perfectly while pretending to drum along at the same time. Even if you don't know how to drum, just think about how hard that would be to do both flawlessly.
Phil Colins had many hits. ''Another Day In Paradise'' his dedicated to all the Homeless people. This title mean for us who have a roof over our heads, we live in paradise compared to those who are homeless. The official video is very powerful.
I can't believe you asked if Phil Collins was "lip syncing" He does not need to do that. Also, it's incredibly difficult to play the drums and sing at the same time. This man is Iconic!! Luv you guys!! ☺️
This man is a legend they don’t make them like this anymore. I watched him in concert 5 times in late 80’s amd 90’s this guy sounds better live than on radio. He is a true legend. One of the most humble human beings you will ever meet.
Not a bad tune......seems to have gotten a 'Best Music, Original Song' nomination at the Academy Awards 1985 loosing out to 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' by Stevie Wonder. Nice company to be put with.
He does put on a great show ….. he can’t play anymore due to complications. His 18 year old Son now plays for him on his live shows and Nicholas can play some drums .
My dad met Phil Collins in an elevator once in a hotel in the 80's. There was some kinda story out about him at that time that my dad had read or heard on the news and he said something to him about it (don't remember what it was or what my dad said he said to him) and Phil Collins replied to him shrugging his shoulders like "Yeah well.. Shit happens" and just smiled. Seemed like a really cool person my dad said.. Well, that's my secondhand story about Phil Collins. Yes the build up and release on this song is pretty much unmatched for me too. Love it!
So so so many Phil Collins songs! "Another Day in Paradise" "Sussudio" "Easy Lover" "Against All Odds" "Two Hearts" "Don't Lose My Number" "Something Happened on the way to Heaven" Many many more...and that's just solo, he also had a gazillion hits as the lead singer of Genesis!
It's so funny to think how many bad critic reviews there are for Sussidio even though it's a good song I remember one was something like "This would be the theme to the Third Reich"
Jellyfish, One of the most underrated that I’m sure you haven’t heard of, has a drummer/singer. They were a 90s band in Seattle that did Beatles like pop. They were overshadowed by the grunge scene. I love me some grunge but Jellyfish should have been WAY more well known. They had stage presence, studio mastery, their songs were as catch as can be, crazy musical talent. @@tammypearson989 LOL! I end up doing "accidental" binges. I start with a reaction video which leads me straight to the artists. I have to admit, some of the reactors are so annoying you can't appreciate the song. Not the Rob Squad, but some others.
In 1989, between solo albums and collaborations with his bandmates in Genesis, Phil averaged 4 plays an hour on national radio. If you listened to the radio for 15 minutes, you heard Phil Collins--that's strong.✌
I’ve seen him in concern with Genesis and solo since the 80’s and am always amazed at how he commands an audience. This live version of In the Air, always gave me chills.
Another beautiful song by Phil is "you'll be in my heart" from the soundtrack to Disney's Tarzan. He wrote all the songs for that film. An immensely talented man. Xxxxxxx
It's funny, at large events, rallies, conventions, whatever, when this song is playing in the background you'll see people just suddenly in unison do the air drumming when it hits. It's like muscle memory now for people.
They just don’t have any current artists like this anymore. My husband and I tell our kids all the time that the music they listen to will never stand the test of time like the music we grew up listening to.
@@THE-MAD-TECHIE Agreed! The music my son, 19, listens to is crap. No meaning or messages in any of it! I will say him and his friends have been listening to a lot of the old R&B/Motown artists and they love it, so maybe there’s hope for him after all?!
Real artists dont have to lip sync? They don't needed recorded music either. They play and sing! The younger generation never really seen this before. Todays crap doesnt hold a candle to yesterdays artist/music. And I dont like when they take someone elses music and try to make it their own.
Against All Odds is another classic Phil Collins song. I've been to see him in concert at least half a dozen times and he's always amazing. Especially when you consider he manages to keep his vocals steady, no wavering with exertion, while physically pounding those drums. Still my fave singer of all time. Also love his songs with Genesis, particularly Dreaming While You Sleep.
I saw him sing this song live in concert in Toronto. I had third row seats and when he did this song, I went by the 10-foot speakers and was about 8 feet away from Phil. Everytime he hit a drum the speakers pumped out the vibration and it felt like a bomb exploded! I will never forget it as long as I live!
Fun fact about Phil Collins..... he’s also written and performed songs for Disney movies, Brother Bear and Tarzan - he has an Academy Award for best original song “You’ll Be In My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan movie. He is extremely talented!
