As I repair these myself for a living I have came across a few of these easy fixes.I got a mower one time from a lady and turns out it was nothing more then a sheared flywheel key. I contacted her and returned it back to her free of charge. I now have another customer that is glad she has found someone that is honest.
I believe you could drop by and offer it back to her, and yes, it does make a difference, there's a lot of women out there that don't know what to do about equipment maintenance, no need to take advantage of them. You're a good man 👍
I am a bit late but putting a sticker of his business on it would be a good idea as well. I can't believe it was that new and she got rid of it though after such a short time.
This is late but i want to give my 2 cents. She didn't have the brains to bring it to him to get fixed in the first place. Give it to a person in need of one but doesn't have the means to buy one right now. This guy is going to get a lot of business because of his honesty whether he returns it to her or not. At the very least Steve deserves a car of beer for the work.
Honestly what I would do personally really depends on the circumstances. If I was flat broke and seriously needed a lawnmower I might keep it. If I had another lawnmower and I picked that one up with the intent of fixing it and selling it, I would probably offer to give it back no charge. Or maybe if I planned to put $20 worth of parts in it then I'd ask for $20 for gas money, time, and labor. Again depending on how bad I needed the money at that time.
Steve, I have a feeling in my heart that you are going to return it to her, tell her what happened. (She might have already bought a lawn mower too) but do it anyway. You have no idea....the important people that are watching you in your daily routine, that shape and form your character. Remember, the things we DO in life to others, will speak in our defense or conviction in eternity.
I have been watching you for some time. I rescue, revive, and or restore small engine equipment. Between you and Mustie-1, you guys have taken me out of the bankruptcy of working on automobiles to small engines which is a total joy and inexpensive. I have donated and maintained small engines for those on fixed incomes, and still offer them service, sometimes as cost to me; but I love seeing mowers like this last for decades and giving advice to their owners how to keep them from rotting away or being thrown out again. I would see if she wants it back and, if she is able, charge her a small fee for this fix; which is better than having her pay for another mower. If she doesn't want it back anymore, donate or sell it to someone who needs it. Great video sir. I am in good company here, in both the work, love, and humility/ humanity, and honesty.
Agreed, Steve and Mustie are two of the best. Common sense, direct approaches with real, useful, instructive commentary and good camera work so you can see what they're doing.
By asking the questions of yourself that you did , knowing I would be asking my self those same questions and what I would do, tells me the type of person I think you are, which is the real reason I enjoy watching your channel, so I already know what you are going to do, no matter what we say. God's blessings on you and yours RWY
Steve, as an educator of the public not only giving the mower back is a generous gesture. Telling her in person is continuing your education of the public
As a senior citizen (and a woman) who is going through this with my present mower (which is also my son's), I would have given anything to have a man like you to return the mower, and let me know what was wrong. To be honest, I was working full time (just retired at 75), and didn't have time in my life to sit down and troubleshoot, other than read the manual. All the shops were booked out for most of the summer, but they still said, "Just bring it in, we'll take care of it." Now that I'm retired, I have a little extra time. I just changed the spark plug and air filter, but when I tried to start the engine, it blew out smoke, and died. I put that blue gas treatment in the gas that sat through the winter, so I figured it had to be the plug or the filter. After your video, I'm thinking the helpful mechanic who put in oil may have put in too much, so I will check it. The thing is, I used this mower before I had someone who offered to look at it. I know it's a simple 2 cylinder, and I know it's a simple fix. I just never learned how to do it my self. Thank you for even thinking about it, but the choice is up to you.
The no. 1 thing that improved all of my lawnmowers 100%. I followed my mechanic's advice and filled them all with ethanol-free gas! They run like hotrods now!
Thanks for this video. I like it when you say "I feel bad about how easy this was to fix should I take it back,"? Yes please take back and teach her some few tricks so she won't lose loads of her property.
I went to start my 12.5 HP B&S-powered mower, and it began smoking. A LOT worse than what you just showed. I turned the key off came to my computer and, within a minute, I saw your video. I watched it, drained about six ounces of oil from the engine, and mowed my lawn. Thank you, Steve.
