it's not really an answer to your comment but I have a question. Did you ever experience a draw in a game? Recently I played a game and had 8vp at last turn. The player who seemed to win placed a settlement and interrupted the longest road of another player (i think he did this because it's rare and always funny to see it). The consequnece was that I got the longest road and reached 10 vp too. Who won? we're both at 10vp and the game was over but without a winner. I didn't find any information on the internet about this case so it thought it would be a great idea to ask you. Thanks for your answer and sorry for my bad english
You know it's a game of pros when it ends with everyone close to winning. The way you all could identify who the biggest threat was at each stage of the game, and gang up on them was impressive.
Actually, Catan is expertly designed to be a close finish every single game. For the most part, as long as every player is experienced…that is how it will play.
I think this illustrates very well that there are actually two games being played in Catan. The first is about strategy, resources, expansion, points, etc... The second is the social game where you try to subtly influence your opponents to take (or not take) actions by convincing them that there are greater threats than you
i try to play that social game with randoms, mostly to get robbers away from me, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But I'm really thankful when it does.
Did you watch the video? Everyone was close to winning, and he won on the last turn with a bit of luck. all the players are very experienced, and only do it to balance the game
Also, I love that you're going through the end of game stats. I have been pounding the table about how production wins games. Not always, of course, but it's the biggest factor I've seen. Unless you play badly, or someone else is very lucky, production trumps everything. Getting the meaty spots (plus a good port or two) is almost unstoppable. Even stupid sheep will win a game if played right.
Just goes to show the incredible efficiency of dev cards though, black nearly won with rolling half the resources that you did. This game is just a crazy demonstration of how ridiculously OP OWS is
26:03 so my first thought is: if we're focusing on scuppering black, what's useless to them? sheep, wood, and brick, right? so if we're porting we're porting for one of those. and it probably ought to be wood because we've got so much brick production. if we hit 5brick ONCE, that's enough brick to take longest road. if we hit 12brick we can still port for the third one. in comparison, wood production would be very slow. but on the other side of the coin: what are our outs here? our only possible way to win is longest road + city, right? three cities would be too much to ask for. there's an argument then, to hold the ore if it were possible. but with that monopoly out, I fear that holding ore - instead of trading out - is the same thing as handing it to black, especially because ore is the only stack at ?? instead of ???. better to rely on 2:1 of wheat or useless sheep - ugly as it may be - as our last minute source of ore when we have enough wheat in hand to pair with it (i.e. whenever the 10wheat hits) so, to conclude... I think I port for wood here.
At 16:31 why not use year of plenty go brick brick and get longest road and building a settlement on the 6/11 which give you 3 vps and just absolutely kills blue?
I missed the "What play should make here" part. I like to think about the decisive moments of the game and see if there is a splendid play to make. I'm also liking the moments where the first place player is dragged from their throne.
I had never even heard of Catan, but stumbled across one of your videos and cannot stop watching. Your content is absolutely great and you can tell you put a lot of time and effort into your videos. Bravo!
Getting cut off when another player have very clear better options is one of my biggest triggers - I will sometimes just take the 1 point karma hit than playing with a pos.
I gotta say I really appreciate your commentary and insight which is getting better and better with every video. I m learning a lot and it's helping me beat my friends. I only recently got into Catan but fell in love instantly and your channel is like food for my soul cos it's the best Catan content on YT.
Wow! Intense game man good job winning that. Table talk was intense this match. The turn where you were deciding to port the ore to dodge mono, I thought brick was best to hopefully get road
The game shows perfect that the in colonist io aren't unbalanced, it's just because most catan games are like 60 turns so it can happen a number gets rolled a little more than average, but the longer the game goes, the more balanced the dice are.
