The Black Hills and the Badlands have always been a special place for me. When I was younger and stupid and had everything I owned stuffed into my car to move out West, I stopped at the Badlands, and that's where the magnitude of what I was doing hit me. The prairies are so open that they almost force you to fill them with your own emotions. I felt like I poured my heart into those hills. But they get overlooked a lot because they're not as openly inviting as the mountains and forests. It's almost a shame, but at the same time that landscape has felt like my personal secret for years. I'm so happy to see you guys give this space the love it deserves.
WOW, that is so eloquently said and I think you will really like the next episode as it is really near and dear to us as we had a similar experience in the Badlands! It is such a wild, harsh, but special place that seems to infiltrate your soul
Its virtually impossible to find content ion UA-cam that has serious environmental values and down to earth vibes. I appreciate the true nature of your videos and how real you both feel. It's refreshing to see individuals who are so human, so willing to show the world who you are. I am at awe with the scenery you capture. Looking at them speaks to my soul on a deeper level. Keep going, keep exploring, keep on keeping the vibe so real and down to earth.
Your time lapse shots of the Milky Way were awesome. You travel to so many diverse places, yet the sky is the same beautiful, awe-inspiring entity wherever the skies are dark. Keep those images coming!
Your intros are so cool! We got to see a lone mountain goat backlit on the top of a peak on our Cathedral Spires hike. Also for anyone who likes the historical stuff so by the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs just south of Custer SP. It's an active dig site and you can watch them slowly digging out bones!
Just drove through the area in Winter after picking up our rig in Seattle. Lots and Lots of Snow. Was absolutely beautiful. Love the new series. So serene.
I am a new viewer of your channel and really digging the way you guys format everything, you both have very good eyes and tell down to earth stories. A breath of fresh air. I recently was in this area again after about 20 years and this time viewed it through the lens of indigenous peoples... He Sapa (The Black Hills) was stolen from Lakota people and many of their origin stories begin at what is now Wind Cave National Park. The next time you visit, I recommend taking it all in with these perspectives. I hope you watched the videos of the four elders that spoke about these origin stories in the visitor center, it is a good place to start. So glad you did not visit Mt. Rushmore, which let's be honest is just a slap in the face... four men who all hated indigenous people and did everything in their power to eliminate them carved into rock on stolen (and very sacred) land. Really looking forward to the rest of the series, actually found you guys because I am hoping to go to Voyageurs and Isle Royale again next summer. Have a feeling I am going to be digging through your full catalog!
Thanks for the kind words. We spend a great deal of time ingesting stories and information about the native people of North America. Its so sad to realize how little we have been taught, how much white washing there has been and how far out of your way you have to learn about the indigenous people. This series was made a little over two years ago, and this year we dove in deep and have been listening to audio books and going to museums to do our best to fill our knowledge gaps so we can do these stories justice in the future. We like to take out time and really learn and ingest something before we recount it for others to be sure we are spreading accurate information. But the more we know, the more we want to know. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series and the rest of our work. We feel very lucky to make these things.
Love ❤Love❤Love❤ It !! Thank you ! I spent 6 weeks up there a couple years ago . So cool , got intimate with the Bison in Custer at dusk .... hung around Pactola & Sheridan lake , cause it got hot. Wandered up to Spearfish etc. Gotta go back , The Sioux indian Tribe , My 1st book report in 4th grade~peace~
We went there to climb actually! We learned to tower climb in the black hills years ago but sadly the rock was too hot this time around due to the heat wave!
Both North and South Dakota should give you some of their advertising dollars! You do such a great job showcasing those beautiful places! I'm heading back through there in 3-4 months and can't wait. Cheers from the PNW!
I wish! I'd love to work with some tourism boards. We have another project we are wanting to do in a specific state and I am hoping to get the tourism board on for the project. I will have to do a little research to figure out how to get my foot in the door there ;)
You guys have a great product/project! The format is great with your custom advertising and still meeting sponsorship demand’s during your video, (both pros & cons). It is very refreshing that your videos don’t dwell on the latest and greatest, and gimmicks! Thank you! The variety of activities on your adventures is incredible, and your attention to detail both large and small is very uniquely refreshing. Your photography (both stills and video) is beyond all other back road or back country productions we follow! The laid back (no dedicated deadline) schedule is also very refreshing and relaxing! It is a real go with the flow production of what you find along the way (from a new swimming hole, to a buffalo traffic jam.😂😅 We wait for your next video with anticipation! Thank you!
You are so kind to say that! It is tough to find a happy medium. To get the support we need to make these videos to our standards while also making something that our brand partners are excited about. It is a fun challenge and we are happy with where we've landed on it ;)
We finally got into service to be able to watch episode 1 tonight!! AMAZING! Not sure if you remember but we’re the ones who left the note for you in the UP. Can’t wait to watch the rest of this series!
@@BoundForNowhere we can’t wait!! Your content has always been great but these last 2 videos…🔥🔥🔥 The quality is just outstanding!!! I’ve been looking forward to this series and you both kept hitting home runs! We tried for several years to make late day tours of Wind Cave from our home in Lawrence, KS, always arriving after they’d sold out the day’s tickets! Argh! We did finally make the tour on our return trip from Waterton Lakes NP & Glacier NP back in 2016. Throughly enjoyed Custer and Wind Cave! I have to say I’m excited for the next episode as I’m guessing the Badlands has a similar effect on you as it did me. Awaking to photograph sunrise and hiking to a remote spot for sunset was worth every second! I sadly haven’t been back due to health issues but those are largely behind me so it’s time to plan an adventure!
