THANK YOU SO MUCH for all you do!!! I’m 46 and am just now figuring out my own crazy curly hair after a lifetime of frustration and hating my hair. You’re changing lives ❤👏🏻🙏🏻
I learned real quick how awful Shea moisture and Cantu was on my curls. Super weighed down and greasy and I didn’t apply a lot of the product. Now the fragrance free curlsmith gel is chefs kiss especially living in Miami ! I’m on day 5- no refresh and till now the cast is getting softer but I still have lots of definition ❤
@@bellzchellz The Cantù and Shea Moisture is greasy on my hair too. I love the Curlsmith Shine fragrance free products too. I get them at TJ Maxx and they are a better price. My favorite will always be the Quidad because that’s the first gel after Deva Curl I ever used. I don’t even think about Deva Curl anymore.
@ LOL TJ Max is my go to as well for these expensive products! It’s the best! 🤗 I have the climate control Ouidad gel and yesssss it is at the top of my list of favorite gels 💜
Thank youuuu! I was at a LOSS with my curls being frizzy and not holding up even one day! Ended up adding less moisturising products, and used the NYM Curl Talk Hard Hold Gel... Amazing second day curls now! Thanks!!
11:20 I like the way the fluffy which is supposed to be the "bad" hair looks. We need to expand the definition of great looking curls. Day 1 is not most curlies' favorite look.
Yes but my issue is when brands label it as strong hold or “frizz free” when the product is far from that. There’s nothing wrong with a softer hold product for a fluffy look but the labels should accurately reflect that so we know what we’re buying. Another issue i was referring to is when people are struggling with their curls not lasting or having to completely restyle
Mop Top curl enhancing gel was a game changer for me. I can refresh with a light misting of water without frizz. Fragrance is a big issue for me in personal care products & this gel has a slight natural fragrance but nothing that causes headaches or asthma attacks.
Thankyou so much for your video. I'm 51 & my hair gets more curly every year lol. I'm very skeptical about using products on my hair, so knowing which products to use & avoid is a great help. I generally just tie my hair back due to it going frizzy but recently come across the satin bonnet for curly hair & I'm so impressed!! How did I not know about this sooner!! Definately going to try products from now on & see if I can banish the frizz forever 😊
I like the ECO Gels like the Avocado Gel and the clear gel with Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein. They are a little thick but adding water they are great for my bangs. My naturally curly hair is flatter on the top and I have layers in the front so adding this gel my scalp doesn’t get dirty. There’s no fragrance either. It’s frustrating to have clean hair and add a product that’s too oily. Again another excellent video.
Glycerin and sorbitol in my gel makes my hair frizz every time. I only use kinky curly or okra gel by nature's little secret. After it's dry I glaze a tiny bit on with wet hands and it keeps the frizz away and holds all day! Love your videos!
When the season is warm glycerin is my friend but when the dew points get to the 50’s I have to switch to propylene glycol humectants or any other humectants. The formulas out now are really good at putting glycerin way down the ingredient lists I’m going to experiment but I have been striking out so far ever since the rains stopped from the hurricanes. Makes my hair dry, fuzzy, but greasy if it the first or second ingredient.
I use Innersense I create curl memory gel and the mouse and my hair looks good. And last 3 days plus. But lately my hair is in love with Ecoslay Orange Marmalade and top it with Jello shot gel and my hair will turn out WOW WOW WOW. My hair is waist length mix of 2b,2c, fine, medium density and medium porosity.
I get so many compliments on my hair and that is thanks to you. I love the way my curls are doing and letting it go naturally grey has given my hair a really good rest. Loving Ouidad gel and all curlsmith products. I am experimenting with "Not Your Mothers mousse and dry shampoo" they are great together for my fine hair.
I find my fine wavy hair and oily scalp are THRIVING since going back to cleansing shampoos and silicone based conditioners because I'm seeing baby hairs and my waves are curling up more even if I don't style with hold products! I agree that conditioning is essential for hair health but find more grit and hold means more definition and longevity.
Yeah it’s a tricky dance for me. I need detangling and moisture because I don’t brush or comb my hair any more I also but also some grip before styling. I almost returned the Curl Keeper leave-in because it didn’t feel moisturizing or conditioning but it’s very grippy and boosts my curl. I keep it now as a primer.
