Pro tip: use a wire clothes hanger to "hook" the shift cable through the eye with the bushing already lined up on the hanger. That way you don't have to deal with the frustration of dropping the bushing into the console and having it disappear on you. Once the bushing is installed, you can just pull the hanger out and voila! Thanks so much for this SUPER HELPFUL video, man. I called my mechanic and they wanted $325 for the repair because the Nissan dealer told them they had to replace the entire shift cable. This was just what the doctor ordered. Thanks so much!
I know this was years ago LOL, but I'm glad I saw your comment. I fed a wire thru mine, and it's a lifesaver. That bushing doesn't want to pop in easily, and I could have seen mine falling down into the abyss. TY
Thank you so much for this video! I don't know much about vehicles or repair at all and was able to replace the broken bushing myself just by watching your video. I went to Amazon and entered the product # shown on the bag that yours came in and was able to get the part the next morning. Cost was $9. Thanks again so much for your detailed and very helpful video! (2007 Nissan Xterra)
Very helpful advice, I thought my transmission went out when it was not changing gears. My mechanic was going to charge me $300 to fix it. It cost me a whole $15 dollars for a simple shift cable bushing replacement. Thanks again.
This just happened to my 05 xterra yesterday. I was thinking my whole transmission might have gone bad and I was looking at several thousand dollars to repair. However, after watching this vid, I guarantee this is the problem. So much better than I feared yesterday. Thank you so much for this video, it was very well done. I will be watching it again later when I take my stuff apart and confirm that the grommet is indeed the problem. I can't thank you enough.
I was stuck in a parking lot and you just helped me get home. Thanks for helping me diagnose the issue. I was able to hold the shifter against that post manually in order to shift it in the drive and drive home without taking the center console completely apart, I had to take the flashing under the shifter and shift it up and sideways in order to get access to that post in order to hold it in place while shifting
This just happened to my wife, got the xterra home watched your video, ordered the part and fixed it the next day. Thanks for your video. Almost ordered a shift cable. Thanks again.
thank you for making this video. i managed to fix my exterra without having to take it to a shop. this showed me step by step and my dad was even impressed
Thank You for the tutorial. Saved me several hundred dollars. Overall cost for repair, $14.04 from Advanced Auto ! Only had to use a few of the words you can't say only Public Service TV !😂 Thanks again.
I'm usually not very good at following instructions but you explained it perfectly. Thank you so much. You saved me a lot of money I don't have. You are awesome!!!
What a legend! Thank you soo much! 05 Xterra here, pulled into the garage and it didn’t shift into park. Fiddled with it to realize the cable came undone. Google watch found this video! Ordered the part, will be here on Wednesday.
Woo hoo!! This video saved me from being stuck. Although I couldn’t get the part at any regular auto parts store, we were able to use your safety wire trick to get the Xterra home while we wait for the part to arrive. Also saved $$$ by fixing this ourselves. 😊
Thanks for the excellent video, criminal though that they get $28 for a $2 piece of plastic! Also shame on Nissan for having such a critical part prone to failure.
Thanks, this was so helpful! Had this exact issue on my 06. Followed the instructions, grabbed the bushing off Amazon, and had it fixed the next day. Many, many thanks for the clear walkthrough!!
Thank you sir!!! Just finished took like 45 minutes. That grommet was harder than I thought to get in there. Had to get some plyers and loosen it up a bit. Thanks again for the video!
Thanks for the detailed video.. I just did it a bit differently. I only removed the cup holder, center console frame and the gear handle and cover. After that I released the gear and pulled it all the way down with the cable attached. Then I managed to pull the cable up and insert the bushing (which was the hardest part). Thanks alot again.
As everyone says, it made the repair do-able for "regular" folks who get PO'd that Nissan will only replace the entire cable. My fingers aren't as strong as you youngsters, so I couldn't get the bushing to go in. So I dropped in hot water for a couple of minutes, relubed it, and after eating some spinnach to give me PopEye type strength to my finger, it seated. SO think about hot water to make the bushing more pliable.
You are absolutely my hero. At the gas station after gassing up the car would not shift. I quickly assumed it was the shift cable. Your video popped up first. I could pry the right side enough to get it hooked back on and drive home. With you video I pulled the console, ordered the part and temporarily wire tied it in place. Finding those screws would have been tough with your video. Thank you again.
Thank you for this mine failed in neutral position in the drive thru last night had to get out and push it out of the line but was able to get it home after watching this video
Smoking video. To the point and right. Got my wife home from being stuck in cvs parking lot. Guess who the hero is tonite...THIS GUY. With your help of coarse cheers
I did this video because my son was stranded at work in our xterra, I drove an hour to help him fix it, I figured this was bound to happen to lots of people with aging xterras. Thanks for the props, Larry
Thank you so much for this! Mine went out this weekend. Your video saved me! I just finished installing the part following your instructions, though with a liberal amount of cursing 😆
I had the hardest time with this. I wanted to comment in case another person had stuck a hard time. My hands are cut up, I stabbed myself with the screwdriver multiple times, I lost the bushing 3 times. This was the hardest thing I've done and I've replaced Cam sensors. So, using a coat hanger to hold the bushing on the cable is good, but it got in my way more than anything and when I finally got it on, it was without the hanger. Stretch it out with pliers really good and dunk that bad boy in lube . Then it worked perfectly. Good luck!
good vid. have same problem with nissan maxima 2001. but it never came unhooked. the symptoms were a no-start like when a range sensor goes bad or needs adjustment. it been like that for 4 years. if it happened in P I would have to move it to N and back to P or start in N and it started. as a workaround
Thank you so much just happened to me was eatting in a parking lot and when I was ready to go, it would not move stayed in neutral, just ordered the part, for now just shifting it with my finger on the cable to get it moving very easy and scary feeling glad it was something simple tho😌
Thanks! I didn't have to watch the whole video and I repaired it with plastic tubing. I cut a small piece slipped over metal and the shift cable moves freely and thic enough to keep it from slipping off. I expect for it to last forever hehe. Different car, same shit. Js because this doesn't happen in the friendliest place.
What about the other end of the cable? What happens if there’s nothing wrong with that end of the cable but there still a problem with that same problem
You are a Blessing! My 17 yo watched this video; and replaced the grommet himself! What kind of lube did you use? He’s having trouble getting the grommet onto the post. TIA ☺️
I believe this what happened to my 20132 Xterra today-the gear shifter looks exactly like the video-but the car won’t start either-should the car start after fixing the bushing?
I realized that once the car was turned off it was still in park, which made it impossible to start. Long story short-I ordered the little orange piece from Amazon, took apart the section and fixed it! So stoked! Thank you for this amazing video!
I heard a ping when my shifter stopped shifting. How do I know if it's the shifter end or the transmission end that has failed? The transmission is new.
@@DownsizingMakesCents Yes. Kinda afraid of voiding the warranty but since the garage that put the transmission in refuses to tow it when I'll actually be home (I work 5am til 5pm weekdays) and a tow elsewhere costs the same as I make in a day I'm stuffed whether I pay for a tow or take a day off for the garage to do the towing. I will have to take a look myself. I don't know what the ping was. I do know that I need my car. Worst case scenario I end up replacing the grommet with a Harbor Freight grommet.
Well, I had a look. Took me most of the afternoon to get in there and the grommet was nowhere to be found. I did find some of the Harbor Freight grommets seem to fit though.
Christian is 100% correct. This O’Reilly’s part #14055 bushing DOES fit 2007 Xterra. There’s a white sleeve and a clear bushing. Exactly as Christian stated the clear bushing fits! O’Reillys says it does not fit. For $14 I’m back in business. Thanks 1 million DIY guy AND Christian! I cannot imagine how much time you spent detailing everything which is priceless DIY Guy!
Yeap today was u this video helpful. Until I buy the rubber grommet. Plus I watched one of these videos before and didn't know why. But I watched it and glad I was able to fix it temporary where I was and now I just will take it easy shifting (automatic) until I get the piece😭👍🤣
Thanks for the video really helpful I also found bushing at O'Reilly's for under $12 bucks it's parts # 14055 if it helps anybody. 2 different ones come in package but is the clear one.
No it won’t mess up your car, just be careful disassembling the parts around the shifter consol, keep the screws organized, remember where everything goes and you should be able to reassemble back to normal very easily. Larry
NEED HELP: after I did this fix, everything worked fine. But, I cant shift into 1st gear manually anymore. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I can't thank you enough for being so thorough. Truck is moving again and I avoided tow fees and shop repair prices. You're the BEST. 🖤

