As soon as Chad said, "Oh, it's in 3." It was all over. He was locked in.
what's "it's in 3" mean? i'm sorry, i'm not a drummer
@@Andre-yd7jc Just a reference to the timing.
@@Andre-yd7jc it’s the time signature so this song is in 3/4 so each bar has 3 beats in it (you can count it 1,2,3,1,2,3…) whereas most songs tend to be in 4/4 (1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4…)
@@Andre-yd7jcin this song, you can literally say out loud “1 2 3” and the beat will repeat
Lmao. So true, bro went Thanos on this track. "Clicks".
Chad's been drumming since he was 7 and it truly shows. That drum kit is merely an extension of him. we are beyond fortunate to have lived as the same time him.
some kind emo things ❤😂 LOVEIT❤
I moved down to London for university when I was 21 and had been dabbling in guitar for two or three years and thought I had a bit of talent, had some scales down, knew some nice riffs and licks and whatnot, but once I started mixing with musicians, both casual and people studying music at the university, and going regularly to a live music pub (Grey Horse, Kingston) I realised just how far ahead other people were.
There were musicians who already had 15 years on me, Like, they started as soon as they lost interest in crayons and jumping in puddles. I was self-taught too, and there must've been so many people who were taught by proper teachers, or musician parents, and did all their grades and whatnot. And so many were multi-instrumentalists too, and had the confidence to sing. I remember one bloke took my acoustic guitar off me and fine tuned it by singing the intervals. Like, wtf? Imagine having that confidence in your inner intervals, if that's what you'd call it.
I have to admit, that depressed me a bit and I reduced my expectations a lot. You can get lucky in music, and have a hit song with a good idea and three chords but these early-starters are on another level. It's like learning language, the earlier you learn it, the more it just becomes a part of you and the easier it is.
Of all the reactions I have watched, this is the best reaction I have seen. A drummer who can break down and get deep into the performance covering all the intricacies that non-drummers may miss. Great reaction.
This! I keep watching drummer reactions too and this is the best so far. Subbed!
Hands down
Absolutely.. it's next level what Chad did with this
I second your comment, as a certified non drummer. I've always loved this song, and have had so much respect for Chad as a drummer, but hearing how hard it would be explained in simple terms made this clip so much more meaningful. I've watched this clip so many times, but having someone explain the technicality of it all, made all the difference.
Absolutely, great watch
FINALLY!!! I have been looking all over UA-cam for someone to do a react to this video who actually understands what they are watching. I have seen videos of people claiming to be drummers, producers, guitarist, and rappers react to this clip and you would think it was their first time ever hearing music. Thank you for giving such a detailed breakdown of what Chad was doing rather than just sit they and go “no way, there is now way he has never this song before!” Or “there is no way anyone could do that” and that’s the extent of your commentary input. You really know your stuff as a drummer and as a musician. Thanks for the great video!
Check out 66samus
There's another dude I saw react to it and had the same insight to Chad's ability of timing and reaction and corrections while keeping timing. I can't find that video anymore though. Edit: Found it, TheThirdErnest
yeeeesssss i agree! someone tells people that with time and experience you learn how things work! great job on the reaction and the comment! thank you both!
Agreed. I'm not a drummer and the last time i played music myself was trumpet in high school...but i was getting annoyed at how many people had such mild reactions to what he was doing. Anyone with a shred of musical ability should be able to see just how incredible this is.
Agree!!
that part at 11:22 is even more impressive when you realize he thought it was going to continue to build and then caught himself at the last second.
I just love that usually, on that series, they let the drummer listen to the entire drumless track before they sit down and actually play to it so they can try and map a few things out beforehand but Chad decided to just skip all that and play to it on the fly 😅 That's why the whole crew looked so excited/ were laughing cause this doesn't normally happen lol
yeah the cut to the booth right as when i was ALSO going "HOLY CRAP" was perfect lol
YES! They're like fuck it!! Gooo!
No it is not "before they sit down". They always listen from the kit as you watch. WTF is wrong with you people always embellishing with nonsense.