I have tried the innersense gel I hate it. Very sticky and doesn’t give as much hold than others I have tried. And I’m definitely gonna try to check the list to how to choose gels on your blog because not only 90% of the gels you are referring to are not accessible for me in France (unless I order them online but even some of these would be complicated to find), but everything you said to avoid in gels is exactly what’s available in 80% of gels of French brands, because clean beauty here (which I despise) is very linked to curly hair brands. So a lot of stores only have those gels that are very soft hold. Like just to give you an example I went to a curly hairdresser specialist for them and aloe gel is a super strong hold gel, lmao 💀. most of the gels are those very natural very lightweight botanical based gels. I like to pair these with a stronger home gel but alone they’re not the best for my hair.
YES to all of this! I'm in a very humid subtropical climate and look for all those same ingredients. The Curl Talk hard hold gel gives me massive flash dry if I use it alone, but I've found I can mix a dab of it into another gel to lend stronger hold to that gel without the flash dry. I've even mixed some of it into my Ouidad ACC Stronger Hold gel.
No product works forever. I took a break from these for a year, and then went back to them. They’re working better than they ever did before! And I’m using less product each time. My wallet is happy, my curls are hydrated and bouncy.
I finally had time to watch this. So very helpful as usual. I have great results with the Aveda gel but I know everyone has different hair. Thank you for the great info 😊
Another affordable gel option is Giovanni's LA Hold Styling Gel-- you have to add some water to it but I find its hold right up there with Ouidad's gels, which I only use when I travel to humid places (or it's rainy at home) because otherwise it makes my scalp itch. I have been adapting my use of deep/heavy conditioners but it does get complicated. I have thick, coarse, gray wavy hair that tends to be very dry but if I use too many heavy conditioning products, my waves are weighed down and the back of my head looks dirty a lot faster. So I try to apply conditioners very sparingly to the top/back of my head. I also stopped using heavy deep conditioners unless I'm clarifying first and then afterwards, I apply a very watery leave-in (sparingly) or none at all.
Love you! Did I understand you correctly that for this video you used the aquagel and then the curlsmith? What routine did you use? I'm very curious. Your curls are amazing!
I live in Michigan in the summer, and Arizona in the winter. Lucky me! But I find I need 2 different types of products to cope with the different weather
What do you think of the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls products? I'm wondering specifically about the shampoo and conditioner, the "7-in1 leave-in treatment foam", and the "define & hold flex gel". My hair is long but on the thinner and finer side.
Thank you for this I’ve been using the Shea Moisure curl smoothie & even though I use a tiny amount I’ve got looser curls/waves & perhaps even a tiny bit is too much. I condition in the shower so I’ll be sure to really rinse it out & skip the shea moisture. I currently use Carols Daughter wash day delight wash & conditioner which is probably sufficient
Warning: the AG liquid effects is great but it ruins clothes! Great drug store strong hold MOUSSE is Herbal Essences Volumizing mousse. It has max hold and has oranges on the can. I've mentioned this a few times. Please try!
Exciting video. I bet I dont use any. Im interested to see. I love carols daughter miccealar wash or whatever it is. There is another I love from loreal. Its like a water you apply to your scalp that foams up so well, all build up gone. I would love your thoughts. Cleans my hair like no other. I want to buy curl talk. I have always needed strong hold. Back in the day it was the yellow la looks. I know.. terrible
Innersense I Create Definition Foam is so easy to refresh. I keep my hair out in the shower and it looks like new (or sometimes better than washday). I looooove this foam and it's become my holy grail.
Hi Gena, i just wanted to thank you for this video. I was wondering why my hair got frizzy at the end of my wash day. ❤ I will be trying the liquid effect on it own! Unfortunately here in Canada i haven't see the Curl talk hard gel not even on amazon! ❤
Jessicurl have recently brought out a clarifying shampoo - do you have plans to try it out? I stopped using Jessicurl shampoos this year as I didn't find them cleansing enough for my scalp but I was wondering what you think about the new clarifying formula.
Good info, except for the Curl Talk. I just can't use that brand. It turns to glue in my fair and sticks and I end up with so many knots in my hair. I hate elongating gels and creams. I want more bounce and my hair is already long which makes for looser pattern. My hair likes the Shea Moisture smoothie and my hair especially likes creams. I can handle heavier products though since I have courser and thicker hair. I often use a one and go, the curl cream by Marc Anthony which is so cheap works so well for me and I get a nice cast. I sometimes pair it with the Ouidad climate controlled gel and my hair lasts for over a week without having to refresh. Both products give me good results.
I have most of the gels you mentioned except the Curls botanical. I personally think the Bounce Curl Light Hold Creme Gel surprisingly has very good cast and hold even on day 2 for me. I know that brand is not readily available everywhere, but for me it's the price.
I definitely do not get a strong cast from Bounce Creme gel. I don’t use alot though. It feels so good on my hair wet but it doesn’t give my hair a good set.
