Those briggs and stratton classic engines are a delight to work on, so simple in design. Had a feeling it was the gasket due to the hunting noise. I always run mine dry after I'm finished for the year right about now, keeps the gasket and diaphragm gumming up from all the ethanol they put in fuel these days. Great tip about primer bulb and tightening gasket by the way....

OK you have handles sticking up everywhere.in the garden. Starting up a mower under the laundry. Yikes!!!! I have had more trouble with diaphragms this year than any other. It almost looks like the owner tried a few things (spring) before he brought it back to you. A tiny flutter with the old plug. I think he got the mower wet.

Watch a workshop trick I've noticed on some mowes that go in for a service. They remove the fuel filter, you then end up a year or two later paying for a dismantle and carb clean.
Obviously not Mick! But some unscrupulous shops are doing this.

With the amount of years I've been doing small engines, in the begining if a mower came back, I would doubt myself, my work, but for as many years as I have been doing this, that stopped a long time ago, it is always operator error, either bad gas, or it has sat to long without use, if it left running top, and comes back 6 months later, it is always operator..... Owner error, never doubt yourself.... If it left your shop running tops, and comes back 6 months later it's never your fault.

@@themowerman oh I agree, but after awhile it gets to you, if he uses it professionally it automatically voids any warranty it may of had...... You have to know where to draw the line, I had a guy who used it pro, returned it, or tried to saying the blade came off and almost cut his foot off, it turned out it fell off his trailer and got run over by a truck, and guess what the blade was still attached, you have to feel it out, trust who deserves it.

Thanks Mick. I think I'm sorted. The cable had come loose from the pull cord cover. It was mounted just behind the petrol cap. It had been pushing the carb mechanism forward. The air filter was also clogged up with oil and gunge. I cleaned it up re oiled it and it's running fine now.
I see in your video you said to leave the throttle cable off. Does that apply to all mowers? Mine is a Harry body with 35 Classic engine.

Someone bought it, didn't use it, you bought it, fixed it, sold it, now it sat unused, you fix it again, it sits unused again and needs attention...yet again. The bloke then gives it to you in said future, you service it again, sell it again, and maybe, just maybe someone will use it. Or maybe it'll go full circle, again.
