Using the year of plenty for wood to get the wheat port at 13:36 was definitely the right move, as it's a really strong port for a high wheat board and you wouldn't want to lose the race to Hawkeye. However, I was personally rooting for Hawkeye in this game, so I was hoping you'd let him get the port haha.
Three years later and I found this video. It's great to see how far things have come. Even with the basic graphics I am learning a lot. The wheat port would be my move too.
I like it when you show the end of game stats. In this case the dice stats show how 4, 5, and 6 absolutely dominated 8, 9, and 10, which led to a big resource differential between you and gray vs. blue and green. I think you were well positioned, but had the dice been more balanced things would have been interesting.

4:31 Personally I would rather have the 5 9 10 with wood and ore since it gets you good production of wood with a close 3:1 port along with a pairing for a longest road game if grey doesn't cut you off. I am influenced though since my 2 most recent games were longest road wins. 13:37 I would try to trade for either woods or wheat and try to get both the settlement on the wheat port and the city 19:30 I would wait longer on the monopoly until there were more wheats on the board or there were enough ores to have two cities/multiple dev cards, so I'd probably play the knight instead
4:34 IDK 13:38 I would year of plenty for 2 wood, road settlement to the wheat port, 4:1 ore for wheat and buy 2 dev cards. 19:32 I would play the knight onto the 8 ore and buy another dev card with wheat trades. yooooo apparently I'm 66% a Catan pro just by watching these vids! But fr awesome work keep it up great video!
The way you explain Catan is how a math teacher expects someone to show their work on a math test and pretty soon your math test becomes less math and more essay
I’ll try to add more segments of table talk next time! I think the optimal length of a UA-cam video is 10, 20, or 30 minutes. I try not to go over 30 minutes since it can get less views, but I’ll see what I can do.
4:37. I'd go with Option 2. Here's the strengths I see in that setup. 1) Groundhog said that with so much ore and wheat on the board, there will be less fighting for longest road. Option 2 also gets you in on that longest road game with room for expansion along the right side of the board. You only need one more settlement over there to get your wood and bricks roughly equal. 2) This longest road potential doesn't come at the cost of city building potential; the 6-3-5 is relatively balanced ore-wheat for city building later on. 3) If we're expanding on the right hand side of the board, the brick port is within pretty easy reach, which means we only *have* to trade for 1-2 sheep before having a backdoor sheep source of our own. Option 1 does have some things going for it. Coordinated ore and sheep, plus plenty of wheat, implies that you could play OWS with those spots. But "plenty of wheat" may in this case be too much of it. 10 dots of wheat vs 4 of ore and sheep, on a board where everyone has wheat access, means that if Blue can beat you to the wheat port, you have a bunch of wheat production and nowhere to offload it. And then there's the 9 brick with zero access to wood. Despite the coordinated 5-ore and 5-sheep, the rest of the resources here aren't really in harmony, especially compared to Option 2.
Okay! First one was a little off, let's see if we can think this second one (13:42) through better. Blue is two wood and one brick away from taking the wheat port. Given how much brick you have, gray is probably holding a lot of wood right now. At minimum 1, possibly 2. Feeding blue the settlement seems possible next turn, especially with everyone being able to see how many cards you have or seeing you get a bunch of cities/devcards. If you buy a settlement, you have awkward leftovers. 1 brick, 3 sheep, 1 wheat, 6 ore. Still way over robber levels, but without much you can build directly. But you can convert this into two devcards if you're willing to 4:1. What are we drawing for? Road building gives us the "cut off Gray" plan. VPs and Knights are win condition, Monopolies are good, YoP is good... OK, so devcards are actually useful here. Building a city here means... compared to the port settlement, you get more sheep and more brick. Do you need either right now? I think it's fine to wait a turn. If you don't buy both devcards right away, you'll still be sitting on 40% of a city if you 4:1'd the ore, and 60% of a city if you didn't. And the remainder should be easy to get; you have a 7/8 chance of producing a double wheat or double ore before next turn. So yeah. Buy the devcard first, in case it changes things (Road Building etc). Then YoP for wood, build wheatport, and... actually I don't think you buy the second devcard. You tempt fate a *little* with being at 8 cards but you can discard the brick (less important now) and three ore in the 1/2 of games where it happens, instead of guaranteeing a loss of 3 ore by trading it now. As mentioned before, you have a 3/4 chance of producing double wheat before your next turn, and only a 1/3 chance of producing ore.