I've noticed my hair is a lot more coarse so I was told to use more moisturizing creams because I SHOULD way them down. Any advice for coarse curly hair?
I have fine, medium density, low porosity 4b/c hair, and i have the same issue with the Uncle Funky’s daughter Curly Magic. I noticed that it has hydrolyzed wheat protein, so that could be the reason for the cast but leaving hair frizzy?
The protein wont cause frizz. It's likely because it only uses natural film forming ingredients which don't have as much grip on the hair as something like polymers
1000% review Biolage Gelee styler gel PLEASE. I am mad.. they had a green cap or teal and it was hold level 3. They changed it to pink cap and hold level 2 but I cant give it up. Its amazing. & loreal lock it humidity control hair spray. I want your opinions
@@GenaMarie it appears to be discontinued. People say the Sally’s brand Biotera’s blue label gel is a dupe for it. I can’t speak to that but in my experience the old Biolage is very similar to Curlsmith Hydro Style Flexy Gel
@Star-dj1kw Its so sad. My friend buys it at a discount because she is a hair dresser. They say its the same but different packaging. Its not.. its a whole different hold level. I have both in front of me. I still use it but ahhhh
I did not like the Olaplex no10 gel. Tried it a few times, different amounts and it was just bad. My hair felt heavy and textured. Kind of like an overload of dry shampoo without the dry shampoo. It didn’t matter how little or how much I used. Back it went to Ulta.
Love your tracker.. had bad wash day. I look on my tracker and able to pin point the issue. Love umberto jelly I have low density fine hair however it look nice the next day . I am integrated Ouidad foam can’t get the hang of it, but I think I am doing better and is been 6 day haven’t wash my hair. I refresh with CS shine not all over only pieces tha needs attention. . My hair loves protein bought the big bottle purple label . I am curious with the ag recoil. Let see what kind of adventure I will encounter 😂
Yes just tested a second time and can’t get long lasting hold from it 😕 probably is just my frizzy hair. It was a mess by the time I scrunched out the cast
I often recommend just gel on it's own, especially the first few times you test it to maximize hold. Then, if you find you need more moisture if your hair feels brittle after wash day, add a leave in or cream under it next time
Gena Marie I am so glad I found you. However this sounds a bit mean but are you now sponsored by Curlsmith? When I first watched you you were touting the AG products and I purchased them the recoil and liquid effects. The recoil is amazing but I have short curly fine thin like female pattern baldness and I am now so confused. I also bought the styling brush but only realised after I purchased it ($55 here in Australia) that my hair was probably too short. But I am attempting to use it. I’ve bought the bonnets too lol. I’m a 62 year old widow with grey hair. It’s dry but in good condition. Help I’m drowning Karen 🇦🇺
Just wondering where the heat protecting products fit in your routine. I find when I don't apply a heat protector primer or leave-in my waves are more defined.
I recently tried the curlsmith "light" products and does not work for my fine hair. Can understand why they are so good on frizzy or dry hair but oil weighs my very fine low porosity hair down badly. 2nd ingredient in the gel and curl cream was castor oil 😭.
I have afro textured hair as you can tell by my name and hate castor oil! I reject most of Curl Smith’s products because it has castor oil. Builds up on my hair and gives me cystic acne. 😓
@afrosheenqueen oh I'm sorry for your experience. I don't know why all the hype for those products then, I ended up with dandruff after my first use and have never had it in my life. I thought I might be able to give them away but I think I might chuck them out if they cause other people issues.
What?! You have coaching sessions?? I’ve been watching too many make up videos and ignoring the hair videos because I figured there was no hope for me! lol! I find something that works, deviate once, and my hair never goes back. Or I find something that works, so I beat that one routine to death, and it’s too much of the same products over and over, so my hair decides, enough! And that routine never works again. However, watching this, I see why I eventually go back to the Ouidad gel as my semi happy place.
Yes! I would love to meet with you and get to the bottom of your curl issues. We go through all the steps start to finish, including refreshing. This will save you time and money because I try and work with the products you own. You can book here, and reach out if you can't find a time and I'll open a spot for you: genamarie.co/curl-coaching/
Do you use a curl cream under the UG curl jelly? I have coarse, wavy-curly hair and find that I really need a cream for moisture and clumping. Also, I like the Aveda gel you mentioned, but haven’t had luck with AG Liquid Effects. It leaves me with stringy curls.
could anyone give me tips on my wavy hair ? It’s very heat damaged. High porosity, thick and coarse. Whenever I use a gel, my hair dries sticky and knotted. But what else can I do to keep hold?