Great video. I would change the oil and air filter.clean the spark plug for peace of mind and return the mower to the lady if she is in need of a mower
I watched Steve last night when he had a lawnmower that had a problem starting, which was the problem I was having with my craftsman lawnmower. I learned something new to me anyway, which was starting fluid. I never knew where to spray it but after I watched his informative video, I sprayed it in the carburetor and it started right up.!!! Thank you Steve you are awesome !
I was having trouble with my lawnmower smoke was coming out of the little silver part! Thankfully came accross the video and did exactly what you did and it worked!! Yeah! So happy! I know absolutely nothing about lawnmower but expected to work every time i needed, thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video. I overfilled my oil and the exact thing happened to me. I was freaking out and then found this video and now my lawn mower is working again!
You Sir saved me a bunch of money and stress. I had flooded my mower with too much oil and had all the same symptoms. Soon as I poured access out and had the correct amount all is good now. Thanks for your video.
@@bernicewade9796 It depends on the make and model of your mower. My Craftsman does not have a drain on the bottom so I actually had to tip my mower on its side and drain actually from the fill valve. I used an old metal paint tray, some rags and always make sure to tip mower away from the carb. Put a plastic baggy over the gas tank to prevent gas from leaking out.
I had the same issue with a coworker who gave me two lawnmowers that wouldn’t run. I fixed both of them for under $15. I felt a bit guilty so I offered to give them back. She declined saying that it was her fault. She appreciated my honesty and now I have a customer for life.
I completely agree. It took so little time to figure it out. It really didn’t cost you much of anything other than the gas to go pick it up. If anything you could ask her to give you a $10 bill for your gas if you felt like you needed something for it otherwise Heck who doesn’t love doing something great for somebody and making somebody’s day… You would save her from having to buy another machine and she won’t feel like she lost out on the money that she spent on this mower less than a year ago. I would encourage you to do, what your heart tells you to do, hopefully that is that ladies day, and setting a good example for anyone who just watched this video. Thanks for sharing!
Yes take it back. It will come back to you. Sounds like she needs to learn something. If she doesn't want it then you can sell it. Keep the video's coming and thanks man.
Original owner is watching this and saying ( I never had a lawn to start with. I over filled it on purpose to get rid of mosquitoes ) Now you turned it into a useless lawn mower lol.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Just wondering what you ended up doing with this mower Steve ! Could you pin a comment to this video. I need closure, this was a discussion among my family and we all have different opinions.
Thank you so much for this video. I started up my push mower and it was smoking and it hadn't before. I was about to call my know-it-all brother in law when I decided to check UA-cam first. Your video was the first one that popped up. After watching it, I drained the excess oil out of my mower. No more smoke! Thanks again!
I don't think you ever needed for us to tell you what to do and I am sure that you already took the mower back to the lady. You seem like a really decent guy and I know you did the right thing. The lady simply didn't know how to properly maintain the machine. I also think you probably have a new life long customer. I really liked you before but I like you so much more now. I work on OPE and vehicles all the time and I know I would not be able to face myself in the mirror if I didn't take her mower back to her. You're a great man Sir.
First time ever changing the oil in a mower, wasn't sure where the Full line was and just kept pouring...thus, an awesome smoke show! Thank you so much for this perfect how-to video!
I just freaking did this too. First time ever changing oil as well. I pretty much knew what was up when I saw the oil splatter on the exhaust, but I was scared it was going to be a pain to fix.
I'm later seeing this and don't know what you did with the mower, return or keep it, but I would have taken it back to her, told her no charge if she wants it back. I'd also have several business cards I my pocket and either way, she would get a few of my cards. You might lose a few bucks for not keeping it, but an honest repair person will get much more business from her and anyone who hears what you did. You can't buy that type of advertisement. Having watched you freely give us your knowledge on so many things, I am sure you did the right thing. Thanks for your channel!
