    ik nail biting is more common, but nail picking is soo difficult to quit! every time i’m bored or anxious it’s the first thing i start doing. my longest was like a week but it was so difficult! i kept reminding myself that i wanted long beautiful nails but it was so difficult

      Appreciate you for sharing your experience! Do you still pick your nails? I pick my nails too. I realised that I do it whenever I’m bored, anxious or scared of something. I’ve been doing it nonstop, like every single night till they bleed, for at least two years now. It’s the hardest thing ever to stop. It’s almost impossible. But I’m trying my best. The longest I can go is two-three days. But the struggle is real. I want to get my nails done but I can’t so that’s not an option. Do you have any suggestions?

      @theeyeschico_ it's actually still a problem, but I have reduced the habit. It happend naturally, but now I don't pick my nails as much as I pick my cheek! So I have switched habits 😭😭

      I have hangnails and sometimes pick them. I try to use just a nail cutter to just cut it away. Sometimes I just rip it. It just annoys me being there, that is the hangnail. I won't use lotion cream because I don't like it. Don't like the feel. That isn't really an option.

    im 19 years old, and have been biting the skin around my fingers for as long as i can remember, and it has only gotten worse and worse. I have been biting the side and tops of all my fingers to the point where i constantly have deep wounds around my nails. It has always felt super embarrassing for me, and i have been hiding my finger tips as much as possible for many years now. My family and friends (only the ones who have noticed it, or the ones i have showed it to) have been telling me to stop for a long time now, but i have not been able to do so. It's so bad, that the skin around all my fingertips is super thick and red.
    A little while ago i tried putting band-aids on the tips of the fingers that were the worst at the time, and it kind of helped, because it made me not be able to feel the skin around those fingers. But because of this video, i have tried putting hand creme on my hands and fingers, and that has really helped, because it makes my hands feel super soft, and nice, which makes me stop biting. I try to put the hand creme on as soon as i think about it, and especially after taking a shower, or before going to bed, and in the morning. Thank you for making this video, this has really helped!:)

    I do it even when they’re moisturized. To the point where every finger starts bleeding and red and sore and I pick at them while they’re healing so they almost never heal. It only happens when I take my ADHD medicine (vyvanse) or if I am studying/ doing homework. I’m assuming it’s from anxiety but I don’t know. I’m going to try to moisturize as soon as I notice that I’m picking at them now and hopefully that will help!

    My problem is I forget to put oil or lotion on my cuticles. I don’t think about them until I see the white, dry flakiness and, of course, I’m somewhere where I don’t have a cuticle nipper or oil handy. I need to be more mindful about being prepared-and consistent.

    • @annettepasternakSSPC
      @annettepasternakSSPC  3 роки тому +3

      Maybe set some reminders on your phone or putting the oil in a strange place like on your keyboard to help you remember. Preparation and consistency are a challenge but the key.

    I always chewed my nails, I got the habit from my mother. At the age of 9 she told me I wouldn't be able to become a hairdresser (my then dream vocation) with nails like mine. I stopped, just like that - one day a nail biter, the next day not.
    Some years later, and I can't even pin point exactly when, I'm approaching 40 now and it could be a decade or more I've been at it, I've become a skin puller.
    I hate it, it hurts, looks gross, is a gross habit. I'm a pretty handsy person, so my hands can get pretty dry. But even when they're not, I'm looking for a rough patch to work on.
    Snipping these off to create a straight edge does help, when I'm not too anxious, but if I'm having a rough time I can't stop myself. It feels like an addiction.
    I can go weeks and be almost healed and really pleased with the result, only to start looking for a rough patch again.
    Some of my fingers now have these weird bumps around the nail bed, where the skin isn't growing back smooth anymore.
    I can't stand wearing the gloves to bed, but I do keep hand creams everywhere around my house so that if I'm tempted when I'm not busy around the house, I can massage creams into my finger tips instead to try and keep my hands busy.
    I keep pebbles around too, something small, flat and smooth, from the beach, to use as a kind of fidget toy when I'm out and about. Keep my hands busy.
    I've only just realised that what I'm doing can be considered a form of self harm, I'm genuinely shocked to know this. I remember some scenes from the Black Swan movie, thinking goodness that's awful, only to be doing it myself (though obviously not quite as graphic as the movie!)