Or try a gel with light hold. A cream may work too but has the lightest hold. You may have to experiment with all types of styling products before you find the best hold for you
Is there a conditioner that you recommend? I use trader Joe because it has natural ingredients but hard to wash out and a bit heavy. I have gray a bit course wavy hair . I also use kinky curly leave in a ti y amount and wash though . I may have too much moisture but not sure what to use for conditioner ?
Gel doesn’t work on my hair. I have wavy hair and it’s hard to deal with. Its gets frizzy easily. I noticed cream products work best, I been using mistress by IGK mixed with the Shea moisturizing curl and I get a decent result.
My hair is fine and gets greasy easily. I use mainly drugstore and I just feel like I could never achieve those “insta curls” so definitely gonna try more lightweight products. I also notice a lot of products flash dry my hair..I’m thinking it’s the glycerin in them so if anyone can recommend some good products that don’t have glycerin I’d appreciate that!!
I guess my confusion is how often should I be deep conditioning and should I be using a conditioner every time I shampoo? I wash my hair twice a week. I believe I have medium density and medium to high porosity - 2B/C with occasional ringlets! I use mostly Curlsmith, Treluxe (I’m on their website this month!), KÉRASTASE, and Aveda (which I never like my results from) Thanks!
As a general rule of thumb, minimum for clarify and deep condition is once a month, maximum once a week. All other wash days would be regular shampoo and conditioner.
The rule should be use the least amount possible to get the result you want. I am shocked to see people using enormous amounts of product to get a result that isn't actually consistent with the natural way the hair wants to grow. Curly hair has a mind of its own. Work with it, not against it.
Ever heard of a situation where conditioner, or deep conditioner, makes hair immediately seize up and tangle, lose all slip? Almost like it does the opposite of what it’s supposed to. And then you can’t even rinse the feeling out of it.
This reminds me of flash drying or maybe your hair is protein sensitive? Hope you can find something that works for you. It's so hard when every product works differently for every person!
This happened to me with deep conditionner. Hair got all tangled and adding more conditonner was making things worse. The solution was to wash with shampoo and then use the conditionner. I was using LUS at the time and reached for them. They told me to avoid using deep conditionner for more than a few minutes. I think my hair was « over conditionned»
That's what happens to me sometimes and I take it to be flash drying. I'm very protein sensitive and I think it's that for me. Unfortunately you need to rewash your hair and start again with something else you know works for you. I had this happen with the devacurl deep conditioner for coarse curly hair ( which is my hair type).
Depends on what the conditioner is but the only times that happened to me was when I used a heavy duty protein conditioner or treatment. Now, I’m high porosity so I wholly embrace protein and haven’t had a bad conditioner experience in a long time.
is there such a thing as a mouse that does not have fragrance or super chemical smell? My hair looks great with mouse compared to a gel but I cannot find one that does not about knock me out with the smell...
Does anyone here know if these hair products have a “use by” or expiration date? I guess I’m asking about shelf-life, but that sounds so vague. Worry the money we’re spending, there should be some definitive info. re this.
On the drugstore side of things, I find the Raw Sugar Truly Unruly shampoo to be a rather low, mild fragrance. It cleanses the hair without completely stripping. The second best products are found in the drugstore for my hair are the Honest shampoos and conditioners that you find in the baby section. It really should be marketed for adults it’s really good ingredients. They have a fragrance free shampoo.

Yes those are great for coarse hair. It’s finer hair types that get weighed down by them
Thank you for the information! So helpful!
I have most of the gels you mentioned except the Curls botanical. I personally think the Bounce Curl Light Hold Creme Gel surprisingly has very good cast and hold even on day 2 for me. I know that brand is not readily available everywhere, but for me it's the price.
So interesting because it's not long lasting for me. Everyone's hair is so different!
Amazing list of products with various price point options, what to look for, and so in depth. Thank you.
Great Video! Not related, but where did you get your Apple watch band? i love it!

1000% review Biolage Gelee styler gel PLEASE. I am mad.. they had a green cap or teal and it was hold level 3. They changed it to pink cap and hold level 2 but I cant give it up. Its amazing. & loreal lock it humidity control hair spray. I want your opinions
I love this gel. When I read your comment, I looked on Amazon and sure enough, the one with the blue lid is gone ☹️
This has been on my list to try forever so I’m finally going to have to order it
@@GenaMarie it appears to be discontinued.