Bro this whole video was helpful, I really wanna thank you for helping me get my car back on the road. Your awesome
I’m glad it helped, comments like yours is why I make videos. Larry

Tks for the awesome post, my bushing went at 110K, after watching ur post took on the job myself....
Don’t work on cars too much this helped me today. And saved me a ton of money thanks for the video!
Great video ! Saved my bacon and a lot of money ! Main troubleshooting point was matching gear dash indicator to the floor shifter . Thanks again
How did you fix that problem?
Thanks for the detailed video.. I just did it a bit differently. I only removed the cup holder, center console frame and the gear handle and cover. After that I released the gear and pulled it all the way down with the cable attached. Then I managed to pull the cable up and insert the bushing (which was the hardest part).

My 2011 Xterra just had this issue. This video was perfect! We were able to fix it so I could get it back in Drive and get home. Thank you!
Thanks you sir for such a detailed video. It saved so much money for me. Mechanic said almost $500 for it. But it was so simple easy fix. 😊

Thanks man, got stuck in a target parking lot. Had to use a 9mm shell casing to hold it on until I got home
Thank God , I found this video may he bless you 10 x ,
Thanks for the video. It just happened on my 05 frontier and I was able to fix it myself.
This one only lasted me about 7 years and recently needed to change it again on 06 Nissan frontier
Any idea what the issue would be if my car shifts into gear and I can see it on the dash but the trans isn’t engaging

Thanks so much! Worked great on my 2005 Xterra.
Fantastic video. Save me lots of $$$, thank you brother.
what about the 2007 versa? My is having the same problem.
many nissans have the same issue, they use the similar grommets on the cables
What about the other end of the cable? What happens if there’s nothing wrong with that end of the cable but there still a problem with that same problem
Thanks man! You just saved me hundreds 😁
Thanks for the video it was exactly what I need

How can I fix my xterra 07 which doesn't display 1st shift on the dash? What's wrong?

2007 xterra pulled out in reverse, went to drive but it stayed in neutral, had to push it back in the parking spot I’m assuming this is the problem 😩