@@huitrecouture oh wow I made a tiny mistake about WHERE they get to listen to song before they have to play it 😅 if it's really that important to you then I freely admit that I was wrong about that detail. But I think the point of my comment still stands regardless of where they listen to the song 😉
@@Shadowcat31 the guy u replied to is exactly the type of ‘people’ he was talking about 😂
Such a chadism breaking the stick and just keeping on going, what a legend
I love how drummers are the most synced people ever 🤣 coming from a guitar player, drummers are the most linked in people. The heart of the band 🤘🏽
The first time i watched this and heard him say "oh its in 3" almost instantly, i knew i was in for a ride
As a gigging drummer, it's so refreshing/nice to listen to a drummer go through basically every thought I had watching this haha. From nerding out about the cymbals, setup, to making the same observations I made as far as how he "charted" out the song, to the transition choices he made... there's a lot of reaction channels out there, but it takes something special to make me feel like I'm nerding out with one of my friends, so thank you for that
I think this is my favorite reaction so far. You really caught all the things I wanted others to catch. Also fun to learning new stuff from a drummer. Great job.
Great reaction my guy!! Finally someone who can actually see what Chad was doing on the fly and realize he didn’t hear it already and was adapting as he went. Loved seeing your appreciation for his talent and also his kit. It is a sick set up for sure. Definitely subbed!!
Yeah that part where he was like, “Oh he really is hearing this for the first time.”
Like getting to see a drummer that is experienced enough to tell that Chad wasn’t lying about never having heard this.
I am not a drummer, but I absolutely love and appreciate music. I have watched that Chad video at least 10 times. I agree with the other comments that you seem to be the only one that reacted like we did! Like “woah! Did you see that? Did you hear that! This is amazing!” So, thank you for validating our feelings 😋
Who are you??! This was by far the best breakdown of this video that I have seen. As someone that does not play the drums I could not wrap my brain around what he was doing but the fact that you could point out the areas where he was figuring things out on the fly really helped me appreciate what Will Farrell did in the original video. Thanks for this reaction.
He’s kinda a big deal
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks he looks like Will Farrell lol
@@lisawilliams8180there’s a video from a late night show with Will Farrell and Chad Smith having a drum off…. Lol
@@majorhayze I just saw that recently! So funny.
so glad you didn't end the reaction after he stopped playing 😅 great video and great feedback of your part!
Thank you! 😁
The fact that Chad seamlessly started playing without any practice proves he is the best
This is the best reaction. Seen so many reviews where people think it’s bs he’s never heard it before. The there are small parts you can tell where he’s trying to adjust by what he’s hearing. Great reaction video
Since this vid dropped and people started reacting to it, I've been kinda shocked at how many claim to be drummers reacting. You, sir, are the real deal. Great breakdown. I enjoyed geeking to this with you.
Okay, you completely and totally rock! Can't believe how many reactions I watched of this video and yours was the very best! For the first time you noticed and pointed out the parts that almost every other reactor totally missed. Thank you so much!!
That’s the experience of nearly half a century of ELITE level drumming at play.
Chad just listens to the vocals and adjusts his playing to them, this is his whole secret of reading the entire song so clearly. He does exactly the same thing in RHCP live jams in those moments where he either poorly remembered a fragment in advance or completely missed the rehearsal, and this always helped him out))
You don't know what you're talking about. It's because they ALWAYS jam/improvise and write the music together and MOSTLY because he's played to/around Anthony's rhythmic vocals for decades. PER Chad.
The best part is Jared and Shannon reacted to this cover of Chad too! They both seemed to really approve of this version!
@@SkullLad21 where?????
Pathetic. With Jared hogging the video screaming for all the attention, as usual. What are you even talking about all they did was signal that it was in 3rds for their entire 10 second silent short.
@@marystuart9503 It's a short and not worth watching.
Totally leaves you speechless! I know nothing about drumming and I never heard the song before and I have watched this 20 times. Obsessed
I appreciate somebody's genius, but what I appreciate even more is somebody else's appreciation of somebody's genius.
And I appreciate that you appreciate someone else's appreciation of somebody's genius.
This makes me smile every time I watch it, He made a possible better drum line on the fly, what a legend
you nerding out about the types of Cymbals and specific drums he's using on his kit just is the *Chef's Kiss* best
He pretty much out geeks the rest to oblivion. It was impressive to see a showcase of someone's knowledge of drumming and drum kits.
God tier musicianship... love to see someone who is able to really apreciate it.. Thanks.
It’s great because, unlike others on the channel (not discrediting them at all), he didn’t listen to the entire track before he did this. He listened and figured out what he needed to know in like 30 seconds. It’s astonishingly good, especially knowing he’d never heard the full song before , but even more so when we know he just heard like 20-30 seconds of the track without drums. It’s amazing. You hear when he’s making decisions, but they’re basically the same decisions Shannon makes. Only at the end does he just decide to whatever/have fun.. and even then, it’s so DANG close to the original it’s almost crazy.
