Hi, thanks for this awesome vid. I have a question can this possibly put in a jar and make it like papaya salad in a jar. If I preserved it how many days it will last?
Our friend wiggy from Thailand whom we so dearly love so much like part of our family because we have known her since the eighties and have found her again after losing contact with her used to make this and I used to love it so much. Sometimes she would make milder versions both hot and fish-wise and sometimes she would make it strong. I remember how at first I was grossed out by the smell and taste of it but over time I loved eating it. Sometimes when she made the much weaker ones I would not enjoy it as much. Now that I know what is in this delicious recipe I will enjoy it even more. I think I will head out to my local Laos food restaurant and order some of this; "the strong one." Thank you so much for sharing this from you and Wiggys beautiful culture. Love you Wiggy.
What I love about this video is that she went through the technique and process thoroughly, not just the recipe. We have a lot of papaya trees and chili plants in the farm. Cannot wait to try this. 🇵🇭
Im glad Im from Sri Lanka because almost all of the ingredients are easily found here. I have papayas, limes, chillies and long beans in my garden so I don't have to spend too much on this delicious dish ♥️
For me, Green Papaya Salad takes the crown. In my humble opinion it's pretty much the best salad in the world. It is such a taste explosion Thank you for this quick and easy recipe.
My mom use cucumber or vermicelli noodles also. I used carrots or raw mango :) in Thailand they have so many varieties and even corn or crab but that's another recipe. Also shrimp.
Som Tum was my favourite dish in Thailand. I actually prefer the Som Tum Poo Pla from the Isaan region, which seemed to surprise many locals as westerners tend to shy away from that variety. I'll definitely make this some time soon!
For the palm sugar, I often just let it soak in the lime juice that I squeezed out. The acidity breaks and dissolves the hard pieces of sugar. Dissolving could take a while depending how big the sugar pieces are.
the moment you chop the papaya with the big knife, it changes my entire life. I can julienne the papaya better than anyone in my house now. Thanks Pai! Love from Indonesia.
Dear Pai, eversince I was in Thailand last year I am cooking Thai inspired dishes. I am really happy I found your channel and with all your great explanations I get better and better. Thank you so much for inspiration, your secret tricks you reveal and explain....and your english is so nice and good to listen to!
Great recipe and explanations! I used it as inspiration for a vegetarian version. A little lemon pickle (Indian pickle) took the place of the pickled crabs and gave complexity + acidity + some salt and heat. Delicious!
I do not usually use tamarind in my papaya salad but with your recipe, it’s seriously spot on Thai flavors! I now use it all the time! Thank you for this recipe! Yum!
Years ago I watched this video, purchased all the ingredients (including palm sugar that I still have), made at home. It was a sticky endeavor & I used too much pepper, but I crave this salad! I don’t make it very often, but when I do...I use this recipe. Thank you.
We all loved it when we were in Thailand.. every single day we enjoyed it... I loved the way YOU explained the recipe... I'll definitely give it a try...
I followed your recipe and it turns out really good 👍 exactly like the one I used to have when I was in Bangkok, thank you! I’ve been missed som tum for soooo long time, I went to three Asian supermarkets to gather all the tools and ingredients , it totally worth it!
Thank you for this recipe Pailin. 😃 I just made this for my family today and all of them loved it. Even though I used salt to season instead of fish sauce (as we are short on it), the dish still tastes amazing. ❤
I just want to say that your video was so very refreshing and so clear in the instructions. I love your enthusiasm and natural manner. I hope you are still doing this - making videos on You tube. Excellent!
This was one of daily eating dish ....which I used to eat in chonburi's ...restaurant But In India ...I saw this and now I am able to have it again Thailand is a great place
Thank you for the lovely recipe! I microwaved the chili and garlic because I don't like the taste of them raw but even after that it still tasted really good, dare I say, even better than the one I had in Bangkok
I've watched a lot of asian cooking but love yours the most! I like your not over the top attitude and keep things very informative. Thanks for the recipe!
Claymore007 I was wondering what makes thai papaya salad and Laos papaya salad different. I mean I know they’re different but I wanted to know in both distinctive ways and thai is sweeter and sour and Laos is spicy and fishy
Made this recipe and it was AMAZING. The first Thai dish I've made at home that was actually better than what I've gotten at a restaurant. I used the 3 Crabs Fish sauce that you've recommended and I think it really makes a difference, it's just not as funky as the other ones I've cooked with.
Thank you .I finally found your video that showed the real Thai papaya salad. I watched so many CREATIVE videos that people add basil, maple syrup, and tamarind paste. I just want a real Thai papaya salad.😊
My whole family love papaya salad. We remember this when we were children, living in Singapore in the early 60's. I made one from just memory and what my mum remembered from when we were there. It turned out okayish!, but it can be better, after having watched you making the authentic version with the right ingredients. I'll be out shopping for the ingredients and making one very soon. Can't wait
My mom and I used to buy papaya salad from a local Thai restaurant. It was so good. Back then, that was the only Thai restaurant in this area. Now there are many Thai restaurants, but none are as good as that one was.
Thank you so much for making this video!! The first time I made papaya salad I watched your video and it’s the only video I would watch when making papaya salad now!! So yummy!
I lived in Thailand for 5 months and discovered som tum. Easily one of my favorite dishes in the world. Thanks for explaining it so well! I'm gonna make myself some as a New Years treat :)
I learn to slice and cut the lime and rest of the citruses the right way now...thanks so much! By the way, this salad is heaven on Earth...thanks Angel!
I'm gonna try to make this. Cambodians have a similar salad, we call it "bok lahong". It translates to pound/beat papaya. Bok= pound/beat/crash, Lahong= papaya. Thanks for sharing.
Pai: I made my first Green Papaya salad today using your cookbook recipe, along with my new mortar and pestle (the clay one specific foWr GPS. I used 1 Tbsp fish sauce + 1 Tbsp Shrimp paste. It was excellent!
That’s the Laos version with crab paste. Will stink the house but worth it and add carrot to it for a beautiful color and taste great then try sweet rice (aka sticky rice) instead, you will love this which I love every time I make my papaya salad.
I love your videos Pai coz it's not just about recipes. You teach us techniques and Thai culture as well. Bravo. This green papaya salad makes me wanna go to the market and get all the ingredients and make it myself. LOL. :)
OMG!!! A little bit salty crispy chicken skin makes me mad as it can get along well with papaya salad. Have you ever tried crispy pork skin? It is yummy, too.
Papaya taste so much better this way. We indians use to cool papaya but ever since i tasted som tum. I always prefer this . Its refreshing easy and healthy.
I know this is late but I'm so glad I found this channel. I have always wanted to travel to Thailand and experience the food and culture. This only rekindles my need to go!
Glad to hear that and hope to see you including other upvoters after the COVID gone. However please don't expect too much from us. Thailand is just a small and humble country which, like every places, has both good and bad people/things. Expecting something too much usually leads to disappointment because it does not meet our level of expectation, even though it might be OK. Anyway, you are always welcome here. Be our guests anytime.
A thai friend of mine taught me how to cut a lime the thai way back in middle school and you’re right, I’ve been cutting a lime that way ever since. It changes everything!