Wow! Well said! These are honestly my favorite comments to read. When I can actually see my viewers engaging with my work and critically thinking! You have a pretty good point on 4:1 ore is really painful, but since I was just trying to buy development card to defend myself I think it's a bit more acceptable here.
Great video as always. Generally speaking using mono when it greatly improves your hand is correct, but you also have to consider you are stripping your opponents of those cards as well. Clearly using mono to prevent your opponent from winning on their turn or next couple turns is a correct play, but I am wondering if there are other circumstances where using it to hinder your opponents is correct (maybe to solidify a winning position?).
I responded to another comment above with a very similar question. There’s still a bunch more on the monopoly but I didn’t have time to cover it in this video. Basically you can monopoly a specific person if they are VERY far ahead or about to win. You can use monopoly both offensively and defensively. In this video I was focusing on how to maximize value for yourself instead of hurting opponents. However, there are situations where you want to be playing it to simply slow an opponent down.
19:30 I'd play a knight, not a good enough position for monopoly I think. Need to get those knights on the board as well. Getting a second city would be nice but I'd probably wait to get two cities in one turn.
I would buy a dev card first. If it’s a knight, then I would play the other knight. If not, I will just pass my turn since I only want my rock and wheat to be open to be ready for a monster mono. Good video dylighted ! I have been playing on colonist since the Corona and I appreciate all your content. Keep up ;)
Although I normally like to have sufficient wood and brick for roads, I think the black set up is better. The 2:1 wheat is just too tempting and the blue player won't be in a position to get a free road, so taking 5-9-10 second means the race is on. Then 9-2 and 6-3 should be the next goals, in parallel with city-ing up. On average, in such 'side-doughnut' configurations it pays to settle near the hole as it gives you more room for expansion. Buy two wood, get the 2:1 port and 2 dev cards. It is the safest bet long term. Wouldn't play dev card just yet. I'd be buying roads to get to 4-11 and then 6-3.
Wow you look way different than what I had in mind! Think I've seen all the videos haha, so it's strange to see you finally on the screen. Anyway, you say you only want to post the best content, and I understand that... Buutt... I wouldn't mind seeing some weaker content. This was the face reveal video I made. ua-cam.com/video/V22I-36Cm6M/v-deo.html . I think most of my viewers liked it, but unfortunately it didn’t get promoted much in the UA-cam Algorithm.
@@DyLightedCatan I'm subbed and I just checked your page and I've seen literally every video but that one =\ Weird how UA-cam didn't show me that! Especially because I really enjoyed a little bit of story telling. That was a good video. "But you have more cards than him!" LOL.
It feels so good to say what I would do out loud to myself then hear you say the same thing. I'm a little new to the game so it's very reassuring to know I do some stuff right. Plus here's a comment for the algorithm lol
Thank Reed! Picking up the city certainly helped me a lot, along with getting the wheat port. Without those 2, I don't think I could have succeeded as hard I did.
i mean, when you mention that they will call your mono out, they should've in this game already, 4 devs and not removing the robber from his own hex? extremely sus, RB would not have been worth it, YoP as well, 4 vp's? no way in hell. so it's a mono.
I was about to comment the same thing, but I decided to search first in the comments to avoid duplicating the argument. Once upon a time (early 2020) this would be an easy task, with only half a dozen comments below each DyLighted's video. Now I had to scroll down through 371 comments!