Took the family on vacation to the south west corner of South Dakota back in 2016. It was a great trip and we saw so much cool stuff. Black Elk Peak, Custer state park. Wow, thanks! Yes Jackson is really talented and we were very picky with who we worked with on this. It’s important to us that who ever we add to our team that they only elevate what we are doing ❤️ and he absolutely does
South Dakota is actually quite the amazing state with a lot to offer. we were in all those areas just last year and I want to go back and explore more! Great vid guys!
Happy to see another good video 👌 even the donkey is happy and he’s smiling 😂. The only animal is not happy is the bison 😂. Love the way he’s looking at you hahahaha!
The Hills was one location for the filming of Starship Troopers - Location shooting for Starship Troopers in Hell's Half Acre (a county park west of Casper, Wyoming) and the Badlands of South Dakota began in March 1996 and lasted four long months.

Wow you really did miss us by a few days! Glad you got out to enjoy the place despite the heat! It can be so oppressive! But yes Bison are really something! Glad you were able to track them down!
If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend a visit to the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Oklahoma. It is 39,650 acres and is the largest remaining tallgrass prairie in the world, owned by The Nature Conservancy. There are approximately 2,500 bison on the preserve, located in north central Oklahoma. Sorry, no burrow, prairie dogs, or antelope but it is very cool to see the bison on that tallgrass prairie. Plus, there is no admission charge.
As always, Mak & Owen, an outstanding video. If I can make one request please, if possible, can the on-screen explanation cards be up a little longer? Please & Thanks
Great views from the top of South Dakota! Remember hiking back in 2007 with its old name, need to look up when the switch happened. Fun to watch this episode. Drive any pig tail bridges in Custer?
I just found your channel on episode 1 of this series and I’m so so glad I did. You both are so inspiring in your storytelling and filmmaking ☺️ I was wondering, randomly enough, where you buy your hats? I’ve been wanting one for a while but don’t know what to search 😅
Well we are so happy to have you along for the ride! As for the hats the one Owen is wearing is made by Kuhl and is this one: bit.ly/3ZQq2si Then there is a Pacifico hat that I wear a few times but otherwise the hat I wear most is one I designed and sold on our website... been meaning to design a new one as the hats are a lot of fun to make!
Beautiful video, we traveled there last summer! I wondered if the new/reinstated youtube filming rules in National Parks came into play with your filming at Wind Cave (or if you got the permit-what was that like?).
I’m really glad you brought up the Buffalo Round-Up because I actually remember it bring discussed on some PBS Kids programming when I was growing up (Postcards from Buster), so it’s cool to know where exactly it is given that my memory of a show 20 years ago isn’t that great 😅. Also an honest question: roughly how many patches do you have on your ceiling, and how much spaces is left for them?
Hahha no way! We’ll look at us bringing grade school knowledge full circle. Actually, that makes me really proud! I’d love to see that round up sometime!
Fantastic!! I really enjoyed this episode as well. What part of the year were you there?? My wife and I will be truck camping there in June. We're really hoping to not have those type of high temps.
Yeah this is the backcountry ultra light one and this it doesn’t have that feature. I almost always carry a lighter, but the early start caught me off guard this morning
5:44, "And that guy: not really sure what he's up to." It's called the Flehmen response. He's caught a whiff of a smell he really likes...probably a female.
@@BoundForNowhere Yea, um, I had photographed that response on a bison at Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and one of the volunteers informed me what it's about. Really enjoy the vids. Thanks! Hoping to do likewise some day.
This was filmed last summer long before the permits… and we are not filming without a permit… even though it’s a completely terrible rule that we really hope won’t stand for long
@@BoundForNowhere thank you so much for your quick reply. I spent a week in Arches Utah in February and had the place practically to myself but resisted the urge to film. A magnificent week lost really because I was alone. The filming regs are whack. Cheerio
You guys are outdoors enough where you should have the ability to make fire no matter what. Sorry to be that guy but, you really should know better. A day hike doesn't always stay a day hike, emergency equipment is for every time you step foot in the wilderness. Fire should be a redundancy, you should have several ways to start a fire, If you're going to vlog and inspire others (which you clearly do,) please rectify safety mistakes like this one.
Dang dude, just let them be. How many survival videos are on UA-cam with trained experts going into the wild and 1 day in they realize they forgot something or the thing they brought to make fire isn't working. Have you seen Alone? This was a light morning hike, not a cross-country hike into the bush.
@@tidbit19 ok poser. a trained expert has redundancies, not one way of making fire. you're exactly who I'm talking about. You think it's "ok" to make mistakes because you saw some idiot do it on youtube.

So we're all just continuing to film in National Parks without a permit until they make us stop? asking for a friend.
Cheerio
Anyway to remove the Includes paid promotion tag taking up space in the video? So annoying!
Another great adventure! Thanks for sharing. 👍🤗