I know absolutely nothing about drums but listening to how you analyze, interpret, and explain to your audience is fantastic! I can tell you are genuinely passionate and obviously super intelligent! favorite reaction so far! keep up the great work!
It’s genuinely so soothing and delightful to see someone enthusiastic and joyous about something their passion
This is the best reaction. I caught him doing that roll at 16:25 when i first watched it and that was the part that stuck out the most to me. He immediately heard, replicated and incorporated it perfectly. That's what the other reactions didn't see - he hadn't heard it and didn't need to.
This is the most intellectual review i have reacted to. YOU ARE AMAZING!
By far the best reaction I’ve seen to this! You’ve GOT to react to more in this series! I’m obsessed 😍
I love the fact that you are loving this video, but mostly I appreciate how much you know about drumming. I've seen A LOT of reaction videos from people who either don't know the music and can't comprehend how AWESOME Chad is doing, or they just watch with a dull expression on their faces as Chad works LITERAL MAGIC. Thank you greatly for your insights on the video and your very cool reactions to what an incredible job CS did! You ROCK!
My favorite reaction by far. I can’t believe it took this long to find a good reaction that knows how exactly what happened during the video. Fantastic.
I’m a musician. Not a drummer, but watching him adjust at the last minute and figure it all out is insane! You can literally see his face as he thinks it through.
I honestly watched that video over 50 times… I’m amazed every time!! He’s so so so talented
I love this reaction video! You can tell this guy loves the drums. He knows the type of the cymbals. I love how he pauses the video to look and see what type of cymbals he playing on.
Good stuff! I love that Chad just went for it like 30 seconds in without waiting for a full listen. And was amazing! His intuition was spot-on.
To echo what everyone else has said, thank you so much for your in depth and attentative reaction. Easily the best reaction for this and I’m so thankful for your insight!
Of all the reactions to this video, you are the first to understand that he hadn't heard it before based off of that initial delay around 3:23-ish. Everyone else has said that he had to have heard it before.
The man has been playing drums since he was like 10 or 11 years old. He has like 50 years of experience. 40 of which are professional. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that he would be able to pick it up off the cuff like this like so many people are trying to claim.
You sir have earned my subscription today.
Favorite reaction! Appropriately impressed - several reacted very nonchalantly to what is an unbelievably amazing improv performance. I loved how you stopped and explained in all the right places, caught & expounded on moments that others glossed over, and were suitably in awe throughout.
This is definitely the best reaction to this video. I almost commented at the beginning to say I hate your friend and if you like chad smith then idk why you wouldn't want to watch the rest. Definitely do more drumeo videos, as a non musician, it's interesting to see the different styles and how people process music. It's nice to see somebody actually enjoy a video and be able to give insight on the specific topic. Too many reaction channels are just forced positive reactions to whatever the current clickbait video is.
As a longgggg time fan of the RHCP and Chad Smith, who gets chills every time I watch the original video of this, I was so happy to see the reaction videos that came out after it and yours is one of the best. Thank you so much for doing this! New sub here 🥁
Chad is such a legend. I love how much fun he has!!!!
This was dope! You know your stuff, and I don't so I'm blindly following your explanation but it made sense. Great reaction
6/8 is such a fun time signature to play... All the syncopation possibilities and just the feel is basically cathartic... So refreshing...
I am not a drummer, but when I first seen this video on Drumeo my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe how close Chad was to the original without even listening to the whole song once. It's wild and he's definitely GOAT material.
I just found your channel through this cover and I love what you’ve got to say about the drum specs and musical aspect. I’ve always wanted to play the drums (I went to school for music degree in trumpet ) and recently got into metal. The metal scene has such INSANE drum parts that I wish I could ever play. That level of expression is so incredible to me!
I heard him do this on TikTok yesterday. I have been on UA-cam for 2 hours listening to him play this in either the full vid or people reacting like yourself and I can’t get over how close he was.
30 seconds to mars is such an underrated band, shannons drum tracks are just beautiful. They arent always overly complicated (though they can be, especially live) but they are often so unorthodox and unique that it is just a fun listen. You can tell he has a great feel for rhythm and how to give a song such an interesting drum line
It can't be overstated how crazy talented he is. If I had never heard this song and someone played me his version and said it was the original. I'd have no reason to doubt. Chad Smith RULES!
