It is so great to have lived when Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, etc were in their prime.
Im 42, but 60-70's music is my thing, blues my backbone, all those bands are great; Purple, Zeppelin and Who most of them. I love sabbath also, but never been big fan of Stones or Beatles.

The musicians in Deep Purple were probably the best of the UK’s heavy rock generation. John Lord on keyboards, Ian Paice on drums, Richie Blackmore on lead guitar, Roger Glover on bass & Ian Gillian with the vocals.
All exceptional on their instruments, and they knew how to play together well besides.

Answering your question here, reason for the audience being silent during this song is that Deep Purple were invited guests for live televised show. People, who oversee the show informed audience to be quiet during the show. But their live concerts are awesome when they do their tours, fans go wild.
Yes indeed, saw them 6 times, 4 with Ritchie in the 70s, and we were standing for almost the entire show, every time, they did not let up!
Deep Purple was way ahead of its time at that particular moment. You really can't blame the audience! :)

My first live concert was Deep Purple at Hammersmith Odeon in 1974. It is so nice to see new generations discover music that I grew up with. This is recognized as their best lineup. Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on organ, Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums.
Heh.. When you commented on how velvety the lead singers voice is, just before the changeup. All I could think was "buckle up, Sweetie" 😂

This is one of the all timer live recordings. Vocalist Ian Gillan, who also played the part of Jesus in the original Jesus Christ Superstar album, drummer Ian Paice, organist John Lord, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and bassist Roger Glover, they were all amazing on this.
Also, no effects, no autotunes. Just pure musicianship.
Deep Purple was the greatest collection of talent in rock. All amazing musicians and vocalist.

Deep Purple Made In Japan 1973, a double live album, considered by many to be one of the best live albums ever recorded! This song & several songs from the Machine Head studio album, are on Made In Japan!

This band had so many great songs. Their biggest song was Smoke On The Water, which was based on their actual experiences. Also: Lazy, Highway Star, Space Truckin, Hush, and many more.

Deep Purple are all amazing musicians. Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord (rip) on keyboards, Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums.
Deep Purple was once the loudest band in the world, and one of the best rock and roll groups of course. You need to hear their lessor known songs, which really show their musicianship!!! Like "Fools", "Rat Bat Blue", and more.

I can assure you the crowd is not bored. This was a recording for a TV show, and the audience was requested to keep quiet and not interfere with the recording. This happened a lot in the late 60s and early 70s in England so as to achieve the very best sonic results. Also, it's quite possible those people had never been subjected to this kind of FIRE back in 1970, so they were shocked into a comatose state. Who knows, right? 😅

The guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wasn't happy with the direction they were going and wanted a change, and a frontman like Jim Morrison of the Doors. When they found Gillan, he said him and Glover were a package deal. Not only because of their writing, they had only 1 pair of good pants between them.
Welcome to the Deep Purple rabbit hole. They had so many hits and so much good music. They were groundbreaking, and like you say all four of them were fantastic, and they just fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
An extreme example of all of those elements and I promise will blow you away, is their hit Highway Star from their iconic Machine Head album.

Four dudes on fire. Crowd told to stay quiet because it was being recorded. You see this a lot in this era - in part due to limitations of recording techniques, also in general UK audiences (in particular) were much more reserved at this time - particularly in sit down concerts - and finally this was a TV studio audience so not necessarily die-hard rock fans. People would buy tickets just to be on TV.

I never danced to Deep Purple cause I was always too stoned. Not one of my favorite bands though I did in fact owned their first album.
The guitarist went on to form Rainbow. Their Stargazer with Ronnie James Dio on vocals, who would later take over for Ozzy in Sabbath, is crazy good....
Dio's best with Stargazer and Heaven and Hell. She would love those tunes!

