Matter Splatter Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy has an inaccessible area where developers left a lot of interesting things out in space. It's unknown if these were beta assets or if the level used to be longer, but today we're heading out of bounds into deep space to take a closer look at this Super Mario Galaxy mystery!

Maybe that Lone Magikoopa actually did carry out his duty, he was so efficient with his magic, he made that one area never actually exist in the first place and turned it into content the developers never felt like making
Hi
Haven't seen a comment from you in a while.
..... (why are you EVERYWHERE)
Hello future Justin Y. I'm glad you enjoy commenting so much, I do too!
@@christinekatzman2164 even though u only have 1 comment on this channel lol
Something neat about the Matter Splatter planets is that they're actually fully modelled areas. You don't get to see the full model by normal means but it does look really nice.
Hi
@Keebe The Kirby plush no is not but it's the anti Piracy Super Mario Galaxy Guy
Hey I know you! You’re the Super Mario Galaxy Anti-Piracy Guy!
It's the lego marvel top 3 glitches guy
even matter splatter mansion?
Mario Galaxy came out over 13 years ago and we're still discovering new and fascinating things about it
13 years ago!?
So true. I love this game! 😊
Same with 64
I bet the sourcecode leak will show us more in this direction
this made me feel old
I guess it’s appropriate that this part of the level is partially gone, given the theme of the galaxy.
That lost magic Koopa is literally the "will prank ____ when they get back" meme
Will prank mario once he arrives!

Matter Splatter Galaxy is one of the Galaxies that always lingered with me long after I finished it.... The relaxing, peaceful, yet mysterious music... And the gameplay with the tiny little dots which bounce across the void of space, creating your path, if only for a short time... Amazing...

i think you're in the wrong website mate
The matter splatter background also appears in the ghost galaxy's secret star, which always made me think these galaxies were one and the same. After all, 10 different galaxies all have the same skybox showing Mario's world, so maybe more galaxies are connected
It was like this galaxy in every way. Now that that’s being brought, maybe Mario went through a wormhole?
Maybe it’s some kind of Trickster comet?
Magikoopa:
Here in the dark void,
Let's play a game,
I'll show you how it's done,
Here in the dark void,
Float very still,
This'll be so much fun,
Mario smiled,
That's what I'm after,
The smile in his eyes,
The sound of his laughter,
Happy to listen,
Happy to play,
Happily watching him drift away,
Happily waiting,
Night after night,
Inside this endless void,
Counting the pixels,
Floating alone,
Without just a single noise,
Happily waiting,
Night after night,
Is this how it works?
Am I doing this right?
Happy to float and,
Happy to stay,
Happily watching him drift away,
You keep on casting magic,
For people who don't care,
People who don't care,
About you,
And still it takes you ages,
To see that no one's there,
See that no one's there,
See that no one's there,
Everyone's fought on without you,
Finally something,
Finally news,
About the roll I should fill,
SwankyBox found me,
Out here in the void,
With no Mario to kill,
Was I a beta?
Was I a tool?
Was I japed again?
Was I just a fool to have,
Happily waited,
Happily stayed,
Happily watching them drift,
Drift,
Drift away...
Wat
I get the reference ;-;
This is one crossover I never expected to see
I don't understand that reference
Gimme the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n' ro-
Oh, wait, wrong "Drift Away", sorry.
I like to think Matter Splatter Galaxy is the way it is due to how distant it is in the Mario Universe. It’s the final level in the game in terms on unlocking, on the outer reaches of the universe. In terms of space, it would be the oldest point chronologically in the game. It would also be the most mysterious as a result. Perhaps this place was one of the first areas to be inhabited by creatures in the Mario Universe. Over time however, the physics of the area began to fall apart, forcing the people of this galaxy to leave. Just a theory.
I always thought it was connected to the ghost galaxy, as there is a secret star that has the same skybox. My idea is that some event happened to the planet, which caused it to dissolve and some region of near by space became full of the souls of those who died. The only problem with my theory would be distance, except 9 different galaxies plus Rosalina's observatory have Mario's planet as the background, which suggests they are the same. So maybe the ghost galaxies and Matter Splatter are connected.
just a tiny correction: melty molten is actually the last in terms of dome unlocking, with 52 stars required whereas i believe matter splatter needed 48, but i agree that either way matter splatter is probably a better way to end the game
@@arcticdino1650 wdym by mario's planet as the background? that's technically rosalina's planet (gateway cuz that's where it first appears).
the one that i think ur talking about (peach's castle gardens or the star festival) has a different background with more purple in it. its the other default background for the game
A lone fighter with a physically magical weapon, forced to spend an eternity waiting in a galaxy located in an area called "The Garden", awaiting the arrival of somebody who will in truth never return? Interesting…
Sounds farmilliar
Is it possible to see what the layout of the galaxy looks like with all the matter where it should be?
the background always terrified me, and while it is a amazing place, it was always too hard for me as a child
Matter Splatter is one of the most satisfying galaxies
I've been watching this for three weeks. Highly recommend.

