HUGE Butcher Axe Restoration

- Restoration of a Huge Axe from the northern Sweden. This is a heavy huge rough looking axe that is going thru a transformation. See me restore this tool to beyond awesome.
ABOUT THE AXE
I bought this axe from a local farmer here in the northern Sweden. He told me that it has been used as a slaughter axe, to chop heads of chickens. Its maybe + 100 years old and has been repaired along the way. So it was not original looking when I received is. Some one has been welding on the axe head so it would attach to a wooden stick. NOT good!
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
I started by removing the wooden stick. And all the nuts and bolts. After that I gave it a nice sandblasting. I removed the non-original handle fitting with my angle grinder and welded the two holes together.
I did not have any information about the original axe handle fittings. I could only imagine how they should look based on the little rusty part which was left from the original ones. So I decided to forge some new ones with old blacksmith steel to match the old axe. I think they came out perfectly. I had an old wooden handle in hickory wood that I fitted to match.
I hardened the edge of the axe and gave it a really rough old look. It was all held together by some custom brass rivets that I hammered in the holes I drilled. I gave it some oil and did some easy polishing and added a custom decoration on the top of the handle.
I am very pleased about this restoration. I think it turned out to be a very rough and cool axe.

Hello :D I wanna be like you when I grow up-
as someone who deals with light sensitivity and migraines a lot, I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for that black, 50% opacity circle on your welding. it means the world to me
I am very happy to hear that it helped you :)
@@AwesomeRestorations I thought you were trying to stop harmful light from boiling our retinas haha
@@kenjaminrar Emitted by a smartphone screen? Lmao, you would never hurt your eyes unless you are welding (or someone else) in real life
mas oiooooooooioooio
I got a migraine a few weeks ago on right brain. I kept playing video games even after it started when I know shouldve stopped.
It is a good old "headchopper". Big thanks for this awsome video!!
The welding makes it a modern tool. Probably an axe for some hunters or butchery
That’s what I thought but is it confirmed?
@@Joanne8p If you click on the downward arrow under the video he says what it was used for, and more information about the item.
@@sarahbrewer8945 I should have looked. But chickens ok, I immediately thought executions…
@@Joanne8p Well the blade looks big enough!
Cheers Martin!!! Every restoration or creation you’ve shared is priceless! Absolutely can’t wait to see your next video.
Many thanks!
I swear to you, when I grow up, I would like to dedicate myself to the same thing that you do, your work is amazing and it is truly an inspiration to me.
Wow, thank you! I hope you will 👍❤
Hi Martin! May I just say I love ❤️ everything about you and your channel! Not only are you an accomplished, gifted artisan, but a thoughtful and conscientious person! I love how you take the time to describe your Restorations in the descriptions...many do not put a fraction of the detail and information you provide to your Subscribers and fans (of which I am a huge one...fan that is)! You really do beautiful work in the truest sense of an artist. Beautifully rugged restoration! Cheers 🍻 👏!
thanks a lot for your comment and support it means a lot to me. Have a nice week-end :)

What a thoughtful and beautiful comment, I agree with all you said 🏆.
Absolutely stunning! Incredible work. My daughter and I watch your videos and our only gripe is they don't last long enough ☺️. Big love from NZ

Martin, throughout the restoration I tried to imagine what the axe was used for and came up with it was used either as a weapon or to chop straight down as beheading say a chicken or possibly a human. However, not much of the edge came into contact with the chopping block to be used in that manner. I'd guess it was swung back and forth like a scythe to inflict great gashes on an opponent. Another great restoration Martin and now I can add forging as another one of your skills. You and yours stay healthy and safe and I'll toast you with KC (kansas city} Bier Co, Munich style Lager. Cheers from this old retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.
thanks Bob for your comment as always much appreciated. It was actually used for beheading chickens. Stay safe over there - all the best from Martin
This was FREAKING AWESOME !!! You don't just restore you create works of art !! Wow every detail you took into consideration this is why I love your work and your channel !! Oh also I think maybe it was a axe to cut off a person head .....🤔 Great work as always !!👍👍