My kids grew up watching the French version of Tarzan, and Phil Collins did the songs in French! I was so impressed! Usually my kids would lose interest during the songs in Disney movies because they would be in English and they didn’t understand the lyrics. Some artists had no excuse for not singing the songs for the French versions (looking at you, Celine Dion)
NOT LIPSYNCING GUYS. He is amazing. He doesnt sound exactly like studio to me but extremely close. People who sound the same live is just on another level.👌
Never forget that Karen Carpenter is a drummer/singer. Not that Phil isn't great, he is, right there at the top among the best selling artists, both solo and as part Genesis. But Karen was once ranked over Led Zeppelin's John Bonham for drumming ability. Karen was an insanely good drummer and a very reluctant singer/front that had arguably the purest voice around.
Levon Helm, the drummer/singer for "The Band", is tops on my list. Dude was an amazing musician and singer, and he had a decent acting career also. He played a minor role in the movie "Shooter" with Mark Walberg. Also played Loretta Lynn's father in "Coal Miners Daughter". But the hits he had with "The Band" are still some of my favorites. "The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Cripple Creek". ✌
Genesis was one of the greatest prog rock bands ever. It was lead by Peter Gabriel. Phil was the drummer. They were giants. Peter Gabriel left the band to start a solo career. Phil, the drummer, took over singing duties. His band BrandX was a jazz-fusion band and their album Moroccan Roll was my favorite album in college. Phil is a world-class drummer.

I loved in miami vice like anywhere else but was first majorly known for 'Risky Business' with Tom cruise in early 80s
They don’t make em like Phil anymore. Immense talent.
Here is a gig most folks don't know about: Phil Collins in the jazz fusion band Brand X

The song was the back drop from the infamous Sex on the Train scene in Risky Business. Tom Cruise Rebecca De mornay.
Highly underrated drummer
@@patrickq7489 Phil Collins is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers in both Rock and Jazz. He is the exact opposite of an underrated drummer, even by people who do not like his music.
Please look up the dictionary definition of the word "underrated".
His son is actually doing a good job of following in his footsteps.
There was no such thing as auto tune, the artist had to be able to bring it. Its called practice and talent. There was no bs back then.
LOL
there absolutely was auto tune when this came out, he was using auto tune and a vocoder for the original recording. the difference is he used it as an effect to highlight certain notes not to tune the whole song.
fun fact Phil Collins and his recording engineer accidentally invented "gated reverb" on this album. the fat drum sound of the 80's
Back then in 2004? There is a backing track that he's singing along to.
And integrity
The bassist with the long white beard playing on stage with him is Leland Sklar, one of the most recognizable maestros of his instrument. He has contributed to over 2,000 albums as a session musician and toured with Collins and several big name bands.
The way Amber’s face lights up when she sees the drums…joyful!
Yes, and he was an amazing part of Genesis. Check them out
So I love Phil Collins but my favorite artist is Eric Clapton.
Also, saw Genesis in concert, and went to Phil Collins' But Seriously Tour. "Another Day in Paradise" might be a good choice. But my favorite? "Mama". Still gives me chills.
I think he was way better singer than Peter Gabriel and plus drummer is was an added bonus.
@@finagin7900" I wish it would rain down"
I love the way Amber always looks like she is just soaking it all in.
No lip syncing here Jay. Yer boy Phil can sing. He is one of the nicest guys in the business.
Please listen to phil singing "against all odds" a beautiful song. Xxxxx
Talented artists can pull off live performances with no tricks.
Oh my favorite of all time = against all odds 😍
one of my favorites for sure
Agreed 💯
Phil’s got one of the best voices ever
No lip syncing

Can’t hear the song without seeing Crockett and Tubbs flying along in a convertible in Miami Vice! Cool personified.
That's where I go in my minds eye EVERY TIME I hear this song
Absolutely
YES!
One of the best television scenes ever!
Omg I was just thinking that hahaha
Phil collins certainly does NOT lip sync. 😳 That is all talent.
Phill Collins was in Genesis before going solo.
Started as the drummer then took over lead vocals when Peter Gabriel left.
And for female friday, check out the cover of this song by In This Moment.
👍
Saw Genesis 2 times and Phil solo twice. Right up there with some of the best Ive seen including David Bowie & The Boss.
and friday follows thuesday
I love how they build the intensity and atmosphere to a crescendo
Phil Collins wouldn’t lip sync. There are definitely places that sound different.
