May the Lord protect us all from the curly hair gatekeepers 🙄. To anyone telling people with wavy hair that they have no business styling their hair this way or that way: YOU actually have no business worrying about what other people are doing with their hair. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS! I have curly hair and I find it appalling when a wavy haired person is told stupid things by rude people.
Same here. I'm a wavy girl so I don't bother with the "curly cuts" and my stylist knows exactly how to shape and layer my hair to get the most curl definition when I go to style it. I really do feel like we have it easier sometimes than girls who have 3a and above curly hair. We can get curls when we want them, go straight with little effort, and get inexpensive hair cuts from a regular stylist. I used to wish so hard that my hair was super type 3 curly, but more and more I've come to love my wavy hair. I think watching your channel has definitely helped with that!!
Thank you so much for all your help and guidance on this journey. The tip of the hairspray before diffusing made a noticeable difference to my wave formation and hold. You're a wonderful teacher!
Thanks Courtney! I have been struggling so bad with my slightly wavy hair lately and felt like I was doing all the right things that usually keep it healthy and still it looked so bad. I tried the curl smith bond repair and with just one use I got my hair back! Yay!!!😊
You're not kidding about the Pattern Mask Treatment! Holy shrinkage batman, I just tired it this morning after clarifying and it was AMAZING! My hair is SOO much more bouncy and curly! I also just got the Briogio gel and tried that on top my itself and while I may have put on too much (it felt like my hair sucked up the first amount that I put on) so far I really like it, will be scrunching it out shortly!
I have just used the Ouidad 8:22 water works shampoo followed by lots of conditioner, then rinsed thoroughly and tried the 4U by Tia Curl Defining Gel.. And let it air dry, then diffused a bit. Wow!!! Hardest gel cast ever!! Scrunched/ clapped it out, and oh my! I have never had such awesome curls before! Thank you for all of your advice!
How did you know??? I’ve been hating my hair for like 6+ months and on the verge of going back to heat styling after like 4 years of following curly girl. I’ve done trims and tried protein and masks, but maybe I need a different clarifying shampoo and I definitely need some different gels. You’ve given me hope!
More science, I love learning all the things! I’m honestly considering coloring my hair again after years of not dyeing it. I’m not impressed with the healthy slip 😂 So far the red ouidad hair gel works best for me.
It’s like you read my mind. I have thought about shaving my head. One, to see how my gray hair comes back. And two, to see how my curls would come back. Since going gray my hair is not as wavy/crazy.
Wow… the part about needing a cast because your hair is getting healthy spoke to my soul. I have just been using a curl cream as a styler for a long time now. My hair is feeling so much better and looking shiny… but flat. I’ve done the other things like clarifying, bond repairs and a trim. I was avoiding the gels because my hair felt like straw when I used them… 4-5 months ago. I’ll give one a whirl next wash day. Thanks Courtney!!!
Me too in regards to gels causing my hair to look stringy and or straw hair. Olaplex fixed a whole lot of my damage especially #3 and #8 for moisture. I've never had oily hair in my life which is probably why my hair is so dang dry all the time, but having curly hair does that to your hair anyway which is why I have to keep on forking out for biweekly Olaplex treatments. It's such a huge difference after the first time I used it my hair was shiny and soft and way, way curlier with natural ringlets allover my head. All this time I thought I was 2C with waffle iron (the crimping iron look was my natural look before I started curl journey) curl texture but in actuality my hair was so straw-like that it just couldn't spiral like it's supposed to. Like having a whole new head of hair so I'm grateful to this channel for sending me on my way to healthy hair and other channels. Whoever told me to try Olaplex 3 I owe them big haha! My hair is now 3a/3b and I attribute most to Olaplex although I did switch shampoos and have tried many curl creams and custards. Marc Antony Hydrating curl cream and Kinky Curly custard seem to work best for me but I don't need much.
I got another pixie cut and am working on my healthy hair journey again. (In the process of growing out.) but this video is perfect as I try to figure out different styles!!
I’m going to try and switch things up a bit, since my hair has gotten healthier, something changed and now my usual favourite products aren’t working 😫
So, you talk about if someone HAD nice curls and then didn't, what about someone who's always had straight hair, never knew anything about curly hair, and as a post-menopausal cancer survivor (no chemo, just radiation) I found that my hair was actually curly. It's barely curly, except at the base of my neck, but still curly. My hair is waist length, which I realize will stretch out the curls. But is there something I should be doing to train my hair? I don't really care if the curls show, I just want to get rid of the frizz. I use an old t-shirt instead of a towel, food for soft shampoo and conditioner, garnier leave in conditioner, and I'm between gels at the moment, but I just got a cheap one. I also air-dry after plopping with the t-shirt because I don't have a diffuser. Thanks for any help! I thought about calling the beauty college and asking if they could give me a trim and tell me about curly hair while taking care of me. 🤷♀