@GenaMarie I cant wait. Im so excited. I NEED your opinion
I love ouida moisturizing locks leaving in conditioner it does not make my hair greasy and i like it ouida regular gel 😊
For some reason my hair finds this leave-in drying over time. It’s a shame because I have 2 bottles, lol. 😅
Is this advice also for mixed /black hair
hi gena! i was wondering, have you tried the new olaplex gel? if so, what do you think about it?
I did not like the Olaplex no10 gel. Tried it a few times, different amounts and it was just bad. My hair felt heavy and textured. Kind of like an overload of dry shampoo without the dry shampoo. It didn’t matter how little or how much I used. Back it went to Ulta.
@@amyd6398thanks for the info!
I’m so glad to hear you like it!
Have you tried the Miche's tropical oasis gel? It's become my new favorite
Yes just tested a second time and can’t get long lasting hold from it 😕 probably is just my frizzy hair. It was a mess by the time I scrunched out the cast
When applying a strong hold gel, should I use it on damp or soaking wet hair? And should I micro plop before or after applying the gel? Thanks
Check out my other videos for my process, such as this recent one: ua-cam.com/video/D5-WIHCuqdI/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
Gracias, por ti quiero aprender inglés ❤
I’m new to all of this and have been trying all kinds of products My question do I need to use a cream and then a gel product or on its own.
Help I’m drowning

Just wondering where the heat protecting products fit in your routine. I find when I don't apply a heat protector primer or leave-in my waves are more defined.
I show in my most of my styling videos. I use the CS Miracle Shield on clean hair right before any curl cream or gel
I like the Curl Jelly by itself or with their banana butter leave in. I’m testing their Curl Jelly cream here soon.
Some of the products leave a waxy, white residue in my hair. What products do you recommend to avoid this?
Which ones? This happens when there is buildup, using the wrong combo of products that arent compatible, or using too much.
@@GenaMarie twist hair care and curly hair shampoo and conditioner
@@marina43978 Sounds more like buildup!
As Gena said you need to clarify.
could anyone give me tips on my wavy hair ?
It’s very heat damaged. High porosity, thick and coarse. Whenever I use a gel, my hair dries sticky and knotted. But what else can I do to keep hold?
Try using a mouse
@@jenniferguevara2809 my friend said that mousse is best for finer/thinner hair. Mine is coarse, high porosity and density
Or try a gel with light hold. A cream may work too but has the lightest hold. You may have to experiment with all types of styling products before you find the best hold for you
Funny, I’ve had much better luck with the Innersense I Create Hold than the Ouidad one you like so much!
That's great! It does give a stronger cast, but just doesn't seem to last for my hair type.
I linked my recommendations in the description box!
I've noticed that i get a gel cast when i air dry but not when i diffuse, any advice?
This could be that your gel doesn't give enough hold. You should be able to diffuse it without frizz, if you're diffusing properly too
I guess my confusion is how often should I be deep conditioning and should I be using a conditioner every time I shampoo? I wash my hair twice a week. I believe I have medium density and medium to high porosity - 2B/C with occasional ringlets! I use mostly Curlsmith, Treluxe (I’m on their website this month!), KÉRASTASE, and Aveda (which I never like my results from) Thanks!
As a general rule of thumb, minimum for clarify and deep condition is once a month, maximum once a week. All other wash days would be regular shampoo and conditioner.
@@GenaMarie thank you!
the x pic, ADORABLE! lol
The rule should be use the least amount possible to get the result you want. I am shocked to see people using enormous amounts of product to get a result that isn't actually consistent with the natural way the hair wants to grow. Curly hair has a mind of its own. Work with it, not against it.
Yes!!!🙌🏽 I absolutely agree with your first statement.
Ever heard of a situation where conditioner, or deep conditioner, makes hair immediately seize up and tangle, lose all slip? Almost like it does the opposite of what it’s supposed to. And then you can’t even rinse the feeling out of it.
Interesting. My first instinct is buildup and/or hard water
I love the curl smith fragrance free but I don't think the gel holds enough :(
Ag Mousse Gel. The hold is great as well.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of these products in my country before 😢😢
Does anyone here know if these hair products have a “use by” or expiration date? I guess I’m asking about shelf-life, but that sounds so vague. Worry the money we’re spending, there should be some definitive info. re this.
Very helpful video!!!
By the way, I'd love to see suggestions for using products while living in very dry climates.
Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic
I need a good cleansing shampoo ( not clarifying) without any fragrance
The Shine one from Curlsmith! amzlink.to/az0MRnIaoqMmM
The curlsmith fragrance free shampoo is cleansing without being clarifying.
On the higher spendy side of things, The Necessaire is a good fragrance, free shampoo found in Sephora.