I'm loving that we have more Galaxy videos lately. This one was rlly interesting, as ever, bc there's just something about things 'lost in the void' in SMG, since it's themed in space anyway
There is something I would like to see you look at in Mario Galaxy as I have not been able to get fly hacks to work. I also posted this on the last video but it wasn't worded very well.
So basically I was messing around in the first boss fight using the glitch to make it deactivated, and I saw a strange grassy planet in the distance. One viewer told me it was from the beta of Mario Galaxy, and I looked into it, and it definitely is. Like I said I don't have any editors for the game so I am unsure if anything resides there.
If you want to see it I recorded a short video about it. This is on 3d all stars so I will try to use my WiiU to record it on the actual disc as soon as possible.
Oh, yeah. Just checked out the one you posted on the 18th. One thing you need to make sure, though:
Is the planet you start on in that star also visible from megaleg?
If it isn't, then that means the planet you're looking at is the low-poly version of the original.
The planet was originally grassy, so they likely didn't update the texture for the low-poly model after changing it.
@@FlowMH you can, you just have to stand in a weird spot. I can reboot the mission and show it off real quick.
@@FlowMH Alright it's on the channel now
@@Goomba456 It seems to be in the same spot as the starting planet (look very closely, they're in the same spot to the right of megaleg).
This is very likely to be the low-poly model (not just the texture, since the props on the planet differ) for that planet, which wasnt updated when they overhauled it to look metallic. This seems to already have been discovered roughly 9 years ago but still interesting nonetheless!
@@FlowMH oh, really? Can you tell me where that was? I never found anything.
Swanky could talk about a well-known thing in SMG (2) and I'd still watch and enjoy it.

An idea: That unseen magikoopa is actually the one who launched Mario into the abyss at the very beginning of the game. He's been hiding so we cant get our revenge
The Galaxy games had good names for stages "Matter Splatter" reminds me of "Climger Winger" or "Intruder Excluder" from Battletoads.
I don't remember ever playing this galaxy... then again, if it has the spring mushroom, I probably suppressed it. Was never able to figure out how to control that thing.
Please SwankyBox, keep making these awesome videos! Specially about SMG!
I have to wonder if you killed every magikoopa (including the out of bounds one) would the stage stop being deleted
Well wow! I loved playing this level and I was always excited to get to it and it is interesting that there is an unused area (5th section).
It's pretty cool you're still finding these! I'm biased, I know, but the game's theme of wonder is reinforced with discoveries like these.
Dude, I seriously love your videos. You are one of my favorite UA-camrs for sure. As I've said many times. Your use of adjectives is genius.
Hey Swanky, there are secret 1 ups in Mario galaxy 2 that I haven’t seen documented yet. It’s in Yoshi Star Galaxy, in the first mission, on the planet with smaller floating rocks around it.
You normally access the planet in mission 2 but it lacks the 1 ups. I think it was originally a bonus area for mission 1 but got scrapped.
Woah so wired. Great catch 👍, and I always think that matter splatter had more to explore in it.
Me when i watch a swankybox video: *wait what thats cool*
Thank you for the episode.
I remember trying to pass matter splatter galaxy. It was hard to pass and i actually passed the level and the whole entire super mario galaxy and unlocking luigi and getting the 121st star.
2:10 maybe an scp?
I love being subscribed to smart, inquisitive game devs like you. By being so I learn new things most every week.
i like these game discovery videos a lot pls continue
The destruction was caused by the Magickoopa accidentaly making him and the entire world travel trought the 4th dimension. As the world only disappeares by half, the Magickoopa travled into an parralel universe.
if i make a game, im leaving thousands of scrapped assets and give them really specific names and content just for Swanky to find, only to realize it's just a curiosity feeder
Gosh this video really MATTERS
Almost said scrap trap there
This is a very good video. Keep up with the good work
Why doesnt this guy have past 1 million we need to help him
I wonder what'd happen to this channel when he covered every of those deleted areas, game mysteries, etc.
Finally videos thare aren't phone scale and 0:45 seconds long again!
Perhaps the magikoopa is not out there by mistake, but instead has entered a time of self exile so that if Mario were to kill the others, he could continue to be the arcane conduit for the ritual they all worked so hard to cast upon this galaxy. So long as he shall live, the spell will never be broken. The matter will continue to splatter. And he shall forever be the last magikoopa who broke this galaxy, now living alone as its sole resident and ruler.
I was wondering about the skyboxes change the entire time seeing if he would bring it up
I wonder how much effect these leftover areas have on load time, file size, etc.
At least he will never know how easy he is to defeat.
Matter Splatter is like Catherine the game. Just Mario’s version, climb to the top as the bottom disappears below you.
im bouta cry rn...
Question for swank how do you get the camera shots?
Well you see Matter only Splatters when there is not enough matter atoms to keep the from splattering on the fancy platter and it only matters when Matter Splatters flatters
Alternative mention to my upcoming smg mod:
The real boss of here is jeremy
YESS A NEW VIDEOOO
okay, ive caught myself watching and enjoying your videos, take a sub
good video but i was distracted by the pink progress bar
These videos are so interesting
this galaxy isn't technically 100% deleted, they did use it's concept in SMG2 but the level layout is different and it's only for 1 star.
It's just that star that was deleted or moved.
are you talking about flash black galaxy? i tall makes sense now
huh i just beat mario galaxy 1 on switch yesterday all 120 stars and i just went through matter splatter galaxy