This kindof content clearly took alot more time to produce, but it is really great. I'd love to see some more produced game breakdowns if you ever find the time
I love the content but i just can't help but laugh when someone sells their soul to Raid. I get it, you need money to pay the bills but i've seen their script and it's so sad plus the script doesn't describe their game at all.
Thanks Brian! I'm glad you enjoy my stuff! I actually had to write my own script and edit it myself. While there were certain parts/notes I had to say, I mostly had creative freedom when producing the ad.
11:58 - why not year of plenty for 2 wood & build 2 roads towards the 10 8? This way you get the guaranteed wheat port, which is crucial for your setup. The second road may even help you get to the 8 ore and even if not, it’s a small price to pay in comparison.
Thanks for the video it was great. I personally am a huge fan of the 2/1 port and see so many wins attributable to this. Obviously you need the perfect board to pull it off, but its so powerful when it works. I would like to see you streaming more. I get a lot out of watching the other guys streaming and watching how they make decisions in real time.
I’m going to start streaming soon! Once it’s Black Friday, I’m going to get a PC and I can stream. Right now with the laptop, it’s hard for me to stream in high quality. About the 2:1 port, the 2:1 makes it so you can make more decision. If you’re a good player, then you can make more and better decisions.
This was such an epic game, as soon as you got that wheat port it was basically game over. Your set up was absolutely monstrous! Can't wait for the next vid!
Your patience on using the monopoly was quite amazing. I would of used it at least a few rounds earlier to solidify my lead and have more dev cards to protect my tiles. Overall well played on getting 18 wheats in hand!
Thank you Richard! I think Mono is one of the hardest cards to play correctly, and it requires a deep understanding of the game. It’s very hard to resist monopolying when you know you’re going to get a lot, but if it’s a wet board you have to trust in future opportunities.
My idea at the 14 minute mark was to get the 2 wood from the year of plenty, to build two roads. Could even then trade 4 ore to get another wood to make a city still at the 3:1 port in the same turn. But your idea was probably better and more efficient on material.
Thanks for Video, always Fun. Small correction: At 21:54 you say "Gray has 2 Ore". I've been using these videos to practice tracking cards, I'm confident he only has 1 at this point, and only 4 are out, not the five you thought.
great video! Your plays were of course strategic and all but you were also pretty lucky to get monopoly and the year of plenty in the beginning! Would have loved to hear the table talk of everyone when they saw you with 18 wheat in what had to be a crushing turn. Can't wait for more!
I totally agree with you. The YoP was nice and THEN the monopoly. It couldn’t have been better. I think as soon as I monopolied they knew it was over. Next time I’ll try to include more bits and pieces of the table talk!
I was wondering at 11:58 when you said you had to hold, is it possible to year of plenty two wood? Drop roads around the 10, secure the port, cut blue off, and if possible build towards the 8 ore? I was thinking this could help because nobody would be feeding blue to race you to the port.
I think this is the first time I'd seen your face. You look a lot younger and I don't know why that surprised me. Btw love your content. Keep up all the good work as it is really nice to have CATAN content on UA-cam to be able to put on while I'm drawing and stuff.
This is the second time I put my face on video. The first one was this video. ua-cam.com/video/V22I-36Cm6M/v-deo.html . Thank you! I’m so glad I could entertain ya while you do your art!
I always apply real world concepts whenever I play Catan. There is this negotiation principle where you have to leverage the other person into believing they need what you have. This can be seen in sales. This is also achieved by simply asking "Hey, what do you need'? I also apply a lot of economic principles to the game such as Aggregate Supply and Comparative Advantage. These two principles have a little to do with distribution of resources, or at least that's what I use them for in game.
I'm somewhat late to the party, but @17:20 you could've used monopoly on wheat and build a Settlement on the 12-9 or the 11-4 spot. Eight wheat for two roads and three for the settlement.
Scrapped is something I started working on it but never finished. Basically that video really underperformed on my channel and I barely made any money from it. Since this is my full time job, I have to make content that will pay the bills.