This was not the original lineup, but the second one. Just so we're clear.
Deep Purple was originally formed in 1968 as a British pop rock band after the dissolution of the previous band Roundabout... All the members were professional musicians and the first line-up (Mark I) was: Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), John Lord (organ/ keyboards), Ian Paice (drums), Nick Simper (bass) and Rod Evans (vocals)... They released 3 albums and had some success in America w/ hit cover songs like - 'Hush' ... 'Kentucky woman' ... 'Lalena'.
The band wanted to change musical direction in late 1969, so Evans and Simper were fired and the iconic Deep Purple (Mark II) line-up was born w/ Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) joining from the band Episode 6... w/ Blackmore (guitar), Lord (keyboards) and Paice (drums)... They were the first rock band in '69 to record a 'Concerto' album w/ a classical orchestra... but after hearing the music of Led Zeppelin... Jimi Hendrix... guitarist Ritchie Blackmore suggested that they go for a 'heavy rock' sound in 1970.
Deep Purple released their first 'heavy' single 'Black night' in 1970 followed by the album 'In Rock'... they became a hit in the UK, but America still knew them as the hitmakers that played 'Hush'... Deep Purple built a reputation as an unpredictable and exciting live band on tour as they released the albums 'Fireball' (1971) and 'Machine Head' (1972)... but it was the '72 live album 'Made in Japan' that broke Deep Purple huge worldwide and is regarded as one of the greatest live records (The band said the tapes were recorded on their Japan tour and had no overdubs - only some minor audio cleanups)
However, the tensions between singer Ian Gillan and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was becoming intolerable by 1973 after the album 'Who do we think we are' ... Ian Gillan quit Deep Purple in '73... Ritchie Blackmore agreed to stay only if bassist Roger Glover was out of Deep Purple (Ironically, Blackmore hired Roger Glover in 1979 as the bassist/ producer for his band Rainbow)
In 1974, Deep Purple launched their new line-up (Mark III) w/ Glenn Hughes (bass + vocals) and David Coverdale (vocals) joining Blackmore (guitar), Lord (keyboards) and Paice (drums)... They released the 'Burn' album and became even more successful than the previous line-up selling out arenas and stadiums by that point... But this time, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was frustrated by the sound of the band... After another successful album 'Stormbringer' in '74... Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple in 1975 to form his own band Rainbow.
Tommy Bolin (guitar) was an American guitarist who joined Purple (Mark IV) in '75 for the album 'Come taste the band'... but fans were not interested in a Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore... After a difficult tour marred by drug abuse and death, Deep Purple broke up in 1976.
Guitarist Tommy Bolin died in late 1976 from an apparent OD.
David Coverdale would find success w/ his band Whitesnake in the 80's... Glenn Hughes struggled w/ addiction for years, but recovered and has been actively recording and touring as a solo artist and has a successful project Black Country Communion.
Former members of Deep Purple stayed active in various bands after the band ended in '76... but the Mark II line-up of Deep Purple finally reunited in 1984 (Gillan/ Blackmore/ Lord/ Glover/ Paice) for the album 'Perfect strangers'... and launched a comeback tour. However, conflicts re-emerged between Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore after the 1987 album 'House of Blue Light'... Ian Gillan was fired in 1989 and Deep Purple released 1 album 'Slaves and Masters' in 1990 w/ former Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner.
For their 25th anniversary in 1993, the other members of Deep Purple wanted Ian Gillan back on vocals... Ritchie Blackmore was not happy w/ the decision or the next album 'The Battle rages on' in '93... Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple for the final time that year.
After a tour w/ guitarist Joe Satriani... Deep Purple hired former Kansas member Steve Morse (guitar) in 1994 and ushered their most stable era, recording the albums 'Purpendicular' (1996) and 'Abandon' (1998) and actively touring and rebuilding their career.
Keyboardist Jon Lord amicably left Deep Purple in 2002 to focus of classical music projects... Jon Lord passed away in 2012 from cancer.
Former Rainbow member Don Airey (keyboards/ organ) joined Deep Purple in 2003... the band released the albums 'Bananas' (2003) and 'Rapture of the deep' (2005) ... and remained a successful touring band. After Jon Lord passed away, Deep Purple released the album 'Now what?!' in 2013 followed by 'Infinite' (2017) and saw record sales rise once again.
Deep Purple planned to close out their legendary career and finished yet another album 'Whoosh' in 2020 and a covers album 'Turning to crime' in 2022... Longtime guitarist Steve Morse announced that he was leaving Deep Purple and was replaced by Simon McBride (guitar) as the band returned to touring and r reportedly planning another record.
Fun fact, the Singer Ian Gillan was the original Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar."
He wasn't in the theatre production, but sang the role of Jesus in the original Andrew Lloyd Webber album version of the rock opera. But yeah, dude's amazing
The result was wonderful. I heard half of the first side of the first LP. I bought the original Broadway recording of J.C. Superstar (yes in vinyl) on the way home.
I was in 10th grade. It was played for us in a literature class that was taught by an genuine hippy out of southern Calf.
He didn't last a year as the way to conservative school board jumped at the first complaint and got rid of him.
He taught the class to think about what they were reading and listening to. If all you did was memorize fact then you didn't do well on the exams. A few "Strait A Students" did not do well. I think the complaints came from their parents.
And that recording with him as Jesus is the best.

