🍝KETCHUP Spaghetti Napolitan -- easy 30-minute pantry meal | Pantry Eats

- #SpaghettiNapolitan, or just "Naporitan" in Japanese, is a popular and tasty Japanese pasta dish that uses ketchup for the sauce. During these days of social-distancing and panicked shopping, I thought some of you might appreciate an easy and delicious recipe using ingredients you probably already have. Also, don't knock it before you try it, there's a reason why so many Japanese children (adults, too!) love Naporitan, so here's how to make it. #pantryeats

Who knew we'd all be needing Emmy's Hard Times Recipes
True. Though, I try to remember that people have had it worse. Of course, I may be speaking prematurely. Not to mention, that I have to remember that to anyone with a loved-one that is sick, I guess this is the worst thing ever for them. At least this keeps my mind off stuff and gives me something interesting to make too.
We gonna need the RATIONS playlist soon , lol!
A video with spaghetti and butter mmm Quick and easy :P
@Thunder Rhodes I went to the grocery store yesterday and all they had left were vegan fake-meats. At least we know people would literally rather starve than eat vegan meatballs.
Right? I was already thinking I might get a chance to make hot water pie soon.
Emmy: talking about deglazing the pan to get all the good bits
Me: suddenly hears Binging with Babish “I am fond of fond”.
Babish did a chickpea pantry episode. I'm delighted that the UA-cam community is embracing this and making the best out of it. :)
angiekaye130 I saw that! I love that youtubers are putting out thoughtful videos for right now ❤️
I immediately thought of him too, I just started watching his channel and I'm completely addicted!
Michelle Terra Binging with Babish, Emmy, Sorted Food, and Bon Appetite are my go to cooking channels. 😁 They’re all so wonderful and cheerful, and fun to watch
I am developing quite the crush on Andrew lately. I realized he has a girlfriend from a video from December, and I'm sad. 💔

I'm chronically ill and housebound for 3 years already, meaning I don't have many groceries and can't cook for long before having to lay down. so this series is perfect for me and I hope there'll be many more episodes! your channel has been really useful to me in general
I’ve even housebound for about 6 years, I feel you ❤❤❤
I love this idea! Just in general, even after this craziness is over. Lazy people that want to cook but don’t have quality ingredients. Please continue this!
Well I'm making ribs and mashed potatoes but I cant find any potatoes and in tired if driving everywhere lol
Mykee Wattz - potato chips ground up? Just thinking on top of my head.
@@damien1781 you could make a carrot or beet puree instead...if you have either of those floating around in your pantry.
Mykee Wattz they sell instant mashed potatoes like potatoes flakes you just whip up with milk and butter. Sometimes for a easy quick week night dinner side I pick up a bob Evans mashed potatoes container they’re already made and ready to go just pop in the microwave stir and serve. They also sell already made bob Evans Mac and cheese and they’re just easy sides to go along with meals in a pinch. But they do sell instant mashed potatoes flakes either in a package or a box. Hopefully you can find your potatoes lol.
I love this series idea. And with the COVID craziness, this is probably gonna be more and more important. I totally see myself making this when things start to get rough. Stay safe everyone!
I came across this dish a while ago. I realize how it might sound to some people, but it is surprisingly good.
My recipe is mostly the same. Mine has double the mushrooms, 100 grams prosciutto, 2 diced shallots (instead of onion), 1/4 cup ketchup, and 2 tbsp strained tomatoes. I served it with Tabasco sauce and lots of Parmesan.
It is dinner for two and takes like 20 minutes to cook.
Does it taste “ketchup-y” though? All of the other ingredients sound good and I love the ease of this recipe, but I have a hard time imagining I wouldn’t be tasting only the ketchup in every bite.
I thought of that too! I wouldn't be able to get "ketchup" out of my mindset while eating this. But perhaps the star of the dish really is about the ketchup-y flavor! Another possibility is that when adding the ketchup to the still hot pan, it sort of cooks off the ketchup-y hit. Also, there were lots of aromatics here that was added which may contribute to the mellowing down of the ketchup-y flavor.
Ketchup is comprised of tomato paste, vinegar and corn syrup so I guess those ingredients could be individually added to the dish and the taste would be the same. As ketchup, they’re conveniently combined as one.
Tips: To do the “fan” thing you need to twist the bundle of spaghetti like you’re twisting wet cloth, and then let go
At first I thought you were talking about when Emmy was plating, and I was worried you wanted her to grab the finished saucy pasta with her hands and wring it out lol
Two hands, twisting in opposite directions above the pot of water, then let go.
Indian sunburn it
I feel like the cremora tart and also the instant coffee whip are both pantry eats
For sure! I'll include them in the playlist.
And maybe some Hard Times stuff could work.
I’ve been using the coffee whip lately. Though not exactly as Emmy did. I just put it in my milkfrother cold setting, it foams up half the mixture, and I’ll mix in ice and milk and a bit of chocolate syrup. Beats the ice coffee from anywhere else.
The Navajo coffee... would it work with regular all purpose flour?
And the impossible coconut pie!
I've felt like ketchup has been getting a bad rap the last decade or so.
It's just puréed tomato, sugar and vinegar, people! Not some toxic sludge!
Sorry, commercial ketchup is horrible--- high glucose corn syrup, white vinegar, msg... Why would i feed this to my kids?? Also would
in no way allow my kids to eat that much bacon, butter and cheese in one sitting.
Donna Taylor hun, these are hard times. no room for your gluten free non-GMO nonsense.
@@jessii967 😂😂this cracked me up
Donna Taylor white vinegar? Since when is vinegar bad for us. Freaks... Is everything toxic these days? Go eat some raw granola and leave the rest of us alone why don’t you.