Typically, you would benefit from this if your hair is damaged (we all have some extent of damage from mechanical damage in styling, environmental damage from the sun and then chemical processes like lightening and coloring with peroxide based ingredients). Even when my hair was at its best, the Curlsmith Bond Salve really helped me with curl retention. Hope that helps ❤
Another idea for cast: Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. Never had any gel as strong as this before. People have no business telling anyone how to style their hair!!!
I'm glad that I found you; w/I the last year after the expense of trying a plethora of curly girl products, I realized that I don't have curly hair, I have wavy hair like my Mom. Any recommendations for wavy hair? Thanks
I would check some of my one brand wash days! I go through a bunch of different brands. Additionally, there is a link in my bio for my product guide! I've tried so many throughout the years, and this is a condensed version of my product knowledge.
What worked for me was brain surgery. I had a tumor on my pituitary gland. My hair got really flat. Now one year after surgery I have curls at my roots. I cut off 6 inches and the wave just sprang up.
So helpful! My 50 year old hair recently revealed to me that it wants to be WAVY. I have been on a quest ever since. (Literally typing as I wait for my gel cast to dry. LOL.) I had to warn my husband that while my hair sets, this 1990's gel cast was ON PURPOSE. HAhahAHHA Thank you! (Also--getting my first trim in 3 months on Wednesday.) Wooooo hoo..
Courtney sent in a sample to a lab a few years ago to find out her porosity. Generally, healthy, un-bleached hair is lower porosity. Those of us who color or heat style or have other types of damage are more likely to be higher porosity. Low porosity hair takes a while to get wet, water rolls off. High porosity gets wet in seconds.
Hi Courtney! How do you combine the Pantene clarifying shampoo and the Chelating shampoo? In other words how often do you use the Clarifying one and also the Chelating one? I have super hard water as well and find I have to clarify about every 2 weeks, so should I clarify after the first 2 weeks and chelate after the second 2 weeks? TIA!🌻🌻
I'm a newbie here, please help me get this... the clarifying pantene shampoo has sulfates in order to clean the buildup; but, is there any effect on your hair by using sulfate free shampoos for a prolonged period of time? I've always had 3a to 3b curls, now all of a sudden my hair is getting straight. I'm not correlating the two, but just giving insight as to what made me wonder this!
Have you also tried the Briogio Curl Charisma lines deep conditioner for protein & moisture? It is so good!! I love your videos and followed you awhile now, thank you for providing great tutorials and guidance!
Hi, can I do a clarifying wash, protein treatment and then a bond treatment all in same washday? Secondly, after these treatments, after rinsing, do I need to add a conditioner or do I go straight to the styling products? Thanks!!!
@swavycurlycourtney Totally not a curly hair question/comment but is your shirt a KB, Brandon Lake or Etsy t-shirt? I am assuming the shirt says “Turns Graves into Gardens”. My daughter passed away on Fathers Day 2021 and I would love to get a t-shirt like this.
What would be a good sulfate-free clarifying shampoo, in your opinion? I'm not requesting sulfate-free because of CGM, but because I'm allergic to them, and would rather not have a bunch of pustules on my scalp 😕
Could you recommend a good drug store leave in for fine hair ?I find every leave in to heavy and they weigh my hair down. I used to use as I am leave in but that doesn’t have enough slip.
So helpful! I’m 8 months pregnant and my hair has been curling less and less with each month. I’m hoping the curls come back after pregnancy even more! I have tried clarifying and protein treatments. I use the brown protein treatment mask from shea moisture. Does that one have enough protein in it vs the blue one you held up? Thank you for your help!
hormones play a role in curls! I've read pregnancy can lead to curls being less defined and estrogen having a particular effect on the hair pattern, so that's another thing to take into consideration
Ok I’m guessing this is the Pattern treatment mask that we want to get for the serious protein. I couldn’t find a link in the description, but I’d definitely like to try this one.

When I shoot for a cast, I usually end up with a really stringy look. Not sure why, but the cast is always really hard to get out and my hair looks super stringy, no matter what gel I use. BTW, I love your videos so much! You explain everything so well, and I usually need explaining so badly, lol.

It'a tough... but healthier hair will have different needs... Plus, seasons changing can effect how products perform.
I have 2 curls in my hair that look like I just curled it. The rest of my hair is wavy or almost straight 😢 I’m gonna try this

How often should I use protein? I have fine 2b hair
I have super fine 2b-3a hair and I use protein daily in my conditioner and in my mousse. You just want to make sure you clarify as needed.
How do you find your curl type
Another idea for cast: Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. Never had any gel as strong as this before. People have no business telling anyone how to style their hair!!!

It's not the same, but well water can be hard.
It would depend on the minerals in your well water.
My water has a high amount of iron.