I've watched a number of your videos and the analysis you perform on your matches is stunning, and your mastery of this game is clear. If you somehow ever got bored of Catan, I'm sure you would be successful applying your analytical mind to other games. Great work!
Thanks Hunter! I’ve been wanting to make an AmongUs Strategy channel since there isn’t really one out there, but I don’t want to split too much time to it. I’m also a bit afraid that the game (Among Us) like Fall Guys is going to die out.

Haha well done! Great decision making! Thanks for taking the courage to comment and try the quiz! I appreciate it!
The way you explain Catan is how a math teacher expects someone to show their work on a math test and pretty soon your math test becomes less math and more essay
Anyone else would like to hear the table talk? That's really valuable
I’ll try to add more segments of table talk next time! I think the optimal length of a UA-cam video is 10, 20, or 30 minutes. I try not to go over 30 minutes since it can get less views, but I’ll see what I can do.
Seriously such quality content! Keep it up man! I love the pausing at decision points, makes these such better videos for improving play!
I really Like your vids. Your a huge Help when i play Catan.
Thank you Mikkel! I appreciate your support and comment! It also helps the video do better!
Me, who doesn't even know how to play Catan: *Interesting*
I know the rules but can't claim I know how to play *shrugs
you are seriously the best tip giver for any game ive ever seen on youtube, thank you for getting me into SoC
@@DyLightedCatan Exactly, sometimes momentum is of great importance, especially on some low production boards :)
Love the quality, edits, and techniques!!!!
Thanks! I’m glad you’re able to notice all the work that goes behind making these videos! I appreciate the kind words you leave behind!
Keep up ;)
Thank you both for all your support! Great analysis on both of your ends :)
Great video Dylan,
Very educative and still extremely entertaining. Keep it up man, you keep improving and I can't help but to keep wachting ;)
Thanks Stephan! I’m only going to try and make my videos better and better! Thanks for sticking around!
Great comment and good analysis! I love seeing my viewers thinking and putting their thoughts in the comment section!
Keep em coming DyLighted! We can really tell you put so much into these video and it will surely pay off!
Thank you Trenton! I’m glad my effort shows! Thank you for validating me and my work! I appreciate it a lot.
When is the next video coming out?
I just posted!
Awesome video! Wouldn't have known about online Catan if it wasn't for your videos
Thanks! I think I’ve popularized online Catan a lot. I’m glad to see that I can bring you here :)
Wow you look way different than what I had in mind! Think I've seen all the videos haha, so it's strange to see you finally on the screen.
Anyway, you say you only want to post the best content, and I understand that... Buutt... I wouldn't mind seeing some weaker content. Like a series of games against randoms with a little bit of commentary. Maybe you don't want to do that and maybe you don't have the time for it, just letting you know that I would be liking those videos too ;)
Haha people tell me I project a skinny white guy voice 🤣. Part of the Raid Shadow Legend sponsorship requirements were that I had to show my face.
Also, I don’t think you’ve seen this video!
Thank you! Glad I could help you out!
Commenting to help the algorithm.
Appreciate it 2nd Gen!
Dang what a crush. You had that game locked up from placements honestly. Nice vid, great mono tips
Thank Reed! Picking up the city certainly helped me a lot, along with getting the wheat port. Without those 2, I don't think I could have succeeded as hard I did.
I will just comment to help you rise your colonist army
Thank you! Every comment helps!
You are the reason I started playing Catan again, and actually winning! Ps, these videos are also great to fall asleep to. Double benefit I guess
i mean, when you mention that they will call your mono out, they should've in this game already, 4 devs and not removing the robber from his own hex? extremely sus, RB would not have been worth it, YoP as well, 4 vp's? no way in hell. so it's a mono.
In this game they did call my mono out pretty early. At that point where I talked about dirty mono, I think they already knew I had a mono.
I totally agree! Once I had the wheat port I felt like I was pretty unstoppable. It was a key element of my success!