Against All Odds is another of his biggest hits. My personal fave. Also You Can't Hurry Love is another really fun - more upbeat song.
Against All Odds is incredible...! Another Day In Paradise as well
You can't hurry love is best by Diana Ross and the supremes.
Legend!! I'm soooo happy to see younger generations discover music I grew up with no matter the genre! ❤❤❤
I was in absolute awe when I saw him live. He is absolutely incredible. He played for over 3 hours. No opening acts.
Don Henley from The Eagles would sit beside Phil on the throne of singing drummers ;)
no don is number 1
Levon Helm from The Band would be on a throne a level higher.
Karen Carpenter would be way up there.
Deen Castronovo is up there, too.
Yeah, but...
Don Henley is a total ass.
Phil Collins is an awesome guy.
He always sings point on!! No lip syncing ever.💖💖😇
That's exactly what Phil was meaning in this song... it's about his divorce in the early 80s
Poetry. Sheer Effin' Poetry.
Spot on mate
For me, it’s “ I remember don’t worry, how could I forget ….”
@@kryptotransit no it isn't. It's about a person who let someone else drown and didn't do anything
Phil did not lip sync! He's just a flawless performer, like Peter Gabriel. Just an amazing performer.
There is no one that doesn't do the air drums anytime this song comes on
Truth
I just get on my real drums.
Except those people who don't have arms.
Just saying.
I'm pretty sure it's required by law in some places.
Cop: Can you tell me why your car drifted out of lane back there?
You: Sorry, Officer, but "In the Air Tonight" was on the radio.
Including Iron Mike Tyson
Excellent song
"hits" are the worst way to know (or the best way not to know) a genius like Phil Collins
I love his songs. He is great.
"In the air tonight" is probably one of the most iconic songs of the 80s.
Phill and his band dont need autotune or lipsinc, there just that good.
Real Artists don't need to "Fake it" !! It's about the music not the money !! Nothing beats a live performance !! 🤘
I can't believe you asked if Phil Collins was "lip syncing" He does not need to do that. Also, it's incredibly difficult to play the drums and sing at the same time. This man is Iconic!! Luv you guys!! ☺️
I learned how hard it was to sing and play drums is hard from a episode of the cartoon show “Arthur” which I watched with my daughter. She’s 24 now.
This man is a legend they don’t make them like this anymore. I watched him in concert 5 times in late 80’s amd 90’s this guy sounds better live than on radio. He is a true legend. One of the most humble human beings you will ever meet.
My favorite is “Against All Odds”. It’s so beautiful.
Agree
Not a bad tune......seems to have gotten a 'Best Music, Original Song' nomination at the Academy Awards 1985 loosing out to 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' by Stevie Wonder. Nice company to be put with.
"One More Night" is my favorite 💚💙💜
Phil Collins is the GOAT drummer.
My favorite Phil Collins song is “I Wish it Would Rain Down”
I LOVE THAT SONG! Alexa knows when I say play Phil that's the first one to play 💜💜💜
Phil pours his heart into it, but Eric Clapton on guitar and Pino Palladino on bass are what really make that song.
and a fun video
@@kelly9876 one of all my time favorite videos, his sense of the absurd is subtle but great
He does put on a great show ….. he can’t play anymore due to complications. His 18 year old Son now plays for him on his live shows and Nicholas can play some drums .
I didn't know this. Thank you for the info!
@@michonneokoye4990 Neither did I ... I guess we wish the great talents of our youth will be the same and live forever that way.
I didn't know this either, thank you for the info! Very cool that his son does play...
You want to shed a tear ? ' Another day in Paradise. '
Yes. The song with the video.
Journey great live performance.
Casual Phil. Nothing casual about Phil.
You can feel the energy from the crowd-every time a new sound is introduced!$❤❤
He's a professional and doesn't lip sinc, that's how good he is. A remarkable performance by one the biggest selling music artist.. cA
I happen to like this better than the studio version this is phenomenal the added extras are fantastic
Love it!
Another great drummer/singer: Don Henley of The Eagles, Hotel California
And another, Dave Grohl (was the drummer for Nirvana before being lead singer for Foo Fighters) ❤
So so so many Phil Collins songs!
"Another Day in Paradise"
"Sussudio"
"Easy Lover"
"Against All Odds"
"Two Hearts"
"Don't Lose My Number"
"Something Happened on the way to Heaven"
Many many more...and that's just solo, he also had a gazillion hits as the lead singer of Genesis!