First time changing the oil in my lawn mower I overfilled it, I checked this page before running it and realized my mistake! I would've had that problem, thanks for the help!
the right thing to do? he was given a lawn mower for free and fixxed it, yes this was an easy fix but alot of them arent easy fixes and alot of them arent free, now if he likes the lady its great to bring it back im sure she'll send him some customers probably more revenue than the lawn mower would of sold for but calling it the right thing to do insinuates its the wrong thing to keep or sell it.. which it isnt but its great that he brought it back to a single lady who didnt know enough to check the oil, it was afterall not a cheap machine ariens are quality units
@@AndrewBrowner kinda funny because Peter didn't even say a thing about what he thought to be "the right thing to do" of the two options presented and yet you immediately identified one of the two as "the right thing" even if the whole lot of the text was spent on explaining how it is not necessarily. So who are you trying to convince that both options are cool? Yourself? :D
I could probably guarantee that she would never forget your kindness. I just did the same thing to my mower, inadvertently, so I watched your youtube channel, and you just saved my butt. I'm on disability and have no one I can ask for help or advice and I have a large yard and a very old mower, so thank you so very much for your advice. There aren't a lot of honest people out there, but now I know of one more!
change the oil, install a new filter, bring it back then return to your shop and pop the top of the beer that you forgot to sip because you were soooooo excited!!!! the second time running the mower you checked the time on your watch. you don't own a watch. hahaha - too funny! you already know what you are going to do. your heart is already telling you what to do!
It's a "Class" thing Steve.. Right is Right.. Take it to her house... Let her know it was just too full and if she wants's it back, it's her's again. If she has a new mower already.. Your conciseness is clear. Your still a Grade A small engine tech.
I've returned such machines myself, water or paraffin in the carb etc. your honesty can often get you more work, so yes, it does pay to be truthful, in the long run.
To me someone who gives away something with a minor problem that doesn’t even look at it doesn’t know the value of things. I’d sell it to someone else cheap
Hey Steve. I also had a mower that was left out by the kerb. I took it home and started it up. It smoked but NOT as badly as the one in your video. It was an old Briggs side valve engine. In the end it didnt need rings it just needed fresh oil. The owner said he`d had it for years and he assumed the rings were worn down and I was welcome to take it. Serviced it and sold it as a good second hand unit.
Steve, I always try to do the right thing. I'd at least make an attempt to get it back to the owner. If they already have one, you can do what you want with the mower. You never know someone else's situation. Maybe they can't afford a new one? I've been in the same situation. I acquired a mower that only needed a gentle laying of hands. No costs involved other than 30 min of time. I asked around as I didn't need another mower.. Found a friend of a friend that was just starting out in their new (to them) home and really needed a mower. They were a young couple starting out and barely had 2 nickles to rub together. The genuine show of appreciation and gratitude were more then work the 30 min.. Call it paying it forward or God points or what ever you want.. Me? I put it under the classification of being a good guy.
Thank you so much I have a small tecumses motor and I over filled the oil and blew a ton of Whig smoke. I drained it a bit but it’s still over the full line but I’m sure if I drain it more it will have more power and stop shooting flames!!
I just bought one that's smoking. You think his was over full. Mine was all the way up on the stick ! Smoking like crazy ! If I had to guess they used car oil . Weird thing is .I bought it from a lady. Not that it matters ;)
Same thing happened to me a while back. Was a pretty new mower looked nice and clean and no wear on the tires at all. This was before internet , well it was on the curb in the garbage I asked the people can I have it and he said yeah it just doesn’t run it was a cheaper one not self Propelled . Took it home took the carb off flushed it blew it out and it ran excellent. I went back and told them that I fixed it liked 40 minutes later and said it cost nothing . They said no it’s okay we already got another one but thank you. End of story. So I felt the same as you do on this old video. I’m a new subscriber as of today . Good stuff presented in a fun way.
This is exactly what you need to do. Do what cotton says. Put the offer back to her and if she doesn’t need or want it then you donate it to a needy household. God will repay you
This the thing to do. Dont do it with the idea of anything in return. Do it willingly. You seem to be a genuine dude so i know it would be done out of genuine kindness👍👍👍
You're a good man. Just by having the thought of even contacting the lady and letting her know that her lawn mower had a very easy fix. I would do that. 9 times out of ten she would say just keep it. nice and neat video. Thank you for sharing it.
Excellent! Thanks to your video, I was able to fix my riding mower in a couple of minutes.😃 I was afraid my old rider had finally bit the dust. Thanks to you, it's back to running perfect with no smoke. Thank you very much for posting this.