Martin, I don't miss any of your videos. I really like how carefully you work. Correct me if I'm wrong, this is the first time you've shown forging? It would be interesting to see your other "forged" projects.
thank you so much. Yes first time forging :)
I second that, more forging would be awesome.
Wow, so thoughtful of you to cover the welding portion. A huge applause from me. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you
thanks for watching the video :)
You are a true artisan of your craft! I can picture our old ancestors using the gigantic ax on their own farms some hundreds of years ago! Great work brother! 🙌🏼⚔️
thank you so much
Is it a farm axe, looks to thin. I wanna say executioners axe or maybe a mix. Like a slaughtering axe for livestock?
Watching a blacksmith and craftsman create his artwork is amazing. Much respect to you sir.
thanks a lot Marissa :)
Boa tarde tudo bem?

thank you so much for watching :) glad you liked it
Somewhere around Sweden or maybe in another world an old Swedish blacksmith is feeling really proud
I love that unpolished look on the whole axe except for the edge.

Another awesome restoration friend. I’m going with pig dispatcher or it was used to separate large pieces of meat. The blade looked worn down some closer to butt of the handle leads me to think it has cut som hard stuff in it’s time. Started restoring an old draw shave yesterday. Great video as always friend. 👍👍
thank you so much I really appreciate it :)
I was thinking it was used for making dozens of Julian fries.
Прекрасная работа 👍, за исключением заклёпок. Недолговечно. В остальном как всегда шикарно 👍
glad you liked it
answering your question. the axe was used to kill those birds i always hear in the background of your videos hahahaha lol. the videos this time came sooner than i expected THANKS I really enjoyed it you gave the axe a second chance. i'll be here waiting for another restoration

Great job Martin! I liked the metalworking part. Now you have a big axe! 👍
Thanks 👍
@@AwesomeRestorations I would rather see you just make something instead of polluting the legitimate resto vids. Rusty sheet metal posing as a weapon is not genuine.
As a Danish ex-patriot Viking I say..Excellent job sir! This "rare" Nordic axe was clearly designed to scallop small sweet potatoes ! And possibly to harvest wild chives. And ... I'm sure... It would taste ...just fierce ...LOL
Hejsa, den blev faktisk brugt til at kappe hovedet af kyllinger :)
loved the wood chop at the end...
my satisfaction was topped when it bit the wood...
can't have an ax with no wood...
Exactly 👍
That axe is not as old as you would have us believe. Modern standard screws, etc. Looks garage made in the last 20-30 years. You did a great job of making it look better.
Its been modified during its life with modern parts, but its old.
but it maybe was restored after the good old times
If you read the description "He told me that it has been used as a slaughter axe, to chop heads of chickens. Its maybe + 100 years old and has been *repaired along the way.*"
@@TheNismo777 lol no, i'd guess Pakistan made and cheap. You people are sheep.
@@jasoman3899 I read the description. I just disagree. It is still a good restoration regardless. I am allowed to disagree, yes?
It was used for Getting Lego blocks apart.
he he - that's a wild guess ;)

Another incredible video, and when I get a notification there is a new one, I just know I'm in for yet another treat.....awesome work......you really have some incredible talent....
Thanks so much Richard :)
one of the most difficult restorations I've seen. A curiosity of mine, which object did you most enjoy restoring? You prefer axes, guns, lighters...the old toys and zippos lighters, especially the tribute to Sean Conary. And what was the most difficult restoration to do? Hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷🙋
It's hard to say - I have restored so many fine objects I don't have a favorite
🤣 I love how most people here seem to think this was some centuries old axe, looks like something I would have made as a teen because I was board from a piece of extra metal laying around. IE the stick welded attach point and screws. Although props for taking someone’s toy and turning it into the real thing!
Was thinkin the exact same thing thats half a field disc with round bar pigeon shit tacked to it lmao
Right you are ! I don't know why people believe that it would be centuries old, when nothing points to that. People probably believe, that if it's nordic, or from Northern Sweden, it must be some remnant from the medieval ages. When everybody should see clearly, that it's a fairly new "axe", made especially to look like that, left out in the elements for a while, to rust and to look old and battered. I wouldn't be surprised if Martin built it himself and then left it out to rust for a few months or so. Definitely not "RARE", I'm sure it's the only one, made especially for this video.
i love your videos - they are so relaxing and are always stunning projects in the end! i could see your things getting featured in a museum, i would go!!
thank you so much :)
The fact that you have a fridge full of beer is cool

@@Josh_Green44 It’s a peat axe. Common before the mid 1900s.

Great video sir! My guess is that it was for chopping something rather soft, as I think that hitting anything hard would put a lot of shear stress on the rivets.