I am a 60 year old American who spent 3 years in Bad Kreuznach when I was a very young kid (5-7 yrs old). My older sister went to some big festival on an island in a river (the Rhine, I presume) in either '70 or '71 and saw these dudes and a couple of other contemporaries.

This was a live TV performance from my local TV station Granada TV here in the NW of England, from a series called "Doing Their Thing". Yes everyone always zones in on the audience, but you have to remember technology back then wasn't as sophisticated as it is today, there's a brief shot of one of the cameras, and it's huge, no wonder Ian Gillan reacted as he did when it was shoved up his nose, so the studio audience would have been under strict instruction to sit like church mice, so as not to detract from the performance. I seem to remember that this was broadcast live as well, though I could be wrong, making it doubly important to cut out any extraneous noise. As you say, the musicianship is off the scale, Ian Paice, the drummer is very underrated compared to his peers like John Bonham, ditto Nick Mason from Pink Floyd, but both are very influential within drumming circles. You'll probably come across Ritchie Blackmore, the guitarist, further into your journey. He left this band to form "Rainbow" who, no doubt, you'll be reacting to at some stage. Just for completeness, the late Jon Lord, RIP, is the keyboard player and Roger Glover is on bass. They had many personnel changes over the years, but this is generally thought of as the definitive lineup.

VTR machines were in use quite widely in the black and white days. Their replacement was part of the cost of switching to colour. Corrie (also Granada of course) was taped and edited, although for this show, recorded as live was probably the normal procedure. The surprise is that this has survived at all. Almost certainly a fan in the VTR department secreted it away, the norm was for tape to be reused.
The EMI 2001 colour cameras were actually smaller than some of the B&W cameras, the pedestals they ran on were the same. As for the audience, Ready Steady Go and TOTP had cameras in the audience; but this local show would not have had the budget to pay four or five stage crew per camera to handle the cable and guide the cameraman. There's also every chance the kids had no idea who would be on; they are all dressed up, and quite young, and Deep Purple were a fairly obscure college band compared with the big names.
Great reaction, Stacey! This was an amazing time in rock and rock. Very nice to see the younger generation enjoy it as i did.
TV was a big thing that time. Radio and tv were the only mass media, where you actually could have music for free. And being in tv, as part of the audience, was also a big thing. The producers of the programs told the audience before, that they should stay quiet before the end of the song to not interfere with the audio recording.Technically very different time, and as you can see, the audience is very diverse, different generations from children onwards, normal people. They actually were impressed by the situation, the music, that was very far from mainstream (hard rock was new and heavy metal was not even born), the audience was respecting what they thought was the right thing to do - listen to the music, take the situation in, looking good and appropriate for the cameras.
And there were no "music videos" - at all. Just TV recordings and some film recordings. And European broadcast had the best of the best in audio and tv production, because it was financed by public money. Incredible financial ressource, up to today.
Many of the best live recordings ever and specifically at this time have been recorded by British, German, Danish and French tv. As you see, the audio still holds up very well until today. You might come across endless "Rockpalast" (German tv show) videos of all times, single songs and whole concerts, that are incredibly well produced. Well, I guess you already had some Wacken videos on your channel, right? Production value of many European tv programs is very high.
At that time, this was still a brand new thing. Color tv. It just became affordable for families to have one, that time.
Yeah. So, I hope this explains the situation a bit. 🙂

Their most iconic guitar riff you can find in their song Smoke on the Water. In 1975 guitar player Ritchie Blackmore leaf DP and founded Rainbow, a band with a lot of top musicians. Listen to their song Stargazer.
And then the follow up/sequel A Light in the Black. Some of the best Cozy Powell (RIP) drumming.

i went to concerts back in the 70s, and you were told to stay in your seats. And as this is a televised performance it would have been even more strict. I went to see Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Genesis back when these groups were just starting out, it was amazing. Glad you liked this performance.

