It'a easier to stay out than get out - this is actually so true! Once you're in, it's just nearly impossible stop until you're done with all spots to pick. Thank you Annette for the video, I'll use some of the tips for sure

You can stop with some self-talk (prepared in advance) but that's a topic for another video!

Yea, sometimes I “reward” myself and say I’m only gonna scratch one of the scabs today but end up doing the whole head rippp

Thank you! As a male kid I always had a lushious head of hair. Until I fell into the habit of picking at scabs. I started to thin on the sides and on areas I scartched the most, and the more hair I lose the more stressed I become. I really want to stop, it's not easy. I think if I master this area of my behaviour I can slowly have more control over my life in general. Wish me luck everyone, and god bless

Thank you so much! I suffer from seborrheic dermatitis and I've been scalp-picking since high school and it has become a stress relief though I'm so ashamed of it and it's doing more harm than good for my skin.

I have been picking my scalp for many years, the only thing that has worked for me is false nails. Due to their thickness, you don't have the ability to feel the scab. Good idea to allow the scalp to heal 👍

I'm a 64 year old man, perhqps you'd be interested in my own story. . In February of 2020 I experienced an enormous emotional trauma...easily the worst of my life. A few months later I began obsessively picking my forehead and scalp. I have full male pattern baldness, so there's plenty of real estate to pick. By summer of that year my appearance was so bad I began wearing a hat to hide the damage. Two years later and I'm still at it. My head will be covered with fresh wounds and I would mostly stop picking while everything begins healing. Once they're at the scabbed stage the desire to pick returns full force and the cycle begins all over. I'm in my latest healing stage but the urge to reinjure is overpowering. Just thought you'd be interested in this personal prospective. I don't drink or take any conscious altering substances.

I stopped scalp picking a while ago and my biggest advice is go to a hairdresser and get your dream haircut, It felt wrong to me to scalp pick after that

Thank you so much for this! I'm struggling so badly with this and have been for 10ish years! Keeping my hair in french braids helps me some. My hair is very long/thick but scalp is torn to bits.

I keep a fidget cube in my hands to help from scalp picking. Resisting the urge as I type this.

Hi. I had been scalp picking for 2 years now and I noticed my hair suddenly becoming thinner (I had thick curly hair). Is it possible for my hair to become thick again if I stop this habit? I am 32 y old.

Wow this was so so helpful! I tend to twist and pull the hair around my ears and it’s starting to get bald spots :( I’ve been doing it for years but has gotten worse recently. I def think having the squishy ball or a fidget toy in both hands while watching tv would help me significantly.

I compulsively pick at my scalp which can create cuts and overall makes my head very sensitive and uncomfortable, I don’t even notice I’m doing it most of the time and if I don’t i feel.. wrong? Like I just feel uncomfortable and unnatural and eventually I start doing it again

Yes, we have to definitely have to build up our "muscle" of being able to be uncomfortable. You can do it.

For the past 4 to 5 yrs I have gotten my nails done with a gel overlay to make them thicker so it was harder to pick. I pick my scalp and around my nails. I had to give the nails a rest because my nail bed had gotten too weak and now the habit is right back as if I never stopped. Ugh I also noticed while I am in stressful situations like trying to get 45 kids to behave and listen it gets worse. It's very hard to get away from that stress I have no idea what to do in this situation. Also I have found excessive picking that results in a wound for a long time can lead to a carcinoma and that is really scaring me. I'm I a lost cause?

You're not a lost cause. If you go to my website stopskinpickingcoach.com and sign up for the Freedom Kit (it's free) you'll learn a calming exercise you can do even while you're getting 45 kids to behave. Or another one I teach in this video you can do WITH the kids and it will get them to calm down and listen: ua-cam.com/video/g4tKN_xEIc0/v-deo.html You can definitely make this better. Look on my website to find out how I help people just like you. I even have coaching groups starting soon. This will be a learning process, but when you make the effort you will be ok!

i think these tips would be really helpful for me if i could do something about the itching. i have some sensory issues and actually resorted to hair pulling instead of picking just to stop my head from scratching. are there any shampoos or treatments that stop the itchiness? its my last barrier

    • @annettepasternakSSPC
      @annettepasternakSSPC  2 роки тому

It depends on why your head is itching. But if you google "shampoos for itchy skin" a lot of products come up! Also ice and deep breathing exercises can reduce itching too. One of my clients says yogurt on her scalp helps. Good luck and please come back and share when you find what works for you!

@@annettepasternakSSPC thankyou so much! I'll see if the yoghurt thing works it seems interesting.