13:15 I kinda like the idea of building the city, YoP for wood, and cutting off grey
Keep it up DyLighted! Love your content! Greetings from the Netherlands!
Thanks Bram, will do! Hello to the Netherlands!
Nice content as always! Installing that game for you... It's not really my type but you deserve all the help
Thanks for the awesome videos! They have really improved my games with friends
And thank you for watching my videos! I couldn’t have done it without viewers like you!
My idea at the 14 minute mark was to get the 2 wood from the year of plenty, to build two roads. Could even then trade 4 ore to get another wood to make a city still at the 3:1 port in the same turn. But your idea was probably better and more efficient on material.
Really love your contend. I can see how my game improved after watching your videos. Keep it up!
Glad you're getting sponsors!
Thank you! It’s the first big leap into being able to support myself!
DyLighted: Sorry, I know that was a long turn with a lot of explanation.
Me: THIS IS THE CONTENT I SEEK, MASTER!
Wow, you've doubled in subscribers since the last time I watched. Congratulations, you earned it!
If anyone deserves sponsors! It's you Dy!! Congrats!
Thank you Aditya! ❤️ I appreciate the kind words!
Thanks for Video, always Fun. Small correction: At 21:54 you say "Gray has 2 Ore". I've been using these videos to practice tracking cards, I'm confident he only has 1 at this point, and only 4 are out, not the five you thought.
Thanks George. I thought I went back to make sure there weren’t any tracking errors, but I believe you. It looks like I might’ve made a mistake
haha my man has made it with that Raid ad! Amazing video, keep it up!
❤️❤️❤️ and it couldn't have been done without you! Thank you for always watching my videos!
great video!
I was thinking this could help because nobody would be feeding blue to race you to the port.
going into my first tournament this weekend. wish me luck, your videos really help.
I love this channel, wish it had more!! been playing on colonists tons
13:36 you definetly go for the wheat prot either by trading or by using the year of plenty and then you see if you can do other thigns after that
This was really interesting to watch. Greetings from Croatia!
Hello to Croatia! Glad I’m getting viewers from across the world!
Great plays. I only play with a group of friends and some beers every 3 months or so but seeing the thought process behind pro play is pretty awesome
watched all the way through, awesome stuff dylan, you really have me 10x as focused compared to my university lectures LOL
Nice voice, nice analysis, detailed guide
Can't waiting to see your video dude
Hopefully I didn’t disappoint you! I spent an extra long time on this video!
Really great video dylan thanks for the excellent explanations
Good video, great content and an improvement from the last one when you were cutting to alternate player views - this is easier to follow; thanks
Thank you Haba! I appreciate the feedback and won’t be trying to do multiple perspectives.
This is an amazing educational video!!! Learned so much thank you!
13:45 year of plenty for a stone and a wood to get a city then trade for another wood to build a setelment
The quality of edits and content has skyrocketed 10/10
Thank you! I wouldn’t have been able to do it without everyone’s support, and that means you!
I never post comments or like videos, but I love Catan and would love to see videos posted more frequently!
Thank you man! I really try to post as often as possible, it’s just that editing takes forever! I’ll keep working hard and pushing out more videos!
great vid! I've been waiting for it
Great video! Would love to see “My first tournament part 2” that you “scrapped”!
Scrapped is something I started working on it but never finished. Basically that video really underperformed on my channel and I barely made any money from it. Since this is my full time job, I have to make content that will pay the bills.
@@DyLightedCatan I really enjoyed part 1 but i completely understand, looking forward to the next part of this $500 series!
Option 2 to start of with. Those two woods spots and the possibility of capturing two clay with that port so nearby would be the best option.
I've been waiting for this video for so long haha. Wp and monster monoply play.
Thank you Gareth! More will be coming soon!
Great video. You really helped me improve my Catan skills.
Thanks for commenting Goldberg! That’s what my channel is about! I love to see others learn and grow. Thank you for watching and supporting me :)