Deep Purple was recognized by The Guinness Book of World Records as the "globe's loudest band" for a concert at the London Rainbow Theatre, during which the sound reached 117 dB and three members in the audience fell unconscious. I hope you will continue your journey of Deep Purple. They have a huge discography to dive into. I’d suggest “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water” live in Japan.

The crowd isn't bored. They're mesmerized, stunned, amazed... and of course, as a filmed session, they were no doubt told to remain seated and calm.
Ian had a musical theatre background, and Purple are still active touring. They're set to release the special anniversary edition of Machine Head, a HOF album in their catalogue that is worth checking out.
Deep Purple has a fairly large list of hits. Lazy, Highway star, Woman from Tokyo, Perfect Stranger, smoke on the water, Burn, Soldier of Fortune, Space trucking, Hush to name a few.
Ian has always been one of my favorite vocalists. You might check out the Rock opera "Jesus Christ Super Star" by Andrew Lloyd Webber, where Ian sang the part of Jesus. It would make a great Easter show for you, and almost no one else has reacted to it ( Ive seen one). There is a video clip of Ian performing "Jesus Christ Superstar - Gethsemane".
These guys should be on your radar for full album reactions. There's a lot of gold to be mined in those deep tracks!!

Another great choice to react to! They are one of the greatest. And they had a few personnel changes over the years. Even TODAY former member Glenn Hughes bass and vocals tours playing Deep Purple music 50 years after he joined the band. Rock On Stacey!
Deep Purple is an exceptional group with elite musicians. Worth a deep dive into this group and groups that spun off these members. One of those being my favorite bands called Rainbow that was formed by the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore after he left Purple. Rainbow was fronted with vocals from Ronnie James Dio, another fantastic vocalist. The song "Stargazer" is a must, but also their live shows, (Live 1977 Munich concert, songs to check out is "Mistreated" (vocally one of the very best) and "Catch the Rainbow".
Apparently they were told to be quiet by the producers as it was on Tv recording and they didnt want distractions

What you need to know is that at that time, and on this track, the band was playing without having any sound monitor, or earphones, they were playing live

Ian Paice (drums) Ritchie Blackmore (guitars) Jon Lord (keyboards) are original members, Shades of Deep Purple was their debut album and it has some great tunes (it was one of the first two albums I bought as a teen). But when they added Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass), that's when they just exploded.
The great voice of big Ian G, one of the best of the era. Velvety indeed!!

Today's generation are so used to lip syncing, autotune and no instruments that a one shot, live performance on a TV show by real musicians is alien to them.

One of the greatest vocal performances ever imo. Imagine singing this on tour night after night for 100 shows. All the British tv show audiences were like this. I was lucky to see this band a few times.
The thing I love about this video is how pitch perfect Ian Gillan is especially with no modern monitors or ear monitors like modern performers have.
The crowd were probably in shock as at the time this would have been one of the heaviest things they would have ever heard let alone probably didn't even know about Deep Purple 💜💜💜 these guys are absolute legends of the rock world.

Oh yeah...the crowd. Everyone says they were told to be quiet for recording purposes. Ok, that's one part. But the lady in blue explains what's really going on. This was a social experiment, in that, they were told they were gonna see a new Christian pop band but what they got was one of the greatest rock performances of all time, by some of the greatest musicians of all time! The lady in blue summarized the experiment perfectly.

Dear Stacy just for perspective Ian Gillan is the one that sung the Musical Jesus christ superstar lead on the Concept album before it became a Musical, he was Andrew Lloyd webber's first choise. unfortunatly he couldn't do the musical due to conflict with Deep Purple concerts :) i had the honor to hear him sing in 1992 and it was a religious experience, all the love from Greece, Stay healthy and safe ps. This lineup is golden, all of them are masters of their respective instruments. If i may suggest i think you will love Kasey Chambers cover of Loose your self the cover she made of the goat Eminem song, its just amazing there are no words :)

This is music history. As a vocalist who is now 78 years old and has been singing blues and rock for as long as I can remember, Ian Gillan still rates as one of the very best vocalists ever in the rock genre.