Ive never heard a Phil Collins song I didnt love, sadly I lost my music collection in a fire and havent been able to afford to it again :(
It's so funny to think how many bad critic reviews there are for Sussidio even though it's a good song
I remember one was something like "This would be the theme to the Third Reich"
I’m pretty sure he did a cover of a supremes song aswell.
Another Day in Paradise 🔥❤️
Don Henley from the Eagles plays drums and sings. Check out “Hotel California”!
Check them out!

They did a reaction to Hotel California already. Rob liked "the dude with the afro."
@@wandaminter9421 didn’t know, will check it out, might to a binge before I make requests?🤘
Phil used to be the Drummer of the Band, Brad Arnold the Lead Singer of Three Doors Down was also the Original Drummer, but stepped up when their first lead quit
I used to live in Chicago and my stepmom would listen to this station and I would call it the Phil Collins station. Yes I agree
I’ve seen him in concern with Genesis and solo since the 80’s and am always amazed at how he commands an audience. This live version of In the Air, always gave me chills.
Sorry, I can tell the difference big time. He is just that good.
I can too. And I actually prefer the live version over the studio version.
Another beautiful song by Phil is "you'll be in my heart" from the soundtrack to Disney's Tarzan. He wrote all the songs for that film. An immensely talented man. Xxxxxxx
Love that song!
The way he walks to the drums at the perfect time is amazing
Oooooo pausing in drum solo is a no no😂. Don’t piss Phil off! What an iconic performance huh?
It's funny, at large events, rallies, conventions, whatever, when this song is playing in the background you'll see people just suddenly in unison do the air drumming when it hits. It's like muscle memory now for people.
Yep 💥 Air drum EVERY time! EVERY time, in public, the mall, pumping gas...😎 Air drum, every time that moment comes💥 always. I can't help it 🤩
They just don’t have any current artists like this anymore. My husband and I tell our kids all the time that the music they listen to will never stand the test of time like the music we grew up listening to.
Some of it will. It's just such a different delivery system we miss some of the best.
So true! No auto tune back then.
So few musicians, that's one of the major problems.
@@THE-MAD-TECHIE Agreed! The music my son, 19, listens to is crap. No meaning or messages in any of it! I will say him and his friends have been listening to a lot of the old R&B/Motown artists and they love it, so maybe there’s hope for him after all?!
@@SchreeSR I got lucky and my 20-year old listens to King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, and many other great bands.
Fabulous ☺ ♥. I think he's even better live than in the studio. An incredible performance. Loved it.
His concet vibrated my entire body for days!!!
Mine too!!!❤😂😂😂😂
no matter how many times I watch this live performance - always get chill bumps!!! The GOAT of drummers!!!!!!!
NO!!! He doesn't lip synch. When you experience him live it is "POWERFUL". Especiallly this song you will feel it vibrate through your soul.
Real artists dont have to lip sync? They don't needed recorded music either. They play and sing! The younger generation never really seen this before. Todays crap doesnt hold a candle to yesterdays artist/music. And I dont like when they take someone elses music and try to make it their own.
@@terrythomas790 100% agree with you.
"Against all odds" is another one of Phil Collins great ones.
He certainly knows how to put on a show. I love this video from start to finish.
I only read the comments to make sure someone called out this song. ❤
Collins was a BEAST on the drums!!! One of my favorite videos of all time
Against All Odds is another classic Phil Collins song.
Phil started out as drummer in the band..they lost their lead singer and asked Phil to fill in...rest is history!!!! Awesome!!!!!!
Peter Gabriel quit and a legend was born.
Artists back then sounded almost exactly like the recording when they were live.
The live version is AMAZING and shows you how talented Phil is, not only is he a great singer but he is an amazing drummer.
He did the entire music for the Disney movie Tarzan it was beautiful
And 'Brother Bear'.....
He went so hard for us on that Tarzan soundtrack.
The sound track is the only reason I watch Tarzan
My kids grew up watching the French version of Tarzan, and Phil Collins did the songs in French! I was so impressed! Usually my kids would lose interest during the songs in Disney movies because they would be in English and they didn’t understand the lyrics.
Some artists had no excuse for not singing the songs for the French versions (looking at you, Celine Dion)
Iconic iconic for the rest if time thank you Phil for your voice and your music 🎵❤
I'm 54 years old and I *never* knew that she was a drummer! Thank you! :)

Don Henley ain't bad
Sheila E and Don Henley too
Genesis was one of the greatest prog rock bands ever.
Yes! If only they could hear Supper's Ready. Do you think they are ready for it? 😉
