Neil Young - Philadelphia

  • This live cut was taken from Neil's Silver & Gold Live Video, released in 1999.
Neil Young: Silver & Gold is a live video by Neil Young performing solo on acoustic guitar and piano. All but the last song were performed at Austin, Texas' Bass Concert Hall during his 1999 solo acoustic tour. In my opinion this is the most beautiful rendition of the song....

Streets of Philadelphia is amazing, but when this song plays at the end of the movie you can't help but cry. Its about much more than AIDS. You think about family, friends, who's there for you when things aren't easy, about how no one wants to be alone...I could go on.

Just sayin', this is the one that should have won the Oscar. Less majestic than Springsteen's song, but much more intimate. And the lyric "I won't be ashamed of love" says it all; respect, empathy, and introspection from someone who is himself "straight." No disrespect to The Boss, because his song is amazing as well. Tough call, but this is the one that does it for me.

I thought it was built to spill when I first heard it in the movie....I don't mean to be rude but i'm not used to hearing such shockingly amazing music coming from long established acts. but that's fresh as a rose. if it was written yesterday it would be just as powerful and awesome.

The movie was a thing to behold. This song at the end is transcendent and redemptive. It makes the emotional payoff, when Beckett dies, a universally sad moment, yet one still filled with hope.
When at the end Beckett says to his love, "I'm ready to go.", it is a triumphant and beautiful moment. He has fought, and won, all of his battles with tremendous courage. And now that he has accomplished his last, and arguably his greatest act--because it will ultimately help many others to stand up and to fight for themselves and their loved ones--when he is too tired to go on, he can choose when to stop fighting, and so when to die, with the love of his life with him so that he may go in peace.
This song, positioned as it is at the end of both the movie and Beckett's life, is a magnificent coda that signifies the courage and grace that it takes to fight the good fight...even when one is faced with others who are filled with hate and bigotry toward your worthy cause. Neil Young did no less than to bring this song, and all that it signifies, into our hearts and minds, which is the best, most honest way to raise our consciousness about such an important, and worthy, subject. Tears flow freely because they are well deserved.
Bravo, Mr. Young. What a class act, as always. Young's music, and his inner beauty and generosity of spirit, transcends him. If he had accomplished this only, in his long and storied career, he would still have been remembered and celebrated for this masterpiece about, and for, the human condition. It truly is a marvel to behold.

I've got my friends in the world,/ I had my friends/ When we were boys and girls/ And the secrets came unfurled. -One of the deepest, saddest, most beautiful verses I've ever heard. Brings love back into the world.

I think the song that won should have been...BOTH of them! They complement each other, they are like a set. I can't help but think of the other when one is played. It makes sense, too, like the concept of brotherly love...sharing the award

I watched the Academy Awards that year so I could see Neil Young win an Oscar for this achingly beautiful song. I love the Boss but broke my heart to see Neil not get an Oscar for this timeless song. He was robbed. Better yet, both should have been awarded as a tie. All these years later and I'm still not over it.

This is the song from Philadelphia that truly did it for me. I have to disagree with the Academy's decision to give the Oscar for best song to Bruce Springsteen ---I think Neil should've won instead.

Oh my.. Immediately crying... I've been in love with The Streets of Philadelphia for 25 years... But hearing this, it all came back, I had indeed forgotten this movie is where this haunting gem came from.. Really, how could one pick one over the other for the Oscar.. Impossible choice. "Someone is talking to me.. I won't be ashamed of love.." How does he do it.. cut to the core so delicately, you hardly know it's happened until you're spent. Thank you Neil. Thank you

I am always so moved whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of the pain and heartache that I associate with the death of my brother from Aids in 1987 ... If I may borrow Neil's melodic and hauntingly emotional creation, I dedicate it to the memory of my brother for all of the feelings that swell up within me. Whenever I watch the last scenes in the movie, I cannot hold back my tears as director Johnathan Demme' brings those last painful but precious memories back to me.

    Lyrics:
Sometimes I think that I know
    What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right.
I've got my friends in the world,
    I had my friends
When we were boys and girls
    And the secrets came unfurled.
    City of brotherly love
    Place I call home
Don't turn your back on me
I don't want to be alone
    Love lasts forever.
    Someone is talking to me,
    Calling my name
Tell me I'm not to blame
I won't be ashamed of love.
    Philadelphia,
    City of brotherly love.
    Brotherly love.
Sometimes I think that I know
    What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right.
    Philadelphia