I love this reaction video bro. I'm a beginner drummer, and i knew this song and saw Chad played it for the first time and i was like blown away. He freaking killed it. Btw a new subscriber here. Love this kind of vids.
I agree with the comments. Best reaction. No one comments on how well he emulates the song by ear. 16:30 is a prime example. It is unreal
I’ve seen probably 15-20 of these reaction videos, and it’s always a treat to watch. It was really cool to see you start highly technical, but as it progressed you got lost in the AMAZING talent of Chad Smith. Fun to watch!
watched close to, if not more than 10 reactions to this video and your reaction video is by far and away the best I've seen.
As per previous comment I’ve seen many reactions from “drummers” not one of them actually said about coming in a bar later etc.
those little things you pointed out makes it so much better
I’ve seen nearly all reaction videos, but yours is definitely 💯 amazing content. You got a new follower!
The man played the groove on "Breaking the Girl"...
He GETS 3/4 timing. 💯😎🤣
Very true!!!
I love hearing your thoughts on this. This video is one of my favorites and got me into this series. It moved me and I’m not a drummer (I am a musician tho.) and I just love watching your commentary as well because it helps me understand the drummer thought process. Thank you for this.
Hi C&C fellow drummer here. This is my first time watching your channel and I have to say you got yourself a follower. I loved your enthusiasm and reaction. This is what I want from reactors excitement and self expression. Can’t wait for more!!!
It was so EPIC and your breakdown of this was Superb! Thank you!!
The person that recommended the video almost did you dirty… “just listen to the song”? Wtf? No. So good that you watched the rest of it.
Also, as many others have commented, it’s great to hear the input of an actual drummer that knows what they’re talking about, as opposed to someone who probably sat at a kit in a music store for a minute and claims that they are a drummer 😂 (there’s one that said he stopped playing drums a few years ago… he looked about 16, a few years ago he wouldn’t have reached the cymbals 😂). It’s good to see a genuine drummer reacting to this video, and Drumeo has quite a few more that are worth a watch too. It’s a great concept - here’s an experienced and probably well known drummer, here’s a kit, here’s a song that isn’t their style or they haven’t ever heard before, let’s get them to play it - brilliant.
One of my favourite things about Chad jumping in without a full play through, he jumps in around the 30 seconds mark of a song by 30 Seconds To Mars… and then proceeds to nail it. It was one of those “meant to be” moments, and it’s there for everyone to see it.
One of the better videos out there, I still regularly come back to it to lighten my mood and just to see the awesomeness that Chad brought while playing
I've seen so many of these videos, & you're the only one that I've seen break it down like you did. I'm musically illiterate, but even I knew this was amazing. Thanks to you, I now know why. 😂 Hands down the best reaction I've seen. Well done.
It’s absolutely awesome seeing someone who’s really good at something, appreciate somebody else being amazing at what they do.
Great reaction! Loved how you broke it down. Just starting my drumming journey and really have enjoyed your content. Subbed up!
I have watched the original and then like 40 reactions to this video and yours is my favorite. That little part you called a “Tom” gets me so hyped every time. Nice.
I’ve watched this a few times and after the 1st time, I went to the original version to compare. Omfg I have tears today. There was so much emotion in Chad’s drumming. Plus the added bonus of not even listening to it in it’s entirety, just shows how much talent and musicality he has running through his veins. This brought me to your channel and you didn’t disappoint. Thank you for this gem.
I keep coming back to this. I can't tell you enough I LOVE hearing "drum nerd" out. Your face says it all. Out of all your videos. This is the best one. I love it when you go "drum nerd". I love the talk about the cymbals. I rewind the part where you are talking about being super drum needing out. It's just so awesome. "More please"
Lol, it's Chad Smith, of course he's going to dive right in, the guys a drum Nerd in the best possible sense.
Found your channel when I watched your reaction to Blinding Lights and you are by far the most relatable reactor I've come across. I played drums for a few years in high school and watching these guys play blows me away. Watching you react the same way I do to the talent these drummers display, and getting excited at the little things you pick up is just so wholesome and entertaining. Keep it up my dude, love the content.
Best reaction on youtube to this! Actually shows that you know drums because you catch stuff Chad does in the video and explain things. Love it. Also like how you nerd out on drum kits etc (I'm a guitarist, but this taught me some stuff about drums too, lol)
This is the best reaction i ever heard about chad smiths the kill cover on a drumless track play through. So detailed
Dude, I've watched a ton of reactions to this epic Chad Smith vid, and finally someone who can see and appreciate how good he is improvising. Great reaction, subscribed.
