I love Mama Noi she is always smiling and happy, no doubt she could handle running the show!
Good that your mom is still so active. Shredded papaya, chili, cheery tomatoes, long bean, sugar, dried shrimp, some peanuts and fish source. Sure your mom can run the show.... on her own.
My favorite Som Tum I had in Bangkok was made by a sweet husband and wife street vendor right in the heart of Khlong Toei (March 2019)...The best I've ever had!!
Authentic Som Tom today in San Francisco is hard to find. Very much the same as trying to find a real fried style taco. Sometimes the Som Tom ingredients are not the same and sometimes omitted. Most disappointing is the Som Tom is being made to satisfy the american taste buds. The fish sauce is not used, the shrimp is not used and the food is now Fusion style.
I first experienced Thai Som Tom back in the 70's while in the service. It was the best!!
I think food should stay original to the country it comes from. But I guess "MONEY" decides how the food tastes.
Not the ingredients.
I just made your Som Tum recipe for dinner tonight and it was amazing. We went to Thailand for Christmas this year and I ate Som Tum AND Mango Sticky Rice every day. Thank goodness you have both recipes just for me. I bought dried shrimp while I was there just for this recipe (We are stationed in Okinawa, Japan so I wasn't sure if we could find it here). Turns out the jar said dried shallots not dried shrimp. My eyes are old. It was still yummy with the dried shallots. Thank you so much!! P.S. I chopped the papaya the way you demonstrate and I still have all my fingers.

Hello ....from Holland
Im late to the party.
There is no exact recipe, i.e napoli pizza dough.
Once you get your base down then make it your own, it’s extremely easy. Add subtract to taste, add ingredients as you like, or subtract.
Alot of people try to duplicate something they had from memory from a fav restaurant.
Just ask the restaurant how they make it, but its simple with few ingredients adjust for your pallet and make something you love

My daughter bought a rather large- sized stone and mortar pestle In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and put it in her carry-on luggage. They confiscated it at the airport because I guess they thought she could use it as a weapon.

I asked my wife to make me a bowl of som tum, sad to say it was a disaster. Bought som tum yesterday from a Thai resto and now i'm hooked on it. Watching from the Philippines.
Hi, I did this Thai Papaya Salad twice for my Malaysian, Australian and Italian friends like the way you’ve demonstrated. Oooh....it was such a hit and everyone enjoyed it so much. I didn’t take the risk like your mum Noi julienning the green papaya with a knife. I simply and easily used the zig zag peeler which I bought from Phuket. It did wonders too. So Papaya Salad was possible to make at home too. Yes I am from Adelaide. Just writing here to say a very big THANKS to both of you for sharing.