Your own words: "I'm just trying to do the right thing here". You answered your own question. Take it back to her and tell her if she needs anything else fixed for her to call you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Hi Steve, just wondered if you brought the mower back to the lady?. ......I had a similar situation recently with a local woman who asked me to take away her mower that wasn’t running well and was very smoky. I brought the mower back to her as it had just been overfilled with oil. She was delighted and I have a new customer now.😊
Anyone ever hear a follow up? My guess is, since Steve's heart was contemplating it in the first place, he contacted her. Probably the best approach is to ask first, rather than automatically assume she wants it back. I had a customer give me a $350 snowblower that was used one time, then sat for several years. I couldn't get it to start, but took it home anyway (offering to trade work for it, but she declined). I got it home and fixed it for $10 (missing bushing wouldn't allow electric start to engage) Called her and said it was fixed and I would be happy to return it no charge. She said she didn't want it, didn't want anything for it, and was happy to give it to me. Yup, ended well for everyone.
First I want to tell you I learned how to fix my lawnmower. It has the same problem aus that one you used to show the problem. That's very nice of you. Cntact the lady, explain the problem of the lawnmower to the lady, if she don't wanted it back, you can sale it. Thank you.
I don’t have this problem, but I watched this whole video because not only did you know what you were talking about, your also entertaining! Keep it up man.
You're a good guy, take it back, tell her you do small engine repairs and tune-ups and she will likely call you for any repairs and recommend you to her friends.
Hey mate you fixed my problem! I was having MASSIVE clouds of smoke but turns out it was super over-full with oil. Thanks heaps. Where do I send the cheque?? 😉

I believe you could drop by and offer it back to her, and yes, it does make a difference, there's a lot of women out there that don't know what to do about equipment maintenance, no need to take advantage of them.
You're a good man 👍
I bet if you take it back to her, she will be a loyal customer for life.
and word of mouth is worth way more than $200, put your contact details on it for business.
I am a bit late but putting a sticker of his business on it would be a good idea as well. I can't believe it was that new and she got rid of it though after such a short time.
Nope she will overfilled it with oil again
Well said!
Very nice .
😂
Take it back. You're a good man, Steve.
You’re the man! Give it if she needs it. Love your channel brother.
Do you know how to make these mowers sound quieter ?
@@evladi7654 Just switch off the engine... :o)
You obviously already know what the right thing to do is. Take it back and thank God for your blessings!
By asking the questions of yourself that you did , knowing I would be asking my self those same questions and what I would do, tells me the type of person I think you are, which is the real reason I enjoy watching your channel, so I already know what you are going to do, no matter what we say. God's blessings on you and yours RWY
yeah she's kind of like a two stroke with the smoke thing going on this is why you don't over fill an engine on oil
New filter an take it back. Buckin would be happy to hear. Merry Christmas to all.
The no. 1 thing that improved all of my lawnmowers 100%. I followed my mechanic's advice and filled them all with ethanol-free gas! They run like hotrods now!
That is exactly what I was thinking, Steve give it back😀
Thanks for this video.
You're Welcome...
You're Welcome...
How kind and thoughtful, Steve. I don't know what you decided to do, but I am sure it was the right thing.
Bring it back to her with a large red ribbon tied to it and say: Merry Christmas!

Maybe she'll give you a case of beer as a "Thank You" for your compassion!
I was having trouble with my lawnmower smoke was coming out of the little silver part! Thankfully came accross the video and did exactly what you did and it worked!! Yeah! So happy! I know absolutely nothing about lawnmower but expected to work every time i needed, thank you so much!
How did u drain the oil out ???
You’re a kind man for sharing this information. Extend your kindness by contacting the person and returning the mower. ❤
Thank you so much for this video. I overfilled my oil and the exact thing happened to me. I was freaking out and then found this video and now my lawn mower is working again!
You are so welcome!
You should take it back
To her. Good things will go a long way, I promise you that.
Your a good person 😉 you'll do the rite thing with the lady's mower😸
If it was me I would bring it back. That would not make me happy if I kept it inside use your best judgement do what you feel thank you for asking us
That's his question! What IS the right thing to do?
@@vincentrobinette1507 return it. That's how we all we raised. Carma does come back✔️
Yes, I would notify her & ask her if she would want it back. You are a very honest person.
You Sir saved me a bunch of money and stress. I had flooded my mower with too much oil and had all the same symptoms. Soon as I poured access out and had the correct amount all is good now. Thanks for your video.
You're Welcome...
Can you tell me how you went about emptying the oil out please?
I'm having the same problem with my mower.
