Young man................. I'm just shakin' my ol' head over the fact that YOU are into the ol' school, new school Blues. I can go to my grave knowin' the Blues is gonna go on & on through young men like you keepin' it up front & personal. Thank you.
What's so cool is that there's still great blues guitarists in 2023. I saw Eric Gales in Raleigh a few years ago. It was a great show. He's a really cool, interesting and caring person too. I learned my blues guitar from Mike Bloomfield back in the late 60's while in college. I still have the Les Paul I bought in '69.
They carry the torch handed in the 60s and 70s by the late Albert King, BB King, Freddie King, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Paul Kossoff, Mike Bloomfield, Gary Moore, Alvin Lee, Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, Roy Buchanan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Peter Green, Pete Haycock, Danny Kirwan, Rod Price, Kim Simmonds, Jeff Healey, and the ones who are still among us, Robin Trower, Mick Taylor, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Buddy Whittington, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Ry Cooder, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Walter Trout, Jim McCarthy, and many more.
Some serious talent there. Kingfish and Marcus King stood out the most to me and then that guitar duel between Eric and Joe at the end is next level. Great vid.

As someone who grew up listening to classic rock/metal, I’ve become such a Gary Clark jr. Fan boy since I started learning guitar and getting into blues music. Him, SRV, and ZZ top.
You spot on it bro, I saw Robin Trower when I was 16(1976) being the only Black guy in the Civic Arena, Pittsburgh PA didn't phase me. I'm a guitar fiend and don't even play guitar. I play drums and bass.
Loved. your list - can't argue with any of your choices. I've been loving Schofield, Smith, and Gales for quite a few years now and yet most music lovers have never heard of them. And so glad you included Robben Ford. If you haven't heard it, listen to him paying tribute to Paul Butterfield Blues Band, especially "Got a MInd to Give Up Living" and "Work Song". Keep doing what you're doing Devon. I'd love to see more videos like this. You'll never get everyone to agree with you, as it's one man's opinion.
Loved your video. Loved your list. But I would make one revision: SLASH - Orgy of the Damned. I've heard a lot of great Blues guitar, but I just sat there, frozen, with my jaw hanging, like an idiot, staring at the computer monitor the first time I heard it.
A nice appraisal. I agree with your reply to someone else...favourite is very much mood-dependant, so many great players to choose from. My current favourites are Eric Gales and Josh Smith live (together or individually), and I mentioned in a reply on another of your vids, Greg Koch (who deserves much more recognition imho). These three players can always surprise me (I like rock and some other genres too, so mixing styles seamlessly really appeals to me). Joe Bonamassa has a lot of variety in his catalogue too, what with his own stuff, Black Country Communion rock, and the soulful side with Beth Hart. I'm really enjoying the variety in your approach to this channel, good stuff! How far into rock do you think you'll go? (I'll stay with you even if you keep it mostly blues, which is mostly what I play when I pick up a guitar).
Your list is right on..I wouldn't do anything to change it other than to add to it. Maybe top 50? If you haven't done it yet, look up Robbin Ford playing with Miles Davis. I think you'll dig it.
Gales is awesome! I’ll check out Damon Fowler. I don’t think I’ve heard of him. And I’ll check out your music! I’m a blues guitarist and singer/songwriter. Great vid!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎵🎵🎵🎵
Great list man! Check out Ray Beadle from Australia. He needs a place on this list. Top 5 alive in my little down under opinion. I can't sit still either when i listen to all these cats. Like electricity running through me.
Great as they are, they're all obvious choices. Plenty of other 'unsung' blues guitarists around today who are also helping to keep the genre alive and kicking too!
Good list! A couple of additions in my opinion might be Albert Cummings, Tab Benoit, Larry McCray, and my personal favorite slide player, Sonny Landreth. A few women to check out aside from Samantha Fish. Ana Popovic, Anni Piper, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Sadie Johnson, and Erja Lyytinen. All are worthy guitar players.
You are correct with your list, but you forgot a few Such as Johnny Lang, Stevie Ray Vaughn, B.B. King and Kenny Wayne Sheperd. All of these folks are phenomenal on their own.
Sure, there are some really technically great blues guitarists out there, right now. But I still like to listen to early blues. They all seemed to have their own style. They were singing about their own lives. They were making it up all along. So much blues/rock today sounds like something I've already heard.
Gary Clark Jr. knows how to find ways to make his own style of blues. I like how he takes relatively simple bends and patterns but finds different ways to use them. It creates his unique sound. He stands out with the structure and soul of his playing.
Gary Clark Jr., seems to have the best feel of them all. Marcus King, he's got it going on. Derek Truks is a master. Eric Gales tops the list by far man. Couple other guys I've watched who have good chops are William Cann, Philip Sayce, and Audley Freed.
I'm new in to the blues but I always liked it if that makes since the guy I'm really into right now Kenny Wayne Shepherd thought on him and any other guys I should listen to I like Gary Clark Jr thanks for putting him up there so I could look him up
Bro, good list, but don’t forget the great Eric Clapton, legend of legends is still among the living. No doubt many of the players on your list would agree! 😊
Love this list. But I think even though he’s known more for his pop music, John Mayer deserves a spot in here. When he wants to go full blues mode, he’s absolutely fantastic
true, I got to see him in concert with Eric Gales a few years back at the Caverns @ Pelham TN. Rocking good time it was and they ended the night on stage together to throw down on some Catfish Blues
That little lick that Eric does right at 17:05 is incredible. I’ve never heard anything quite like it. I’ll have to look again, I don’t think he touched the pick-up selector. But somehow with his attack he gets this crazy tone on that. 🤘🏻🎸

I like your list, but for me Derek Trucks is the best today.. His skill and tone is 2nd to none.. Gales and Bonamassa are bad ass players, but to me their playing is too fast for the most part.. Albert King told SRV once that there is a lot of good guitar players out there but they play fast and don't play with soul, and I tend to agree.. But you do have some great players on your list..
I wouldnt argue the point with Derek, depending on my mood, I suppose I'd have him as the best blues player. But I've also seen joe & gales play with ridiculous soul as well. So that's why I have em at the top.
Totally agree. Derek is the best living guitar player out there right now and not just his slide playing. He is also a band leader who conducts and arranges performances by the best live band in the land these days. Have a soft spot for Eric Gales cause he's a lefty. Joe B just doesn't excite me as much as many others do......as I type this I am listening to and watching Jimi play live, Red House after Hear My Train A Comin (Royal Albert Hall February 1969).