When I was a kid my grandmother made chocolate gravy I would love to try that again it's very much like chocolate pudding but thicker and it's something that I would love to see that recipe for I never was lucky enough to get it from her. Chocolatey it uses flour roux to make it and at the end you velvet it with butter.
Oh wow did you bring up a blast from the past! My grandma made that too when I was little, and she's been gone 35 years now. I did find a recipe that resembles what my grandmother did, and though my husband thinks I'm nuts, I'm making biscuits and chocolate gravy tomorrow. Give this a try!

@@Aelffwynn that may be why my husband looked at me so askance. He's from Buffalo, NY, and this may very much be a southern thing. LOL Glad I could help you give your husband a delicious memory!
My grandmother made it and it was a way to make a sweet treat to share with her family during hard times since it just requires biscuits - sugar, cocoa butter, flour and milk. (Canned milk works awesome)
@@genericrobin6597 chocolate sauce, at least the way I know it, is much thinner than the velvety thickness of chocolate gravy. When I think chocolate sauce, I think Hershey's syrup. Chocolate gravy has the thickness of a roux-based gravy, even though it doesn't start with a roux.

*Emmy squeezes out the rest of the bottle*...
Emmy, would you like some vegetables with your ketchup? *lol*
"Ooo, yeah."
it's only 3-4 tablespoons (squeezes a whole lot in, then a bit more).
My mother always made spaghetti with ketchup. Ground beef, onions, ketchup, a little water to make it more saucy. That was it.
Edited to add: ooo, yeah
My grandmother came to the US from Ireland in 1900 and when she made spaghetti, she used to make it with either ketchup or tomato soup up until my Mom got married and learned that sauce wasn't made with that.
When i was a kid my mom would make what she called macaroni and tomatoes. Just add tomato soup and butter or margarine and a little milk to cooked macaroni. I still make it sometimes.
It probably was still good though lol she was creative : )
I think that’s a really sweet family story ❤️❤️💕💕
@@afn-bd2ro That sounds good. Got to give it a try.
My family still makes spaghetti with canned tomato soup, a spaghetti sauce seasoning packet, ground turkey or beef, and noodles. It's good, I don't like chunky sauce.