Thanks
@@bernicewade9796 It depends on the make and model of your mower. My Craftsman does not have a drain on the bottom so I actually had to tip my mower on its side and drain actually from the fill valve. I used an old metal paint tray, some rags and always make sure to tip mower away from the carb. Put a plastic baggy over the gas tank to prevent gas from leaking out.
Take it back to her , I'm sure she will appreciate it and you'll feel better
Take it back and it will be on market place "Lawnmower perfect working condition $50"
Looks like he got in in the spring/summer... See the green leaves? It's winter now in Canada lol
Great job return it to the lady.... God will take of you🙂
Original owner is watching this and saying ( I never had a lawn to start with. I over filled it on purpose to get rid of mosquitoes ) Now you turned it into a useless lawn mower lol.
LOL!
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Why, Why, Why would you even try it will all that extra oil in it, seems kind of stupid.

You're Welcome...
Glad to help
Your awesome! I am sure she was grateful!
You know what to do....Merry Christmas!!!
First time changing the oil in my lawn mower I overfilled it, I checked this page before running it and realized my mistake! I would've had that problem, thanks for the help!
Glad to help!
You already know what the right thing is to do Steve and I'm sure you've already done it
the right thing to do? he was given a lawn mower for free and fixxed it, yes this was an easy fix but alot of them arent easy fixes and alot of them arent free, now if he likes the lady its great to bring it back im sure she'll send him some customers probably more revenue than the lawn mower would of sold for but calling it the right thing to do insinuates its the wrong thing to keep or sell it.. which it isnt but its great that he brought it back to a single lady who didnt know enough to check the oil, it was afterall not a cheap machine ariens are quality units

Yeah, make the attempt to return it. You have no idea how that gesture will bless her and you. Way to go Steve.
change the oil, install a new filter, bring it back then return to your shop and pop the top of the beer that you forgot to sip because you were soooooo excited!!!! the second time running the mower you checked the time on your watch. you don't own a watch. hahaha - too funny!
you already know what you are going to do. your heart is already telling you what to do!
I would give it back as a Christmas gift and show her how and when to add oil 👍
She buys him a beer of his choice and she has to figure out which one of several hundred that one is!!!
Thanks Steve much appreciated!
I learned a long time ago: If you're ethical enough to ask the question, you already know the answer. Do the right thing.
It's a "Class" thing Steve.. Right is Right.. Take it to her house... Let her know it was just too full and if she wants's it back, it's her's again. If she has a new mower already.. Your conciseness is clear. Your still a Grade A small engine tech.
I concur
This is what I would've done
I've returned such machines myself, water or paraffin in the carb etc. your honesty can often get you more work, so yes, it does pay to be truthful, in the long run.
To me someone who gives away something with a minor problem that doesn’t even look at it doesn’t know the value of things. I’d sell it to someone else cheap
I just bought a mower yesterday and it’s doing the same thank you for this video I’ll be checking the oil filter and carburetor
Its christmas Steve take it back, i know you will because you are a good man!

Good and honest goes a long way
Definitely try to return it, that could be a huge blessing in someones life.
You are kind . Today I filled up my pushing lawn mower with too much oil. Thankfully, I found u on u tube & am now a subscriber.
Thank you for the sub!
Thank you so much I have a small tecumses motor and I over filled the oil and blew a ton of Whig smoke. I drained it a bit but it’s still over the full line but I’m sure if I drain it more it will have more power and stop shooting flames!!
The joy in this man gets from a smoking lawnmower makes me feel like my life is a failure.
I just bought one that's smoking. You think his was over full. Mine was all the way up on the stick ! Smoking like crazy ! If I had to guess they used car oil . Weird thing is .I bought it from a lady. Not that it matters ;)
Take it back and say merry Christmas
Offer it back to her, if she doesn’t want it give it away to someone who is a little down on their luck
This is exactly what you need to do. Do what cotton says. Put the offer back to her and if she doesn’t need or want it then you donate it to a needy household. God will repay you

Charge her for fixing it if she wants it back. your time and knowledge and honesty has value
Bring it to the lady. This blessing is for you both.
Be the sweetest person and offer it back to her, she will always tell people about the good thing that happened to her
Take it back Steven let her know who you are hi Steven I was going to remind you about your beer thumbs up
