I'm all for saving whatever is possible but in this case I'd have just sawed the door up for firewood and made new ones. The end result was great though, good job!
yes, when he was stripping the door down i was wondering what part of the original door was going to be reused as every bit of it looked rotten. I thought he was going for a Trigger's Broom type restoration.
Have you seen the price of timber on this side of the Pond these days? I'm recycling 150 year old roof timbers, as the occasional damaged table saw blade & planer blades are less of an outlay than new timber, plus the old stuff is tight grained, old growth & about as stable & seasoned as you can get.
Great work, i like all the effort and detail you put into it. Problem is, that D3 glue is water proof but not weather proof. So it can withstand water for a short period but if the wood is exposed to rain on a regular basis and the water seeps into a crack in the paint, the glue will come apart. Same problem with the already glued up boards you put on the rotted ends. That glue will not withstand weather if it's wood made for furniture. You need D4 glue or epoxy if you want it to last another 30 years. I understand the point of keeping as much as possible but in this case, everything is covered in paint anyway. So making all new wooden pieces and keeping the metal hardware would have been the best restoration as it would have restored the looks and the original durability. But still a joy to watch. 😊
That's a tremendous amount of turd-polishing to save a few sticks of old pine tongue-and-groove. I would have tossed it in the fire and started over with the old metal hardware.
Wow, this is such a thorough and helpful guide on restoring old doors! I really appreciate the step-by-step breakdown on handling rotting wood-it makes the process feel way less intimidating. The tips on choosing the right materials and tools were especially useful, and the end result looks amazing. Thanks for sharing your expertise and breathing new life into something most people would just replace! 👏👏"