Thank you for answering Emmy and Pandora! :)
This kind of reminds me of my m-i-l's kitchen. She raised 7 kids on her own, no help, and very little money. So Monday was spaghetti with 'sauce' (ketchup), Tuesday was chili (the base was the leftover sauce from Monday's spaghetti), and Wednesday was chili-mac where all the leftovers from Monday and Tuesday were added with more ketchup and whatever extra pasta was in the house plus fresh hamburger.
Thankyou for this, Emmy! All your videos calm me so much during stressful times so this is definitely a good video for what's going on in the world right now. Keep up the amazing attitude!

I miss ketchup so much. I developed a tomato allergy as an adult. :(
Id love to see some pantry recipes about beans or using beans in diff forms to create something we wouldn't think of.
#AmyR Tomato allergy...interesting. Are you also allergic to any other acidic types of vegetables or fruits? What about carrots? Acidic fruits and vegetables are chemically linked. Carrots link to many other fruits and vegetables by another chemical link. ...Do antihistamines help your allergy? Is it a dermal (skin) reaction allergy or respiratory (sinus, breathing) allergy? ...Sorry I've never heard of a tomato allergy. Anything can cause allergic reactions to specific people. Metal allergies are kind of weird but happen. People biochemically allergic to other people happens...super weird. ...I wish you the best in all matters of life. I learn new stuff constantly.
Perhaps you could try banana ketchup? The ones I’ve tried are very like tomato-based ketchup in taste and texture.
My mother was a ketchup addict, she put it on everything! And then she found out she was allergic to nightshades, and there went the ketchup, and every other tomato product. She shares your pain.
om my. stay strong! maybe a little once in a while would'nt hurt right? or is it like a severe peanut allergy?
I'm also allergic to tomatoes. You can make a surprisingly good ketchup substitute with pureed beets!

Yay!! I love pantry meals! My favorite is pasta puttanesca (aka whore’s pasta). Made of shelf-stable items. The idea is that the sex workers weren’t awake in the morning to go to the markets, but still cooked things for their customers who were hungry. 😂
I also love puttanesca. I became a fan of anchovies after having it.
Lol. That’s hilarious. Now I like the dish even more!
Tomato soup and a quarter cup of parmesan cheese makes a decent sauce too.
You made this not even seem like a hard time meal! Thank you Emmy, sending you and your family positive thoughts❤
I love the idea of using products we got available in our pantry. I actually started doing that and i just love the many recipes you can come up with when you start putting together ingredients. 💖
Oh to do the fancy spaghetti thing you hold the spaghetti bundle vertically over the middle of the pot with both hands, like with your index finger and thumb from both hands, two OK signs :D and twist your hands in opposite directions (this makes the pasta go at an angle evenly all around!) and then let go and it should drop out into that fan! Once I saw it demonstrated I always did it that way cuz it's fun and makes the pasta stick less hehe
Me too lol it's very satisfying
Vindication! I've always put ketchup on my spaghetti. Now I know it's not as weird as people think.

Relax! There’s so much you can do at home that you just don’t think of. Is there any room or cupboard that’s just a mess that never gets dealt with? Have any old photo albums or home videos from past times to look at? Take up a craft either by trying it at home or at least watch tutorials to learn, make your home nice and cozy with some scented candles and just seize the day with a good book, have a little home spa and just pamper yourself- it’s good for both body and mind. Look out through the window and appreciate the beautiful day and the simple things in life, allow yourself to just slow down and smell the roses, and recharge your batteries for when life goes back to more normal again. It’s really not too bad being “stuck at home” if you just try to make something positive out of it :)

When I was young my parents would secretly put ketchup on my spaghetti. I would accuse them of putting ketchup on my spaghetti. They would laugh and deny the “sauce” was ketchup. I would then proceed to eat all the spaghetti. I suspected something was up because the sauce on my plate looked different from my parents. One day I caught my mom red handed squirting ketchup on my plate. From then on the joke was over and I never ate ketchup on spaghetti again. I was not a picky eater so there was no real reason to put ketchup on my spaghetti other than it was funny to my parents. I can’t be too mad because I wanted to be more sophisticated than I was. A snobby but clueless child is funny.
Sounds like my son. He "hated" fish from age 3 to about 6, so we had lots of take out "chicken". The local take out is "Captain D's" and they didn't do chicken, but we convinced him that they did.