    • @annettepasternakSSPC
      @annettepasternakSSPC  Місяць тому +1

      Hi. Thanks for sharing your experience. These behaviors are like an addiction and are different from self harm because you are not intentionally trying to hurt or cause pain. Your behavior is satisfying in the moment giving you an escape from anxiety or other difficult emotions or sensations.

    @AnneMelb2010 Місяць тому

    Thanks for all the tips. I have been picking skin around my cuticle area and top of the fingers for decades. I have also watched other videos that say this picking has the same effect as people who cut themselves as it is a compulsive thing and relieves pent up anxiety and stress.
    I wish there was an easy way to deal with OCD behaviors, but I keep trying. lol
    I will try the gamer fingertip gloves as they sound breathable. I had previously tried latex version, but they made my skin sweat and wrinkle making it more tempting to pick later. Thanks again. ✨

    • @annettepasternakSSPC
      @annettepasternakSSPC  Місяць тому

      You're welcome, Anne. It's important to remember the picking is not relieving your anxiety and stress. It's only giving you a temporary satisfaction that provides an escape from those uncomfortable feelings. Overall it increases anxiety.

    I have ADHD, when I pick at my proximal nail fold it is looking to find a rougher bit to rub against my lips. It is a form of self soothing as well as stimming, I find myself doing this without being fully aware of it. This has been something I've done since I was about age 6 - currently 40 so it's been in the picture for multiple decades.....

    • @PawprintStudios28
      @PawprintStudios28 Місяць тому

      I haven't gotten diagnosed, but I do exhibit an increasing amount of ADHD symptoms. I would like to get diagnosed before adulthood. Anywho, reading your comment made me realize a reason why I might pick my skin...
      When I pick my skin down to that roughness, I just rub and rub my fingers against each other and my thumb against my hand. I'm not set on this being the reason, but it's a small possibility. Thank you for opening my eyes to this.

    I think it’s about curing it mentally, not making it harder to ruin the skin, it’ll just cause another coping mechanism. Or another part of the body

    • @annettepasternakSSPC
      @annettepasternakSSPC  Рік тому +1

      That doesn't usually happen with finger picking. Covering fingers is training your brain out of the behavior, not just making it harder to ruin the skin.

    I had a very hard addiction of nail biting and now I finally free from it and so proud. I started getting off it like a month ago and now my nails are kinda long and they look so beautiful, I don't want to bite it anymore. And I didn't use any method or anything I just tried to distract myself from it and when I caught myself on doing that i simply did other things that took my attention. Also when I started it I was really motivated because I want to get my nails done and simply just let it grow. Yet I'm struggling with skin biting still. But trying to get off that addiction too!

    I used to be a nail bitter but since like 6 years ago I stopped doing it. Something that helped me was painting my nails with nail polish. Whenever I had them painted and tried to eat them I’d be grossed out 😂 so that’s a great thing. But some years afterwards until today I started biting the skin around my cuticles. I think the behavior that triggers this is boredom or anxiety. I’m trying to find a way to stop this because I don’t like the way my fingers are starting to look, it also bleeds and hurts. I’ll follow your tips and try to work my way out before it gets worse. Thank you for this useful info, I’ll subscribe to your channel ❤

    Throw away the cotton gloves. Use nitrile gloves, it accelerates the healing and draws moisture from your body into the skin in addition to the moisturiser's effect. You can also wear them during the day without inhibiting dexterity. Great skin and nails in a few days. You must still continue regular daily moisturising when not using the gloves.