And his purgatory continues...
When will you ever run out of mario galaxy mysteries ???
Maybe the secret 5th stage of the level is the Green Star stage in the Ghostly Galaxy.
Imagine being the one guy who disliked
would of been a pain with the spring mushroom
I’m a bit disappointed that the structure isn’t there
They probably cut it because they found it too long or else it was beta
There's an unused zone in Bowser's Galaxy Reactor (SMG1)...
such an epic game
Probably a testing zone
I wonder which Magikoopa is the REAL Kamek and also maybe the Galaxy looks forgotten
That deleted space was just matter that wasn’t splattered
That’s pretty neat
oh space magikoopa we hardly knew ye...
Is there any way to see the star bits in the distance during normal gameplay?
No, they are too far away from the main area and the game unloads them.
where is the ELH video you promised us during the Captain Toad video
Maybe they moved one.
Swanky boy, your videos are so short now, what’s occurring
I clicked the link mistaking the thumbnail for Toxic Tower from DKC2
Now could you try recreating it
so that spring section i think doesn't need the spring shroom. i tried for a long time with mario, on my search for the max stars no power ups run, and there was only 1 jump i barely couldn't do that maybe is possible with pixel perfect movement. never tried it with luigi but that should be easy.
Summoners war is great if you can stomach tons of rng
What are you thoughts on Remastered Zardy or even Papafear Gaming’s video of Boyfriend vs Zardy?
off subject, but if there's Ever a Zardy Plush....Somebody Tell Me.
I know this isn't exactly related to the video, but can someone tell me if this glitch is known about or documented?
I was playing the Mario 3d Allstars version of SMG, and I got all of the green stars in the game while I was out to casually 120 star the game, but when I did those starts on the Trial galaxies, the comets stopped appearing? Like, I had not gotten all of the stars from the comets yet and once I did the trial galaxies they stopped appearing. Is this a well known glitch, or am I just really unlucky?
you need to start playing through more galaxies then. i presume that the last comet you completed was dusty dune's speedy comet, but in order to get new comets you need to beat bowser's dark matter plant and continue progressing through the game. if you don't see comets over old galaxies, then talk to the big purple luma (not lubba), and feed him some star bits.
summoners war used to slap ngl
Does anything happen when you grab the question mark Coin?
2:51 so what are those blue things in the background?
Likely the blue springy things that aren't unloaded from the other area (4:35 probably one of these two spheres' areas),
and can thus be seen through the skybox since they're essentially 2d images, causing them to Z-fight with the skybox's texture.
The latter is probably more likely to be an emulation issue. Don't know if it can be seen on actual hardware.
@@FlowMH It can. I actually just noticed them a few days ago when playing Galaxy on the Switch, which is a recompiled port, and not being emulated
@@YermTerragon Interesting. Would be cool to see them up close!