I just watched you react and loved your reaction to Chad and loved this so much to watch an actual drum nerd react to these type of videos and I truly enjoy how much you geek out over the details
I didn’t want this video to end. Great commentary
this is the perfect example of a reaction video, drumming isn't in my wheelhouse but I loved watching this video. So entertaining and keep up the great work!
Dudes unreal. Seen this a dozen times. And I will see it a dozen more
I have been fan Girling over this for maybe a month and No one irl really cares so I'm aggressively happy I found this video.
I'm more classically trained so I get a good bit of how impressive this is, but you have done amazing explaining how impressive this is from the actual instrument stand point. You got a very impressed new subscriber man
Great reaction man, Chad is truly a beast... I really enjoyed watching him work this out his way.
What I've been seeing in comments on other reaction videos is that most, if not all of the other drummers needed a first listening of the song before formulating how they thought the drumming would go. Chad is a beast.
Its great to see someone who can recall or even know the song enough to know where the blind drumming differs from the established drum parts.
You got a new follower!!! I’ve seen this video so many times. Chad Smith is seriously the goat! 🐐👏🏻😍
Chad is unREAL man !! There is a reason he’s in the “rock n roll hall of fame”
Chad is one of the best drummers. Most people don’t realize how many times Chad just like Danny Carry, do session drumming for a lot of other artist.
30 seconds in, he sounds better than the original drum track ON THE FLY
Your excitement to this video slapped me in the face 😂..I know didly squat about drums but your enthusiasm makes me want to learn drumming lol🥁❤️🤘🏻
THAT ! Is another level of appreciation ! Right there ! Excellent. A pleasure to watch, you nerdy drummer ! 🙂
Chad Smith is so good with his ability to adapt to the changes throughout the song and making it all flow together as if it were the original part. He's insane. You should check out the Sleep Token Drumeo video in a video or even on your own time. If you haven't seen the video or heard the band before, the drummer has some really sick stylistic choices involving how he plays and puts together his parts. Definitely worth the watch.
Love hearing Chad Smith’s style come thru at certain parts, he definitely has his own style 😊
Great reaction! HIGHLY recommend checking out the whole series. The Mr. Brightside one is great, but Greyson Nekrutman playing Sleep Token is phenomenal. Chad set a bar I'm not sure anyone will be able to top here, but even the ones that the drummer doesn't really get all that close to the original are fascinating.
Nic Collins doing Whiplash is pretty underrated imo. A great video for sure.
@@MODatHTDHthey did him dirty w that one tbh
You should check out the video on the Drumeo channel of Chad Smith playing along to Dua Lipas song "Break My Heart". Its an equally impressive playthrough, plus Chad does a little singing and dancing in that video. The guy is a legend.
You should check out him playing to the Dua Lipa song he did session drumming for. Not complicated… just hilarious and he uses the gong behind him finally 😂.
I've subscribed for more Drumeo videos, keep them coming!
He deserves a huge statue in his name.❤ honestly .
Drummer Larnell Lewis did the same thing with Drumeo for Enter Sandman and it is equally impressive - would love to see you react!
Larnell Lewis's Enter Sandman is impressive, but he didn't have a drumless track.
He had a listen to the full track as Lars plays it, and then had a crack at replicating it.
Or any of Lewis' legendary Snarky Pupple We Like It Here session with not even a day to learn the music.
@@djmini_aus did he? I thought the full track was for the viewers, not for him
@@JFFerdyshenko Nah, the format was different. It was more about having a Jazz drummer play a metal track after just one listen.

@@djmini_aus Yeah, Larnell would have done an even better job with a drumless track. Dude learned all the songs for the Snarky Puppy recording on his flight to Europe when he joined the band.
From all reactions I have seen, yours is the best! Amazing! Love it!
Chad's love for the art really shows, it's downright infectious
SOMEONE THAT HAS A HIGH DRUM IQ and can actually see him fixing minnor misses and fills on the fly and not just calling it BULLSHIT
One of the most impressive things I noticed is going back to listen to it again after hearing him listen too it and hearing how close he really was. He really did nail it. The little hat roll was actually already in his first attempt, slow opening of the hat with the build, pretty much everything but more cymbal and tom instead of snare from the start. Fantastic.