Not enough likes for the viewcounts - guys, leave likes on his content! It helps him out and that means content that we enjoy keeps coming and he gets appreciation he deserves! I do not want to miss out on those.
thank you dylan for your great catan content! your videos and streams have been my biggest inspiration to start playing online, joining my first tournaments and trying to improve whenever i play! something unexpected like that happened to me on sunday during the tournament qualifiers: my 2 wheat rolled which in combination with playing my third knight (=army & stealing another wheat) allowed me to city+pull a third VP for the win, when the road player after me had the guaranteed win in hand. from 4 visible VP and no 3:1 port to winning in a single turn - nobody saw that coming (including myself haha). sadly i misplayed in the top 16 semi final - again. "fast" timers can get very stressful :(
D, your strongest attribute of your gameplay is, your table talking. You are very cunning and you elegantly articulate your plans into action with your swift and sly table talk. And to further amplify that ability of yours, you use your wisdom and experience and ability to track cards to make even top tier opponents believe they are benefiting just as much as you if not more from your offers and solutions. And then there is also your keen perception of your victory conditions, and awareness to also know your opponents conditions as well, and the required strategic understanding to successfully use all of your knowledgeable foresight to formulate a game plan that will allow you the highest probability of achieving the chicken dinner!!! Truly you are a genius at Catan sir.. or colonist.io, whichever the official name is, apologies for my ignorance on that matter. And lastly, sorry for the short book, I hope you are willing to read all of my praise to you, because you deserve to hear it man. GG, and may you continue to improve until you reach the top and even still continue to improve further. I'm confident you will soon be the face of this game and you are without a doubt slowly but surely popularizing this magnificent game. Much love.
I was intrigued by the 8-5-3 (wood-brick-ore) as I notice the number of surrounding expansion spots is plentiful as it's unlikely players will want to place around the desert
I totally understand the 5-9-10 because of the production and wheat port, but I agree that the better choice was the 8-5-10. You could have gotten the wheat and ore on the way back (maybe the 8-10), and had a solid game. But you guys negotiated your way to a near tie. That was an education.
What's the point of having settlements at the "mouths" of ports, like at 16:47. Don't they only touch 1 tile? Or do you need to have the settlement to use the port? Thnx! :)
I thought 8,4 should be the first city upgrade. It will give balance to excess wheat that you produce. you were anyway going to settle on wheat port and brick port, so getting 2 bricks/2 wheats instead of 3 wheats/3 bricks wasn't going to help as much as the extra ore or the wheat.
New viewer, I’ve played catan with friends and family. The pacts or promises they are making to each other about specific moves or settlements never happen in my games. Why would these players make them? There’s no obligation to follow through?
At 26 mins, I think you’ve got to hold your Ores. There isn’t much point to go for longest road, there are no dev cards, and you can’t build any settlements. The only thing you can do next is build a city, and you have high wheat production and lower Ore.
The whole beginning was quite bizarre. @DyLighted had the exact same 5 brick + 6 lumber as Blue, the difference was Blue had 8 lumber with lumber port and @DyLighted had 10 + 9 grain. And then everyone though it was ''balance'' to give DyLighted the 8 ore with a 3x1 port... What? That was real sketchy negotiations there, they gave him the win.
Absolutely adore your videos... but now I'm getting to the point where there is no suspense because you ALWAYS win!!!! Would love to see more videos where you lose ;-)
I would port your 3 ore away for maybe a sheep or something. Black does not have the sheep port and you mentioned earlier that it is basically useless at that point in the game. The other option could maybe be to trade it with blue in hopes that they can port it all away.
@@j.prt.979 Yeah good to see it's all part of the game. I know when I play with people and am repeatedly blocked (even when blocking me isn't optimal imo) I get very salty, but it's all part of the game!

Such a high level game. For everyone to recognize black's position with only 3 visible VPs and coordinating to stop them was impressive.
117 turns? 3 hours? Holy cow, you guys really know how to shut each other down. How did you burn 102 cards? That was nuts!
Wow at this level it’s like everyone plays with their hand face up. The constant jostling for balance really made those rolls mean a lot! What a game!