I went to Thailand 5 times and this is my favorite Thai dish. What you did is great - I would add to it stinky pickled crab or even raw softshell crab, Makok fruit and the salty egg yolk from those Chinese salted boiled eggs. I usually add 4 egg yolks as the fat cuts thru the sour quite well. Roasted cashew goes well on the top too.
Im in love whit it. Papaya salad was the most spicy meal i ever had in Thailand, but even if you take fire the addiction make you you keep going to eat until the end, lovely

I didn’t have papaya so I used cucumber and jicama and it was still so bomb! Honestly it’s the sauce that makes this recipe in my opinion
Carrot or corn also very good
I was thinking green mango too
Actually this exist in thailand too, som tam tang
@@dueyduey1611 wow i never knew that 😍
My mom use cucumber or vermicelli noodles also. I used carrots or raw mango :) in Thailand they have so many varieties and even corn or crab but that's another recipe. Also shrimp.
OMG the way you julienned the papaya has blown my mind!
You really have a flare or knack for doing a great presentation. It was very clear , easy to follow and your personality shines. Thank you.

Brown coco nut sugar or even white sugar is basically just as good. I see most vendors in Thailand use white sugar.
😮
Grew up with Som Tum, bring back a lot of childhood memories, thank you !

Really sophisticated presentation. From what I remember living in Thailand you presented the correct version of home made papaya salad.
Omg ! I remember making this helping my Thai friend 25 years ago. She had me cut it with a machete outside on the patio.
Lol! That's gangster af!
I am Filipino and i love Thai foods. And this one is my fave ❤️💖
I had spicy papaya salad for the first time 2 days ago and it was amazing! I feel like it might be a new obsession

Claymore007 I was wondering what makes thai papaya salad and Laos papaya salad different. I mean I know they’re different but I wanted to know in both distinctive ways and thai is sweeter and sour and Laos is spicy and fishy
Laos style usually use padek which is a preserved fermented fish sauce. thai style use the light fish sauce most people are familiar with
I’m salivating..
So yummy

That Singha would go so well with the salad!
Papaya salad is one of my favorite dishes I like it the traditional Thai style and the Laos style with the "Dirty fish sauce'

I will open my own tomyum restaurant in the Philippines next year and this papaya will be a compliment. Thanks