As the other guy said, but I'll put it in English: Gillan has repeatedly said it was about the Cold War. They were a British band and the (alleged) threat to them was from the Soviet Union, not the Vietnamese. In Gillan's own words: "... we were all aware of the nuclear threat which hovered over us at this time which was probably when the ‘cold war’ was at its hottest ... So, we created this song using the Cold War as the theme, and wrote the lines ‘Sweet child in time, you’ll see the line.’ That’s how the lyrical side came in."
@@psbarrow Just some trivia. Not a threat, but technically Britain was in Vietnam earlier and handed it back to the French, before the French themselves got booted out. All before America stepped in. Some Brits were embedded in the Australian Army which answered the call for help from the U.S.

I am old, almost 70 (even though my neighbors told me I look like a teenager with no car insurance) and this Child In Time song is a masterpiece. This anti-Vietnam War, anti-gun song UNFORTUNATELY, I think denied DEEP PURPLE their place in the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. Because of increasing anger/protests from the other INDUCTEES, the HoF FINALLY inducted Deep Purple on 2016. Better late than never. BTW Stacey, the reason why the crowd were non-reactive during the live performance was because of the studio rules during that time. Stacey, thank you kindly for your beautiful, lovely reaction. OK, I need to close my house windows, rock & roll with some Deep Purple hits. Keep up the good work!!

Ian Paice is one of my favorite drummers (left handed). Ian Gillan (vocals), I believe, was on stage as Joseph, in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, so I guess he had amazing talent before joining Deep Purple in this the classic Mk II lineup. Other lineups followed, but this is the classic one that probably gave rise to the majority of the classics
I was 15 when I bought the In Rock Album in 1970. It blew my mind for sure. Legends at each position for sure.

Deep Purple has been a huge part of my life since 1973. I was lucky enough to see them live at least twice. Deep Purple is part of my all time favourite bands with YES and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I also was lucky enough to see ELP twice and YES at least 8 times over the decades.

One of the best songs in the history of Rock. And it shows off Ian Gillan's amazing range incredibly well. The musicianship of Purple is unparalleled. Without question one of the best bands ever. And they are still putting our original stuff to this day!

It is kind of sad to me that music has fallen so far. It will never reach the plateau that it was on from the lat 60s to the late 80s. There are a few real musicians now but not many.

Deep Purple headlined the first concert I ever attended backed by the original version of Fleetwood Mac and Rory Gallagher. Fifty two years ago and I still remember it like yesterday. An amazing collection of musicians. So many great albums.

Oh Deep Purple, the absolute amazing legendary band! It is underrated in my opinion. There are so many good songs that seem to be forgotten. Flight of the Rat, Into the Fire, Fireball, Demon's Eye, Pictures of Home, Women from Tokyo, Rat but Blue, Burn, Mistreated, Stormbringer, Hold On, Lady Double Dealer, High Ball Shooter, Soldier of Fortune, Gettin Tighter, Knocking at Your Back Door, Nobody's Home and Wasted Sunsets are just some of the songs which I feel deserve WAY more recognition. I was born in the golden era of music 1960 and today i am a happy young man on my 64 yrs old.
And the only good band we have now is POETS OF THE FALL because they are still playing today.
This was the iconic 'Mark II' line-up of Deep Purple (They came after the original 'Mark I' line-up from 1968/ '69) that made music history from 1969 to 1973... The line-up reunited in 1984 to 1989 and then one last time in 1993... The members were: Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (organ/ keyboards), Roger Glover (bass) and Ian Paice (drums)
Deep Purple came together as professional musicians in 1968 in London... that was why they were so tight live. This line-up had been together only a few months before this performance was filmed in 1970, even though Deep Purple had been a band since 1968.
Deep Purple was incredible unpredictable live in concert and even though this TV performance was quiet, Deep Purple's concerts in the 70's tended to get quite chaotic w/ venues getting their seats destroyed by their fans... 😈
When Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) left to form his band Rainbow in 1975, they had a similar reputation from 1976 to 1978 when Ronnie James Dio was the singer - venues would get damage from Rainbow concerts.
😄 Welcome to the powerhouse known as Deep Purple. Their studio albums were full of incredible ideas and virtuoso creativity, but it's their live performances that just put them on a whole other level. Fantastic live band and there's great stuff to experience. Checkout the California Jam 1974 concert which has Purple as the lead act. Song called Burn is pure high energy Rock and Roll !!!
